LUCAS OIL WINNERS CROWNED; ADKINSON TAKES MOSER SHOOTOUT IN ROCKINGHAM
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Champions were recognized yesterday for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Southeast Division Race at Rockingham Dragway. Comp, Super Stock, Super Gas, Top Fuel Harley, the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout specialty event and the rest of the classes that encompass the nationwide series were all in action.
In a high stakes Comp Eliminator final round, Jenny Treadwell of Mount Plymouth, Fla., squared off against Art Hodges of Olin, N.C. Treadwell gained the advantage at the tree and grabbed the Comp Eliminator win. Treadwell made a winning pass of 8.251 seconds, 156.53 mph as Hodges clocked in at 7.274 seconds, 186.95 mph.
Fans were treated to the Moser Sportsman Shootout with Jeff Adkinson and Sherman Adcock taking the starting line for the final round. Adcock took off a tick too early and Adkinson received the Moser Shootout win, trophy and payout. Adkinson, Damascus, Ga., went 6.390, 101.19 for the win.
The Pro Fuel Harley finale came down to two North Carolina racers. Johnny Vickers, Millers Creek, N.C., 7.163, 172.92 defeated Janette Thornley, Statesville, N.C., who broke in the final. Thornley should have taken over the points lead with her runner up finish in Pro Fuel. In Top Fuel Harley, Tracy Kile, Ashoville, N.C., 6.886, 167.22 defeated. Kevin Boyer, Edmonton, Alb., 7.246, 177.42. Both championships will come down to the final event in Las Vegas this coming weekend.
In the Top Sportsman presented by Davis Golf Carts Paul Pittman ran an 0.016 package to take the Top Sportsman Wally trophy back to Bloomington, Minn. Ronald Proctor of Harpers Ferry, W.V., registered a runner-up pass of 6.788, 208.75. Top Dragster presented by Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales was in action as well as Wendell Bowie, Statesville, N.C., ran 7.151, 182.21 defeating Wayne Brooks, Monroe, Ga., 6.844, 197.51.
The other drivers visiting the Lucas Oil winner’s circle were Corey Taylor in Super Stock; Richard Preiser in Stock Eliminator; Jeremy Mason in Super Comp; Steven Furr in Super Gas; and Leland Poppell in Super Street.
Additional racers in the Harley-Davidson classes making it to the winner’s circle were Marc Ingwersen in Pro Gas Harley; Tim Grindle in Street Pro Harley; David Dennick in Draggin Bagger Harley; John Toth in Hot Street Harley; and William Rowe Jr. in Screamin’ Eagle Performance Harley.
Junior Dragsters were also in competition at Rockingham Dragway. In a battle for Southeast bragging rights, Autumn Greene, Bradenton, Fla., hit a winning pass of 7.902, 80.75 defeating Madison Wilson, Laurens, S.C., 7.922, 81.32 in the 13-17 year old category. In a 10-12 year old category standoff, Maximus Butcher, Doylestown, Ohio, 8.937, 73.77 defeated Vance Houston, Newland, N.C., foul.
