Notes: Paul Nicolini and Harry Duncan sold their temperamental Sidewinder in 1958 to Chuck Jones from Orange, and Joe Mailliard, from Long Beach. They divided the labor, Jones handling the chassis, and Mailliard was the tuner. They got Jack Chrisman to be the driver. One of the first outings was at Santa Ana on Aug 17, where Chrisman turned 9.89 at 147.55 mph. On Sep 20 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with 9.96 at 149.25 mph. The next day at Santa Ana, he took Top Eliminator with 10.11 at 151,57 mph. On Oct 11 at Lions, he won Top Eliminator with best times of 9.67 at 152.02 mph. A week later, at Lions, he ran 9.59 at 154.37 mph. They were periodically plagued with flinging chains, a common occurrence with sidewinder dragsters. On Nov 1 at Lions, they broke in a new engine, clocking 9.96 and 155.44 mph before the end of the meet. On Nov 23 at Lions, they closed out the year with 9.86 at 151.00 mph. Notes: According to MotorTrend writer Rob Kinnan, the renowned twin-engine dragster that obliterated the AA/GD records in 1960 had its debut in 1958. Kinnan wrote, "Cam, crankshaft, and cylinder head manufacturer Howard Johansen's twin-engine rail ran a pair of poked and stroked 283 Chevys and sat in a rigid, homebuilt, 100-inch-wheelbase chassis. The car was built in 1958, originally with three two-barrels on each engine and weighing 1,350 pounds. After a few outings in that configuration, they stuck on two 4/71 blowers (each with four Stromberg 97 carbs), then put single AFBs on the blowers and finally two-hole Hilborn injectors by 1960." That is mostly correct. The right engine was 283 cubic inches, but the left engine was 330 inches or a total of 613 cubic inches. The dragster was owned, tuned, and built by Howard Johansen. By the end of December 1958, Phil Johnson owned the dragster, Johansen did the tuning, and Glen Ward was the driver. Ward wasn't the first driver, though. At its first outing at Long Beach, Lonnie Butts was driving. On its first pass, the dragster did a giant wheelstand. Butts didn't want any part of that, so they put the dragster on the trailer and looked for another driver. Glen Ward, a barber, had been driving a gas Oldsmobile dragster, and he jumped at their offer to have him drive the dual-engine dragster. They put him behind the wheel at a race at Lions on Nov. 16. They also put two 4/71 GMC superchargers on the engines for the first time, with good effect. Ward got top eliminator with 9.85 at 155.44 mph. The following week at Lions, he didn't get top eliminator because a rod got shoved through the pan on the right side engine. He did get the top time/speed of the meet with 9.84 at 155.70 mph. After repairing the engine, they towed the car to Bakersfield, and that's where the car showed its potential. Running with leveled carbs atop the blowers, he set a new world ET record of 9.10 and a track record of 166.05 mph. They would replace the carb set-up at the beginning of 1959 with Hilborn injectors. Ward would be the car's driver for the next year and a half before Jack Chrisman took the reins. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 52, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB

Notes: The car debuted on 5/23/55 after two years of construction. Sported two engines: an Olds mounted in front and a Cadillac behind the rear axle. Set speed records in 1955 as follows: 151.07 on 8/20/55 at Lawrenceville, Ill. (first dragster over 150), 10.48/151.00 on 10/01/55 at Great Bend, Kansas (first NHRA Nationals), and 152.02 on 10/09/55 at San Fernando. I took this photo at the "World Series of Drag Racing" at a WWII airport in Lawrenceville, Ill., in 1955. - WA and TH | 1,800-lb. The tube-frame car had swing axles and four-wheel disc brakes. Both engines were carbureted gas burners. Front-mounted 348" Olds turned second and 3rd gears through a Ford trans; the behind-the-axle 391" Cadillac was direct drive. Both drove a standard rear end comprised of two spliced-together front halves of a Model A diff, now facing in opposite directions. The unique driving method: Scott would rev the Olds and leave the line in second gear with the Cad out back engaged via the in-out, but off and not running. The Cad would fire in the first few feet off the line, and two seconds later, a timed hydraulic cylinder opened the throttles wide. Results attest the odd couple Olds/Cad complemented one another well, unlike many early two-engine experiments. The uniquely engineered combination made the Bustle Bomb one of the first dragsters that could run the big top-end numbers and ET too. The subject of a multi-page feature in the 10/55 issue of Hot Rod. - RT | The first official car over 150, Lloyd Scott 8/20/55 - 151.00, then 152.02 - fastest speed of all time. After Losinski went 151.26 (not 151.07 for Scott); carbs on gas. - Bret Kepner/Bill discussion on the first cars over 150, 7/23

On Feb. 16 at Kingdon, he ran 145.17 mph. On Apr. 27 at Half Moon Bay, he took TE with 136.36 mph. He set a track record in B Open Gas at Little Bonneville in San Jose of 137 mph on May 4. He turned 134 mph at Half Moon Bay on May 11. On June 1 at Kingdon, he ran 136.88 mph. He took TE at Little Bonneville on June 15 with 135.35 mph. He took another TE victory at Half Moon Bay on July 13 with 141.95 mph. He set another strip record at Little Bonneville and won TE honors with 141.5 mph. On Aug. 10 at Half Moon Bay, he set a world record with 9.56 at 143.31 mph. A week later, at Little Bonneville, he upped the track record to 142.85 mph. On Aug. 24, he set an impressive new world record of 9.48 at a mind-blowing 150.50 mph. Those marks and wins set the stage for a very successful showing at the national championships at Oklahoma City, where he was runner-up in the dragster eliminations to winner Ted Cyr. En route to his second-place finish, he beat Art Arfons' Green Monster, Ralph Gonzalez, and Jack Moss. He registered the second fastest time ever on gas with a 9.3 run. Returning from Oklahoma, he entered a 2-day race on Sep. 6/7 at Camp White in Oregon, clocking 9.97 at 144.46 mph. At Half Moon Bay on Sep. 28, he ran 147.29 mph. On Oct. 12 at Half Moon Bay, he registered another good showing with 9.40. He finished the season with wins at Kingdon in B Open Gas on Nov. 2 with 143.31 mph and Dec. 7 with 9.8 at 145.89 mph. Notes: The 1958 season saw the evolution of the iconic Hustler dragster of Chrisman & Cannon from an injected B/GD to a full-bodied A/FD, one of the most famous cars in drag race history. It ran on gas up through when it won the best-engineered car award at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in late August. They had the fully-enclosed aluminum body with the bullet-shaped front made in time for the March Meet at Bakersfield. It ran in the B/D class without a supercharger or front cowling when it won Top Eliminator at the Santa Ana Gold Cup race on Apr. 20, where it turned 10.76 at 140.97 mph. They had the new front-mounted supercharger on the car when it raced at Lions on June 7, improving their time to 10.28 at 147.29 mph. On June 14 at Lions, Cannon may have collected on his wager with Mickey Thompson as Art ran 152.80 mph in the course of winning Top Eliminator. They had trouble keeping the motor in one piece for several weeks, with a string of blown engines plaguing them in June and into July. But once they got those problems sorted out, they returned to their winning ways and good times (in more ways than one). They went through three rounds at the Nationals at Oklahoma City before getting beaten by Ted Cyr. At the Drag Racers, Inc. world championships at Riverside on Sep. 27, they ran the engine on fuel for the first time. They turned 9.61 at 157.72 mph on their first run on alcohol. In the first round of eliminations, Art beat Pete Ogden, who was driving Romeo Palamides' dragster with a 9.50 at 163.33 mph clocking. In round 2, he beat Hank Vincent's Top Banana with a 9.60 run. The 3rd round was his undoing when he added 20% nitro to the alcohol mix and blew the blower. A blown blower was their undoing at the race at Gardner Field in Taft in Central California, but not before setting a strip record on both ends with 9.39 at 163.33 mph. The year concluded with other uneventful outings, but there was the promise of more good things to come in 1959, including the appearance of a new car-Hustler II. That would turn this car into the fabled Hustler I. Photo: Hot Rod, Jan. 1959 - MB

They did that at Bakersfield on Jan. 4, with Ward turning 8.92 at 171.42 mph. The following week, they returned to gas, running at two different tracks on the same day on Jan. 11. In the morning at Lions, Ward set a new track speed record with 162.16 mph at 9.48 seconds. They put the dragster on the trailer and towed to Santa Ana, where Ward promptly took top eliminator with 9.26 at 167.73 mph, both new track records. At Riverside the following week, on Jan. 18, Ward took gas top eliminator with 9.29 at 162.15 mph. They returned to Bakersfield two weeks later to run on straight alcohol again. Ward turned 9.29 at 169.17 mph. Two weeks later, they ran on alcohol again at Riverside, turning 8.94 at 170.45 mph. Then, two weeks later, they returned to Bakersfield and ran 8.93 at 174.08 mph before punching a rod through one of the motors on Mar. 1. This ended their experimenting with alcohol, and for the rest of the year, they only ran on gas. They were making a name in the drag racing world and were paid to come to Chandler Drag Strip in Arizona. Ward took top gas eliminator with a new track record time of 9.12 at 161 mph. Don Garlits beat them for top eliminator, but just by one car length. On Apr. 12 at Lions, they took a class win with 9.36 at 166.35 mph. A week later, at Santa Ana, they ran 9.19 at 157.87 mph on just one motor but blew a rod in the process. They repaired the engines and returned to Santa Ana a month later, getting top eliminator on May 24 with 9.71 at 152.54 mph. Then, they took several months off to prepare for the NHRA Nationals. They went to San Fernando on Aug. 11 for a shakedown run but turned just 9.27 at a slowing 153.58 mph. On about Aug. 20, they left California to go to the Nationals. They towed day and night for two days and got to Oklahoma City, where they entered the Mar-Car Invitational 1,000-foot drag races at the Fairgrounds. During eliminations, he beat the Green Monster with a run of 8.11 at 149.50 mph for the 1,000-foot distance. On the next run, the brakes failed, and Ward tried to broadslide the car, but it ran off the strip, turned over, and was destroyed. Ward was transported to the hospital in serious condition. He recovered, but they had to spend months building another dragster. It wouldn't be ready for Ward to drive until March 1960. Notes: Right out of the gate, this dragster looked to be something special. It made a good showing at the U.S. Nationals in 1958 at Oklahoma City. In its first outing in '59 at Santa Ana, it clocked 163.63 mph in 9.61, its fastest run of the season. On Feb. 15 at Santa Ana, Nelson took Top Eliminator. On Mar. 8 at San Gabriel, Nelson took Top Eliminator and set track records with 9.70 and 149.25 mph. On Apr. 5 at San Gabriel, it set a strip speed record with 155.97 mph. In early July at Santa Ana, Nelson was seriously injured when he crashed. While he recovered, Dode Martin took over driving duties. He had driven a time or two before, but Nelson had been the primary driver before the crash. At Oklahoma City in August, Martin won top gas eliminator at the Mar-Car 1,000-Foot Invitational, winning a $500 savings bond. Dode drove at the Detroit National Championships, setting a national time mark at 9.03. The success of this original Dragmaster dragster brought success to Martin and Nelson as other racers wanted these well-built chassis. They began building them for the growing drag racing community. Notes: Mickey Brown, only 21 years old at the start of the season, was a drag racer on the rise. In '58, he became the first man to go over 150 MPH in a gas dragster. In 1959 he wracked up class wins, TE victories, and set strip and national records racing at tracks in Southern California. May was an especially fruitful month. On May 3 at Santa Maria, he set a strip Top Speed record of 163.63 mph. On May 9 at Lions, he set a strip and national Drag News 1320 speed record of 161.29 mph. Three weeks later, at Lions on May 30, he improved that national record mark with a 161.87 mph clocking. It was evident that young Mickey was an ascending star in the gas dragster ranks. But that came to an abrupt end for the young man on Sep. 12. On that fateful day, Ronnie Scrima and Mort Smith were testing a new short wheelbase (93") dragster at Lions. They had dropped Gene Adams's Oldsmobile engine in the car but were having a hard time getting it down the track. Mickey Brown had left his own Olds-powered dragster at home, and he offered to see if he could drive the car. About 100 feet from the starting line, he lost control and flipped upside down, suffering fatal injuries because his head got outside the confines of the roll bar. Racers remembered him as a kind of wild but fun-loving kid. Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB

Notes: Chrisman was at Lions on Jun 20 when he made a pretty amazing run. As he was nearing the lights, the pressure plate blew, which threw off both chains. The car still ran 9.04/154.63.; At the start of the year, Wayne Reed, from Long Beach, joined the others, bringing with him a new motor. On Jan 18 at Lions, they were breaking Reed's new engine, only recording best times of 10.27 and 148.27 mph, but still managed to win Top Eliminator. On Jan 25 at Lions, the engine was doing better, and they clocked 9.63. Photo: George Klass Collection - MB

Notes: First gas dragster in the seven second zone. Quickest at the time, but national records were not set at that meet.

Notes: In 1957, Frank Cannon had a '55 T-Bird that he had been racing (and winning with) at Santa Ana, using a 312ci supercharged Ford engine. But in a quest to go quicker, he built a 454ci Hilborn-injected Chrysler Hemi. He got the help of the Chrisman brothers to hop it up and squeeze it into his T-Bird. It was really flying with the new engine. There are differing accounts of how Cannon teamed up with Chrisman in their joint dragster venture. Both stories involve a wager that Mickey Thompson purportedly made with Cannon (either for $100 or $300) about the feasibility of his engine being able to power a gas dragster over 150 mph. One story was that Cannon had a conversation with Mickey before going to the Chrismans to propose putting his engine into a dragster they were building. The other story had it that the wager was made after the Chrismans and Cannon had already established their joint venture and were already in the process of putting Cannon's Chrysler into their new dragster chassis. Whichever account is accurate (if at all), the dragster, which would evolve into the fabled Hustler, entered Lions' 2nd anniversary meet on Nov. 10. At this time, it lacked the front bullet-shaped aluminum body that it would acquire in 1958. Fifteen fast gas dragsters entered the big Lions meet, including Lefty Mudersbach, Jack Chrisman (driving Wayne Reed's roadster), Bob Tapia, Del Thorkelson, and even Frank Cannon (driving his own blown Ford Santa Fe Service A/D). It took thirteen separate rounds of run-offs to determine a winner. That Top Eliminator winner turned out to be the Chrisman-Cannon Chrysler B/D. For their win, they received the world's largest drag trophy - 6'4" tall and 200 pounds. Their best times during the meet were 10.69 and 136.57 mph. Before the end of the year, Chrisman racked up a couple more TE victories at Lions and steadily improved in his times. The 1958 season would see the evolution of the Chrisman-Cannon injected B dragster into the iconic Hustler supercharged Chrysler A dragster and cement its place in drag racing history.

Notes: The team of Sampson, Dillon, and Mudersbach spent three weeks building a completely new dragster after setting a new world record in Sampson's old dragster at Perryville on Apr. 14. Sampson was the driver, Dillon, the engine builder, and Mudersbach built the chassis. They got a brand new '57 Olds engine from Bill Money and spent $1,000 turning it into a racing engine. The new car was ready for its first outing at Perryville on June 2. It set a new A Open Gas national record of 140.61 mph. In its first outing, it broke that record with a run of 141.78 mph. With impressive times, they towed to Long Beach Drag Strip for the Drag News Invitational. They set a new track and world record for unblown dragsters with 10.34 and 141.95 mph. They also copped Top Eliminator at the big event. It seemed that every time they ran, they set new national marks. At Perryville, on July 7, they upped the world record to 145.16 mph. Then, on Aug. 4 at Perryville, they set a new official world record of 147.53 mph. At the 2-day ATAA regional championships at Lions Drag Strip on July 20/21, he set a new national record of 9.935. All this success in the new dragster set them up for even greater success at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in September. They won Top Eliminator at the 1957 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City over LeRoy Mackey from Corpus Christi, TX, driving an A/MR. They turned 10.42 at 141.50 mph. In addition to the trophies, they won a '57 f.i. Chevy engine, washing machine, and a $350 cam. Buddy Sampson took the Chevy engine and left the trio to go out on his own. In the months after the Nationals win, Dillon and Mudersbach competed with the dragster in Arizona and California.
