Notes: This was the first AA/FA with 120" wheelbase and an offset rear-end housing allowing the driver to set lower in car. Per Claude, the car ran 7.12 at 206 with a blown big block on gasoline, which was quicker than the nitro powered fuel altereds of the day. We need to confirm if that was 1968 or 1969. |

Notes: When Leland Kolb entered the Modified Roadster ranks, he simply took the A/MR class over. He was unbeatable when he could keep his engine in one piece (he lost out at the '58 Nats with a blown piston). He started working out the new-car bugs at Lions on Sep. 6 (11.56 at 140.62 mph), Sep. 20 (12.07 at 132.15 mph), and Oct. 4 (10.59 at 142.40 mph). On Nov. 1 at Lions, he started a streak of top eliminator wins with 10.28 at 143.54 mph. The next day, he took a top eliminator win at Santa Ana with 10.41 at 142.00 mph. He took a class win at the D.R.I. meet at Riverside on Nov. 9 with 10.46 at 141.28 mph. He really turned some heads when he took a top eliminator win at Santa Ana with a blistering 9.07 at 151.27 mph on Nov. 23. At Chandler Associated Drag Strip in Arizona on Nov. 30. He set a national record with 9.98 and a fast 142.11 mph. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 49, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: On July 11, 1961, they set the Drag News Magazine 1320 National Record at Onondaga Dragway, 8.57 seconds at 183.67 mph. They backed those numbers up in that same year at the then, brand-new Martin, MI Dragway. This was on gasoline, and the record stood for over a year. Also 1961, they ventured to Cordova, Ill., winning the World Series of Drag Racing, and to Smithfield, TEx., where they were Top Eliminator runner-up to Don "Big Daddy" Garlits. |

Notes: He managed the Chandler Associated Drag Strip in 1958, but was only an adviser in 1959. He went to the first U.S. Fuel and Gas Championships at Bakersfield, but suffered engine problems. On Mar. 21 at Chandler he set a new track record for A/R with 133.92 mph. He towed his roadster to Santa Ana for the Gold Cup races on Apr. 19. He set a new track record for A/R with 11.00 at 138.46 mph. He became the first racer to top 140 mph in the A/R class at Las Vegas. At Chandler on May 24, he took an A/R class win with 10.94 at 134.32 mph. On Oct. 3 at the Phoenix Drag Strip, he turned 136.98 in the A/Altered Roadster class, a new strip record. Newspapers reported he held the world's record in that class of 145 mph. On Nov. 15 at Davis-Monthan airfield, he set a new strip record with 9.37 at 135.90 mph. Notes: Holik was a member of the coupe's team when it raced and took Top Eliminator at Salt Lake Raceway on July 30, but then dropped out of the picture, and after that, it was just Hampton-Dye. It spent most of the season at the No. 10 spot on the Drag News 1320 List until Nov. 4 at Lions when Hampton lost to Tommy Ivo driving Ernie's Camera. At Lions, on Aug. 5, he set both ends of the Drag News national record. On Sep. 2 at Fontana, he was runner-up in Top Eliminator with a 173.07 mph pass to Glen Stokey. He consistently ran over 170 mph in races at Fontana, Lions, and San Gabriel. At his last race of the season at San Gabe, he ran 171.10 but lost his rear end. Notes: This is the fourth car the Burkholder Bros. built. It was originally run in the AA/A class on Gas. Then we changed to Fuel during the AA/FA match race days. 15% nitro was all we could pass through the gas injector system, but still eventually ran 200 MPH. Car was based on owner Harry Burkholder built chassis with the Old's engine from their previous AA/A. The body by brother Pete was a one-off 23 T touring. Was ranked as the world's fastest Olds powered car. |

Notes: Austin spent much of the earlier part of the '60 season building a new 444 ci Chrysler motor and tweaking his Fiat altered. By November, he was ready to see what it could do on the race track. On Nov. 6 at Caddo Mills, he set both ends of the track record with 9.58 at 150.50 mph. On Nov. 27 at Green Valley, he set a national record in A/A with 9.81 at 147.52 mph. Notes: The car had a four-speed manual trans. He didn't use first gear, except in the class final at the US National against Bill Kydd's 482 wedge car. Believe the year was 1966. Charlie ran a strong 8.68 to win. Brother Frank was very competitive, too. Confirmed 8.62 national record in Oklahoma. |

Notes: Carl Heichel ran his Logghe Chassis 23-T AA/A in Super Eliminator in Division 3 from 68/70. The car was powered by a 472 Hemi on gasoline, using a rare Hilborn bug-catcher injector. He held the NHRA class record speed & ET five different times and set records at every track he ran. Carl retired the car in 1970 to race a 69 Mustang Fuel Funny Car. Also ran 8.20/171.45 Tri-City Dragway (National Record) 8/70. |

Notes: "Vita C" was hand built on a homemade jig in Waite's garage. Woody Gilmore assisted with the design. The chassis was stress relieved, after fabrication. Rear end was a Ford narrowed unit. Gear sets were 4.11, 4.33, or 4.44. Trans was a three speed Lenco. Carbs were 1150 CFM Holleys. Waite's engine actually out-torqued Dyno Don's 702 HP, Cleveland Motor, during same day dyno testing. A solid, fast race car! |
