Notes: Possibly the baddest BB/FC in history. Armstrong became the first to break the 6.7, 6.6, and 6.5-second barriers in 1975. Set Low ET of 6.56 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship in November 1975. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. After this run, the BB/FC records were retired in March 1976. The 6.50s were not seen again until 1979. - TN | Set National Record 6.72 in Sacramento. Won the NHRA World Finals over Ken Veney, who redlighted in the final. |

Notes: Armstrong's new Satellite appeared without paint at the IHRA World Nationals in the first week of May. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.92/205.82 beat Ed Renck's 7.30/157. Another 6.92/205.82 in the semifinal advanced when Wilfred Boutilier broke. He faced Dave Settles in the final, and Dale ran his third 6.92 (at 202.19) to win over Settles' 7.01. The following week, he took it to Sacramento, where he beat Lou Gasparelli in the final and set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.57/213. Dale qualified #1 at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals with a 6.77 (Low ET). He then ran 6.83/204.54 to beat Jeg Coughlin's 7.03/196 in the first round, followed by a 6.81 over Settles, who lost an engine in round two. A strong 6.79/205.47 beat Ken Veney's 6.99/203 in the semifinals. This moved him into the final against Boutilier. The two had a close race, but Armstrong's 6.83/204.08 got the victory over Boutilier's 6.86/203. Dale also ran 6.57 at 213 and a confirmed 212 in November 1976, along with the 6.47. | A '76 PHR Yearbook showed Armstrong at Beech Bend experimenting with a polished, box-type Crower. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Austin set several records in 1993. He ran the quickest and fastest pass in history at Gators at 5.795/245.49, but he did not back it up. Records were reset after the Gators due to a rule change and thus were slower than previous records. Here are Pat's other 1993 records: 5.825/241.28 at Arizona 2/93, 5.820 at NHRA Baytown TX 3/07/93, 235.91 at Rockingham 4/93, 5.876/241.02 at Englishtown 5/93, 6.04/234.74 at Columbus 6/93, and 5.836/242.19 at Topeka Heartland Nats 10/93. Notes: Brad was well overdue for an NHRA national event victory when he pulled into Pomona for the Winternationals in February. He qualified #2 with a 6.64/211.76, then ran 6.67/207.85 and 6.71/209.30 in beating Tom Lemon and Don Holm in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 6.75/212.26 to beat Jack Holsey's 6.85/206. He faced Chuck Beal in the final, and both had trouble getting traction, but Brad's 7.20/207.85 scored him his first NHRA title over Chuck's 7.39/203. It was the first of many. He was at Fremont in April for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.61/213.27 (Top Speed) qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he got derailed in the first round, where his 6.85/209.30 lost to Jimmy Scott's 6.75/208. Set both ends of the world record at the Golden Gate Nationals. Amazing speed display made Brad a participant in the FOUR fastest side by side TAFC passes in history at the World Finals (213.77 against Jon Barrett's 206.42/213.77 against Steve Chrisman's 207.37/213.27 against Chuck Beal's 208.33, and 213.77 against Gary Southern's 209.79). Notes: Brad started the season with a win at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway on January 27. He qualified #1 with a 6.60/214.79, well ahead of Chris Christensen, who was second at 6.99. In the first round, Anderson improved to 6.58/218.97 over Mike Grieco, who also improved from his qualifying 7.84 to a 6.73/213. He soloed with a 6.67/217.39 in the semifinals when Mike Haddox failed to show. This set up a final-round match with Christensen. Brad set Low ET and Top Speed while grabbing the victory with a 6.41/223.88 over Chris' 7.35/199. A week later (February 3), he held the trophy at Pomona, winning the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.32/225.11. Christensen fouled against him in the first round, and Brad advanced with a 6.36/219.40. He had a close race with Mike Andreotti in round two, but his 6.48/219.51 prevailed over Mike's 6.51/212. A 6.34/221.56 beat Grieco in the semifinals and put Brad into the final against Steve McGee. Steve had problems in the final and shut off while Brad ran 6.55/219.19 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Brad set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.25/222.88. Unfortunately, he had trouble in the first round, and his tire shaking 6.88/215.62 lost to Bogie Kell's 6.74/206. His next stop was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. Anderson's 6.51 got the pole in qualifying, and another 6.51 at 214.79 beat Grieco's 6.67/219 in the first round. In the semifinals, he set a new track record 6.36 at 220.04 (Top Speed) over John Weaver's 6.67/209. A final round 6.66/215.31 gave him another victory over Christensen's 6.81/206 runner-up effort. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Anderson won the Cajun Nationals with a 6.38/222.44 best. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. ET was low qualifier at inaugural Ennis All Stars race. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. | Vern was at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.81/190.67. He picked up to 6.51/218.97 (Top Speed) in a first-round win over John Weaver's quicker 6.45/217. In the semifinals he had problems and shut off to 8.56/101.69 while losing to eventual winner Pat Austin's 6.44/216. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he ran 6.31/222.33 to qualify #2 and a first-round 6.35/222.55 (Top Speed) beat Brad Anderson's 6.46/213. Another strong run of 6.40/221.67 downed Mark Woznichak's 6.52/218. This set up a semifinal race with Chuck Phelps and the "Bad Moon Rising" Firebird. Moats ran his slowest time of the day, a 6.45/220.69 while Chuck took the win with a 6.39/220. 6.334 225.66 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/87. |

Notes: Rookie season. Won US Nationals. | Randy made his debut driving for his dad, Brad at the NHRA Winternationals. He failed to qualify, but he did run 6.22/223.71 (fourth alternate). He then went to Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals where his 6.13/227.73 qualified #6. Randy was late in the first round, and his 6.12/227.84 lost to John Weaver's 6.18/226. He continued to improve at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. There he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.96/235.41. He got his first NHRA round win with a 6.12/231.89 over Jim Nix's 6.21/212, but in round two he was surprised by Jackie Stidham's strong 5.97/235 that put his 6.07/228.60 out of the show. Anderson reached his first final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.04/232.55. In the opening round an off-pace 6.39/222.00 beat Al DaPozzo's 6.56/228. In round two, a quick-leaving 6.26/227.15 beat Todd Paton's quicker 6.17/228. He got another holeshot win in the semifinals where his 6.03/232.85 beat a 6.01/233 by Bucky Austin. This put him into the final against Pat Austin. The advantage was definitely with Austin as he had been running 5's all day. Sure enough, a final 6.00/233 was enough to beat Randy's 6.28/215.05. |
