Notes: Glidden showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his new T-Bird. On Saturday, he ran a tire shaking 7.71/184.04. In the afternoon, he came out to make another attempt but shut off on the line. His earlier run held on for the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, he faced Warren Johnson; it was probably the best race of the round that saw Warren's 7.53/184.04 beat Bob's 7.55/176.47. Glidden later stated that the car got loose at the top end and that he had to shut it down early. After that dismal showing, things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.49/186.72 to qualify low. Once again, he faced WJ in the first round, but this time /johnson fouled while Bob ran 7.51/183.29 to advance. In round two, the T-Bird shook the tires hard, and his 7.74/183.97 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.69/178. The season's "gamechanger" for Glidden came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 7.54/183.59 behind WJ's 7.53/184. Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round one, and a second-round 7.59/180 took out Joe Lepone. He faced Butch Leal in the semifinals, but after winning their race, he popped the chutes, and the car got out of shape. It got airborne before crashing down and rolling violently. Bob was shaken but unhurt; after he got out of the car, he took off his jacket and hung it over the intake manifold. This was done so no prying eyes could see the work he had done with it. Bob showed up at Baton Rouge with his '85 T-Bird painted with the Cheif Auto Parts, 7/11 colors for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.63/183.22 qualified #10, and in the opening round of eliminations, he got out on Dave Hutchens, and his 7.69/181.48 beat Hutchens' quicker,7.68/179. In round two, Glidden's 7.73/181.82 fell to Reid Whisnant's 7.69/178. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus. Bob's 7.60/181.19 qualified #7 and a 7.81/174.45 in the opening round lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.74/173. Things went slightly better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.54/183.89 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.51/185. Another 7.54 at 183.22 beat Hardy's 7.73/180 in round one, but a 7.56/185.11 lost to Hutchens' 7.57/181 in round two. At this point, Glidden was way down in fifth in the NHRA Pro Stock points chase. WJ was leading by a long shot. | Set the national record at 7.443 at 1986 Summernationals, then reset the national record with an unreal 7.377 at Indy. Photo from Milan, MI, 1986. |

Notes: Bob had a so-so season in '84, winning the NHRA Summernationals and the World Finals at Pomona, where he really picked up the pace by setting a new NHRA Pro Stock record of 7.61. So, going into '85, the Glidden team was optimistic. Glidden returned to Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, dominating the event. He reset the NHRA record three times before leaving it at 7.53, and he also reset the speed record to 186.87. He was the only Pro Stock car to run 7.5s, which he did on every run. A 7.55/186.87 qualified #1, and his 7.53/185.87 advanced when Roy Hill fouled. In the second round, Gordie Rivera fouled while Bob moved on with a 7.58/177.44. In the semifinals, he beat Ken Dondero's 7.72/176 with a 7.59 at only 171.55. Meeting him in the finals was Warren Johnson. Glidden took his 42nd NHRA National Event victory with a 7.58/184.04 over Johnson's 7.77/179. Everyone expected more of the same at the NHRA Gatornationals, where once again Bob qualified #1, this time with a 7.61/183.97. But in the first round, Glidden's 7.73/157.83 advanced when Don Campanello broke. At the top end of the track, Bob had a door blow off his T-Bird. Glidden had some help in the pits from Rickie Smith, who helped reinstall it. But the opening round also saw Johnson step up from his #2 qualifying 7.63 to a 7.55. No worry yet as Bob beat Frank Iaconio in round two with his own 7.55 at 184.80 (Top Speed). Warren again went 7.55. In the semifinals, Dempsey Hardy fouled, and Glidden advanced with a 7.57/184.50. Once again, Johnson ran his third straight, 7.55, over Rivera to face Bob in the final. Now it was worry time as Johnson had lane choice and an edge in the ET department. Sure enough, he held it in the final, where Warren's 7.60/183 beat Bob's 7.68/170. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Glidden was having trouble as he could only run a best of 7.83/179.35 to qualify #13. Warren was on the pole with a 7.65. Glidden's 7.93/178.35 survived when Iaconio shut off in the first round. Due to Bob's poor qualifying spot, he met Johnson in round two, with Johnson definitely holding the upper hand after a first-round 7.73. But in their match, Bob improved to a 7.72/179.28 to trailer Warren's 7.79/179. Bob improved ever further in the semifinals when his 7.67/180.94 advanced over a fouling Campanello. So, here's the part where Bob wins the race, right? Wrong, Butch Leal, who had only run 7.87 in his semifinal win, is Bob's final-round opponent. Leal gets out and wins for Pontiac for the first time in the NHRA Pro Stock competition with a 7.73/179, stopping Bob's 7.80/167. This was the first time since July of '79 that someone other than Glidden, Johnson, Iaconio, or the late Lee Shepherd had won an NHRA National event. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.58/183.89 qualified #3 behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison car and Johnson. Glidden's 7.67/181.81 advanced in the first round, when Ronnie Manchester fouled, and in round two, his 7.71 beat Hardy, who crossed the centerline. It was a battle of T-Birds in the semifinals, but Bob's 7.68/182.11 took the measure of Iaconio's 7.73/179. It was Johnson vs. Glidden for the final for the third time in four events. But for the second time, Johnson got the victory when his 7.61/178 was too much for Bob's 7.67/183.07. Glidden typically ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, and '85 looked no different when his 7.57 (Low ET) at 181.52 took the pole, but in the first round, he lucked out when Don Coonce fouled because Bob broke and slowed down to 8.76/104.67 to win. The Glidden's installed another engine for round two, but his 7.72/179.42 lost to a quick-leaving Leal, who beat him with a 7.73/178. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Bob's 7.56/184.04 qualified #4. He beat Joe Lepone in round one, with a 7.61/180.36, and in round two, another 7.61 at 182.18 advanced when Manchester fouled. He again fell to Leal in the semifinals who's holeshot 7.66/181 beat Glidden's quicker 7.62/182.33. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he set track records of 7.53/186.25 in qualifying #1. But again, he only lasted until the semifinals. This time, Allen's 7.66/179 beat Bob's 7.72/183. It had to be frustrating after dominating the season opener and not tasting victory since, but the Gliddens got it figured out after Englishtown. They rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals and showed 'em. A track record 7.94 at 171.10 qualified #1. No one else was in the sevens. An 8.00/166.35 beat Campanello, and in round two, his 7.97/172.08 advanced when Mark Rodenberg fouled. A semifinal 7.96/173.07 took out Allen's 8.03/170, putting Bob into the final against Leal. This was Glidden's show, and in the final, his 7.95/172.74 sent Leal's 8.05/172 packing. This was followed by another victory at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob's 7.61/183.67 qualified #1, and he ran 7.61/184.04 over Rivera, a 7.60/185.18 (track record) over a fouling Leal and 7.57/183.67 in the semifinals to beat Johnson's 7.60/183. He met with Allen in the final, and the two had a close race, with Bob's 7.60-83.29 coming out on top over Bruce's 7.61/180. Glidden had a small hiccup at the Pro Stock Challenge race at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car field of the highest NHRA qualifiers for the last 12 months. Hutchens fouled against him in the first round, and Bob's 7.58/185.03 advanced, but in the semifinals, Glidden fouled away a 7.61/182.85 against eventual winner Allen who won with a 7.59/181. That didn't keep Glidden down as he turned around and won the NHRA US Nationals title the next day. His low qualifying 7.57 (at 185.03) was Low ET. Early 7.53/186.87 national records at Pomona Winters, then reset ET National Record at Maple Grove with a 7.497. |

Notes: Ran first 500ci seven at Winternationals with a 7.86/174.75, low qualifier at 7.84/174.08. Ended the year with the second of four World championships. Won Bristol IHRA Spring Nationals with a 7.890 at 176.81. Dropped two tenths by the end of the year with a 7.655. Number 2 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.775/176.12 (WJ number 1 at 7.762). | Shepherd and the Reher-Morrison team opened their arms to NHRA's 500 cubic inch rule for '82. They had tested their IHRA counterparts in '81 and did well. So, they were looking forward to '82. They started the year at Pomona for the Winternationals, where they qualified #1 with a 7.84/174.08. Lee Shepherd beat Harry Scribner's 8.05/170 in the first round, with a 7.87/174.08. In round two, a 7.86/174.75 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat John Hagen's 8.21/157. In the semifinals, Bob Glidden fouled, and Lee took the win with a 7.84/174.08. In the final, Shepherd ran Frank Iaconio, who was also running 7.8s. Lee slowed to an 8.02/156.52 in the final, giving Iaconio's 7.83/174 the victory. Shepherd more than made up for the loss at the next race, the Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with new NHRA records of 7.77/177.16. He went on to the final by beating Glidden, Dave Hutchens, and Pat Musi with times of 7.86/175.43, 8.10/172.08 (when Dave fouled), and 8.02/174.71. In the final, he met Iaconio again, but this time Lee's 7.88/174.41 beat Frank's 7.89/172 for the win. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, Shepherd qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 7.85/176.81. In round one, a 7.82/174 beat Hutchens, and in the semifinals, a 7.80 (Low ET) at 174 advanced when Warren Johnson fouled. In the final, he ran Glidden's EXP. Bob tried hard, but his 8.02/174 lost to Lee's 7.81/174.41. At the fourth race of the NHRA season, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Lee qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.81. It was another eight-car show, and Shepherd beat Joe Lepone and a fouling Glidden in the semifinals to face Iaconio in the final for the third time in '82. Once again, Lee came out on top with a 7.90/173, beating Frank's 7.93/173. At the Springnationals, a 7.81/175.43 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round and Jim Meyer in round two with a 7.90/173.41. In the semifinals, he left on Iaconio and won with a 7.96/173.41 over Frank's 7.93/172. He faced Glidden in the final, and it was a close race, with Bob's 7.92/170 just nipping the Camaro's 7.93/172.74 for the win. These two would meet in the final of the next race as well, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. They qualified one-two, with Lee's 8.29 getting the pole for the eight-car field. Shepherd beat Gene Fasching and John Brumley to face Glidden in the final. Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.27/164.23 over Glidden's right there 8.30/156. Another win came at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 7.82/175.43. In the semifinals, he stopped Iaconio with a 7.80, and in the final, he reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.74/178.57 to stop Johnson's 7.88/175. Out of the first seven races, Shepherd had now won five of them. He didn't win at Englishtown for the Summernationals, although he again qualified #1 (7.79, Low ET). He beat Pat Musi, a fouling Iaconio, and Bob Ingles in the semifinals with a 7.84. In the final, he ran Johnson in his Olds Starfire. It was a close race, but Lee had to settle for runner-up honors with his 7.91/173.74, finishing second to Warren's 7.90/174. It was WJ and Oldsmobile's first NHRA win. | Low qualifier and winner at PHR event at Martin MI with a best of 7.79/174.41. We need to validate the 179.91 qualifying speed from the Golden Gates. That number is directly from the qualifying sheet but could not have come up on the three-digit clocks of the day. Likely was 178.92? Lee did run 179.28 during eliminations. Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762/179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division 2 race, winning with a holeshot 7.95/166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91/168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87/174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, and an 8.02/171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June, but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84, but a final run of 7.88/175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74/178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91/175.09. A first-round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90/174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91/173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85/173.07 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first-round race, Lee's 7.83/174 beat Johnson's 7.87/173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA Pro Stock tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 7.89/174.75. A first-round 7.93/173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (Low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified #1. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on October 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.660 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA Pro Stock to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69/179.28 beat Lee's 7.74/179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.73, setting Top Speed at 178.92, and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78/176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86/177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in November. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.89/178.57. He was the only pro stocker in the sevens at the event. A first-round 8.03/176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92/177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final, he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84/175.43 (Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.79/175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96/172. |

Notes: Bruce's first time out with the Reher-Morrison team in NHRA competition was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.54 at 182.03. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off to 8.50 in a loss to Frank Iaconio. He was also racing the team's other Camaro on the IHRA circuit and was gaining experience. By the time he got to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he had already won a race in IHRA competition. So at the Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 7.63/178.07 behind Bob Glidden's 7.57/181. He beat Don Campanello in the first round, with a 7.66/175.84, while in round two, a 7.70/180.65 advanced when Gordie Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, Bruce's 7.68/176 stopped Iaconio's 7.74/178 and moved him into his first NHRA National Event final. His opponent was Warren Johnson. Allen had problems and slowed to 9.34 while Johnson got the victory with a 7.68. Allen did not have to wait long before getting his first NHRA victory as it came at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada. He had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.512 at 184.19. Won 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. Bruce qualified second at the 1985 NHRA Springnats in Columbus at 7.63/178.07. He then defeated Don Campanello, Joe Lepone, and Frank Iaconio to reach the finals. He lost to Warren Johnson. - Rick Howard | Won Maple Grove 9/85 on a holeshot over WJ in the final round. |

Notes: Number 3 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.784 and then runner up to Frank Iaconio at Indy, 7.803 to 7.809. #3 qualifier at first 500-inch pro stock race at the Winters, 7.899/174.08. This car was being built by Don Hardy with the intent to run a 351 Cleveland motor. When NHRA switched to the 500 ci rules format, Ford wanted Bob to run the EXP anyway. Glidden had to shove a Boss 429 into the little 92" wheelbase car and hope for the best. He stated after he retired that it was the worst car he ever drove and that it handled like a fuel altered. Even with his limited experience with the 429 (he had tried a small cubic inch Boss motor in testing in '81) he managed to qualify #3 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals with a 7.89/174.08. He stayed in the sevens during eliminations, running a 7.94/172.74 over Don Campanello in the first round, and a 7.95/173.41 over Jim Meyer in round two, but going up against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals, Bob fouled. The Gatornationals showed how far behind the Glidden's were with the little car. His mph readings were great, third highest in qualifying at 174.41. But the car wouldn't ET. His 7.97 qualified #9 in the field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that race, Bob's 8.09/171.75 finished second to Lee's 7.86/175. Things went slightly better in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Glidden's 8.03/174 got past a fouling Frank Iaconio in the first round, and in the semifinal, a 7.89/173 beat Joe Lepone's 8.00/170 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. The EXP was in its first final round appearance, but an 8.02/174.41 performance gave Bob a runner-up finish to Shepherd's 7.81/174. A 7.90 qualified #3 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round, but facing Shepherd in the semifinal Bob fouled out. Somehow the car got down the track straight in four runs to win the NHRA Springnationals. This was Bob's only NHRA win of '82. He qualified #2 with a 7.82/175.43. He had a little luck in the semifinals when Warren Johnson fouled away a 7.96 to Glidden's 8.01. But in the final, he met Shepherd again. This time Bob outran the Texas Camaro with a 7.92/170.77 to Lee's 7.93/172. He got another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. An 8.31 qualified #2 and in the first round, an 8.35/162.45 beat Bubba Corzine. In the semifinals, he beat Don Coonce, but his final round 8.30/156.79 lost to Lee's 8.27/164. Glidden made it as far as the semifinals at the NHRA Grandnationals. There he lost a 7.84 to 7.85 decision to WJ. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.83/177.86 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He ran a 7.94 in the first round, over Mannarino, but an off pace 8.10/154 lost in round two to Lepone. In August, he was at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran a 7.83/172.74 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 7.85/173.41 beat Lepone's 7.99/169. But in the semifinals, once again his nemesis Shepherd downed him with a 7.85/174 over Bob's 7.94/173.07. He got his first pole of the year at the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals. Bob ran 7.87 (Low ET) at 174.75 to get the spot. Unfortunately, in the first round, both he and Iaconio ran 7.92 with Frank getting the win at 168 mph over Glidden's hard-charging 174.08. At Indy for the US Nationals, the EXP dipped into the 7.7's for the first time, qualifying #3 with a 7.78. Bob made it into yet another final (his fourth of the year), but this time it wasn't against Shepherd. Iaconio had taken Lee out in the semifinal, so it was Frank facing off against Bob this time. Both ran 7.80's in the final, with the EXP hitting 175.78 to the Camaro's 173. But Iaconio got the win and Bob had to settle for another runner-up spot. Bob qualified third in the eight-car field at Fremont with a best-ever 7.680 at 178.92 for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 3. He beat Lepone's 7.85/172 in the first round, with a 7.70/178.21. In the semifinals, he lost to Shepherd. |

Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70. |

Notes: This was a great season for Glidden. He started the year by running 7.425/186.76 to qualify first at Pomona (he qualified #1 at all the NHRA races in '87). He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.65/180.43 before losing to Butch Leal's 7.52/183 in the second round with a quicker but later 7.45/186.60. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.41/186.21 got him the #1 spot in the field. He beat a fouling Steve Schmidt in the first round with a 7.40/187.96, and in round two, his 7.44/187 beat Jerry Eckman. Bob set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.39/187.96 while beating Darrell Alderman, but after the run, he found a cracked cylinder head. The team pulled engines and installed a new one for the final against Leal. Unfortunately, Bob fouled in the final, handing Butch the victory. The next event was the NHRA Winston All-Star race at the Texas Motorplex. The non-points race featured only eight-car Pro fields. Of course, Glidden qualified #1 with a track record 7.318 at 189.55. Bob beat Leal's 7.40/186 with a 7.33/189.67 (Top Speed) in the first round, but in round two, both he and Joe Lepone Jr. ran 7.46 (Glidden at 187.85), with Lepone getting the win light. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.38/187.96 got him his customary #1 spot in qualifying. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 7.37/188.36 while beating Don Coonce in round one, and a 7.43/187 beat Warren Johnson in round two. Another 7.43/187.26 beat Bruce Allen's 7.53/185 in the semifinals. This put Bob in the final against Leal again. Glidden was not to be denied his 53 career NHRA victory, and his final round 7.42/187.46 assured him the win over Leal's 7.49/185. The fourth NHRA race of the season was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge in May. The #1 qualifying spot was taken by a 7.51/189.99 (Top Speed). He set Low ET and a track record 7.45 at 186.64 in the first round while taking out Tony Christian. His 7.52/185.75 beat a tire-shaking WJ in the second round, but a semifinal 7.58/189.91 lost to Leal's 7.52/184. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, setting both ends of the track record with 7.49/186.33 times to get the spot. An opening round 7.50/184.91 defeated Don Campanello's 7.69/182. In round two, his 7.52/185.10 took out Stan Mizell's 7.65/181, and another 7.50/185.41 beat Allen's 7.65/182. He faced #2 qualifier Leal in the final, and Glidden racked up his 54th victory with a 7.50/185.29, beating Leal's 7.63/180. It was interesting to note that while he was obviously doing great in the NHRA competition, he was also running every other weekend in IHRA and regularly winning there, too. The NHRA Grandnationals didn't go so well. He qualified #1 at 7.51/186.41 (Low ET and Top Speed). In the first round of competition, his 7.61/184.76 lost to Nick Nikolis' 7.60/181. At the NHRA Sumernationals, Bob's track record 7.42 at 186.33 earned him the pole. That made it a full year since anyone but Glidden qualified #1 in NHRA Pro Stock. The last time anyone else qualified #1 was at the NHRA Grandnationals in '86. In the opening round, he ran 7.50/184.95 to take out Leal's 7.57/182, but in round two, a quick-leaving 7.67/181 by Jerry Haas beat his 7.60/184.76. Reher and Morrison debuted a new Beretta for driver Bruce Allen at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an effort to stop Glidden's domination. Bob still got his 16th straight #1 qualifying spot with a 7.88/175.47 (Top Speed), but Allen's new car qualified #2. These two would meet in the final. Bob started his drive by running 7.93/174.01 over Nikolis. A round two 7.93/173.41 stopped Kenny Delco, and in the semifinal, his 7.92/173.34 beat Leal, who fouled. The Chevy vs. Ford final was great, and Bob pulled off career victory number 55 with a 7.87 (Low ET) at 171.55 in beating Allen's 7.99/173. Brainerd was the next event on the NHRA schedule for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bob got his customary #1 spot with a 7.49/184.99 in qualifying. Once again, Allen was #2 but half a tenth back at 7.55. These two would once again battle it out. Bob beat Leal in the opening round. Then he ran 7.47/185.45 in round two over Darrell Alderman. The car went into heavy tire shake in the semifinal, but Bob drove out of it, and his 7.58/184.31 narrowly beat Warren Johnson's similar 7.58/182. So, facing Allen in the final, Bruce got lane choice due to his 7.57 semifinal win. The two had a great race that saw Allen's 7.53/183 win over Bob's 7.58/181.34. At Indy, there was a race within the race as NHRA ran the Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge. This race only allowed the top eight qualifiers over the last 12 months to complete. Glidden was the #1 seed coming into this event. His 7.43/190.59 beat WJ's 7.54/187 in round one. He almost duplicated those times in the semifinal, with his 7.43/190.39 taking out Leal's 7.55/184. Once again, he faced the Beretta of Allen in the final. Bob won the event with a final 7.54/188.16 over Bruce's 7.64/184. Photo from Indy 1987. He Ran 7.318 best time at the Ennis All-Stars race, but records were not set at that race. Bob then set the national speed record at Indy 191.32, then the ET record twice: Chief Nats (7.354, 7.352). Bob ran 7.519/186.41 at NHRA Baton Rouge Cajun Nats 1987. |

Notes: Ran 7.601/183.67 at Pomona Winters 2/86. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | WJ started his season by finishing runner-up to Frank Iaconio at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 for the show with a 7.60/183.67 then got by Bob Glidden's 7.55/176 in the opening round with a 7.53/184.04. Another 7.53 at 183.87 beat Bruce Allen's 7.64/179 in round two and a 7.58/184.42 in the semifinals took out Nick Nikolis' 7.62/181. This put him into the final against Iaconio's T-Bird. Warren was definitely the favorite as Frank was stuck in the 7.6's during eliminations. But in the final, Frank improved to 7.56/185 to win over Johnson's 7.77/181.45. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he faced Glidden again in the first round, as he had only qualified #9 with a 7.61/185.26 while Glidden had taken the pole with a track record 7.49. This time WJ fouled and his 7.79/183.29 lost to Bob's 7.51/183. Atlanta was NHRA's next stop for the Southern Nationals. Warren set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.53/184.80. Bob was right behind at 7.54/183. It seemed that these two would meet in the final and it should have worked out that was as Warren's 7.57/184 beat Allen in the semifinals, but Glidden crashed in his semifinal race while beating Butch Leal. So, in the final WJ soloed for the victory with a 16.91/51.32. He cleaned house at Baton Rouge as well for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.51/186.45 set both ends of the track record in qualifying #1, and he then ran 7.68/182.11 over Ken Dondero's 7.71/181. A round two 7.63/183.78 beat Allen's quicker 7.61/176 and in the semifinals a 7.60/180.90 aced out Joe Lepone's 7.62/178. This put him into the final against Leal. Butch pushed the tree to hard and fouled while Warren got another win with a 7.74/172.81. He almost got three in a row at the NHRA Springnationals. Warren's 7.52 (at 184.16) in qualifying #1 was a new National Trail track record. He then ran 7.60/182.22, 7.64/182.77, and 7.61/183.11 while beating Gordie Rivera, Allen, and Lepone (in that order) to reach the final. Johnson faced Leal for the title and WJ fouled away a 7.65 while Butch's 7.61 got him the win. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and WJ qualified #1 with a 7.53/185.18 (Low ET and Top Speed). He beat Dondero in the first round, but was upset by Joe Clark in the semifinals when his 7.77/182.55 lost to Clark's 7.76/177.51. Low ET and Top Speed was his at the NHRA Grandnationals where his 7.51/185.18 in qualifying got him the marks. But in the first round, he slept on the line and his 7.54/185.03 lost to Rivera's 7.62/179. Another win followed that where he won the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There he qualified #2 with a 7.45/186.33 behind Glidden's 7.44/186. Warren held a lead in the NHRA points standings, but Glidden had recovered from his Atlanta crash and was now a threat. Both drivers made it into the semifinals where WJ's 7.45 beat Leal while Don Coonce upset Glidden. The final saw Johnson run 7.55/184.80 for the victory over Coonce's 7.63/180. Unfortunately, that was the last win for WJ in '86 as Glidden won all the remaining races except one. Warren still ran well, but Bob had the edge at this point. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, they qualified one, two with Bob's 7.84/175 getting the pole over WJ's 7.89/175.88 (Top Speed). Of course, the two worked their way to the final with Johnson running 8.00/174.01 over Jerry Eckman, 7.98/173.84 over Lepone in round two, and a semifinal 7.98/174.18 took out Allen's 8.02/171. In the final, his 8.03/173.41 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.92/174. He lost in the first round, at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. There he qualified #3 with 7.66/181.81, but a first-round 7.76 lost to Stan Mizell's 7.72. Next stop was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Warren became the first 190 mph NHRA Pro Stock when he ran 7.50/190.07 to qualify #4. The speed was backed up for a new NHRA record. As good as his speed was, his ET was off as Glidden ran 7.37/189 to qualify first. Warren's 7.48/189.27 in the first round, beat Sam Gianino, but an off-pace 7.85/184.76 lost to Mark Pawuk's 7.64/180 in round two. It was then back to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. His 7.45/186.79 qualified #2 behind the T-Bird from Indiana that ran 7.41/187. But in the first round, Don Campanello's holeshot 7.58/180 beat WJ's 7.57/186.14. NHRA's next stop was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. Warren's 7.51/185.79 took his customary #2 spot behind Glidden's 7.45/185. In the opening round, Mizell fouled against him and Johnson advanced with a 7.62/184.61. In the second round, Don Beverley fouled and Johnson's 7.55/184.53 moved on. He drilled Lepone in the semifinals where his 7.66/183.26 beat Joe's quicker 7.58/181. This put him into the final against Glidden. Bob had the performance advantage and Warren took a chance on the tree and fouled away a 7.56/183 while Glidden picked up his 50th NHRA trophy. Warren watched as his points lead over Glidden dwindled. |

Notes: The 7.62 at 176.47 was a questionable run but has never been disproved. Lee Shepherd came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition. - NHRA | Whisnant also ran a 7.71 early in the season but was mired in the 7.80s for most of 1983. | Reid Whisnant had the lone Mopar to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.88 qualified #8, and in the opening round, he beat Harry Scribner. In round two, his 7.95/177.16 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.01/172, but a semifinal 8.05 lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio's 7.83. It was a good showing for the Mopar, and he continued to run well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Reid qualified #2 with a 7.71/178.57 behind Lee Shepherd's 7.67/181. He beat Mark Yuill in round one before losing to Rickie Smith in round two, where both drivers ran 7.75. Whisnant then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7, but an 8.02 in the first round, lost to Mickey Stephens' 7.94. He was the only non-GM car to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio. The Camaro got out of shape, and Reid advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Joe Lepone. The Mopar driver continued to impress when he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. The Rock had 26 cars attempting to qualify, and his 7.80 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early. |

Notes: Frank joined a Kenny Bernstein-led Budweiser super team. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | Frank was known for running Chevys since the late '60s. He had done very well with the bow-ties, finishing second in NHRA Pro Stock standings for three years. He had won 10 NHRA national events and 19 runners-up. So, it was very strange to see him in a Ford for '85. Kenny Bernstein first approached Iaconio at the '84 Cajun Nationals about joining his Budweiser-Motorcraft Ford team for '85. Arlen Fadely had also approached Frank to run an Olds for the '85 season. Near the end of '84, Frank decided to join the Ford team. He had run Don Ness cars for several years, so of course, Ness was contracted to build the T-Bird. It was Ness' first Pro Stock Ford. The car failed tech inspection at its debut at Pomona for the Winternationals. Don Ness fixed the roll cage issue on the spot, but Frank's 7.78 best (third alternate) missed the show when qualifying ended. Things went much better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.70/182.11. In the first round, Sam Gianino fouled against him. In round two, his 7.71/183.00 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.55/184. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, he again qualified #5 with a 7.75/179.06. He faced a poorly qualified (#13) Glidden in the first round. Iaconio had problems and shut off to a 12.31 that lost to Bob's 7.93. Glidden got Frank again at the next event, the Cajun Nationals. It took Iaconio four attempts to qualify. He shut down in the first three passes, but a 7.73/179.28 on the fourth pass qualified #9. In the first round, he ran 7.75/175.09 to beat low qualifier Bruce Allen in Reher-Morrison Camaro, who shut off to 8.50. In round two, his 7.78/178.92 advanced when Gordie Rivera got out of shape and shut off to 8.17/135. The semifinals saw his 7.73/179.06 fall to Glidden's 7.68/182. Frank got another semifinal finish at the next race, the Springnationals. A 7.66/180.94 qualified #4, and a first-round 7.73/179.49 beat Ron Manchester. A 7.74/178.92 in round two beat Jerry Eckman and advanced him into the semis to meet Allen. Allen's 7.68/176 beat his 7.74/178.42. The next stop on the NHRA trail was in Canada for the Grandnationals. Frank qualified #3 with a strong 7.55/183.89. An off-pace 7.71/171.36 in the first round, lost to Don Campanello's 7.68/180. At the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #5 at 7.62/184.65, but fouled against Frank Sanchez in the first round. Budds Creek held its annual Pro Stock Open race, and Frank lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Roy Hill. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Frank's 8.08/170.13 qualified #6, and in the opening round, his 8.09/170.77 beat Hill's 8.24/168. He ran his best time of the weekend, an 8.05/171.10, in round two, but it wasn't enough to get past Warren Johnson's 8.01/172. NHRA's next race was the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. Frank qualified #10 with a 7.76/179.28. He improved to 7.68/180.72 in the first round, but lost to Allen's Low ET charge of 7.55/181. Iaconio had racked up enough points over the past 12 months to qualify for one of the eight spots available for the NHRA Pro Stock Challenge race held at Indianapolis in conjunction with the US Nationals. In the Challenge race, he lost to Butch Leal's 7.68/180 with a 7.72/182.26. He did pretty well at the US Nats. There, 45 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 7.69/182.26 qualified #8. Ken Dondero fouled against him in round one, and Frank's 7.75/179.49 advanced. In round two, he fell to a holeshot by Tony Christian. Tony's 7.76/177 beat his quicker 7.72/179.76. He was closer to home when NHRA stopped at Maple Grove on September 15 for the Keystone Nationals. Frank's 7.59/181.08 qualified #6, and a 7.64/179.49 got around Rivera's broken Camaro. In round two, his 7.68/180.07 lost to Johnson's 7.58/182. Best NHRA national event times were 7.556 at Sanair and 184.65 at Englishtown. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Darrell's first NHRA national event of '86 was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.57/182.37. A first-round 7.61/181.19 beat Tony Christian's 7.68/181. In the second round, the Camaro broke, giving Bob Glidden a solo into the semifinals. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals, and once again, Alderman qualified well, running a 7.62/181.21 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Lee Dean's 7.70/175 in the first round, with a 7.65/179.96. In round two, another 7.65 at 180.25 beat Warren Johnson's 7.87/180. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.63 in the semifinals against Dempsey Hardy. At the season ending NHRA World Finals, a 7.57/182.00 qualified #7. He beat Frank Iaconio's T-Bird in the first round, with a 7.60/180.83. In round two, Bruce Allen sent him packing with a 7.56/183 that nosed out Darrell's 7.58/180. Those were the only three NHRA races that Alderman ran in '86. Even with those limited runs, he managed to finish 22 in NHRA's points chase. Darrell ran all kinds of 7.40's on the IHRA circuit this year in the Jerry Haas Camaro, but none in NHRA trim. |

Notes: Levi Garrett chewing tobacco sponsorship. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Allen qualified second at the US Nationals with a 7.46/186.33 and lasted until the final only to lose a 7.50/188.63 to 7.70/161.84 decision to Bob Glidden. Allen started the season by qualifying fourth at the NHRA Winternats with a 7.58/181.08. A first-round 7.59/180.36 beat Gordie Rivera, but a second round 7.64/179.64 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.53/183. He then raced at the Gatornationals where a 7.65/183.52 beat Joe Clark and a 7.69/178.34 beat Bob Glidden moving him into the semis where a quicker 7.52/179.49 lost to Butch Leal's 7.54/183. It was on to the Southern Nats where a 7.55/181.24 qualified third. He made it into the semis before losing to Johnson. At the Cajun Nats in June, a 7.59/181.67 qualified fifth, but WJ seemed to have Allen's number. The two met in the second round and despite a quicker 7.61/176.22 he lost to WJ's 7.63/183. At the Spring Nats he again qualified fifth with a 7.59/178.11. He beat Lee Dean in the first round, with a 7.65/175.40 before falling in the second round to WJ again. This time Allen's 7.68/176.53 lost to WJ's 7.64/182.77. |

Notes: Warren started his '93 season on the right foot as he won the NHRA Winternationals. Not only did he win, but he also qualified #1 with a 7.16/194.04 (Top Speed). He also watched his son Kurt race in his first NHRA race and make it into the semifinals. Warren set Low ET in the first round with a 7.14 at 193.46 to beat Vince Khoury's 7.29/191. A 7.15/193.88 beat Bruce Allen's 7.24/191 in round two, and in the semifinals, his 7.18/192.84 beat Ray Frank's 7.26/189. In the final, he faced the Dodge of Scott Geoffrion. On this day, there was no catching WJ as his 7.24/192.02 beat the Dodge's 7.35/187. He qualified #1 at Arizona as well with a 7.21/192.30 for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. He then ran the race's best times in the first round, with a 7.15/193.05 over Franks' 7.32/189. He was late off the line in round two, and his 7.22/192.14 lost to Allen's 7.24/190. Johnson almost broke into the sixes at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with a 7.02/195.05 in qualifying #1. He beat Khoury's 7.25/191 in the first round, with a 7.11/194.09, but he fell to a Rickie Smith holeshot in round two that saw his 7.11/194.25 lose to Smith's 7.17/191. Warren found his way back into the winner's circle at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time at 7.06 (Low ET) at a national record 196.24 got him the spot. He beat a fouling Paul Rebeschi in the first round, with a 7.12/193.84, and in round two, his 7.14/192.47 took out Khoury's 7.22/191. In the semifinals, Mark Pawuk fouled against him, and Johnson advanced with a 7.13/193.59. He faced Larry Morgan in the final, and Larry got out of shape and slowed to 8.13/130 while Warren won his 46 NHRA National Event with a 7.14/193.17. He didn't have long to wait before he won again. The win came at the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham. Johnson set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 7.09/195.05. He set a new track speed record in the first round, where his 7.10/196.20 beat Rebeschi. A second-round 7.12/195.65 beat Jerry Eckman and a 7.11/195.35 beat his son, Kurt's 7.15/193 in the semifinals. In the final, he met his nemesis, Bob Glidden, and WJ got the victory with a 7.12/195.39 over Glidden's 7.24/192.Rick Howard photo from 1993 NHRA Oldsmobile SpringNats, Columbus. Qualified No. 1 at 7.16/193.54 - Low ET and Top Speed - and ran the table by beating Todd Tutterow, Ray Franks, Lewis Worden and won the event when his son Kurt fouled in the final (photo). |

Notes: Dave did not race at the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals where he qualified #4 with a 7.70/179.92. He lost to Frank Sicinski in the first round. He again qualified #4 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.71/178.85. In the first round both he and John Brumley ran 7.86 (Dave at 176.81), but Hutchens got the win light. In the second round Gordie Rivera fouled away a 7.78 and Dave advanced with a 7.87/176.26. In the semifinals, he came up against the "known leaver," Butch Leal and Dave pushed the 'tree too hard and fouled away a 7.78 while eventual winner Leal advanced with a 7.87. NHRA's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. Hutchens ran 7.67/182.11 to qualify #6, but he fouled away a 7.73 in the first round, against Jerry Eckman who advanced with a 7.81. At the NHRA Springnationals, 34 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Dave qualified #6 with a 7.69/179.49. Once again he drew a red light in the first round, throwing away a 7.76 while his opponent, Joe Lepone advanced with a 7.84. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he qualified #5 with a 7.59/182.11. A first-round 7.69/179.49 beat Nick Nikolis, but in the second round his 7.70/179.49 lost to eventual winner Bruce Allen's 7.58/183. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown with a 7.66/180, but he lost early. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals he qualified #5 with an 8.07/173.75, but he fouled away an 8.14 in the first round. |

Notes: Glidden had a rough couple of years, but he started to get the handle on his Boss 429 engines in '84. The season started slowly, but he really picked up as the year went on. It began at Pomona, where he qualified #4 with a 7.72. He beat Johnny Dowey in the first round, and in round two, his 7.82 beat Joe Lepone's 7.85. Unfortunately, he fouled against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 behind Shepherd with a 7.66/181.45. He faced Roy Hill in an all-Ford first-round matchup, and Hill won with a 7.87 over Bob's late 7.81/175.43. In April, he had another semifinal finish at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.81/177.86. He got lucky in the first round, when his ailing 8.04 advanced over Gordie Rivera's off pace 8.90. In the second round, he picked up to 7.74/178.92 to beat Lepone's 7.85/176. But once again, it was Shepherd who stopped Glidden in the semis with a 7.83 to Bob's shut off 13.14/57.35. It was the same story at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals; Glidden made it to the semifinals, where he fouled against Shepherd but ran his best speed of the year at 182.92. Bob qualified #5 with a 7.72/182.18. The T-Bird continued to show strength by qualifying #1 at the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan, with a track record 7.68 at 180. It was an eight-car show, and Bob reached the finals by getting past a fouling Don Campanello and then Andy Mannarino in the semifinals with a 7.83. In the final, he came up against #2 qualifier Frank Iaconio. Frank got the jump off the line, and his 7.72/178 held off Glidden's quicker and faster 7.68/179.28 for the win. Bob was going into the NHRA Springnationals in June as the favorite. After all, he had won the event for the past five years, back to '79. He looked good in qualifying, running 7.71 for the #2 spot, but he only lasted until round two, where he fouled against Gene Fasching. He made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals in Canada on July 1. He qualified #4 with a 7.70/180.72 and, in the semifinals, got a measure of satisfaction by beating Shepherd's 7.75 with a holeshot and a 7.78. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. It was a good, close race, with Johnson's 7.68/182 nipping Bob's 7.69/180.72. Glidden didn't have to wait long to get his first victory of the year. It came at Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals. Bob set a 7.67 track record at 180.00 to qualify first. He beat Jerry Eckman, Don Nicholson, and a surprising Sam Carroll in the semifinals with a 7.71. He faced his nemesis, Shepherd, in the final. Bob easily drove away from the Texas Camaro with a 7.71/178.21, beating Lee's 7.77/177. The Glidden team was still feeling pretty good when they rolled into Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where WJ's 8.06/171 beat his 8.13/169.81. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.70/180.00. But once again, WJ stopped him in the semifinals. If any other car got stronger as the year went on, it had to be Warren Johnson's Olds. These two fought it out at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Bob won the qualifying battle, running 7.64/180.72 for the #1 spot just ahead of WJ's 7.66. Both worked their way to the final, Glidden with a 7.66 over Mannarino, a 7.71 over Iaconio, and a 7.72 in the semifinals over Ken Dondero's 7.82. WJ had about a tenth over Glidden in eliminations, running 7.63, 7.64, and 7.63. So, it looked like WJ would get an easy win in the final. It wasn't so easy, as somewhere along the line, Bob was able to pick up to a 7.65/180.36 that narrowly lost to WJ's 7.63/181. It was a close race. At the NHRA World Finals, it was apparent to all that Bob hadn't just caught up with his 429 program; he was now ahead of everyone else. He got the pole with a 7.64/181.81 (Top Speed) and then ran 7.6s regularly. An opening round 7.66/180.72 beat Gene Fasching while a 7.68/180.36 in round two beat Rickie Smith. He stopped Shepherd's ailing Camaro in the semifinals with a 7.64/181.45. In the final, he ran Butch Leal. A final round 7.615 (Low ET) at 181.81 got the victory over Leal's 7.81/162. It was a dominating performance. |

Notes: Reid entered the 1984 NHRA season with a lot to prove after his amazing 7.620 at the World Finals in 1983. He started inauspiciously with a 7.918/175.09 first alternate shot at the Winternationals. However, he did get into the show and lost to Warren Johnson in the first round, 7.884/178.21 to 7.886/176.12. Reid then brought out a brand new Don Hardy Daytona at Gainesville. He was first alternate DNQ at 7.844/176.81 but got into the show and – like the World Finals a few months earlier – ran an out-of-this-world 7.615/174.41 to defeat Ken Dondero’s 7.814/175.78 in round one. Amazingly, a two-tenths Dondero holeshot (.450 to .646) almost stole the race. The margin of victory was .003 seconds! This run only added to the mystery and suspicion about Whisnant’s combination, especially after Don Coonce defeated him in round two, 7.78/179 to a ‘normal’ 7.893/175.09 from Reid. Whisnant followed this with DNQ efforts in Atlanta (7.943/174.75) and Columbus (7.940/176.12). He qualified #15 at Sanair at 7.839/178.57 and lost in round one, to Frank Iaconio, 7.76/180 to 7.956/176.47. Reid was a third alternate DNQ at Englishtown at 7.854/175.78 and also DNQ’d at Indy at 7.881/176.47. He qualified #14 at the World Finals at 7.814/176.47. He got a legit win over Andy Mannarino in round one, 7.890/175.78 to 8.015/176.12, but lost to Butch Leal in round two, 7.765/178.92 to 7.867- 176.47. Reid was a hard-running campaigner who often qualified and ran well. But his ability to drop two tenths from his normal times in 1983/1984 will have pro stock fans forever questioning those low 7.6 second runs. |

Notes: On April 21, 1985, Butch Leal became the first racer other than Bob Glidden, Warren Johnson, Lee Shepherd, or Frank Iaconio to win an NHRA Pro Stock national event since 1979. Leal's Castrol GTX Nationwise Pontiac Trans Am beat Glidden's 7/11 Chief Auto Parts Ford Thunderbird in the final round of the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, GA, 7.73/179.71 to 7.80/167.72. This was the first Pro Stock win for Pontiac in NHRA history. Runner-up to Bruce Allen at 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. | Butch had a very successful season in '85. He started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #6 with a 7.67/179.35. Leal improved to a 7.63/180.65 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson, while in round two, a 7.69/178.71 beat Lee Shepherd's quicker 7.66/179. He pushed the tree a little too hard in the semifinals and fouled away a 7.72/180.07 in a loss to Warren Johnson's 7.73/179. He qualified #3 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.64/180.36. A 7.63/178.07 beat Rickie Smith in round one, but he lost to Dempsey Hardy in round two. Then came the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. As mentioned above, he got Pontiac its first win in the Pro Stock category. He qualified #2 with a 7.67/181.45 (Top Speed) and then beat Smith, Ken Dondero, and Dave Hutchens. All fouled against him. He then met Glidden in the final to take his first NHRA Pro Stock title since 1973. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Leal's 7.63/185.10 (Top Speed) qualified #4 in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tony Christian in the first round. It was then on to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Leal qualified #5 with a 7.67/180.94. He beat Hardy in the first round, with a 7.75/178.35 and then got a good light that saw his 7.73/178.92 take out low qualifier Glidden's 7.72/179. This put him into the semifinals, where his 7.74/178.42 lost to johnson's 7.66/180. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.60/183.00. In the opening round, Leal's 7.66/181.81 took out Sam Gianino's 7.80/175. Another 7.66 at 181.30 in round two beat Gordie Rivera's 7.76/179, and yet a third 7.66/181.81 beat Glidden's quicker and faster 7.62/182 in the semifinals. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bruce Allen. Butch improved to 7.62/182.70 in their race, but he finished runner-up to Allen's 7.55/183. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Once again, he qualified #6, this time with a 7.62/180. He beat Gianino and Johnson in the first two rounds, and in the semifinal, Rivera broke on the line, and Leal's 7.69/178 advanced. It was a rematch of the Grandnats final with Allen that had the same results. Allen's 7.61/180 got the victory over Butch's 7.70/180.28. At the end of July, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.02/171.75 qualified #4 and an 8.10/171.10 in the first round, beat Pete Smith. Dempsey Hardy fouled against him in round two, and Butch ran 8.04/171.75 to advance. He showed his driving skills in the semifinals, where he beat Johnson's 7.99/172 with his best run of the weekend, an 8.01/172.74. Leal was in another final round, but this time he faced the Ford of low qualifier Glidden. Bob had been running mid 7.9s all day, so Leal needed to get the jump. But it didn't happen; his 8.05/172.74 lost to Glidden's 7.95/172. It was Butch's third straight runner-up finish. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Leal's 7.71/182.18 qualified #5. An opening round 7.64/182.55 beat Gianino's 7.83/174, but he fouled away a 7.76 in round two against Glidden. He had to take the chance as Bob ran 7.60. |

Notes: The Reher-Morrison team started the season with Shepherd qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.68/179.64. Lee beat Roy Hill in the first round, while in round two, his 7.78 beat Don Coonce's 7.89. Another 7.78 advanced in the semifinals when Bob Glidden fouled against him. That set up a final-round meeting with Frank Iaconio. These two met in the Winternationals final in '82, with Iaconio winning. This time it was Shepherd's turn as his 7.71/178.57 got the victory over Frank's 7.76/174. The competition was hot at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Forty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Lee led them all with a new NHRA national record of 7.62 at 181.08. He slowed down a tenth in the first round, with a 7.72/179.28, but Lee didn't need it as Joe Lepone fouled. But in round two, Iaconio ran 7.71/176 to beat Lee's 7.77/179.99. The next race was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Lee only qualified #5 with a 7.78/177.86, but he beat Sam Carroll, Warren Johnson, and Glidden to reach the final. There he used a holeshot 7.78/177.86 to get the victory over a strong running Don Campanello, who runner-upped with a 7.74/179. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. There Lee would win his third title in four starts. He qualified #3 with a 7.68/182.18. He made his way into the final by getting by a fouling Glidden in the semifinals with a 7.81/176. In the final, Butch Leal also pulled a red light, and Shepherd ran 7.75/181.08 for the win. Still, another win came at the next race, the NHRA Springnationals, in June. A 7.76 qualified #3, and a 7.75/176 got him into the final when Gordie Rivera "bulbed" against him in the semifinal. This time Brad Yuill was Lee's final round victim, and a 7.75/178.57 did him in. This was Shepherd's last victory in NHRA competition. Lee failed to reach the final at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.68/180.72, but in the semifinals, Glidden gated him, and his 7.78 beat Shepherd's quicker 7.75. Glidden got him again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Lee only qualified #6 with a 7.72. He beat Charlie Garrett in round one and WJ in round two. In the semifinals, his 7.80 beat Lepone's 7.87. This put him into the final with Bob. Glidden had the edge as he had run 7.71 in his semifinal heat. Sure enough, Glidden ran another 7.71/178 to beat the Camaro's 7.77/177.51. Lee reached the final in the next event as well, the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 and advanced into the final against Warren Johnson. WJ had set a track record in qualifying #1, and once again, Lee had to settle for the runner-up spot. His 8.14/166.97 was no match for the Oldsmobile driver's 8.07/171. These two would continue to run strong at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Glidden stole the thunder in qualifying by qualifying #1, but Shepherd was #2 with a 7.75/178.92 while WJ was #3. The semifinals saw Lee beat Iaconio while WJ took out Glidden. It was a close final, with WJ getting the victory with a 7.75/180 over Lee's 7.76/177.16. Things didn't go too well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A 7.71/178.21 qualified #4, and they picked up to a 7.66/178.21 in the first round to beat Sam Gianino, but in round two, a slipping clutch slowed the car to an 8.85 loss to Rivera. WJ went on to win his third NHRA event in a row and close the points gap. Going into the NHRA World Finals, the NHRA Pro Stock Championship was up for grabs between these two. Lee qualified #3 at 7.69/178.21, while WJ wasn't far behind in the #5 spot. But the big points race ended quickly when WJ was upset by Rickie Smith in the first round. Lee ran 7.71/178.57 to beat Lepone, and the NHRA title was his for the fourth year in a row. A round two 7.72/175.43 beat Rivera, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut down to an 8.04/130.81 that lost to eventual winner Glidden. It was interesting to note that not in one NHRA event in '84 did Lee set Low ET or Top Speed. Quite a difference from previous years. This also said a lot about Shepherd as a driver. Even at Gainesville with the 7.62 NHRA record, Reid Whisnant had gotten Low ET with a controversial 7.61. The team was dominating the IHRA side of things as well, with all kinds of records there. |

Notes: Frank came close to winning the 1983 NHRA Pro Stock championship but lost to a controversial run at the World Finals. After qualifying number one at 7.650, the points leader was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition, after running 7.80s all year. | Frank won the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 7.83. A 7.80/175.43 beat Mark Yuill in the first round, while a 7.79 (Low ET and a new track record) at 175.43 beat Rickie Smith's 7.96/173. He slowed to a 7.83 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Whisnant's 8.05. He ran low qualifier Bob Glidden in his new T-Bird in the final. Iaconio won with a 7.81/175.78 over Glidden's off pace 7.99/174. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.71/180.00. Once again, he worked his way to the final by first beating Bubba Corzine with a 7.69 and then Don Campanello with an even better 7.67. He stayed tough in the semifinals, beating Smith with a 7.68. That set up a final-round meeting with Lee Shepherd's low qualifying Camaro. Lee had run as well as 7.64 during eliminations, and that might have been on Frankie's mind in the final, as he bulbed with a 7.75/180.36 while Lee scored the victory with a 7.68/180. In April, Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals, and Frank headed the Pro Stock show with a 7.80/178.92 (Low ET and Top Speed). He got out of shape and lost to Whisnant in round two. On May 1, Maple Grove held its US Manufacturer's Pro Stock Championships. Iaconio set the meet's Low ET at a new track record 7.80, and he also had Top Speed at 178.51. Unfortunately, in round two, he got out of shape and shut off to an 8.08/159.57 that lost to Bob Ingle's 7.97/171. He had another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson before losing to Lee in the final. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals in mid-June. Frank qualified #3 with a 7.79/177.16. Again, he worked his way to the final by running 7.85, 7.84, and 7.83 over Sam Gianino, Joe Lepone Jr., and Don Coonce in that order before meeting Glidden in the final. It was a rematch of the Winternationals final, only this time Bob's 7.79/178 prevailed over Iaconio's 7.83/174.08. Another runner-up finish came in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #2 behind Glidden and worked his way to the final, fouling against Shepherd. Frank always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals, and '83 was no exception. He set a new track record 7.73 while qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 178.92. In the first round, he beat Lepone's 7.89/175 with a 7.76/178.21. In the second round, he ran identical times to beat Johnson's Cutlass at 7.78/178. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.80/177.51, but it easily covered Butch Leal's 8.02. It was Frank against Lee in the final, and this time Shepherd must have felt that Iaconio had the upper hand as he fouled away a 7.78 while Frank motored to a 7.85/177.16 for the win. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET while qualifying #1 for the eight-car show with a 7.65 at 180.72. He made his way to the final, where he faced #2 qualifier Johnson. Warren knew Frank was tough, so he pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled. Iaconio won with a 7.72/183.29 (Top Speed). He found himself in another final round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd's 7.74 with a 7.76/178.57. A 7.84 in round one beat Roy Hill's Capri. In round two, his 7.87/176 dropped Don Campanello, while a holeshot 7.88/175 beat a quicker WJ at 7.83. But in the final, it was Frank who lost to a holeshot by Glidden. Bob's 7.87/176 beat Frank's quicker 7.85/176.81. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the US Nationals at Indy. Iaconio ran 7.75/178.57 to qualify third behind Glidden and Shepherd. In the opening round, he improved to 7.74/181.81 to defeat Andy Mannarino's 7.92/176. He stopped Smith's 7.81/176 in round two with a 7.77/177.86 before losing a tight battle with Glidden in the semifinal that saw both drivers run 7.74 (Iaconio at 177). Frank's best NHRA national event numbers came at Fremont at 7.650/182.18. He then duplicated the 7.650 at the World Finals. |

Notes: Had an automatic shifter. Came out of nowhere to win Maple Grove using a unique automatic transmission. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Don attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 7.71/178.57 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.63/181.08 qualified #12. A 7.74/179.79 in the first round, lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.55/181. Beverly qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.63/180.57. The #9 spot was dreaded because you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Warren Johnson qualified #1, and sure enough, he beat Don in the first round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Beverly qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/179.74. He slowed to an 8.04/144.88 in the first round, that lost to Don Coonce's 7.79/176. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he 7.73/180.25 best was the third alternate for the show. Things were much better at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 7.64/180.72 to qualify #8. A 7.70/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.77/178 in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.79 against Bruce Allen in round two. He qualified #9 again at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.54/181.52 but lost to low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Another non-qualifier came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Dever. There, Don's 8.14/168.41 best was the first alternate. He rebounded by qualifying #7 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.69/181.08. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Eckman in the first round. Beverley ran great at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 7.53/182.92. A 7.63/182.30 beat Joe Clark's quicker 7.59/179 in the first round. In round two, a 7.58/182.29 beat Don Campanello, sending him into the semifinals for the first time in '86. There, he ran into eventual winner Glidden. Don ran a strong 7.53/182.96 but lost to Bob's 7.41/189. The next event showed that Don Beverly was for real. It was at Maple Grove on September 14 for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Don qualified #4 with a strong 7.48/184.99. A 7.60/184.80 advanced past a fouling Eckman in round one, while in round two, his 7.49/184.88 advanced when Butch Leal fouled against him. Coonce's 7.73/163 fell behind in the semifinals as Beverly moved into the final with a 7.50/184.38. In the final, he met Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro. Don was not the underdog in the final, as Allen had run a 7.51 best in eliminations. Don scored his first-ever NHRA Pro Stock win in the final with a 7.54/184.42 over Bruce's 7.57/184. |

Notes: This was the car and the team everybody was trying to beat in '83. Shepherd was impossible to "rattle" behind the wheel. Lee started the season by qualifying #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.87/174.41. He beat Jerry Eckman in the first round, with a 7.90. In the second round, he faced low qualifier Bob Glidden, and Shepherd fouled away a 7.85/174.41 while Bob advanced with a 7.93. Lee made up for his mistake by dominating the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.67/181.08 (Top Speed) qualified #1. He then set Low ET of the meet in the opening round, where his 7.64/181.08 beat Johnny Dowey. In round two, Joe Lepone's 7.79/176 fell to his 7.70/180.00. He dumped Glidden in the semifinal with a 7.66/181.08 (again!) before facing Frank Iaconio in an all Camaro final. Iaconio knew he had to push the tree, and he did a little too hard, fouling away a 7.75/180 while Shepherd ran 7.68/180.00 for the victory. The next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car field, and Shepherd's 7.81/176.81 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 7.80. Lee's 7.85/172.41 advanced past a fouling Bubba Corzine in the opening round, and in the semifinal, his 7.82/175.78 beat Warren Johnson's 7.86/174. He faced Lepone in the final, and Joe fouled, giving Lee his second win of the young season with a 9.21/105.75. He didn't have to wait long before winning again. That came on May 29 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3 at 7.76/177.51. Corzine fouled against him again in the opening round, and Lee moved on with a 7.84/176.81. In the semifinal, a 7.82/177.16 beat Johnson. He faced Iaconio again in another final, and Lee's 7.76/177.86 scored the win. Ran best times of 7.652/181.81 at the OCIR World Finals. Earlier ran 181.81 at Indy. Lost on a holeshot to WJ in the race but came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Notes: Warren did not compete at the NHRA Winternationals. The reason for this was that NHRA did not approve his cylinder heads. He was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race held shortly after. This is where he debuted his new Cutlass and showed up with a new 18-wheeler to haul it in. It was an eight-car show, and WJ qualified #2 with a 7.91/174.41. He won his opening race over Russell Jung with a 7.85/175.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, in the semifinal, his late 7.91/174.41 lost to Wayne Ellison's 8.04/171. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.71/178.57. He slept on the line in the first round, and his 7.73/177 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.77/176. I believe he was still running the 500 cubic inch engine at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.77/177.86 qualified second to Lee Shepherd's 7.71/178.A 7.87/172.08 beat Phillips 8.03/174 in the opening round. He reached the final, where he ran Shepherd. The two had a good race, but Lee's 7.69/181 got the better of WJ's 7.72/180.36. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 7.84/174.75 qualified #4. In the first round, he faced Phillips again, and WJ's 7.87/172.74 beat Carlton's 8.04/172. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Shepherd's 7.82/175 beat his 7.86/174.08. He had an interesting day at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He actually got beat twice. He lost to Shepherd in the semifinal, but Lee forgot to weigh in after the race, and WJ was reinstated. He went up against Rickie Smith in the final, losing for the second time.WJ then went to Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.69 (Low ET) at 177.86 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 7.75/177.16 beat Joe Lepone's 7.92/174. In the semifinal, the pesky Camaro from Texas beat him, Lee's 7.82/177 beat WJ's late 7.77/177.86. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He always ran well at Bristol, and '83 was no exception. His 7.86/178 qualified #3. His best run came in round two, where a 7.83/181.45 beat Roy Hill's Capri. But once again, he lost to Shepherd in the semifinal. WJ won the World Finals at OCIR, his first in exactly one year. WJ qualified his Hurst Olds third with a 7.658 and, in eliminations, ran 7.68, 7.70, 7.71, and 7.69, defeating Rickie Smith, Jerry Eckman, Bob Glidden, and Lee Shepherd (on a holeshot to Shepherd's 7.68). Warren's best NHRA speed was 181.08 at Indy. |

Notes: Dave started the '86 season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.70/179.28. An even better 7.67/179.28 in the first round, lost to Ken Dondero's 7.59/179. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but in the first round, his 7.71/176.12 lost to Butch Leal's 7.55/182. Things didn't go so well at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. Dave's best of 7.68/178.92 failed to qualify (first alternate). He made up for the lackluster performance by going to Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals and qualifying #2 with a 7.58/183.71. Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Glidden in the first round. He again qualified well at the next event, the Springnationals at National Trail. Don qualified #4 with a 7.58/179.03. A first-round 7.63/176.92 beat Reid Whisnant's 7.71/178. A holeshot by Jerry Eckman in round two put the Camaro on the trailer. Hutchens' 7.66/176.95 lost to Eckman's 7.69/179. In Canada for the Grandnationals, a 7.62/181.74 qualified #6. | At the US Nationals Hutchens qualified #3 with a 7.496/187.57. In round 1 Hutchens ran #11 qualifier Don Campanello but Hutchens would red light & throw away a 7.589. |

Notes: WJ entered the season strong as he had won the season-ending NHRA World Finals in '83 and was looking for more in '84. At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #3 with a 7.71. Johnson lasted until the semifinals before he fouled against Frank Iaconio. Still, he set Top Speed of the meet for the Pro Stock class at 180.36. He showed his stuff at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, there a 7.662/181.81 qualified #4, and he went on to win. A 7.682/182.55 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record) beat a fouling Johnny Downey. His 7.677/181.45 took out Don Campanello, who also fouled in round two. In the semifinals, WJ slowed to 7.747/172.74, but it was still enough to beat Butch Leal's 7.75/175. This put him into the final against Iaconio. Warren made his best run of the weekend, a 7.643/180.72, to get the victory over Frank's 7.73/180. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. WJ set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 7.70/181.81. In round one, he beat Mark Yuill with a 7.75/179.64, but he lost to Lee Shepherd in round two. It was not without controversy as Shepherd's Camaro lost its hood on the run. Warren insisted on having the car weighed to assure that it still weighed in at the legal 2,350 lbs. Even without the hood, the Texas Camaro was legal. He was the top qualifier again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.65 (Low ET) at 181.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Roy Hill in the first round. He had Low ET and Top Speed at the NHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 7.71/181.08. But once again, he lost early; this time, Gordie Rivera gated him in the second round, and his 7.83 beat Johnson's quicker 7.74. These early losses would come back to haunt Warren and the end of the year for the points championship. He pulled it all together at the NHRA Grandnationals, where a 7.68/182.55 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Joe Lepone, Ken Dondero, and Don Coonce to meet with Bob Glidden in the final. Bob's T-Bird was getting stronger as the year progressed, and in the final, his 7.69/180 narrowly lost to WJ's 7.68/182.18. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Warren was finally out-qualified for the first time in four races. His 7.68/180.72 (Top Speed) was second only to Glidden's 7.67. He beat Rich Marino in round one, before losing to Shepherd in the second round. WJ was back on top at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where he set an 8.02 track record at 172.74 in qualifying #1. He beat Gene Fasching, Leal, and in the semifinals, he beat Glidden's 8.13/169 with an 8.06/171.10. In the finals, he met Shepherd. This was Johnson's day as he won with an 8.07/171.75 over Lee's 8.14/166. In August, Warren took his eighth NHRA National victory at the Northstar Nationals at Brainerd. He had "only" qualified #3 with a 7.76/181.08 (Top Speed), but he beat Jerry Eckman, Coonce, and Glidden to meet Shepherd again in the final. It was a good race, but Lee's 7.76/177 finished runner-up to Johnson's 7.75/180.36. He was sure closing the points gap between himself and Shepherd with his late-season surge, and it continued at the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.66/182.18, and he improved to 7.63 in the first round, over Coonce. In round two, a 7.64/182.18 beat Ronnie Manchester, and in the semis, another 7.63 beat Rivera. In the final, he faced Glidden. Bob had been running about a tenth slower in eliminations, but in the final, he picked up to a 7.65/180 that almost beat WJ's 7.63/181.45. Surprisingly, for only the third NHRA National event of '84, Warren failed to get Top Speed of the meet. It looked like he had a good chance of winning the NHRA Pro Stock Championship going into the World Finals with a 42 point advantage over Shepherd. A 7.75/181.08 qualified #5, but things took an unexpected turn in the first round. Matched against Rickie Smith, the Oldsmobile could only muster a 7.97/175.09 that lost to Smith's 7.89/174. The season and any hopes for the '84 world championship came to a close. Still, it was an excellent season for WJ, his best since entering Pro Stock with five wins and a second-place finish in the points standings. Notes: Lepone could not run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals as "Grumpy's" new car wasn't ready. Joe qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.73/177.16. A first-round 7.72/176.81 beat John Brumley's 7.92/174, but his 7.79/176.42 lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 7.70/180 in the second round. The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where the PRO fields were eight-car fields. Lepone had no trouble, running 7.82/174.41 for the #3 spot in the show. A 7.87/172.08 in the first round beat Johnny Dowey's 7.95/173. He got out on Reid Whisnant in the semifinal, and his 7.90/173.07 held on to win over the Mopar's 7.88/175. In the final, he ran Shepherd. Joe pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled, handing the win to Lee. Joe shut down to a 9.02. On May 1, he won the US Manufacturer's Championships at Maple Grove. He qualified second for the eight-car show with a 7.89. He made three 7.90 passes to win the race. He beat Wally Balchunas and Bob Harris before beating Ronnie Manchester's 7.98/170 in the final for the title. Lepone's final round times were 7.90/171.10. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field; unfortunately, his 7.84/174.41 qualified #5. That was bad as it set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Warren Johnson. In the opening round, WJ's 7.75/177 beat Joe's 7.92/174.41. NHRA's next race was the Springnationals at Columbus. A 7.87/174.41 qualified #7. In the opening round, his 7.94/172.74 defeated Mark Yuill's 8.00/172. In round two, his 7.94/173.45 fell to Frank Iaconio's 7.84/173. He also qualified #7 at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he didn't stick around long as he lost to eventual winner Shepherd in the first round. Early in P/S, Englishtown was a race where Bill Jenkins or his driver, Larry Lombardo, ran really well. The magic had gone away by the '80s, and in '83, things weren't any better. Joe qualified #9 with a 7.90/175.09 at the Summernationals, but in the opening round, Iaconio's 7.76/178 put his 7.89/175.43 on the trailer. Joe's best NHRA national event times came at the World Finals at OCIR at 7.662/180.00, where he went to the semis. Did he run 180.72 somewhere this year? Photo from Brainerd 1983. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Volume 1, Number 9, December 86/January 87. | NHRA Baton Rouge LA 5/86 | Gordie gave Bob Glidden a good race in round one, of the 1986 Keystone Nats, losing to Bob's 7.42 with his best time of the year, a personal best 7.498. Interesting, his best speed of the year came in a round one loss to Glidden at Indy. Gordie had a good year, qualifying well at all but one NHRA event, the World Finals, where he was the first alternate. |

Notes: Don ran 7.65/180.28 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Frank Sanchez with a 7.66/179.85 before losing to Ken Dondero's 7.70/176 in round two with a 7.75/178.21. At the Gatornationals, a best of 7.78/175.84 failed to crack the 7.76 bump. Don made the show at the Southern Nationals with a 7.83/176.60 qualifying #14, but he lost to Dondero in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Coonce qualified #9 with a 7.73/180.07, but again went home early. At the Springnationals in June, he again qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 7.72/178.35, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden, which he lost. Don had the same thing happen to him at the next event, the Grandnationals, where he again qualified #9 (7.63/181.81) and again lost to the low qualifier (Bruce Allen) in the first round. He qualified #9 (again!) at the Summernationals with a 7.66, and in the first round, he fouled against Glidden. It was tough to make these shows, and Coonce was doing great in qualifying, but qualifying in the ninth spot was always a bad position as you had to run the low qualifier in the first round. Don had just qualified #9 at four meets in a row. Things went better at Denver, where he ran 8.02/172.41 to qualify #3 behind Glidden and Warren Johnson. |

Notes: First backed up 500-inch National record at 7.822 at the 82 Winternationals, which he won over Lee Shepherd. Qualified #2 there, 7.87/174.41. Won Indy 82 with a 7.803 to 7.809 against Bob Glidden's EXP, after qualifying 4th at 7.790/174.75. | As mentioned, Frank started the '82 season by setting the NHRA record and winning the first 500 cubic inch NHRA race at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.87/174.41 behind Shepherd's 7.84. Frank picked up to his 7.82 in the first round, with a speed of 173.41 to beat Jerry Eckman's 8.06/168. In round two, his 7.84/171.75 took out Jerry Janke and a semifinal 7.86/173.41 beat Rickie Smith's 7.95/172, setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio final. Both had been the only cars running 7.8s in eliminations. Lee's semifinal 7.84 gave him lane choice, but he fell off to 8.02/156 in the final while Frank got the victory with a 7.83/174.08. The battle between these two moved on to the NHRA Gatornationals where Frank's 7.83/174.75 again qualified #2 behind Lee's 7.77. In the first round, both ran 7.8s with Iaconio's 7.89/173.41 beating Mark Yuill. A second-round 7.90/173.74 beat Joe Anderson and in the semifinals, his 7.90/173.07 got him into the final against Shepherd. The two Camaros had a close race, but Lee's 7.88/174 got the win over Frank's 7.89/172.74. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Southern Nationals. Of course, the two Camaro's qualified one-two, but this time Iaconio led the pack with a 7.82/174.08. But he was upset in the first round, by Bob Glidden who qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Lee went on to win the race. Both Shepherd and Iaconio took their 500 cubic inch cars to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals to test how their cars would do against the mountain motored cars. They did pretty well as once again the two Camaros met in the final. It was another close race, but Shepherd's 7.89 got the victory over Iaconio's 7.92. By this time, Frank must have been getting sick of a certain white Camaro from Texas, but he kept on running into it in the finals. It happened again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Frank's 7.88 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's Camaro at 7.81. An 8.04 in round one, beat Jim Meyer's surprising Mopar while a 7.94/173 beat Warren Johnson's Starfire in the semifinals. Lee and Frank lined up and once again Lee grabbed the victory with a 7.90/173 over Frank's 7.93/173. Things went a little different as Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Frank's best of 7.84/173.74 in qualifying slipped to the #3 spot in the field. This was due to Glidden slipping his little EXP into second behind Shepherd in the qualifying order. What this ended up doing was setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio match in the semifinals rather than the final. Lee caught a great light and his 7.96/173 held on to win over Frank's quicker 7.93/172.41. At least Glidden stopped Shepherd in the final, which was good for Iaconio as far as the points went. He grabbed a win at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove near the end of June. He beat Don Campanello and Bob Ingles to reach the finals with times of 7.96/170.77 and 7.94/171.10. In the final, he faced Andy Mannarino and his 8.02/171.10 took home the trophy over Andy's 8.12/170. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals early in July. He qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. He slipped to the #5 (7.93) spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. An opening round 7.95 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.01, but he lined up against Shepherd in round two and he attempted to gain an advantage on the 'tree and fouled. After that, Frank was at Atco for a mid-week Pro Stock race. He was performing really well, running 7.75 twice and a 7.77 at 178. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren Johnson in the final. Frank then won Indy, over a great field of cars. His best times came at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, where he ran 7.747 at 176.12. |
