Notes: In the latter half of 1958, Bill switched bodies from a '34 Ford coupe to the '48 Fiat Topolino body. Films taken by Jnaki show him running the Fiat body at Lions and Riverside in January 1959. At the Jan. 25 race at Pomona, he mounted a new Chassis Research coupe chassis in the car. At that stage, the top of the Fiat had also not been chopped but was chopped later. He was running the torque converter with the same blown engine setup he had in 1958. The car was not too quick with a torque converter off the line, but it made tremendous pull at the top end. Everyone who heard the car stated how loud it was, too. At the Jan. 25 race at Pomona, Coburn obliterated the old strip A/CC record with a clocking of 9.60 at 150.00 mph. After winning his class, Coburn turned over the driving duties to Frank Cannon for the eliminations. Cannon lost to Gary Cagle in the top fuel eliminator finals. At Riverside on Aug. 9, the Coburn Glaze coupe took top eliminator and set a new top time of 157.95 mph in 9.50 seconds on straight alcohol. They ran over 150 mph all day long. At Riverside on Sep. 7, the newly painted A/CC won its class with a low ET of 9.31 and a top speed of 166.35 mph. The times were good for a new national Drag News 1320 record. On Oct. 3 at Colton, the coupe ran 141.50 mph for a 3/16th-mile race. However, they blew a head gasket and couldn't compete against the Leffler-Loukas coupe from Ohio. On Dec. 6 at Pomona, Glenn Coburn did the driving for his father. They ran in A/FD instead of A/CC, winning top fuel eliminator with an ET of 9.28 and 158 mph. Notes: Coburn started the year with the same motor setup that he ended the '57 season with--an unblown 405-inch '51 Chrysler heads and block with a '57 300-C Chrysler crank, giving him a four-by-four engine. Lions Drag Strip was where he started racing in '57, and that's where he primarily raced in 1958. At Lions on Jan. 5, he was beaten by Joe Koenig in the Reath-Pick-Koenig blown DeSoto A/CC. A week later, he dropped his transmission on the starting line in the first round of eliminations against Willie Borsch's roadster. The following week, on Jan. 19, it was deja vu, losing to Joe Koenig in A/CC. On Feb. 2, he towed the coupe to Santa Ana and took a Modified class win with 119.04 mph. But Coburn saw that the more successful cars had begun using blowers to get more power. He was always trying to improve, so he installed a McCulloch blower on his big Chrysler motor to go with his somewhat unique torque converter tranny setup. The coupe was not impressive off the line, but its top end charge was impressive. All who heard it commented on how loud it was, too. With the new blower at Lions on Feb. 22, he took A/CC with 11.56 at 126.75 mph. The next day at Lions, he got a class win with 11.67 at 127.47 mph. The new blower made him competitive. On Mar. 2, he took a class victory at Lions with 11.68 at 128.38 mph. At San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on May 11, he took a class win on gas in A/CC with 11.73 at 123.74 mph, a new strip record. On May 18 at Lions, he took the A/CC class with 11.43 at 129.12 mph. During eliminations, he beat Art Chrisman's Sidewinder and Don's Trim Shop's Olds B/D en route to winning top eliminator. His best times were 11.43 and 129.12 mph. On June 14 at Lions, he took an A/CC win with 11.99 at 125.17 mph. But Bill Coburn wanted to try out his coupe on fuel, but he couldn't do that at the All-Gas Lions strip. On June 29, he went to Pomona and ran in the A/CC class on alcohol. He took a class win with 11.46 and a top speed of the meet at 126.74 mph. He got the taste for running fuel, and on July 4 at Pomona, he won A/CC with 11.45 at 130.87 mph. But he hadn't totally given up on running gas, so on July 20, he towed to Santa Ana, an all-gas strip, where he took A/CC with 11.64 at 125.80 mph. On Aug. 16, on gas back at Lions, he won A/CC with 11.46 at 129.87 mph. At the big 3-day Labor Day meet at Colton, he set a strip record running on alcohol in A/CC with 136.36 mph in 11.48 seconds. Running gas at Santa Ana on Sep. 21, he took a class win with 11.31 at 128.57 mph. At the Drag Racers, Inc. world championships at Riverside on Sep. 27/28, he won the A/CC class on fuel with 11.32 at 133.33 mph. On Nov. 13, Lions ran a 3/16th-mile race. Notes: In 1960, Coburn's eyes and focus were really on a totally radical dragster called "Iron Mistress." But he towed the old '48 Fiat coupe to a few races. He was still a draw for race promoters who advertised his appearance in the fuel modified coupe. On Jan. 24, he raced it at Pomona and took a class win in the competition coupe on fuel with 9.43 at 164.53 mph. At Riverside on May 15, in A/CC on fuel, he took a class win with 8.97 at 159.95 mph. At Fontana on Nov. 20, he was booked in for a match race with Langford-Brown-Koulan's blown 420ci Olds fuel dragster. On a warm-up run early in the morning, he broke the axle but welded it in time for the racing. Neil Leffler drove the Coburn Glaze coupe and beat the L-B-K dragster convincingly. Notes: This car was the record holder for AA/A performance at 6.82/202.54 at US 131, Martin, Michigan, 6/77. Where did it run 202.80? The top of the body was "not" fiberglass. It was tin work, done by Ron Boggs, five color painted & acid dipped. | Ron Boggs owned the 23T, and John Carter owned the 417 Donovan engine. When Poison was on the side of this car, it was Boggs and Carter.
