Notes: Bob had a so-so season in '84, winning the NHRA Summernationals and the World Finals at Pomona, where he really picked up the pace by setting a new NHRA Pro Stock record of 7.61. So, going into '85, the Glidden team was optimistic. Glidden returned to Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, dominating the event. He reset the NHRA record three times before leaving it at 7.53, and he also reset the speed record to 186.87. He was the only Pro Stock car to run 7.5s, which he did on every run. A 7.55/186.87 qualified #1, and his 7.53/185.87 advanced when Roy Hill fouled. In the second round, Gordie Rivera fouled while Bob moved on with a 7.58/177.44. In the semifinals, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.72/176 with a 7.59 at only 171.55. Meeting him in the finals was Warren Johnson. Glidden took his 42nd NHRA National Event victory with a 7.58/184.04 over Johnson's 7.77/179. Everyone expected more of the same at the NHRA Gatornationals, where once again Bob qualified #1, this time with a 7.61/183.97. But in the first round, Glidden's 7.73/157.83 advanced when Don Campanello broke. At the top end of the track, Bob had a door blow off his T-Bird. Glidden had some help in the pits from Rickie Smith, who helped reinstall it. But the opening round also saw Johnson step up from his #2 qualifying 7.63 to a 7.55. No worry yet as Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round two with his own 7.55 at 184.80 (Top Speed). Warren again went 7.55. In the semifinals, Dempsey Hardy fouled, and Glidden advanced with a 7.57/184.50. Once again, Johnson ran his third straight, 7.55, over Rivera to face Bob in the final. Now it was worry time as Johnson had lane choice and an edge in the ET department. Sure enough, he held it in the final, where Warren's 7.60/183 beat Bob's 7.68/170. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Glidden was having trouble as he could only run a best of 7.83/179.35 to qualify #13. Warren was on the pole with a 7.65. Glidden's 7.93/178.35 survived when Iaconio shut off in the first round. Due to Bob's poor qualifying spot, he met Johnson in round two, with Johnson definitely holding the upper hand after a first-round 7.73. But in their match, Bob improved to a 7.72/179.28 to trailer Warren's 7.79/179. Bob improved ever further in the semifinals when his 7.67/180.94 advanced over a fouling Campanello. So, here's the part where Bob wins the race, right? Wrong, Butch Leal, who had only run 7.87 in his semifinal win, is Bob's final-round opponent. Leal gets out and wins for Pontiac for the first time in the NHRA Pro Stock competition with a 7.73/179, stopping Bob's 7.80/167. This was the first time since July of '79 that someone other than Glidden, Johnson, Iaconio, or the late Lee Shepherd had won an NHRA National event. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.58/183.89 qualified #3 behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison car and Johnson. Glidden's 7.67/181.81 advanced in the first round, when Ronnie Manchester fouled, and in round two, his 7.71 beat Hardy, who crossed the centerline. It was a battle of T-Birds in the semifinals, but Bob's 7.68/182.11 took the measure of Iaconio's 7.73/179. It was Johnson vs. Glidden for the final for the third time in four events. But for the second time, Johnson got the victory when his 7.61/178 was too much for Bob's 7.67/183.07. Glidden typically ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, and '85 looked no different when his 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.52 took the pole, but in the first round, he lucked out when Don Coonce fouled because Bob broke and slowed down to 8.76/104.67 to win. The Glidden's installed another engine for round two, but his 7.72/179.42 lost to a quick-leaving Leal, who beat him with a 7.73/178. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Bob's 7.56/184.04 qualified #4. He beat Joe Lepone in round one, with a 7.61/180.36, and in round two, another 7.61 at 182.18 advanced when Manchester fouled. He again fell to Leal in the semifinals who's holeshot 7.66/181 beat Glidden's quicker 7.62/182.33. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he set track records of 7.53/186.25 in qualifying #1. But again, he only lasted until the semifinals. This time, Allen's 7.66/179 beat Bob's 7.72/183. It had to be frustrating after dominating the season opener and not tasting victory since, but the Gliddens got it figured out after Englishtown. They rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals and showed 'em. A track record 7.94 at 171.10 qualified #1. No one else was in the sevens. An 8.00/166.35 beat Campanello, and in round two, his 7.97/172.08 advanced when Mark Rodenberg fouled. A semifinal 7.96/173.07 took out Allen's 8.03/170, putting Bob into the final against Leal. This was Glidden's show, and in the final, his 7.95/172.74 sent Leal's 8.05/172 packing. This was followed by another victory at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob's 7.61/183.67 qualified #1, and he ran 7.61/184.04 over Rivera, a 7.60/185.18 (track record) over a fouling Leal and 7.57/183.67 in the semifinals to beat Johnson's 7.60/183. He met with Allen in the final, and the two had a close race, with Bob's 7.60-83.29 coming out on top over Bruce's 7.61/180. Glidden had a small hiccup at the Pro Stock Challenge race at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car field of the highest NHRA qualifiers for the last 12 months. Hutchens fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.58/185.03 advanced, but in the semifinals, Glidden fouled away a 7.61/182.85 against eventual winner Allen who won with a 7.59/181. That didn't keep Glidden down as he turned around and won the NHRA US Nationals title the next day. His low qualifying 7.57 (at 185.03) was Low ET. Early 7.53/186.87 national records at Pomona Winters, then reset ET National Record at Maple Grove with a 7.497.

Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987.

Notes: Warren started his '93 season on the right foot as he won the NHRA Winternationals. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 with a 7.16/194.04 (Top Speed). He also watched his son Kurt race in his first NHRA race and make it into the semifinals. Warren set Low ET in the first round with a 7.14 at 193.46 to beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/191. A 7.15/193.88 beat Bruce Allen's 7.24/191 in round two, and in the semifinals, his 7.18/192.84 beat Ray Frank's 7.26/189. In the final, he faced the Dodge of Scott Geoffrion. On this day, there was no catching WJ as his 7.24/192.02 beat the Dodge's 7.35/187. He qualified #1 at Arizona as well with a 7.21/192.30 for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. He then ran the race's best times in the first round, with a 7.15/193.05 over Franks' 7.32/189. He was late off the line in round two, and his 7.22/192.14 lost to Allen's 7.24/190. Johnson almost broke into the sixes at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.02/195.05 in qualifying #1. He beat Khoury's 7.25/191 in the first round, with a 7.11/194.09, but he fell to a Rickie Smith holeshot in round two that saw his 7.11/194.25 lose to Smith's 7.17/191. Warren found his way back into the winner's circle at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time at 7.06 (Low ET) at a national record 196.24 got him the spot. He beat a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the first round, with a 7.12/193.84, and in round two, his 7.14/192.47 took out Khoury's 7.22/191. In the semifinals, Mark Pawuk fouled against him, and Johnson advanced with a 7.13/193.59. He faced Larry Morgan in the final, and Larry got out of shape and slowed to 8.13/130 while Warren won his 46 NHRA National Event with a 7.14/193.17. He didn't have long to wait before he won again. The win came at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Johnson set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.09/195.05. He set a new track speed record in the first round, where his 7.10/196.20 beat Rebeschi. A second-round 7.12/195.65 beat Jerry Eckman and a 7.11/195.35 beat his son, Kurt's 7.15/193 in the semifinals. In the final, he met his nemesis, Bob Glidden, and WJ got the victory with a 7.12/195.39 over Glidden's 7.24/192.Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA Oldsmobile SpringNats, Columbus. Qualified No. 1 at 7.16/193.54 - Low ET and Top Speed - and ran the table by beating Todd Tutterow, Ray Franks, Lewis Worden and won the event when his son Kurt fouled in the final (photo).

Notes: What can you say about Warren Johnson? You either love him or hate him, but you have to respect him. His '99 season was nothing short of amazing. He won his fifth NHRA Pro Stock title. In NHRA's 22 race schedule, he was the only driver that qualified for every race. He also had the most wins, as his seven victories brought his career total to 79. He had qualified #1 at 15 of those 22 races and had set Top Speed at every one. He also set Low ET at 13 of those events. Since racing in NHRA Pro Stock, he qualified first 117 times and set Top Speed 173 times. Both were records. Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762/179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division 2 race, winning with a holeshot 7.95/166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91/168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87/174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, and an 8.02/171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June, but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84, but a final run of 7.88/175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74/178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91/175.09. A first-round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90/174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91/173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85/173.07 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first-round race, Lee's 7.83/174 beat Johnson's 7.87/173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA Pro Stock tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 7.89/174.75. A first-round 7.93/173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (Low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified #1. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on October 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.660 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA Pro Stock to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69/179.28 beat Lee's 7.74/179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.73, setting Top Speed at 178.92, and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78/176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86/177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in November. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.89/178.57. He was the only pro stocker in the sevens at the event. A first-round 8.03/176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92/177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final, he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84/175.43 (Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.79/175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96/172.

Notes: Warren started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.21/192.76 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He repeated that number in the first round at 192.55 to defeat Gary Brown's 7.32/188. In round two, his 7.25/191.89 beat Scott Geoffrion's 7.29/191. But he slowed to 7.32/189.95 in the semi-final, and that wasn't good enough as he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman's 7.25/190. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 again with a 7.25/191.24. In the opening round, he set Top Speed with a 7.20/192.10 that took out Mark Pawuk's 7.24/190 effort. He slowed to 7.29/190.39 in the second round, but it was enough to get around Bruce Allen. In the semi-final, he got out of shape and lost to Eckman again, who ran 7.24/190 to win the race and take a huge points lead. The third NHRA event of the season was the Supernationals held at Houston in the first week of March. WJ slipped to #6 in the qualifying order with a 7.18/193.38 (Top Speed). Larry Morgan pulled off a big upset in the first round where his quick-leaving 7.25/190 beat WJ's 7.19/191.69. His first win of the season came at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 7.15/194.46 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and a 7.14/193.84 in the first round beat Rickie Smith's 7.22/191. Another 7.14 at 194.04 in the second round beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/189. He got "revenge" over Morgan in the semi-final, where his third 7.14 at 193.75 beat Larry's 7.21/191. He finished it with yet another 7.14/193 in the final to beat Eckman's 7.16/192. WJ won his first NHRA Championship this year. He also ran 7.109 at Ennis Fall.

Notes: Started the season with a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.07 at a track record speed of 195.77. A first-round 7.16/194.51 beat David Rampy, while in round two, his 7.19/192.88 beat Jim Yates' close 7.20/191. Kurt Johnson fouled against him in the semifinals, and he ran 7.12/193.92 to advance into the finals. There he met up with Kurt's dad, Warren Johnson. The two had a good race, but WJ's 7.09/195 got the victory over Darrell's 7.12/193. At the NHRA Quality Care Nationals at Arizona, Alderman set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.07 at 194.59. Once again, he worked his way into the final by beating Jerry Haas in round one, with a 7.11/193.79, then Larry Morgan lost to Darrell's 7.15/193.54 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 7.11/193.79 beat Kurt Johnson. He met his teammate Scott Geoffrion in the final, and although both ran 7.11 (Alderman at 194.21), Scott got his second NHRA victory. Alderman qualified #2 at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals with a 7.06/194.84 behind his teammate, Geoffrion's 7.03/196. An opening round 7.13 beat Tim Jost, and in round two, Larry Morgan got out of shape against him. Alderman advanced with a 7.07/195. But in the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner WJ. The Gatornationals was the next event on the NHRA calendar, and Darrell qualified #3 there with a 7.12/195.39. He improved to 7.08/195.31 in the opening round to beat Jost's 7.28/189. In round two, his 7.10/195.77 stopped Morgan at 7.19/193, and a 7.09/196.12 beat Goffrion's 7.13/194 in the semifinal. He faced WJ in the final, and Darrell had lane choice. Unfortunately, Darrell fouled away a 7.11/195.27 in their race, and WJ grabbed the victory with a 7.13/195. Even though no points were involved, Alderman scored a big win at Rockingham for the NHRA Invitational race. He qualified #6 with a 7.11/195.90 and another 7.11 at 194.25 beat Rickie Smith's 7.20/191 in the first round. He got quicker in round two, where his 7.08/194.80 took care of Bob Glidden's 7.19/192. David Rampy's 7.31/183 fell to Alderman's 7.12/193.71 in the semifinal. He ran his teammate in the final, and Darrell got a good light, and his 7.16/193.79 held on to win over Geoffrion's quicker 7.13/193. Things did not go nearly as well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had "only" qualified #12 with a 7.16/194.34, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.20/192.96 lost to Jim Yates' 7.15/190. He came back from that by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 7.11/194.46 qualified #1, and he repeated that time in the first round(at 195.14 for Top Speed)to advance over a broken Mike Thomas. He then set Low ET in round two with a 7.10/194.63 that took out Yates' 7.22/191. Alderman had his closest race in the semifinal, where he used a 7.14/194.42 to beat Kurt Johnson's 7.16/193. Once again, he battled his teammate for the win. This time Alderman made it look easy as his 7.14/190.71 easily beat Scott's 7.21/191. Rick Howard photo from 1994 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. Qualified second at 7.21/193.05. In round one, he defeated Mike Thomas with an improved 7.16/193.92 and got by Mark Osborne to reach the semis. He lost to Jim Yates. Returned after a suspension. The second member of the Holley Six-Second Club on August 5/1994, with a 6.994 at Seattle.

Notes: Frank came close to winning the 1983 NHRA Pro Stock championship but lost to a controversial run at the World Finals. After qualifying number one at 7.650, the points leader was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition, after running 7.80s all year. | Frank won the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.83. A 7.80/175.43 beat Mark Yuill in the first round, while a 7.79 (Low ET and a new track record) at 175.43 beat Rickie Smith's 7.96/173. He slowed to a 7.83 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Whisnant's 8.05. He ran low qualifier Bob Glidden in his new T-Bird in the final. Iaconio won with a 7.81/175.78 over Glidden's off pace 7.99/174. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.71/180.00. Once again, he worked his way to the final by first beating Bubba Corzine with a 7.69 and then Don Campanello with an even better 7.67. He stayed tough in the semifinals, beating Smith with a 7.68. That set up a final-round meeting with Lee Shepherd's low qualifying Camaro. Lee had run as well as 7.64 during eliminations, and that might have been on Frankie's mind in the final, as he bulbed with a 7.75/180.36 while Lee scored the victory with a 7.68/180. In April, Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals, and Frank headed the Pro Stock show with a 7.80/178.92 (Low ET and Top Speed). He got out of shape and lost to Whisnant in round two. On May 1, Maple Grove held its US Manufacturer's Pro Stock Championships. Iaconio set the meet's Low ET at a new track record 7.80, and he also had Top Speed at 178.51. Unfortunately, in round two, he got out of shape and shut off to an 8.08/159.57 that lost to Bob Ingle's 7.97/171. He had another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson before losing to Lee in the final. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals in mid-June. Frank qualified #3 with a 7.79/177.16. Again, he worked his way to the final by running 7.85, 7.84, and 7.83 over Sam Gianino, Joe Lepone Jr., and Don Coonce in that order before meeting Glidden in the final. It was a rematch of the Winternationals final, only this time Bob's 7.79/178 prevailed over Iaconio's 7.83/174.08. Another runner-up finish came in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 behind Glidden and worked his way to the final, fouling against Shepherd. Frank always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals, and '83 was no exception. He set a new track record 7.73 while qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 178.92. In the first round, he beat Lepone's 7.89/175 with a 7.76/178.21. In the second round, he ran identical times to beat Johnson's Cutlass at 7.78/178. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.80/177.51, but it easily covered Butch Leal's 8.02. It was Frank against Lee in the final, and this time Shepherd must have felt that Iaconio had the upper hand as he fouled away a 7.78 while Frank motored to a 7.85/177.16 for the win. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car show with a 7.65 at 180.72. He made his way to the final, where he faced #2 qualifier Johnson. Warren knew Frank was tough, so he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Iaconio won with a 7.72/183.29 (Top Speed). He found himself in another final round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.74 with a 7.76/178.57. A 7.84 in round one beat Roy Hill's Capri. In round two, his 7.87/176 dropped Don Campanello, while a holeshot 7.88/175 beat a quicker WJ at 7.83. But in the final, it was Frank who lost to a holeshot by Glidden. Bob's 7.87/176 beat Frank's quicker 7.85/176.81. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the US Nationals at Indy. Iaconio ran 7.75/178.57 to qualify third behind Glidden and Shepherd. In the opening round, he improved to 7.74/181.81 to defeat Andy Mannarino's 7.92/176. He stopped Smith's 7.81/176 in round two with a 7.77/177.86 before losing a tight battle with Glidden in the semifinal that saw both drivers run 7.74 (Iaconio at 177). Frank's best NHRA national event numbers came at Fremont at 7.650/182.18. He then duplicated the 7.650 at the World Finals.

Notes: Set speed record at Ennis. Rick Howard photo from 1990 NHRA Springnats, Columbus, Ohio. | After finishing fourth in the NHRA points standings in '89, Warren was determined to do better in '90. Things didn't go as well as he hoped as he only scored one NHRA victory in the year. He started his championship quest by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.34/188.75. He improved to a 7.31/188.24 to beat Gordie Rivera's 7.37/187 in the first round, while in round two, his 7.34/188.36 took out Rickie Smith's 7.42/186. A 7.36/188.04 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.34/186 in the semifinals. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.28/188.99 qualified #2. He fouled in the first round, against Scott Geoffrion. Johnson got his lone win of the year at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston on March 4. He qualified #2 with a 7.23/189.67 and beat Steve Schmidt and Rivera in the first two rounds with 7.32/188.36 and 7.27/189.03 times. In the semifinals, a 7.24/189.23 ended Kenny Delco's day and Warren moved into the final against Bruce Allen in the "Reher-Morrison" Beretta. Allen had problems and shut off to an 8.50/117.21 while WJ got the victory with a 7.25/189.11. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #2 for the third straight NHRA event with a 7.30/188.63. He beat Per-Kristian Skinne in the first round, but in round two he lost to Delco. He slipped to #3 in qualifying for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 7.26 at a track record speed of 190.31. Warren worked his way to the final by beating Morris Johnson Jr, Delco, and Jerry Eckman in the semifinals with a 7.32/188. In the final he faced Larry Morgan and WJ fouled giving Morgan an easy win. The NHRA tour then went to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. There, WJ lasted until round two where both he and Bob Glidden ran 7.33, but Glidden got the win. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Warren set a 7.28 track record in qualifying #1. His speed was tops for the meet at 189.71. In round one, he beat Buddy Ingersoll's Buick while a 7.39/188 in the second round beat Eckman's 7.43. He was a little slow off the line in the semifinals and his 7.41/188.95 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.42/185. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.36 qualified him #2 in the show. He made it into the semifinals by beating Joe Folgore and Pawuk, but in the semis, he fouled against eventual winner Eckman. On June 23 he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Warren ran 7.33/187.05 to qualify #2. He beat Frank Sanchez in round one, but in the second round, "Tricky" Rickie Smith pulled a holeshot, and his 7.39/184 managed to beat WJ's 7.37/185. The tenth NHRA race of the season was the Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J. Warren didn't do so well, lasting until the second round before losing to Delco. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, WJ almost walked away with everything. He qualified #1 with a 7.76/177.65 (Top Speed and a track record). He beat Gary Herman, Pawuk, and Smith to reach the finals against Morgan. Both had been running 7.7s with WJ having the edge. In the final, Larry got a great leave and his 7.77/175 held off Warren's track record 7.74 at 176.92. Warren set another tack record of 7.28 at 190.35 in qualifying #1 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. He beat Ingersoll in the first round, but in round two went into heavy tire shake and slowed to a 7.50 that lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.30. Early in August he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 7.30/188.75 times. He continued to look good in round one, with a 7.31/188.63 to beat Don Beverly, but he lasted until the semifinals where his Cutlass broke giving Pawuk a free trip into the finals. WJ must have been getting a little frustrated by the time the teams rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He was setting track records and running really good, but his finishes were not reflecting how good he was running. At Brainerd, a 7.36 qualified #3. He beat Luis Dayer in round one, and Glidden in the second round, but in the semifinals, he got left on by Allen and the little Beretta's 7.34 held on WJ's quicker 7.31.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Bob had his worst season in his 19-year career in '91. He made it into two NHRA finals rounds and won once. This was uncharacteristic of a driver that had won an average of four races a year. The season started with Glidden qualifying #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.31/188.63. He faced Bruce Allen in round one, and his 7.35/188.48 lost to the Reher-Morrison driver's 7.30/189. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.38/186.83 qualified #13. He lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. He qualified #13 again at the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.32/189.27. He beat Larry Morgan in the first round, before losing to Scott Geoffrion's 7.25/188 with a 7.27/189.19. His qualifying improved at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 7.24/190.71 to qualify in the top half of the field for the first time this season (#5). A first-round 7.31/187.96 beat car-builder Jerry Haas' 7.38/188. In round two, Bob ran another 7.31 at 188.63 to down Butch Leal's Beretta at 7.42/185. In the semifinals, he ran a strong 7.29/189.51 but narrowly lost to Darrell Alderman's 7.28/188. Still, it was a good showing for the "Motorcraft" team. At Rockingham for the non-points NHRA Winston Invitational, Glidden again ran strong. He qualified #5 with a 7.26/191.69 and a first-round 7.33/188.63 beat Don Beverley's 7.40/187. In the second round, both he and opponent Allen ran 7.35 (Glidden at 188.52), but Bob got the win. In the semifinals, he got revenge on Alderman by beating him with a 7.33/189.75 to the Dodge driver's 7.39/188. This put Glidden into the final against Warren Johnson. It was a close final, but WJ's 7.29/189 got the victory over Bob's 7.30/190.39. Glidden scored his record 80sh NHRA National event win at the Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April. He qualified #3 at 7.29/189.99 (Top Speed). He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, and a 7.31/189 beat Joe Lepone Jr in round two. He beat the Pontiac of Eckman in the semifinals, and his 7.30/188 outran Jerry's 7.35/185. This put him in the final against WJ. It didn't turn out to be much of a race at WJ fouled and shut off while Bob cooled it with a 7.86/138.35 for the win. Unfortunately, this was Glidden's only win for the year. NHRA's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Bob showed up with a new clutchless 5-speed transmission and qualified #6 with a 7.33/190.23 (Top Speed). He beat Lepone in the first round, with a 7.32/190.19, but in round two, while ahead of WJ, Bob forgot to pull 5th gear, and his 7.50/170.55 lost to WJ's off pace 7.36/188. The next stop was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 7.35/188.79 qualified #7, and in round one, he used a 7.36/188.52 to beat Joe Folgore's 7.41/185. In round two, a holeshot 7.38/187 by Geoffrion beat his 7.37/188.60. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, Bob qualified #7 with a 7.27/190.07. He beat Allen's 7.34/189 in the first round, with a 7.29/188.99. A 7.23/191.04 in round two beat Jim Yates' 7.34/188, and in the semifinals, he had a close one with WJ. A 7.26/189.83 beat WJ's 7.26/190. In the final, he raced Alderman, and he ran a career-best (to this point) 7.21 at a track record speed of 191.16 but still lost to Darrell's 7.20/190.

Notes: Don qualified #6 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.75/178.92. In the opening round, his 7.84176.47 beat Gordie Riveria's 7.95/173. He lasted until the second round before his 7.89/176.47 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.78/177. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a great 7.66/182.18 qualified #3. He beat Rich Marino's Camaro in the first round with a 7.69/181.08. In round two, a 7.78/179.99 beat Reid Whisnant's 7.89/175. But in the semifinals, his 7.77/180.36 lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.75/179. Still, this good performance moved him into fifth place in the NHRA points standings. He qualified #3 again at the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. This time a 7.74 got him the spot. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the first round against Joe Lepone. He really shook up the troops at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.676/184.42 (Top Speed) qualified #2 and set the national speed record. Jerry Eckman fouled against him in the first round, and Coonce advanced with a 7.77/183.29. The car broke on the line again in the second round against Frank Iaconio. A 7.78 qualified #5 at the PHR Championships, but he lost in the first round. Don ran well throughout the year with a best ET of 7.658 in eliminations at the World Finals and 184.42 from Baton Rouge.

Notes: Ran 7.601/183.67 at Pomona Winters 2/86. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | WJ started his season by finishing runner-up to Frank Iaconio at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 for the show with a 7.60/183.67 then got by Bob Glidden's 7.55/176 in the opening round with a 7.53/184.04. Another 7.53 at 183.87 beat Bruce Allen's 7.64/179 in round two and a 7.58/184.42 in the semifinals took out Nick Nikolis' 7.62/181. This put him into the final against Iaconio's T-Bird. Warren was definitely the favorite as Frank was stuck in the 7.6's during eliminations. But in the final, Frank improved to 7.56/185 to win over Johnson's 7.77/181.45. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he faced Glidden again in the first round, as he had only qualified #9 with a 7.61/185.26 while Glidden had taken the pole with a track record 7.49. This time WJ fouled and his 7.79/183.29 lost to Bob's 7.51/183. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals. Warren set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.53/184.80. Bob was right behind at 7.54/183. It seemed that these two would meet in the final and it should have worked out that was as Warren's 7.57/184 beat Allen in the semifinals, but Glidden crashed in his semifinal race while beating Butch Leal. So, in the final WJ soloed for the victory with a 16.91/51.32. He cleaned house at Baton Rouge as well for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.51/186.45 set both ends of the track record in qualifying #1, and he then ran 7.68/182.11 over Ken Dondero's 7.71/181. A round two 7.63/183.78 beat Allen's quicker 7.61/176 and in the semifinals a 7.60/180.90 aced out Joe Lepone's 7.62/178. This put him into the final against Leal. Butch pushed the tree to hard and fouled while Warren got another win with a 7.74/172.81. He almost got three in a row at the NHRA Springnationals. Warren's 7.52 (at 184.16) in qualifying #1 was a new National Trail track record. He then ran 7.60/182.22, 7.64/182.77, and 7.61/183.11 while beating Gordie Rivera, Allen, and Lepone (in that order) to reach the final. Johnson faced Leal for the title and WJ fouled away a 7.65 while Butch's 7.61 got him the win. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and WJ qualified #1 with a 7.53/185.18 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Dondero in the first round, but was upset by Joe Clark in the semifinals when his 7.77/182.55 lost to Clark's 7.76/177.51. Low ET and Top Speed was his at the NHRA Grandnationals where his 7.51/185.18 in qualifying got him the marks. But in the first round, he slept on the line and his 7.54/185.03 lost to Rivera's 7.62/179. Another win followed that where he won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #2 with a 7.45/186.33 behind Glidden's 7.44/186. Warren held a lead in the NHRA points standings, but Glidden had recovered from his Atlanta crash and was now a threat. Both drivers made it into the semifinals where WJ's 7.45 beat Leal while Don Coonce upset Glidden. The final saw Johnson run 7.55/184.80 for the victory over Coonce's 7.63/180. Unfortunately, that was the last win for WJ in '86 as Glidden won all the remaining races except one. Warren still ran well, but Bob had the edge at this point. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, they qualified one, two with Bob's 7.84/175 getting the pole over WJ's 7.89/175.88 (Top Speed). Of course, the two worked their way to the final with Johnson running 8.00/174.01 over Jerry Eckman, 7.98/173.84 over Lepone in round two, and a semifinal 7.98/174.18 took out Allen's 8.02/171. In the final, his 8.03/173.41 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.92/174. He lost in the first round, at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There he qualified #3 with 7.66/181.81, but a first-round 7.76 lost to Stan Mizell's 7.72. Next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Warren became the first 190 mph NHRA Pro Stock when he ran 7.50/190.07 to qualify #4. The speed was backed up for a new NHRA record. As good as his speed was, his ET was off as Glidden ran 7.37/189 to qualify first. Warren's 7.48/189.27 in the first round, beat Sam Gianino, but an off-pace 7.85/184.76 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.64/180 in round two. It was then back to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. His 7.45/186.79 qualified #2 behind the T-Bird from Indiana that ran 7.41/187. But in the first round, Don Campanello's holeshot 7.58/180 beat WJ's 7.57/186.14. NHRA's next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. Warren's 7.51/185.79 took his customary #2 spot behind Glidden's 7.45/185. In the opening round, Mizell fouled against him and Johnson advanced with a 7.62/184.61. In the second round, Don Beverley fouled and Johnson's 7.55/184.53 moved on. He drilled Lepone in the semifinals where his 7.66/183.26 beat Joe's quicker 7.58/181. This put him into the final against Glidden. Bob had the performance advantage and Warren took a chance on the tree and fouled away a 7.56/183 while Glidden picked up his 50th NHRA trophy. Warren watched as his points lead over Glidden dwindled.
