Notes: Bob had a so-so season in '84, winning the NHRA Summernationals and the World Finals at Pomona, where he really picked up the pace by setting a new NHRA Pro Stock record of 7.61. So, going into '85, the Glidden team was optimistic. Glidden returned to Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, dominating the event. He reset the NHRA record three times before leaving it at 7.53, and he also reset the speed record to 186.87. He was the only Pro Stock car to run 7.5s, which he did on every run. A 7.55/186.87 qualified #1, and his 7.53/185.87 advanced when Roy Hill fouled. In the second round, Gordie Rivera fouled while Bob moved on with a 7.58/177.44. In the semifinals, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.72/176 with a 7.59 at only 171.55. Meeting him in the finals was Warren Johnson. Glidden took his 42nd NHRA National Event victory with a 7.58/184.04 over Johnson's 7.77/179. Everyone expected more of the same at the NHRA Gatornationals, where once again Bob qualified #1, this time with a 7.61/183.97. But in the first round, Glidden's 7.73/157.83 advanced when Don Campanello broke. At the top end of the track, Bob had a door blow off his T-Bird. Glidden had some help in the pits from Rickie Smith, who helped reinstall it. But the opening round also saw Johnson step up from his #2 qualifying 7.63 to a 7.55. No worry yet as Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round two with his own 7.55 at 184.80 (Top Speed). Warren again went 7.55. In the semifinals, Dempsey Hardy fouled, and Glidden advanced with a 7.57/184.50. Once again, Johnson ran his third straight, 7.55, over Rivera to face Bob in the final. Now it was worry time as Johnson had lane choice and an edge in the ET department. Sure enough, he held it in the final, where Warren's 7.60/183 beat Bob's 7.68/170. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Glidden was having trouble as he could only run a best of 7.83/179.35 to qualify #13. Warren was on the pole with a 7.65. Glidden's 7.93/178.35 survived when Iaconio shut off in the first round. Due to Bob's poor qualifying spot, he met Johnson in round two, with Johnson definitely holding the upper hand after a first-round 7.73. But in their match, Bob improved to a 7.72/179.28 to trailer Warren's 7.79/179. Bob improved ever further in the semifinals when his 7.67/180.94 advanced over a fouling Campanello. So, here's the part where Bob wins the race, right? Wrong, Butch Leal, who had only run 7.87 in his semifinal win, is Bob's final-round opponent. Leal gets out and wins for Pontiac for the first time in the NHRA Pro Stock competition with a 7.73/179, stopping Bob's 7.80/167. This was the first time since July of '79 that someone other than Glidden, Johnson, Iaconio, or the late Lee Shepherd had won an NHRA National event. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.58/183.89 qualified #3 behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison car and Johnson. Glidden's 7.67/181.81 advanced in the first round, when Ronnie Manchester fouled, and in round two, his 7.71 beat Hardy, who crossed the centerline. It was a battle of T-Birds in the semifinals, but Bob's 7.68/182.11 took the measure of Iaconio's 7.73/179. It was Johnson vs. Glidden for the final for the third time in four events. But for the second time, Johnson got the victory when his 7.61/178 was too much for Bob's 7.67/183.07. Glidden typically ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, and '85 looked no different when his 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.52 took the pole, but in the first round, he lucked out when Don Coonce fouled because Bob broke and slowed down to 8.76/104.67 to win. The Glidden's installed another engine for round two, but his 7.72/179.42 lost to a quick-leaving Leal, who beat him with a 7.73/178. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Bob's 7.56/184.04 qualified #4. He beat Joe Lepone in round one, with a 7.61/180.36, and in round two, another 7.61 at 182.18 advanced when Manchester fouled. He again fell to Leal in the semifinals who's holeshot 7.66/181 beat Glidden's quicker 7.62/182.33. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he set track records of 7.53/186.25 in qualifying #1. But again, he only lasted until the semifinals. This time, Allen's 7.66/179 beat Bob's 7.72/183. It had to be frustrating after dominating the season opener and not tasting victory since, but the Gliddens got it figured out after Englishtown. They rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals and showed 'em. A track record 7.94 at 171.10 qualified #1. No one else was in the sevens. An 8.00/166.35 beat Campanello, and in round two, his 7.97/172.08 advanced when Mark Rodenberg fouled. A semifinal 7.96/173.07 took out Allen's 8.03/170, putting Bob into the final against Leal. This was Glidden's show, and in the final, his 7.95/172.74 sent Leal's 8.05/172 packing. This was followed by another victory at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob's 7.61/183.67 qualified #1, and he ran 7.61/184.04 over Rivera, a 7.60/185.18 (track record) over a fouling Leal and 7.57/183.67 in the semifinals to beat Johnson's 7.60/183. He met with Allen in the final, and the two had a close race, with Bob's 7.60-83.29 coming out on top over Bruce's 7.61/180. Glidden had a small hiccup at the Pro Stock Challenge race at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car field of the highest NHRA qualifiers for the last 12 months. Hutchens fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.58/185.03 advanced, but in the semifinals, Glidden fouled away a 7.61/182.85 against eventual winner Allen who won with a 7.59/181. That didn't keep Glidden down as he turned around and won the NHRA US Nationals title the next day. His low qualifying 7.57 (at 185.03) was Low ET. Early 7.53/186.87 national records at Pomona Winters, then reset ET National Record at Maple Grove with a 7.497.

Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987.

Notes: Warren started his '93 season on the right foot as he won the NHRA Winternationals. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 with a 7.16/194.04 (Top Speed). He also watched his son Kurt race in his first NHRA race and make it into the semifinals. Warren set Low ET in the first round with a 7.14 at 193.46 to beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/191. A 7.15/193.88 beat Bruce Allen's 7.24/191 in round two, and in the semifinals, his 7.18/192.84 beat Ray Frank's 7.26/189. In the final, he faced the Dodge of Scott Geoffrion. On this day, there was no catching WJ as his 7.24/192.02 beat the Dodge's 7.35/187. He qualified #1 at Arizona as well with a 7.21/192.30 for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. He then ran the race's best times in the first round, with a 7.15/193.05 over Franks' 7.32/189. He was late off the line in round two, and his 7.22/192.14 lost to Allen's 7.24/190. Johnson almost broke into the sixes at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.02/195.05 in qualifying #1. He beat Khoury's 7.25/191 in the first round, with a 7.11/194.09, but he fell to a Rickie Smith holeshot in round two that saw his 7.11/194.25 lose to Smith's 7.17/191. Warren found his way back into the winner's circle at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time at 7.06 (Low ET) at a national record 196.24 got him the spot. He beat a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the first round, with a 7.12/193.84, and in round two, his 7.14/192.47 took out Khoury's 7.22/191. In the semifinals, Mark Pawuk fouled against him, and Johnson advanced with a 7.13/193.59. He faced Larry Morgan in the final, and Larry got out of shape and slowed to 8.13/130 while Warren won his 46 NHRA National Event with a 7.14/193.17. He didn't have long to wait before he won again. The win came at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Johnson set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.09/195.05. He set a new track speed record in the first round, where his 7.10/196.20 beat Rebeschi. A second-round 7.12/195.65 beat Jerry Eckman and a 7.11/195.35 beat his son, Kurt's 7.15/193 in the semifinals. In the final, he met his nemesis, Bob Glidden, and WJ got the victory with a 7.12/195.39 over Glidden's 7.24/192.Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA Oldsmobile SpringNats, Columbus. Qualified No. 1 at 7.16/193.54 - Low ET and Top Speed - and ran the table by beating Todd Tutterow, Ray Franks, Lewis Worden and won the event when his son Kurt fouled in the final (photo).

Notes: What can you say about Warren Johnson? You either love him or hate him, but you have to respect him. His '99 season was nothing short of amazing. He won his fifth NHRA Pro Stock title. He had qualified #1 at 15 of those 22 races and had set Top Speed at every one. He also set Low ET at 13 of those events. Since racing in NHRA Pro Stock, he qualified first 117 times and set Top Speed 173 times. Both were records. Notes: Glidden showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his new T-Bird. On Saturday, he ran a tire shaking 7.71/184.04. In the afternoon, he came out to make another attempt but shut off on the line. His earlier run held on for the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, he faced Warren Johnson; it was probably the best race of the round that saw Warren's 7.53/184.04 beat Bob's 7.55/176.47. Glidden later stated that the car got loose at the top end and that he had to shut it down early. After that dismal showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.49/186.72 to qualify low. Once again, he faced WJ in the first round, but this time /johnson fouled while Bob ran 7.51/183.29 to advance. In round two, the T-Bird shook the tires hard, and his 7.74/183.97 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.69/178. The season's "gamechanger" for Glidden came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 7.54/183.59 behind WJ's 7.53/184. Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round one, and a second-round 7.59/180 took out Joe Lepone. He faced Butch Leal in the semifinals, but after winning their race, he popped the chutes, and the car got out of shape. It got airborne before crashing down and rolling violently. Bob was shaken but unhurt; after he got out of the car, he took off his jacket and hung it over the intake manifold. This was done so no prying eyes could see the work he had done with it. Bob showed up at Baton Rouge with his '85 T-Bird painted with the Cheif Auto Parts, 7/11 colors for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.63/183.22 qualified #10, and in the opening round of eliminations, he got out on Dave Hutchens, and his 7.69/181.48 beat Hutchens' quicker,7.68/179. In round two, Glidden's 7.73/181.82 fell to Reid Whisnant's 7.69/178. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. Bob's 7.60/181.19 qualified #7 and a 7.81/174.45 in the opening round lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.74/173. Things went slightly better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.54/183.89 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.51/185. Another 7.54 at 183.22 beat Hardy's 7.73/180 in round one, but a 7.56/185.11 lost to Hutchens' 7.57/181 in round two. At this point, Glidden was way down in fifth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. WJ was leading by a long shot. | Set the national record at 7.443 at 1986 Summernationals, then reset the national record with an unreal 7.377 at Indy. Photo from Milan, MI, 1986.

Notes: Ran first 500ci seven at Winternationals with a 7.86/174.75, low qualifier at 7.84/174.08. Ended the year with the second of four World championships. Won Bristol IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.890 at 176.81. Dropped two tenths by the end of the year with a 7.655. Number 2 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.775/176.12 (WJ number 1 at 7.762). | Shepherd and the Reher-Morrison team opened their arms to NHRA's 500 cubic inch rule for '82. They had tested their IHRA counterparts in '81 and did well. So, they were looking forward to '82. They started the year at Pomona for the Winternationals, where they qualified #1 with a 7.84/174.08. Lee Shepherd beat Harry Scribner's 8.05/170 in the first round, with a 7.87/174.08. In round two, a 7.86/174.75 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat John Hagen's 8.21/157. In the semifinals, Bob Glidden fouled, and Lee took the win with a 7.84/174.08. In the final, Shepherd ran Frank Iaconio, who was also running 7.8s. Lee slowed to an 8.02/156.52 in the final, giving Iaconio's 7.83/174 the victory. Shepherd more than made up for the loss at the next race, the Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with new NHRA records of 7.77/177.16. He went on to the final by beating Glidden, Dave Hutchens, and Pat Musi with times of 7.86/175.43, 8.10/172.08 (when Dave fouled), and 8.02/174.71. In the final, he met Iaconio again, but this time Lee's 7.88/174.41 beat Frank's 7.89/172 for the win. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, Shepherd qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 7.85/176.81. In round one, a 7.82/174 beat Hutchens, and in the semifinals, a 7.80 (Low ET) at 174 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. In the final, he ran Glidden's EXP. Bob tried hard, but his 8.02/174 lost to Lee's 7.81/174.41. At the fourth race of the NHRA season, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Lee qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.81. It was another eight-car show, and Shepherd beat Joe Lepone and a fouling Glidden in the semifinals to face Iaconio in the final for the third time in '82. Once again, Lee came out on top with a 7.90/173, beating Frank's 7.93/173. At the Springnationals, a 7.81/175.43 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round and Jim Meyer in round two with a 7.90/173.41. In the semifinals, he left on Iaconio and won with a 7.96/173.41 over Frank's 7.93/172. He faced Glidden in the final, and it was a close race, with Bob's 7.92/170 just nipping the Camaro's 7.93/172.74 for the win. These two would meet in the final of the next race as well, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. They qualified one-two, with Lee's 8.29 getting the pole for the eight-car field. Shepherd beat Gene Fasching and John Brumley to face Glidden in the final. Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.27/164.23 over Glidden's right there 8.30/156. Another win came at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 7.82/175.43. In the semifinals, he stopped Iaconio with a 7.80, and in the final, he reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.74/178.57 to stop Johnson's 7.88/175. Out of the first seven races, Shepherd had now won five of them. He didn't win at Englishtown for the Summernationals, although he again qualified #1 (7.79, Low ET). He beat Pat Musi, a fouling Iaconio, and Bob Ingles in the semifinals with a 7.84. In the final, he ran Johnson in his Olds Starfire. It was a close race, but Lee had to settle for runner-up honors with his 7.91/173.74, finishing second to Warren's 7.90/174. It was WJ and Oldsmobile's first NHRA win. | Low qualifier and winner at PHR event at Martin MI with a best of 7.79/174.41. We need to validate the 179.91 qualifying speed from the Golden Gates. That number is directly from the qualifying sheet but could not have come up on the three-digit clocks of the day. Likely was 178.92? Lee did run 179.28 during eliminations. Notes: Glidden had a rough couple of years, but he started to get the handle on his Boss 429 engines in '84. The season started slowly, but he really picked up as the year went on. It began at Pomona, where he qualified #4 with a 7.72. He beat Johnny Dowey in the first round, and in round two, his 7.82 beat Joe Lepone's 7.85. Unfortunately, he fouled against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 behind Shepherd with a 7.66/181.45. He faced Roy Hill in an all-Ford first-round matchup, and Hill won with a 7.87 over Bob's late 7.81/175.43. In April, he had another semifinal finish at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.81/177.86. He got lucky in the first round, when his ailing 8.04 advanced over Gordie Rivera's off pace 8.90. In the second round, he picked up to 7.74/178.92 to beat Lepone's 7.85/176. But once again, it was Shepherd who stopped Glidden in the semis with a 7.83 to Bob's shut off 13.14/57.35. It was the same story at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals; Glidden made it to the semifinals, where he fouled against Shepherd but ran his best speed of the year at 182.92. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.72/182.18. The T-Bird continued to show strength by qualifying #1 at the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan, with a track record 7.68 at 180. It was an eight-car show, and Bob reached the finals by getting past a fouling Don Campanello and then Andy Mannarino in the semifinals with a 7.83. In the final, he came up against #2 qualifier Frank Iaconio. Frank got the jump off the line, and his 7.72/178 held off Glidden's quicker and faster 7.68/179.28 for the win. Bob was going into the NHRA Springnationals in June as the favorite. After all, he had won the event for the past five years, back to '79. He looked good in qualifying, running 7.71 for the #2 spot, but he only lasted until round two, where he fouled against Gene Fasching. He made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 1. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/180.72 and, in the semifinals, got a measure of satisfaction by beating Shepherd's 7.75 with a holeshot and a 7.78. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. It was a good, close race, with Johnson's 7.68/182 nipping Bob's 7.69/180.72. Glidden didn't have to wait long to get his first victory of the year. It came at Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals. Bob set a 7.67 track record at 180.00 to qualify first. He beat Jerry Eckman, Don Nicholson, and a surprising Sam Carroll in the semifinals with a 7.71. He faced his nemesis, Shepherd, in the final. Bob easily drove away from the Texas Camaro with a 7.71/178.21, beating Lee's 7.77/177. The Glidden team was still feeling pretty good when they rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where WJ's 8.06/171 beat his 8.13/169.81. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.70/180.00. But once again, WJ stopped him in the semifinals. If any other car got stronger as the year went on, it had to be Warren Johnson's Olds. These two fought it out at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Bob won the qualifying battle, running 7.64/180.72 for the #1 spot just ahead of WJ's 7.66. Both worked their way to the final, Glidden with a 7.66 over Mannarino, a 7.71 over Iaconio, and a 7.72 in the semifinals over Ken Dondero's 7.82. WJ had about a tenth over Glidden in eliminations, running 7.63, 7.64, and 7.63. So, it looked like WJ would get an easy win in the final. It wasn't so easy, as somewhere along the line, Bob was able to pick up to a 7.65/180.36 that narrowly lost to WJ's 7.63/181. It was a close race. At the NHRA World Finals, it was apparent to all that Bob hadn't just caught up with his 429 program; he was now ahead of everyone else. He got the pole with a 7.64/181.81 (Top Speed) and then ran 7.6s regularly. An opening round 7.66/180.72 beat Gene Fasching while a 7.68/180.36 in round two beat Rickie Smith. He stopped Shepherd's ailing Camaro in the semifinals with a 7.64/181.45. In the final, he ran Butch Leal. A final round 7.615 (Low ET) at 181.81 got the victory over Leal's 7.81/162. It was a dominating performance.

Notes: Scott replaced Darrell Alderman after Darrell was suspended. First NHRA Pro Stocker in the 7.0s at Maple Grove PA 1992. | Scott started the '92 season by qualifying #5 at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona with a 7.21/192.02. Another 7.21 at 191.28 beat Joe Lepone Jr.'s 7.23/190 in the first round, but he slowed to a 7.29/191.08 in round two that lost to Warren Johnson's 7.25/191. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.24/190.75 qualified #3. He beat Paul Rebeschi's 7.32/188 in the first round, with a 7.27/190.39, but in the second round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline giving Jim Yates an easy win. The Pro Stock cars were flying at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, and Geoffrion was no exception. He qualified #2 with a 7.17/192.22. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.18/191.16 in the first round, against Lepone. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals. Scott set a new ET record in qualifying #1 with a 7.13. His speed on the run was 192.55. As well as he was running, once again he failed to make it past the second round. A 7.16/192.30 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.21/190 in the first round, but in round two both he and Mark Pawuk ran 7.19 (Scott at 191.81), but Pawuk got the win light. Rockingham hosted the Winston Invitational in April and Geoffrion qualified #2 with a 7.19/191.48. A 7.24/191.53 in the first round, beat Harry Scribner, but his second round rut remained intact when Don Beverley ran a 7.26/191 to beat his 7.31/189.55 in round two. After going no further than round two at the first four races, he made it into the final at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. In qualifying it didn't look like Scott ran very well as his 7.30/189.55 only qualified #12. But he stepped it up by doing some great driving and cutting the lights. His 7.27/187.93 in the first round, beat Jerry Eckman's quicker 7.25/189. In round two, he faced WJ and the two had a close race with Scott's 7.27/189.11 beating Warren's 7.28/190. In the semifinals, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.18 at 191.00 that beat Larry Morgan's 7.27/190. This set up a final round meeting with Don Beverley. It would have been a good race, but Geoffrion's car slowed to a 10.99/80.69 with problems giving Beverley's 7.20/191 the win. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he again made the final. He qualified #1 with a 7.23/191.85. A first-round 7.25/192.02 took out Bob Glidden's 7.30/190, while in round two a 7.30/190 beat Eckman's 7.41/187. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.25/190.92 when Morgan fouled against him. That set up a final round meeting between him and WJ. Geoffrion ran a good 7.31/190.03, but it wasn't enough as Johnson set both ends of the track record with a 7.22/192 for the victory. Still, two runners-up in a row was nothing to sneeze at for the Dodge team. The next race was the NHRA Springnationals in mid-June. Scott qualified #2 with a 7.26/190.15. He ran 7.28/189.54 and 7.31/188.87 to beat Lepone and Yates in the first two rounds to reach the semifinals. There he met Morgan's Olds. The two left together, but Larry's 7.31/189 beat the Dodge's 7.33/188.24.

Notes: Alderman started the season by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.32/188.95. He beat Butch Leal in the first round, with a 7.31/188.60 and a 7.32/187.93 beat Bob Glidden's 7.36/187 in round two. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman's 7.30/188 with a 7.35/186.95. He had problems at the NHRA Arizona Nationals and only managed to qualify #14 with a 7.37/186.52. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. Houston was the next stop for the NHRA Supernationals. Alderman qualified #10 with a 7.30/187.57, and in the first round, he lost to Gordie Rivera. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.41/186.02 was the fourth alternate, and at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he was the first alternate at 7.34/187.93. But after those few hiccups, he qualified #1 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 7.25 (Low ET) at 189.27. He beat Jerry Haas in the opening round, and a 7.33/188 in round two stopped Joe Lepone's 7.35. In the semifinals, his 7.27/187 beat Glidden's 7.31, and he moved into the final against Larry Morgan. Larry also ran 7.27 in his semifinal race, so it was a close final between these two. It was close, but Morgan belted out another 7.27/189 to win over Alderman's 7.30/189.63. Darrell ran well again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.30/188.79 qualified #2. He beat future teammate Scott Geoffrion in round one and a 7.44 in round two advanced when Glidden broke. But in the semifinals, Morgan got him again. This time, Larry's 7.33 easily beat Darrell's 7.43. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Alderman qualified #8 with a 7.40/184.08. He beat Allen with a 7.45/183.18 (to Allen's 7.45/184!) and Morgan with a 7.46/184.35 in the first two rounds before losing to Rickie Smith's 7.46/184 in the semifinal despite a quicker 7.42/183. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 7.34 qualified #3, and in the opening round, he ran 7.35 over Rivera. Another 7.35/186 in round two dropped Morgan's 7.40, and he improved to 7.32 (Low ET and a track record) at 184.79 in the semifinal to beat Smith. In the final, he ran Jerry Eckman, and Eckman picked up to a 7.32/186 to win over Darrell's 7.35/186.64 runner-up effort. The next race on the NHRA calendar was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Alderman qualified #1 with a 7.27 (Low ET) at 189.71. An opening round 7.37/188.36 beat Joe Folgore's 7.45/184. Then he resorted to his quick reflexes to win the race. First, he ran 7.34/188.40 to beat Smith's quicker 7.31/187 in round two, and a 7.35/188.36 beat Glidden's quicker 7.31/188 in the semifinal. He continued this into the final, where his 7.32/187.89 picked up the victory over Mark Pawuk's 7.31/187. This was an impressive win. Things did not go as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.78/175.71. Another 7.78/175.16 beat Kenny Delco in round one, but he was late off the line in round two, and his 7.75/175.74 lost to "Tricky Rickie" Smith's 7.82/174. Still, after this race, he sat in the fourth position in points, behind Warren Johnson, Jerry Eckman, and Morgan. Extraordinary best times in qualifying #1 at Ennis at 7.184/190.88. Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Bob had one of his best seasons ever in '89. It started by winning the Winternationals at Pomona. Although he only qualified #5 with a 7.36/188.63 he ran a first-round 7.30/188.63 over Mark Pawuk, a 7.31/188 in the second round over Don Beverley and a semifinal 7.33/188.08 beat Warren Johnson's 7.37/187. He improved to a meet's best of 7.29/188.71 (Low ET & Top Speed) in the final over Frank Iaconio. Another win came at the next event, the NHRA Supernationals. There he qualified #2 with a 7.29 and ran another 7.29 over Iaconio in the first round. A second round 7.31 beat Butch Leal, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 7.26/189.71 over Bruce Allen's 7.29/188. In the final he met with upstart Morris Johnson Jr. And in taking the win, Bob set a new NHRA record of 7.25/190.07 (Top Speed). Glidden set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the Gatornationals. He was running well and met and beat WJ in the second round with a 7.34/188 to Warren's 7.42. But in the semifinal, he ran Darrell Alderman and they both ran 7.38s, but the Dodge got the win. He once again got Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the Southern Nationals with track records of 7.34/188.24. On his way to another win, he beat Pawuk, Whisnant, and Larry Morgan in that order. His semifinal win over Morgan was close with a 7.40/186.06 just beating Morgan's 7.41/186. In the final, he took on Bruce Allen and a final round 7.35/186.99 scored the win over Bruce's 7.42/185. He won his fourth race in the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.28/190.07. He beat Allen in the first round, with a 7.29 and a second round 7.33/189 beat Rickie Smith. In the semifinal, Bob's 7.30/189 beat Alderman's Dodge. In the final, he was up against arch rival WJ and a final round 7.28/189.67 got the win over Warren's 7.37. At the next event on the tour, the Cajun Nationals, Bob got beat by Ken Koretsky in the first round, after qualifying #3 with a 7.43/185.22. He wasn't down for long as he came back to win his fifth race of the season at the Springnationals. There he set a track record 7.35 in qualifying and Top Speed of the meet at 187.07. He ran 7.39/186 over Morgan, 7.38/185 over Beverley, and a semifinal 7.41/186 over Pawuk to reach the finals against Joe Lepone. Bob took the win with a 7.41/185.95 over Joe's 7.49/183. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals where Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.35/186.79. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first race with a 7.38/185.07, but he fouled away a 7.43/185.22 in the second round against Iaconio who ran 7.48/185 for the win. The next stop was Englishtown for the Summernationals. Again Bob qualified #1 with track records of 7.34/188.75. Unfortunately for Bob, in the first round, Leal pulled a holeshot that Glidden couldn't catch and Bob lost in the first round, for the second time in the season. He rebounded nicely by winning his sixth race at the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #1 with a track record 7.83 at 175.60. Bob beat WJ in the first round, and a 7.84/175 beat Lepone in round two. A semifinal 7.83/175 took care of Allen's Beretta and another 7.83/175.23 beat Eckman's 7.93 in the final. The next stop on the tour was the California Nationals. He used a 7.33/188.79 (Top Speed) to qualify #3 in the field. In the first round, he ran another 7.33 at 188.12 to beat Pawuk. In round two, a 7.37/187.30 beat Koretsky and a semifinal 7.37/187.38 beat Smith. In the final, Glidden met WJ and a 7.33/188.16 gave Bob his 74th NHRA National event victory. Seattle was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. A 7.37/187.11 qualified the Probe in the #5 spot and a first-round 7.40/185.68 just beat Gary Herman's 7.40/186. He ran another 7.40/185.56 in round two when Alderman fouled. In the semifinal, Allen's 7.37/186 beat Bob's 7.42/185.91. The Northstar Nationals was the next race on the schedule and Bob got his eighth pole of the season with a 7.44/185.26. He beat Kenny Delco in the first round, and a second round 7.47 beat Morris Johnson Jr's 7.51. In the semifinals, a 7.48 advanced into the final when Iaconio fouled. In the final, he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.43/185.98, but he lost to Allen for the second straight event. The US Nationals came next and Bob got out qualified by the Reher-Morrison team. His 7.35/187.22 was second to Bruce's 7.35/186. Glidden was shooting for his 75 NHRA win and was feeling good about it at Indy. In the first round a 7.40/186.91 beat Iaconio's 7.43/185. In round two, WJ broke a transmission and Bob motored to another 7.40/186.99 win. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.39/187.30 (Top Speed) when Beverley fouled. In the final, he met Morgan and lost to a 7.36/185 by the Olds driver to his 7.42/187.07. He finally got that 75 win at the next event, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. He qualified #5 with a 7.35/188.00 and a first-round 7.38/187.50 got past a fouling Lee Dean. In round two a 7.35/187.53 beat Beverley's 7.38/186. In the semifinal, he and Alderman had a close one with Bob's 7.35/187.50 beating the Dodge's 7.36/187. In the final, he met Allen who wasn't gonna make it easy. Glidden took the win with a 7.36/187.46 to Bruce's close 7.37/186. The next race was the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex. Bob used a 7.29/188.08 to qualify #3. He beat Nick Nikolis in the first round, with a 7.35/188.32. He was to face Allen in the second race, but Allen had crashed at the top end after winning his first-round race. The Beretta was unable to make the second round so Glidden got a solo. On the solo pass he ran another 7.35/187.81. In the semifinal he met WJ. Johnson got a slight holeshot and took a 7.37/187 victory to Bob's 7.36/187.34. The second to last race of the season was the Fallnationals. A 7.42/185.41 gave Bob the #4 spot in the field. He beat Don Coonce in the first round, and a 7.40/185 beat Kenny Delco in round two. He won a close one over his rival WJ in the semifinal with Glidden's 7.41/185 beating WJ's 7.42/185. In the final he ran Alderman and Bob was a bit slow on tree when Darrell took a 7.42/186 win over the Probe's 7.40/185.98.

Notes: Photo from 1989. Bob debuted his Probe in October at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. To say that it was successful was an understatement. Glidden set a 7.27 NHRA national record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was a new track record 189.95. On top of that, he went on to win his 66th NHRA victory. He started his trip into victory circle with a 7.44/185.26 over Harry Scribner. A second-round 7.40/186.56 beat Bruce Allen's 7.45/185 and in the semifinals, Frank Sanchez fouled against him and a 7.54/189.07 moved Bob into the final. There he faced rival Warren Johnson and WJ almost spoiled the Probe's debut. Glidden left first in the final and his 7.33/189.07 just nipped WJ's quicker 7.31/188. He also won the next NHRA event, the Fallnationals held at Firebird Raceway. Once again, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.44/186.68. After a fairly easy first-round, he beat Butch Leal in round two with a 7.50/185 and in the semifinals, his 7.45/186 stopped Allen. One more time, the final featured WJ and Glidden. This time Bob's 7.44/186.48 beat WJ's 7.47/186. The only thing Bob didn't get there was Top Speed as Allen managed to get that. The season ended back at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. Glidden didn't get the pole as his 7.38/188.90 (Top Speed) was just a tick behind WJ. He beat Gordie Rivera's 7.50/186 in the opening round with a 7.45/187.73 and in round two, his 7.42/187.77 took out Leal. But in the semifinals, he lost to a holeshot by Morris Johnson Jr. That saw his 7.41/187.81 lose to Morris's 7.46/185. Still, two wins out of three events in the Probe was pretty successful in anyone's book and he nailed his fourth straight NHRA Pro Stock Championship and ninth overall.

Notes: Rick Howard (qualifying) photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Forty-nine Pro Stockers (most of '96) came to Indy and 5-time winner Yates out qualified them all with Low ET of the Meet 7.04/195.82. A holeshot in round one, beat Bob Glidden before knocking out Troy Coughlin to reach the semis. Kurt Johnson's holeshot ends the day for Yates. (Also ran a 6.910/198.85 during Gainesville testing in December.)
