Notes: On April 18, Don was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car Combo race. He beat John Barnes in the first round, with a 7.62/187.88, but in the second round, he fouled against Walt Rhoades. OCIR held an eight-car Combo Eliminator race in July. Enriquez set a new track record 7.33 beating his own 7.34 record, and he tied his speed record with a 203.61 clocking while winning the race. The 7.33 qualified #1, and he ran times of 7.35/203.61 over Jimmy Ige and another 7.33/203.61 advanced into the final over a fouling Dave Russell. In the final he faced Ige again (who got back in on the "break rule"). Don's 7.34/202.70 was too much for Jimmy's 7.60/161. Don won his fourth Combo Eliminator title at Irwindale on September 13. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 7.40 in the sixteen-car field. The show was made up of eight A/FDs, five Top Gas Dragsters, and three fuel altereds. Enriquez ran a 7.423/188.28 in the first round, to advance when Mike Fuller shut down early. A 7.46/188.67 won in round two when John Barnes fouled against him and in round three he ran uncontested as Bob Downey shut off on the line. In the final he ran Walt Rhoades in the "Gas House Gang" car. Don was sharp on the tree and his 7.44/198.67 (Top Speed) took the victory over Walt's slightly quicker 7.43/193. Set NHRA record 7.33 198.00. |

Notes: Don was at Riverside in mid-March for the HRM Championships. The car was run in Super eliminator, and his 7.73 qualified #3 for the class. His 7.84/196.93 won in round one, but he fouled in the second round. He won over an eight-car field at Lions on April 26. There, his 7.68 qualified second behind Billy Tidwell's 7.66. In the first round, his 7.83/186.33 easily advanced. He picked up to 7.63/200.44 in the semifinal to drop Bob Downey's 7.69/188. He faced Jimmy Ige in the final, and Enriquez ran 7.58/198.67 for the victory over Ige's 7.62/186. On May 10, OCIR held an eight-car show. Don qualified #1 with a 7.67/176.47. He made runs of 7.57/196.50 and a track record 7.50 at 190.66 to beat Fred Kraemer and Ed Allen to advance into the final. A final round 7.57/194.80 beat Downey's 8.18/158 for the money. He won over another eight-car field at Lions on May 31. There he "only" qualified #3 with a 7.78. He had to out-drive Ted Thurber in the first round, as his 7.96/193.96 beat Ted's quicker 7.91/194. Gene Adams must have flipped the switch in the semifinals as Enriquez picked up to a 7.60 (Low ET) at 194.80 to drop Tidwell's 7.70/193. Another 7.60/194.80 in the final took out Downey at 7.79/181. He also won the PDA Championships held at OCIR on July 19. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 7.47 qualified #1. In round one, he beat Les Allen and set a track ET record with a 7.34/202.70. He then reset the track's mph record in the second round, where he ran 7.37/203.61 to defeat Larry Bright's 7.95/187. He ran another 7.34 in the semifinal to drop Bill Landon's 7.98. To make sure that he backed up his records, Enriquez went 7.34/203.61 in the final to beat Barry Kaplan's 7.68/191. Enriquez was back at OCIR early in August for an eight-car show. His 7.54 qualified #1, and the car just kept on running quicker in eliminations. An opening round 7.47/199.11 beat Roger Pellor's 8.18/183. Bob McFarland fouled against him in the semifinal, and Don still pushed the little DeSoto to 7.40/200.89 (Top Speed) to advance. In the final, he also set Low ET with his 7.38/199.11 getting the measure of Tidwell's 7.68/198. In September, Don ran 7.46 (National Record) at OCIR with a Chrysler motor. Notes: Although not named as such in any lettering on the cowl, this was effectively Swamp Rat I, the first of his numerous fuel dragsters. As Garlits told me in a 2022 telephone interview, "I went to the junkyard and got a set of '31 Chevy frame rails and built Swamp Rat 1." He built the dragster in his garage. He raced it at Prospect Field in Fort Lauderdale on Mar. 31, clocking 144 mph. On Apr. 7 at Kissimmee Airfield, he ran 10.87 at 137.405 mph. These early season runs were times of experimentation with different blends of nitro and alcohol. He was doing well locally but wanted to see how he would do against stronger competition, so in the latter part of August, he towed his dragster to Cordova, Illinois, for the ATAA World Series of Drag Racing. He was in awe of some of the racers he had read about, including Emery Cook, Setto Postoian, and Fisher & Greth. There, he got some important advice from Emery Cook on making his car go faster. Cook told him to use a heavy dose of nitro, not the 25 percent load that he had been using. He made some modifications in the carburetion to accept the heavier loads of nitro, and the results were more than he could have hoped for. He beat Cook & Bedwell in the third round of top fuel eliminations, clocking an impressive 9.02 at 150.21 mph. He lost to Serop Postoian in the top fuel eliminator finals. His best speed clocking of the meet was 154 mph. He returned to Florida full of confidence. On Sep. 2 at Buckingham Field in Fort Myers, he was runner-up in top eliminator to Dennis Hess at the Southwest Florida Championships. At Kissimmee Airfield on Nov. 3, he set a new track record with 9.95 at 156.52 mph. The following week, on Nov. 10 at Brooksville Airport, he put his name in the record books with a world record of 8.79 at 176.40 mph. With that run, endorsements, sponsorships, and manufacturers' equipment began to flow his way. It was a heady time for him. He towed his dragster to Chester Airport in South Carolina for a 2-day ITA race. On the first day, Nov. 28, on a wet track, he made a time trial run, clocking 155.40 mph. The next day, he set a new track record with 160.71 mph. He won top eliminator with a best run of 8.95 at 170.71 mph. He finished the year at Kissimmee Airfield on Dec. 15, setting a new track record with a run of 167.405 mph in 9.42 seconds. He took runner-up to Floyd Allbritton when his axle broke.
