2016 NHRA Indy Pro Mod Sunday Qualifying and Round One Results

COUGHLIN RACES TO FIRST ROUND VICTORY AS PRO MOD NO. 1 QUALIFIER AT CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE U.S. NATIONALS

BROWNSBURG, Ind. – Troy Coughlin raced to a first round victory Sunday as the No. 1 qualifier in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is presented by JEGS. This is the seventh of 10 Pro Mod events on the 2016 season.

Coughlin, the reigning and two-time world champion, used his 5.773-second pass at 254.76 mph from Friday night in his late model JEGS.com Chevy Corvette to earn the third No. 1 qualifier of his career and first of 2016.

Coughlin, who won the fourth event of the year at Englishtown, N.J., in June, went on to defeat Steven Whiteley in the first round. Coughlin sprinted to a 5.835 at 252.99 to better Whiteley’s 6.610 at 216.83 in his Y-Not Racing / J&A Service ’14 Cadillac CTS-V.

“It’s pretty exciting and I’m really fired up,” Coughlin said. “The entire JEGS.com team is fired up. This is Indy. Taking out a car and driver the caliber of Steven Whiteley in the first round is quite an accomplishment and it’s even sweeter that JEGS.com is presenting sponsor of the Pro Mod class at this race.”

Coughlin will race Bob Rahaim, who has two runner-up finishes this season, in Monday’s second round. Rahaim outlasted Eric Latino in the first round.

Von Smith qualified second with a 5.800 at 247.47 in his late model Al-Anabi Racing Chevy Corvette. He went on to defeat Danny Rowe, the Gainesville event runner-up, in the first round. Smith will meet 2011 Pro Mod champion Khalid alBalooshi in the second round.

Mike Bowman qualified third but was upset by Doug Winters in the first round. Winters will go up against two-time 2016 event winner Rickie Smith on Monday.

Eliminations for the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals will continue at 12:25 p.m. on Monday.
