NOSTALGIA HISTORY MADE AT FIREBIRD RACEWAY

BOISE, Idaho – Jason Rupert, Brian Hyerstay, and Jacob Wood all took their pictures in the winner circle of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Northwest division NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor Championship presented by Peterson Chevrolet this past weekend at Firebird Raceway. Rupert took the win in Nostalgia Funny Car, Hyerstay won in Comp Eliminator and Wood won in Sportsman Motorcycle class.

The quickest Nostalgia Funny Care race in Firebird History took place in the final round. Rupert, out of Anaheim Hills, Calif., faced off with Dan Horan, Sylmar, Calif., in a ’69 Camaro battle. Horan made a strong pass down the lane but he was no match for Rupert. Rupert had the starting line advantage and saved his best pass for his last making it a decisive win in his favor with a winning lap of 5.602 seconds, 256.80 mph. Horan had a runner up pass of 5.765 seconds, 247.52 mph.

Eugene, Ore., racer Hyerstay, was the number one qualifier and took home the trophy in Comp Eliminator. Ryan Warter, Olalla, Wash., was slow off the light and could not run down Hyerstay in his ’09 dragster, who had a winning pass of 9.166 seconds, 139.78 mph. Hyerstay added to his collection of accomplishments in Comp Eliminator, making this win number nine.

The home state racer Jacob Wood, Eagle, Idaho, took home the win in the Sportsman Motorcycle class. This was a first-time final round appearance for both racers. Woods’ took home the victory in a double breakout over Dan Patridge, Kennewick, Wash.

Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash., ran closer to his dial in to capture the win over Alan Falcone, Olympia, Wash., in Super Stock. Lang tried for a double up win in Stock Eliminator but fell short to Scott Burton, Golden, Colo., who had a great 0.008 light and ran closer to his dial in to secure the win.

In one of the closest finals of the day, experienced Super Comp racers, Michael Dalrymple, Sunnyside, Wash., drove his ’09 Mullis to the win over Mike Shannon, Kelowna, B.C., in Super Comp. The racers left the line together with identical .019 reaction times but Dalrymple ran .001 to the index for a very close win. Dalrymple ran 9.151 sec. at 170.51 mph, and that was just enough to beat Shannons’ 9.185 sec. at 160.92 mph. and take the trophy back to Washington. Other racers taking trophies home to Washington include Chris Cannon from Bothell, who won in Super Gas; and Larry Miner of Sedro-Wolley, who won in Super Street.
