Notes: When I saw it at Irwindale in 72, it was powered by a Bishop and Buehl built blown gas 392. Low 8's at 175 plus were the norm. It ran the So-Cal blown gas funny car circuit. Troxel later ran a RED top fueler. |

Notes: Fuel injected. These times are on gas. Phil Bonner was one of the first funny car superstars with the match bash “Daddy Warbucks” Falcon. The Holman & Moody prepared 1964 Falcon was built as a gas powered A/FX, but “Daddy Warbucks” transformed quickly. By the end of 1965, Bonner had added injectors and nitro to the 427 SOHC that Don Martin tuned. The “Daddy Warbucks” car ran tens in 1964; by the time the car retired it ran 8.94 at 155.70 in early 1966. Bonner won the NASCAR Winternationals in the Frank Vega sponsored Falcon. The Match Race Madness section of the June 1966 Super Stock magazine has Bonner losing to Malcolm Durham at Capitol Raceway after breaking in the first round. The next month’s issue had Bonner beating Durham three straight at Cecil County. Phil was a very popular match racer with this wheelstanding match bash funny car. Notes: Injected gas. Also ran fuel. The McCoy team ran two Comets in 1966, the other driven by Ron Reilly or Ron Riley. One of the cars is the ex-Hayden Proffitt Comet. I think it's the one Reilly drove. These times may have been fuel, maybe gas. |

Notes: Fred Beall at www.georgiadragracing.com recalls seeing this early Mustang funny and believes that this was a cammer (SOHC) powered car. It ran injected on gas and competed in NASCAR's Super Ultra Stock (S/US) class. It may have been one of the original long-nose Mustangs built by Holman & Moody. Other factoids: Owner Bondy Long was from Camden, S.C. (The name "Bowani" is a combination of the first names of the three Long brothers: Bondy, Walter and Nicky.) Bondy Long's first love was drag racing, but he fielded a series of Bowani Ford teams in NASCAR roundy-round racing from 1963-68. Most certainly the youngest car owner in NASCAR oval racing to win a championship (he was 25 in 1965), his biggest successes came in 1964-65 with driver Ned Jarrett. He continued to sponsor drag cars after leaving the ovals in 1968. |
