On 2-05-1960, Tommy became the first 8-second run (8.95) on gas. Set new world speed record at 170.45 at Lions on March 13, 1960, then reset it at Lions on 4-23-60 at 172.74, and then reset it at 173.07 at Lions on 5-14-60. Did Tom really go 193.54 in 1960? |

Notes: Car debuted on 5/23/55 after two years of construction. Sported two engines: an Olds mounted in front and a Cadillac located behind the rear axle. Set speed records in 1955 as follows: 151.07 on 8/20/55 at Lawrenceville, Ill. (first dragster over 150), 10.48-151.00 on 10/1/55 at Great Bend, Kansas (first NHRA Nationals), and 152.02 on 10/9/55 at San Fernando. I took this photo at the "World Series of Drag Racing" at a WWII airport in Lawrenceville, Ill. in 1955. -- WA and TH | 1,800-lb. tube-frame car had swing axles and four-wheel disc brakes. Both engines were carbureted gas-burners. Front-mounted 348" Olds turned 2nd and 3rd gears through a Ford trans; the behind-the-axle 391" Cadillac was direct drive. Both drove a common rear end comprised of two spliced-together front halves of a Model A diff, now facing in opposite directions. The unique driving method: Scott would rev the Olds and leave the line in 2nd gear with the Cad out back engaged via the in-out but off and not running. The Cad would fire in the first few feet off the line and two seconds later a timed hydraulic cylinder opened the throttles wide. Results attest the odd couple Olds/Cad complemented each other well, unlike many early two-engine experiments. The uniquely engineered combination made the Bustle Bomb one of the first dragsters that could run the big top-end numbers and ET too. Notes: The very first Green Monster built by the Arfons brothers was a three-wheeler slathered in John Deere green tractor paint. "Go" was provided by a 95-horse Olds flathead six that fed power to a Packard rear end. In a 1990 interview Art Arfons said the ungainly machine would do 86 in the quarter before the valves floated. Showing an impressive growth curve, their second Greem Monster had twice as many wheels and 15 times the horsepower. -- RT |

Notes: This iteration of the Green Monster was built to showcase a WWII-era Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12, which appears quite similar in pictures to their typical go-to mill, the 1710-cube Allison. The factory-rated 1,300-hp Merlin engine (1,700 claimed in race trim) is widely considered to be the factor that cemented the P-51 Mustang's reputation as the best all-around fighter of WWII. Also used in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito and numerous other warplanes. The Arfons' most successful piston-engined car, Green Monster #11 was raced frequently from 1957-59. The Merlin-powered "Monster" twice set the mph record at Union Grove on July 6, 1958 with speeds of 146.58 and 150.00 flat. -- RT |

Notes: "Jet Car" Bob Smith was severely burned in a gas dragster crash at Green Valley Raceway (Fort Worth, Tex.) in late August, as reported in the 8-27-68 Milwaukee Journal. Smith was a familiar name to Wisconsin drag racing fans, having crashed three times in the Milwaukee area, destroying two jet dragsters, in the five years prior to his Texas accident. The resilient Smith was back in the driver seat for the '68 season. -- RT |
