Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762, 179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division two race, winning with a holeshot 7.95-166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91-168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87-174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round and an 8.02-171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84 but a final run of 7.88-175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74-178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91-175.09. A first round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90-174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91-173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85-173.07 qualified #5 in the eight car show, setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first round race, Lee's 7.83-174 beat Johnson's 7.87-173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA PS tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 7.89-174.75. A first round 7.93-173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified first. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on Oct 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He had qualified #2 with a 7.66 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA PS to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69-179.28 beat Lee's 7.74-179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting low ET in qualifying first with a 7.73, setting top speed at 178.92 and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78-176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86-177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in Nov. He set low ET and top speed in qualifying first with a 7.89-178.57. He was the only PS'er in the sevens at the event. A first round 8.03-176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92-177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84-175.43 (top speed) qualified first. A first round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set low ET with a 7.79-175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96-172.

Notes: Teamed with Rod Shop. Times from Drag Racing List Volume 1, Number 9. Photo from Indy 87. | Leal qualified #3 at the season opening Winternationals at Pomona with a 7.582-182.55. In the first round he ran another 7.58 at 179.28 to advance when Stan Mizell broke on the line. In the second round, Ken Dondero fouled against him and Leal went into the semifinals with a 7.62. He faced Frank Iaconio in that semi final race and Leal fouled away a 7.63 that let Iaconio's 7.64 go on into the final. At the Gatornationals, a 7.53-184.95 qualified #3. He beat Dave Hutchens in the first round with a 7.55-182.70 and in round two, a 7.56-183.00 beat Dempsey Hardy. Butch got a jump on Bruce Allen in the semifinals, winning with a 7.54-183.22 over Allen's 7.52-179. In the final he faced Don Campanello. Unfortunately, Leal beat himself when he fouled away a 7.54-183.29 giving Campanello his first NHRA win. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. Butch qualified #4 with a 7.56-183.89 and in round one he beat Reid Whisnant. In the second round, he only ran 7.89-180 but still advanced over Jerry Eckman. The semifinals saw Leal face Bob Glidden. Bob beat Leal to the finish and then had his T-Bird crash and roll at the top end of the track. Bob was OK. Leal got back into the finals at the next race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. There he had qualified #4 with a 7.59-185.91. He beat Hardy in the first round and in round two, a 7.63-167.03 advanced when Don Coonce fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Reid Whisnant with a 7.66-180. But in the final, he fouled and gave Warren Johnson the win. All things went right for Butch at Columbus for the Springnationals on June 15. He had qualified #2 with a 7.58-183.03. Coonce was Leal's first victim which he took out with a 7.67-181.58. Somewhere along the way to round two he found 5 mph when he beat Iaconio with a 7.67 at a new track speed record of 186.25. In the semifinal, a 7.63-182.03 beat Eckman's 7.71-179. In the final he faced Johnson and this time their roles were reversed from the final at Baton Rouge. WJ fouled and Leal motored to a 7.61-182.81 victory.

Notes: Photo from Martin, MI 83. Number 2 qualifier and national speed record at Cajun Nationals in 6/84 at 7.676, 184.42. | Don qualified #6 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.75. He lasted until the second round before losing to Lee Shepherd. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a great 7.66-182.18 qualified #3. He beat Rich Marino's Camaro in the first round and a 7.78-179.99 beat Reid Whisnant in round two. But in the semifinals, his 7.77-180.36 lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.75-179. He qualified #3 again at the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. This time a 7.74 got him the spot. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the first round against Joe Lepone. He really shook up the troops at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.67-184.42 (top speed) qualified #2. He failed to reach the finals. A 7.78 qualified #5 at the PHR Championships but he lost in the first round.

Notes: Levi Garrett chewing tobacco sponsorship. Times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Allen qualified second at the US Nationals with a 7.46-186.33 and lasted until the final only to lose a 7.50-188.63 to 7.70-161.84 decision to Bob Glidden. Allen started the season by qualifying fourth at the NHRA Winternats with a 7.58-181.08. A first round 7.59-180.36 beat Gordie Rivera but a second round 7.64-179.64 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.53-183. He then raced at the Gatornationals where a 7.65-183.52 beat Joe Clark and a 7.69-178.34 beat Bob Glidden moving him into the semis where a quicker 7.52-179.49 lost to Butch Leal's 7.54-183. It was on to the Southern Nats where a 7.55-181.24 qualified third. He made it into the semis before losing to Johnson. At the Cajun Nats in June, a 7.59-181.67 qualified fifth but WJ seemed to have Allen's number. The two met in the second round and despite a quicker 7.61-176.22 he lost to WJ's 7.63-183. At the Spring Nats he again qualified fifth with a 7.59-178.11. He beat Lee Dean in the first round with a 7.65-175.40 before falling in the second round to WJ again. This time Allen's 7.68-176.53 lost to WJ's 7.64-182.77.

Notes: Confirmed 177.51 at Indy 82 and Golden Gate Nats 82. Number 3 qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.784 and then runner up to Frank Iaconio at Indy, 7.803 to 7.809. #3 qualifier at first 500 inch pro stock race at the Winters, 7.899-174.08. This car was being built by Don Hardy with the intent to run a 351 Cleveland motor. When NHRA switched to the 500 ci rules format, Ford wanted Bob to run the EXP anyway. Glidden had to shove a Boss 429 into the little 92" wheelbase car and hope for the best. His stated after he retired that it was the worst car he ever drove and that it handled like a fuel altered. Even with his limited experience with the 429 (he had tried a small c.i. Boss motor in testing in '81) he managed to qualify #3 at the season opening NHRA Winternationals with a 7.89-174.08. He stayed in the sevens during eliminations, running a 7.94-172.74 over Don Campanello in the first round and a 7.95-173.41 over Jim Meyer in round two, but going up against Lee Shepherd in the semifinals, Bob fouled. The Gatornationals showed how far behind the Glidden's were with the little car. His mph readings were great, third highest in qualifying at 174.41. But the car wouldn't ET. His 7.97 qualified #9 in the field setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that race, Bob's 8.09-171.75 finished second to Lee's 7.86-175. Things went slightly better in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Glidden's 8.03-174 got past a fouling Frank Iaconio in the first round and in the semifinal, a 7.89-173 beat Joe Lepone's 8.00-170 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. The EXP was in its first final round appearance but an 8.02-174.41 performance gave Bob a runner-up finish to Shepherd's 7.81-174. A 7.90 qualified #3 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Andy Mannarino in the first round, but facing Shepherd in the semifinal, Bob fouled out. Somehow the car got down the track straight in four runs to win the NHRA Springnationals. This was Bob's only NHRA win of '82. He had qualified #2 with a 7.82-175.43. He had a little luck in the semi finals when Warren Johnson fouled away a 7.96 to Glidden's 8.01. But in the final he met Shepherd again. This time Bob outran the Texas Camaro with a 7.92-170.77 to Lee's 7.93-172. He got another runner-up finish to Shepherd at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. An 8.31 qualified #2 and in the first round, an 8.35-162.45 beat Bubba Corzine. In the semifinals, he beat Don Coonce but his final round 8.30-156.79 lost to Lee's 8.27-164. Glidden made it as far as the semifinals at the NHRA Grandnationals. There he lost a 7.84 to 7.85 decision to WJ. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, a 7.83-177.86 (top speed) qualified #2. He ran a 7.94 in the first round over Mannarino, but an off pace 8.10-154 lost in round two to Lepone. In August, he was at US 131 for the PHR Championships. He ran a 7.83-172.74 to qualify #3. In the first round, a 7.85-173.41 beat Lepone's 7.99-169. But in the semifinals, once again his nemesis Shepherd downed him with a 7.85-174 over Bob's 7.94-173.07. He got his first pole of the year at the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals. Bob ran 7.87 (low ET) at 174.75 to get the spot. Unfortunately, in the first round both he and Iaconio ran 7.92's with Frank getting the win at 168 mph over Glidden's hard charging 174.08. At Indy for the US Nationals, the EXP dipped into the 7.7's for the first time, qualifying #3 with a 7.78. Bob made it into yet another final (his fourth of the year), but this time it wasn't against Shepherd. Iaconio had taken Lee out in the semifinal so it was Frank facing off against Bob this time. Both ran 7.80's in the final, with the EXP hitting 175.78 to the Camaro's 173. But Iaconio got the win and Bob had to settle for another runner-up spot. Bob qualified third at Fremont with a best ever 7.68 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on Oct 3.

Notes: Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 8.17-166.35 was only good enough for first alternate.Jim got into the field when Mike Edwards had problems and withdrew from competition.A first round 8.15-167.28 advanced when Sonny Bryant fouled. In round two,he faced Bob Glidden and it was his turn to foul. He made the show at the NHRA Southern Nationals, but in the first round Joe Lepone's 8.05-170 beat his quicker 7.96-172.74. He scored a win in May at Baylands Raceway for the second NHRA Division six race.A final round 7.86(low ET) at 176.12 beat Bryant's Camaro for the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals,a 7.97 qualified #6 in the tough eight car field. He lost to Frank Iaconio in the first round. He surprised a lot of people at National Trail on June 13 for the NHRA Springnationals by qualifying #5 with a 7.91-172.08.He beat Pat Musi in the first round before losing to Lee Shepherd in the second round.

Notes: Frank came close to winning the 1983 NHRA Pro Stock championship, but lost to a controversial run at the world finals. After qualifying number one, the points leader was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition, after running 7.80s all year.

Notes: Photo from 1983 NHRA Cajun Nationals. Glidden qualified #4 with a 7.770 at 178.92 and reached semifinals. After a very trying year in '82, with the EXP that was actually built with the intent that there would still be weight factors run in '82, Bob was happy to be in a new Hardy built longer wheelbase Thunderbird. He had only been able to win one race (NHRA Springnationals) in '82 and was looking to do much better in '83. He debuted the car at the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified first with a 7.82-177.86. A first round 7.86-174.75 beat Bubba Corzine and a 7.93 advanced in round two when Lee Shepherd fouled. In the semifinals, a 7.88-176.81 beat Roy Hill and in the final, Bob slowed to a 7.99-174.41 that lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.81-175. At the second NHRA event of '83, the Gatornationals, a 7.74-176.81 qualified #7. He beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round and a 7.80 in round two beat Carlton Phillips' 7.88. In the semifinal Shepherd beat him with a 7.66. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17, Glidden failed to qualify for the eight car field. That was the last time that Glidden would fail to qualify for a NHRA race for a long, long time. He rebounded from his non-qualifier by qualifying #2 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.78-177.51. A first round 7.81 advanced when Roy Hill's Capri broke and in round two, Reid Whisnant fouled against him. Bob motored to a 7.81-177.16 for the win. In the semifinals, he faced Butch Leal and his 7.85-177.51 beat Leal's 7.92-173. He was up against Iaconio in the final. The two reversed the outcome of the Winternationals with Bob's 7.79-178.21 (top speed) taking the victory over Frank's 7.83-174. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Glidden set low ET and top speed in qualifying first with a 7.72-179.64.
