Notes: Four factory '65 Comets with the 427 SOHC engine went to Nicholson, Proffit, Beswick and Delorean; a number of others (like this one) were outfitted with the 427 Hi-riser wedge. It's possible this was replaced with a SOHC when that engine became more available. |

Notes: Injected gas, AWB. Crashed car at NYNS around August of 1966. Came back with Mustang, now with stretched nose. Ran car through 1967 at least. Ran this car on fuel at times. Unsure if 9.96 at Ontario in April was fuel or gas. |

Notes: Fuel injected. These times are on gas. Phil Bonner was one of the first funny car superstars with the match bash “Daddy Warbucks” Falcon. The Holman & Moody prepared 1964 Falcon was built as a gas powered A/FX, but “Daddy Warbucks” transformed quickly. By the end of 1965, Bonner had added injectors and nitro to the 427 SOHC that Don Martin tuned. The “Daddy Warbucks” car ran tens in 1964; by the time the car retired it ran 8.94 at 155.70 in early 1966. Bonner won the NASCAR Winternationals in the Frank Vega sponsored Falcon. The Match Race Madness section of the June 1966 Super Stock magazine has Bonner losing to Malcolm Durham at Capitol Raceway after breaking in the first round. The next month’s issue had Bonner beating Durham three straight at Cecil County. Phil was a very popular match racer with this wheelstanding match bash funny car. Notes: Schartman took over driving chores of the "Ugly Duckling" from Nicholson early in the 1964 season, when Nicholson's hardtop coupe was finished. The wagon body style was used rather than sexier Cyclone in attempt to get more static weight over the rear tires. Entire front end, including bumper, was fiberglass. Multi-page interview with Schartman in the 3/65 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated; times quoted from that article. By July '64 the wagon had been shipped to Hawaii and was being run under the Pflueger Lincoln-Mercury (Honolulu) banner, with Earle "Safari" Char driving. This was apparently a short-term lease arrangement, as Schartman was back to driving the wagon at the Nationals at IRP later in the year. |
