Notes: The Fastest Limited Pro Stock 1981 NHRA with 8.23 National Record. Also set 8.31 National Record at Gators. Also 161.00 at 81 Pomona Winters and 160.14 at 81 Cajuns. Photo from Gators. | Bob entered the '81 season with backing from Firestone and Ford's Motorcraft Division. This was the first time Ford gave any support to Glidden. The season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where Bob was using a 327 cubic inch engine early in qualifying. He made it to the top of the charts and then switched to his trusty 343 cubic inch motor. With that combo, he ran track records of 8.33/163.04 to qualify first. The only car near his in qualifying was Lee Shepherd's at 8.38; everyone else was in at 8.50 to 8.62. Glidden started eliminations by beating Roy Hill with an 8.41/159. In the second round, he beat another Mopar, the Omni of Paul Gentilozzi with an 8.47/159. The semifinals saw Bob take out Frank Iaconio's Camaro with an 8.45/160. This put him into the final against first-time NHRA finalist, Pat Musi. Bob won his 3second NHRA National event with an 8.38/161.00 over Musi's 8.52/159. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob reset the NHRA National record to 8.31 in qualifying. The speed on that run was 162.74, good enough for Top Speed of the meet. He continued to run strong in eliminations, running 8.35/162.16 in the first round, over a fouling Don Coonce and in round two Bob Ingles fouled against him and Glidden moved into the semifinals with an 8.48/160.71. But in the semis, the Fairmont got out of shape and Bob shut down to 10.01/89.99 that lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.41/161. Shortly after this, Glidden showed up at Bowling Green, Kentucky for some test runs. What was unusual about this was his engine. A destroked to 370 cubic inch Boss 429 was in the Fairmont. The times on his runs were in the 8.50's with speeds in the upper 150's. The Cleveland engine was back in the car at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional race. Bob qualified #2 in the eight-car field with an 8.28/162.16 behind Shepherd's 8.26/161. Glidden improved to 8.25/163.63 in his first-round win over Steve Taylor and in the semifinals, a great 8.23 beat Jerry Janke. This set up a Shepherd vs Glidden final for the first time in '81. It was a good final round race as both ran 8.31/163.04, but Glidden won as Shepherd had left a red light on the 'tree. On April 26, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta. The Pro categories had eight-car fields. Bob qualified #3 with an 8.44/160.42 behind the Camaros of Shepherd and Iaconio. In round one, Bob's 8.50 beat Warren Johnson and set up a semifinal run with Shepherd. In the Semis, Glidden fouled and Lee won with an 8.49/159. Bob was also at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Englishtown and while he failed to make the finals, he did set Low ET at 8.31. Another win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again Bob qualified #3 behind Shepherd and Iaconio. A first-round 8.46 beat Coonce and in the semifinals, he ran Shepherd. As always when these two raced, a great race. Bob's 8.44/161.00 beat Lee's 8.45/161. This moved Glidden into the final against surprise finalist, Andy Mannarino. Andy's Firebird was almost a tenth off of Bob's pace, but he picked up to an 8.51 in the final to make it close as Glidden's 8.46/160.14 got him the victory. He would win only one more NHRA National event in '81 and it came at the next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #2 with an 8.50/159.29 behind Shepherd's 8.46/160. Both would work their way to the final. Bob beat Dave Hutchens in round one, with an 8.52/157.89 and in round two his 8.53/157.61 beat Ingles. He ran Low ET of eliminations with an 8.47 at 158.72 in the semifinals to take out Alban Gauthier's hard running Arrow. Once again it was Shepherd vs Glidden in the final. Shepherd fouled with an 8.51/159 with Bob ran 8.49/159.29 for career victory #34. It was a whole year before victory #35. He came close to winning at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.97/150.25 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's white Camaro. In eliminations, the Fairmont was the only car that ran in the eights. A first-round an 8.98/149.00 beat Harry Scribner, and in the semifinals, his 8.97/149.75 beat Gordie Rivera. Shepherd and Glidden lined up for the final with Glidden having the edge as Lee's best time in eliminations had been 9.02. Shepherd stayed consistent with a 9.03/149 in the final while Bob set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.91/151.26. The only problem was, he had left a red light on at the line. Glidden must have been kicking himself for that one. Then came the NHRA Eastern Regional race at Indianapolis. Shepherd and Iaconio did not attend so you would think it was a piece of cake for Bob. It was not to be. First Bob was only able to qualify #2 with an 8.49/159.01 behind Musi's 8.47/163. That was unusual enough, but then in round one, his 8.64/158.45 lost to Mannarino's 8.59/155. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Bob used an 8.42/159.85 to qualify #3. In round one he beat Johnson with an 8.53/159.01 and an 8.56/158.73 took out Ingles in round two. This gave fans a Shepherd-Glidden confrontation in the semifinals. Bob was quicker in their race with an 8.50/159.01, but Lee got the win with a quicker-leaving 8.51/158. The two would meet again at Maryland just a few days later for the US Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field and Glidden beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round, with an 8.56 and in round two another 8.56 beat Musi. Once again Bob ran Shepherd in the semifinals, and once again Lee prevailed with his 8.54 beating Glidden's 8.61. Next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Glidden set a track record 8.31 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 162.45. It tied for Top Speed of the meet and a new track record, but Gauthier ran the number first. Bob was running well. He beat Musi in round one, with an 8.43 and in the semifinals his 8.47/159.85 beat Iaconio. Of course, he met Shepherd in the final. Both had run 8.47 in the semis so it was anyone's race. Glidden fouled and Shepherd got his 13th career win. I believe that it was around this time he got the nickname "Mad Dog." He was at US 131 for the PHR Championships where he ripped off an 8.38 (Low ET) at 159.01 to qualify first. Unfortunately, he fell off to 8.67/135.54 in a first-round loss to Coonce. If that wasn't bad enough, Shepherd went on to win. Next came Indy. Glidden always ran well at Indy. It didn't start so well as he lost an engine in qualifying. After installing another engine the Fairmont's 8.44/161.00 held for the #3 spot. Gauthier broke against him in the first round, and Bob advances with an 8.50/158.17. In round two, Iaconio's Camaro broke on the line and an 8.45/160.14 advanced into the semifinals against John Hagen's Arrow. The two had a close race with Glidden's 8.44 beating John's 8.46. The Texas Camaro was waiting to meet Bob in the final. This time Glidden got beat as Lee's 8.40/160 outran Bob's 8.46/160.14.

Notes: Car used destroked big block which help the team in 82 when the 500 CID limit was enforced. After losing the 1980 NHRA World Championship in the last race of the season, the Reher-Morrison team was back in '81 to finish what they started. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.38/160.42 behind Bob Glidden's track record 8.33. Everyone expected a final round showdown between these two, but it wasn't to be. Lee improved to an 8.35/160.14 in the first round, to advance when Ray Allen, driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro fouled. But in round two, Shepherd fouled against Pat Musi. Glidden went on to win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Shepherd once again qualified #2 with an 8.35/160.42 behind Glidden who reset the NHRA record to 8.31. Lee ran 8.41/159.01 and 8.46/159.29 to beat Allen and Mark Yuill in the first two rounds before coming up against Musi in the semifinals. Lee ran 8.48/57.06 and lost to Pat's 8.44/161. At least Lee got to see Glidden lose in the same round to Frank Iaconio. The next race was the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley. It was an eight-car show and Glidden and Shepherd qualified one-two. This time Shepherd's 8.26/161.87 out-qualified Bob's 8.28. These two would meet in the final. Lee ran 8.30/163.63 in the first round, over Jim Basko's 8.51/161 and an 8.35/163.93 (Top Speed) beat Don Coonce in the semifinals. Bob had run 8.2's in eliminations and in the final Lee pushed the tree too hard to get an advantage and fouled. Both cars ran 8.31/163.04 so if he hadn't fouled it would have been close. Atlanta was the next stop for the team. Shepherd set Low ET in qualifying #1 with an 8.40/159.85. An 8.54 advanced in round one, when Dave Hutchens fouled and in the semifinals he met Glidden. This time it was Bob who fouled and Lee moved into the final with an 8.49/159.01. This time his final round opponent was Iaconio. Lee ran 8.48/159.29 to get the win over Frank's 8.55/157.

Notes: Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden waged war in Pro Stock unlike any had seen before in the class. Glidden started the season in his Arrow, in which he had won the NHRA Pro Stock championship the year before. It wasn't cutting it in 1980. Lee won the first two NHRA events of the season, with Glidden's best showing being a runner-up at the Gatornationals. Bob had Don Hardy build him a new Fairmont that debuted at Suffolk for a match race against Bill Jenkins. He had just delivered the Arrow to its new owner. Glidden was happy to be back in a Ford as he defeated Jenkins three straight with times of 8.35/158, 8.37/158, and 8.51/153. He then took it to Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. During qualifying, he reset the NHRA speed record to 162.16. The accompanying ET of 8.43 (Low ET) gave him the pole. In the first round, he ran 8.52/153.32 to beat Don Coonce's 8.74/153, and an 8.46/154.10 in the semi-final beat Jim Mikel's 8.85/153. In the final, he blasted out a 8.51/158.17 for the victory over Sam Gianino's off-pace 9.29/154. He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals the following week. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 8.41 at 160.71 while Shepherd qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.54, meaning that the two would meet in the first round. In that first-round match-up, Lee ran another 8.54/158 that beat Glidden's quicker 8.49/160.71. Lee went on to win his third straight national event. Bob had to get his act together quickly if he was to win another championship. On May 4, he won the second Division 3 race at Edgewater, setting Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 with a 8.48/158.45. He beat Andy Mannarino in the final with an 8.50/153.32. He then made a move on Shepherd at the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.52/158.45 qualified #1, while Lee's 8.57 was second in the now big block Camaro. Bob set Low ET in the first round with an 8.49/157.61 single when Roy Hill broke on the line. He got another solo in round two went "Dyno Don's" Mustang broke on the line. Bob advanced with an 8.54. He then stopped Frank Iaconio's 8.60/156 in the semi-final with an 8.53/154. In the final, Bob got his first national event win of the year with an 8.53/155.70 stopping Shepherd's 8.62/155. He then went to Martin, Michigan, for the next NHRA Division Three race and won that as well, beating Joe Satmary in the final. Another win followed on June 28 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bob qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 8.99 (Bandimere's first eight), while the Reher-Morrison Camaro was second with a 9.02. Together they mowed down the competition to meet again in the final, where Bob ran another 8.99/149.50 to win over Shepherd's close 9.01/147. Going into the Summernationals, Bob was 3,000 points behind Shepherd. In qualifying, Glidden looked good, running an 8.41/159.29 for the #1 spot. Lee was second with an 8.48/159. Once again, they ran through the field to meet in the final. Bob ran a best of 8.48/159.85 in eliminations while Lee's best was an 8.50/162. In the final, Shepherd ran an 8.54/158 that beat Bob's 8.53/159.29. Glidden won the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove and set Low ET and Top Speed. He qualified #1 at the PHR Championships with an 8.59 while his nemesis ran an 8.67 for third. Both got past the first-round with Glidden setting Low ET at 8.52 in beating Paul Gentilozzi. Gidden and Shepherd met with the Camaro breaking at half-track in the semifinals and Bob winning with an 8.53/158.17. Bob went on to win the event with a final round 8.58 over Jim Kinnett. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals where an 8.47/159.29 (Top Speed) by Glidden was good for #2 in qualifying as Shepherd got the pole. Once again, the two raced through the field to meet in the final for the fifth time this year. Unfortunately, Bob's line lock was faulty so he rushed through his burnout. In a rush, he left the Lenco in third gear so when the light turned green, the car just bogged off the line. He could only watch as Lee ran an 8.44/159 for his fifth win of the year. Bob also won the final NHRA Division Three race held at Beech Bend near the middle of August. That made it a clean sweep as he won all the Division three races. At the last event, he qualified #1, got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and ran 8.58/157.61. He then beat Coonce's 8.75/153 in the semi-final with a 8.55/157.61. He faced Andy Mannarino in the final and Andy's 8.74/155 finished runner-up to Glidden's 8.54/160.42 (Low ET, Top Speed, and new track records). Bob was kicking himself after Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43/161.29. Both he and the second qualifier (8.45) worked their way to the final. Bob was running much quicker than Shepherd during eliminations. His 8.48/161.00 in the opening round beat Alban Gauthier's 8.85/156. A round two 8.51/158.87 took out Dempsey Hardy's 8.76/154 and in the semi-final, he ran 8.46/160.71 to defeat Iaconio's 8.53/160. By comparison, Lee ran 8.54 in his semi-final race. It looked as though Bob had the edge, but he fouled away an 8.48/154 while Lee got his sixth win with an 8.50/159. Bob was now 426 markers behind Shepherd. Glidden had to do something fast and he did at the next event, the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. He showed up with a new destroked Cleveland of 327 cubic inches. He qualified #1 with an 8.35/159.85 while Shepherd was unusually farther back with an 8.52/157 qualifying #4. Glidden set an 8.324 national record in the semifinal while Lee stayed in the game with an 8.44/158 beating Iaconio and putting the two in yet another final round. This time, Glidden took his fourth NHRA national event win of the year and 30th overall, with an 8.41/159.85 beating Lee's 8.51/158. This tightened up the points chase considerably, but Bob was still a long shot going into the season finale. At the Ontario World Finals, Shepherd and Glidden qualified #1 and #2 at 8.433/159.17 and 8.465/158.17, respectively. Both won in round one, but Shepherd had troubles and slowed to a 16-second shutoff in round two, sending Andy Mannarino on to the third round. Glidden marched through the field and beat Frank Iaconio in the final. His 8.428/159.85 defeated Frank's 8.55/159, set Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet, and claimed Bob the 1980 NHRA Pro Stock championship.

Notes: John's little Arrow kept getting stronger and stronger as the year went on. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with an 8.49/161.00. He beat Joe Anderson's 8.64/154 in the first round, with an 8.65/160.14, but an 8.55/160.14 in round two lost to Pat Musi's 8.45/160. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with an 8.60. In the first round, he lost to Don Nicholson's Boss 429 powered Mustang. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but his 8.68/157.61 qualified #13 for the NHRA Springnationals. An off-pace 8.72/157.34 lost to Andy Mannarino's 8.57/154. The Mopar fans were starting to notice Hagen at Englishtown, where the Arrow set Top Speed at 161.57 in qualifying. His 8.51 time gave him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, an 8.59/161.00 beat Steve Taylor's 8.72/152, but another 8.59/159.85 in round two lost to a quick-leaving Frank Iaconio, who won with an 8.65. A week later (July 26), he was at Brainerd for the fifth NHRA Western Regional event. Hagen made his way to the final by beating Bill Prince with an 8.58/158.73, and a semifinal 8.55/161.87 took out Larry Peternel. In the final, he faced Lee Shepherd, and John sped to an 8.60/162.45 (Top Speed) but lost to Shepherd's 8.55/157. He was disappointed at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 8.51/161.29 best was good for the first alternate. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.53/157.89 qualified #4 in the eight-car field and an 8.51 in the first round, beat Peternel. In the semifinals, he improved to 8.43, but it wasn't enough to beat Shepherd's 8.41. He was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships that featured a "Mountain Motor" Pro Stock show, but his little engine could not compete against the huge engines. He did run 8.49 and 8.51. At Indy, he set Top Speed for the NHRA US Nationals at 163.63. He qualified #5 with an 8.47/161.87 and lasted until the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.44 nipped his 8.46. It was after this that the car really came alive. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.35/164.83 (Top Speed). An even better 8.33/164.83 in round one beat Mark Yuill's 8.62/155. In round two, his 8.42/161.57 advanced when Mannarino fouled, and in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.47/161.29 against Dave Hutchens' 8.50/144. Then came the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Once again, he qualified #2 with an 8.330/165.13. The speed was a new NHRA record. John beat Musi's 8.47/157 in the first round, with an 8.43/164.23. A round two 8.44/163.33 advanced when Don Coonce fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Yuill's 8.46/159 with an 8.42/164.53. The only trouble was, while Hagen was flying in the speed department, Shepherd was the quickest with an 8.27 in qualifying and an 8.37 semifinal win. John picked it back up to an 8.39/164.23 in the final, but he still lost to Lee's 8.35/161. It was still a great showing, and with the new 500 cubic inch rules going into effect for '82, he was expected to do well in the new season. He ended up finishing seventh in the season-long NHRA points chase. John also ran 164.77 at Brainerd WCS 7/81. He was the fastest NHRA Pro Stock car before the switch to 500 cubic inch engines. (Check out the crew chief.)

Notes: Dominated 1980 with 6 wins and 3 runner-ups. Lost the very close championship due to a broken transmission at the World Finals. Ran 8.35/163.45 at Amarillo WCS. Was that altitude factored? Confirmed 160.42 at Englishtown 80. We need to confirm the best sea-level times. | Lee started the '80 season by competing at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show and went on to win, beating Don Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Lee qualified #4 with an 8.52/156.24. He beat Jim Meyer in round one, and in round two, his 8.59/155.97 took out Lee Hunter's Zephyr. In the semifinals, his 8.61 advanced when Bob Glidden's Arrow broke at mid-track. His final-round opponent was to be Kevin Rotty, but Rotty's Camaro broke, so Shepherd soloed to his second NHRA National event Pro Stock win with a 14.38. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9. Once again, the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd met in the final. This time Kevin's didn't break. Lee got the win with an 8.60/155.97 over Rotty's 8.63/154. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 with an 8.49/157.34. He beat Gordie Rivera in round one, and in round two, he beat Frank Iaconio. An 8.50 in the semifinals shut down Joe Satmary's 8.75. In the final, he faced Glidden and his Arrow. Both ran 8.51 (Lee at 156.52), with Shepherd getting the victory. The second Division 4 race was at Green Valley on March 30, and Shepherd set an 8.37 NHRA record in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 161.57 (Top Speed). Once again, the final came down to the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd, and once again, the results were the same, with Lee's 8.42/156.52 beating Kevin's 8.58/157. The Reher-Morrison team continued to dominate Division 4 when they showed up at Houston for the third race. Lee ran 8.61 (Low ET) at 154.37 to qualify first and then went on to win with an 8.74/155.97 that beat Sonny Ray's 8.85/152. Things didn't seem to be going so good for the team when they showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and when qualifying ended, Lee's best of 8.54/158.17 got the #5 spot. That put him up against low qualifier Glidden who had just switched to a Fairmont and set a track record 8.41. Lee was off by a tenth and a half, but he cut a good light in their first-round race, and his 8.54/158.73 beat Bob's quicker 8.49/160. In the semifinals, his 8.56/158.17 beat Rotty's 8.57/159. That set up a final round against Frank Iaconio. Frank had lane choice due to an 8.47 in his semifinal race. Once again, Shepherd proved he could drive as his 8.60/159.01 got the win over Iaconio's 8.55/145. This was his third straight NHRA National event victory.

Notes: Frank and Ray Allen parted ways when Ray went to drive for Bill Jenkins. Frank raced on his own and won two national events. Also 161.29 at Sanair 8/81. | Frank continued to chase Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd in '81 just as he had in '80. If one of those two slipped, he was quick to capitalize on it. He started the season by qualifying #3 behind those two at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.50/159.57. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Glidden. Things went much more Iaconio's way at the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again he qualified #3 behind Bob and Lee with an 8.39/161.29. Another 8.39/157.34 beat Roy Hill's Mopar in round one, while in the second round, he beat Don Nicholson with an 8.41/161.29. Frank got one back on Glidden in the semifinals when Bob got out of shape and shut down while Frank moved into the final with another 8.41/161.29. It wasn't Shepherd he had to race in the final; it was Pat Musi who had beaten Shepherd in his semifinal race. Iaconio won his fourth NHRA National event with an 8.39/161.29 when Musi fouled against him. He had another good run at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. An 8.41/160.71 (Top Speed) qualified #2 in the eight-car field between Lee's 8.40 and Bob's 8.44. He ran 8.53 to beat Mark Yuill in the first round, and in the semifinals, another 8.53/158.17 beat Nicholson. He faced Shepherd in the final and his 8.55/157.89 finished second best to Lee's 8.48/159. Still, a win and a runner-up in the first three NHRA events was pretty good. It got better when he won the NHRA Eastern Regional at Englishtown on May 3. In the final, he set a new NHRA speed record when his 8.39/164.57 beat Andy Mannarino's 8.48/159 for the victory. Another win came at Cayuga for the second NHRA Eastern Regional on May 17. There his final round 8.45 (Low ET) at 160.14 beat Alban Gauthier's 8.62/158. Earlier he had also set Top Speed at 160.42. A week later(May 24), Frank was at State Capitol for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Shepherd and in the first round, he beat Bob Ingles, but in the semifinals, both he and Mannarino ran 8.57 with Andy getting the win light. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.58/158.45 qualified #3, and he improved to 8.55/158.17 in the first round, over a fouling Don Coonce. In round two his 8.56/158.45 beat Yuill. He faced Shepherd in the semifinals and his 8.56/158.17 lost to Lee's 8.53/158.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1981, where Pat began driving this car after racing his white Camaro with Joe Folgore for the early part of the season. Pat qualified #1 at 8.390/161, which held up for Low ET of the event. That was Pat's best NHRA ET of the year, and his 163.04 from Fremont (8.397) was his fastest.

Notes: Andy qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.46/158.72. He fell off to 8.57/155.70 in the first round, and lost to Bob Ingles' 8.54/159. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta had only eight-car Pro fields and Mannarino's best of 8.62 was good for the second alternate. He was at Englishtown on May 3rd for the NHRA Eastern Regional where he made it into the final before losing to Frank Iaconio's 8.39/164 with an 8.48/159.01. Andy also made it to the final at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he qualified #4 in the eight-car field and in round one, he out drove Dave Hutchens by beating Dave's 8.63/155 with an 8.66/161.00. In the semifinals, both he and Iaconio ran 8.57, but Andy got the win light. In the final he faced Bob Glidden and Glidden's 8.46 got the victory over Mannarino's 8.51. At the NHRA Springnationals, he continued to qualify strong, an 8.58/157.89 got him the #5 spot in the field. A first-round 8.57/154.37 beat John Hagen's 8.72/157, but in round two his 8.70/156.79 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.51/158. The thin air of Denver gave the team some trouble at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, still a 9.20/146.34 qualified #5 for the eight-car show, but he faced low qualifier and eventual winner Shepherd in the first round, where Andy's 9.31/148.02 lost to Lee's 9.03/149. He was at Indianapolis for the third NHRA Eastern Regional race where he qualified #6 in another eight-car show. He got a lot of publicity for beating Glidden in the first round, with an 8.59/155.97 that stopped the Ford ace's 8.64/158. Unfortunately, he fell to a holeshot by Dave Hutchens in the semifinals where Dave's 8.71/158 beat Andy's quicker 8.66/156.25. The "M&M Boys" didn't qualify so well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Mannarino's best of 8.54/157.36 qualified #10 and set up a first-round pairing with #2 qualifier Pat Musi. Andy was up to the task in their match, getting out first and running 8.66 to beat Musi's 8.74. In the second round, Andy fouled against Hutchens. As most Pro Stock drivers at the time, the next stop was at Maryland for the US Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car show, but in the first round, Bob Harris upset Mannarino. The following week (July 26), he faced Sam Gianino for a best of three mach race at Central Michigan Dragway. Andy won all three races, hitting 8.69 twice with a best speed of 159.

He ran a career-best (to this point) 8.41 in the first round, to beat Don Patrick's Arrow. In the semifinals he lost to Lee Shepherd. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had only eight-car Pro fields so qualifying was tough, but Don managed to qualify #7. He lost to Glidden in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.65/155.17 qualified #11. He met Frank Iaconio in the first round, and fouled away an 8.68/154.90 while Frank advanced with an 8.55/158. Next stop on the NHRA trail was Denver for the Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field and Don's 9.25/143.54 held for the #7 spot. In the first round his 9.28/143.31 lost to Pat Musi's 9.22/148. He qualified #8 at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional held there in July. An 8.84/152.02 in the first round, lost to Bob Ingles' 8.56/156. Next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Coonce qualified #15 with an 8.64/155.17. In round one he fouled with an 8.81/150.25 while Ingles advanced with an 8.58/157. Don did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was at Martin, Michigan's, US 131 for the PHR Championships the following week. He qualified #5 with an 8.55/156.25 in the eight-car show. Once again he would have to race low qualifier Glidden in round one. Don ran 8.52 in that first-round encounter and won when Bob's Fairmont slowed to 8.67. Don improved to an 8.50 in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough to beat Andy Mannarino's 8.43. Still, it was a good outing - he had beaten Glidden! This was followed by a win at Beech Bend for the NHRA Eastern Regional. A holeshot 8.58/158.73 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.53 in the final. At Indianapolis for the NHRA Nationals, Don really jumped up in qualifying. His 8.45/158.73 held for the #4 spot in the field. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. Only five cars showed at Houston for the NHRA Western Regional final. Coonce ran 8.60/154.37 to qualify #3, but he fouled away an 8.84/153 in the first round, against Doug Messner.

Notes: Andy was at Edgewater on May 4 for the second NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified #2 with an 8.62 behind Bob Glidden's 8.48. These two would work their way through the field to meet in the final. Glidden had the edge and held it with an 8.50/153, beating Mannarino's runner-up effort of 8.71/152.80. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the fourth alternate with an 8.87/154.90. But as the season progressed, the team got stronger. At the NHRA Summernationals, Andy qualified #7 with an 8.60/155.97. An 8.69/154.10 beat Don Nicholson's 8.87/152 in round one, but in round two, his 8.67/156.52 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.56/157. He was at Maple Grove in August at the NHRA Division 1 race. There he lasted until the semifinals, where an 8.73/153.58 lost to eventual winner Iaconio's 8.57/156. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.66/154.90 qualified #6. The race was then rained out after qualifying, and Mannarino packed up and left for the PHR Meet at Martin, Michigan. Andy qualified #2 there with an 8.61 and another 8.61/155.17 in the first round, beat Joe Satmary. He was caught napping on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.65 lost to Jim Kinnett's 8.74. The following week (August 17), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. A first-round 8.72/157.61 advanced over a fouling Larry Peternel, and in the semifinals, his 8.67/158.73 beat Jim Mikel's 8.93/154 in the "Hop Cap" Monza. This put him into another final with Glidden. Unfortunately for Andy, the results were the same, with Bob's 8.54/160 getting the win over the Firebird's 8.74/155.70. The car really improved at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Andy ran 8.53/157.34 to qualify #4. In the first round, his 8.53/157.61 beat Johnny Dowey's 8.69/153. But in round two, a sleepy 8.52/157.34 lost to Bill Jenkins' 8.65/155. The Maskin and Mannarino team continued to improve at Seattle, where Andy qualified #3 with an 8.45/157.34. An even better 8.44/157 beat Satmary's 8.55 in round one. The car stayed consistent with an 8.46/158.17 in round two that downed Gordie Rivera's 8.59/155. He came up against Glidden in the semifinals, and Glidden had been running 8.3s. Andy took a chance on the tree and fouled away an 8.440/158.45, which were Andy's best NHRA national event times. He had to do it as Bob won with an 8.32/160. He got some payback at Fremont's Winston Challenge race, where he actually beat Glidden in the final.

Notes: Musi ran 8.52/159.29 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He improved to 8.50/159.01 in the first round, to beat Gene Fasching's 8.75/154. In round two, he improved to 8.47/160.71 to beat a fouling Lee Shepherd at 8.42/161. In the semifinal, a consistent 8.50/158.17 took out Bob Ingles' 8.61/158. He faced off against Bob Glidden in the final, and despite running 8.52/159.57, he lost to the Ford's strong 8.38/161. It was still a great showing for the mostly match racer at an NHRA national event. After that showing, he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where once again he impressed. An 8.44/160.71 qualified #4. Once again, he made his way to the final. In round one, Paul Gentilozzi fouled against him, and Musi advanced with an 8.50/159.57. A second-round 8.45/160.42 covered John Hagen's 8.55/160. He beat Shepherd fair and square in the semifinals, with his 8.44/161.00 beating the Texas Camaro's 8.48/157. This time he faced off against Frank Iaconio in the final. Frank had been running just a little quicker in eliminations, and Pat gambled on the tree and lost. His fouling 8.50/159.85 finished runner-up to Iaconio's 8.39/161. He returned to his match racing roots until the end of April when he went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and after runner-up finishes in the first two NHRA events, Musi must have been disappointed when his 8.63 (fourth alternate) failed to qualify. He did much better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals held at the end of May. It was another eight-car show, but this time his 8.51/160.42 qualified #5. That was good; what was bad was that he had to run low qualifier Shepherd in the opening round. Musi pushed the tree too hard and fouled away an 8.63 while Lee advanced with an 8.44. Pat switched from this car to the Palmer Bros. Camaro starting at Indy.

Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154.

Notes: Nicholson ran this Mustang after he crashed the Fairmont at a match race. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #12 with an 8.79. An opening round 8.84/150.50 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.89/148 and in the second round his 8.82/152.80 advanced when Jim Kinnett fouled. Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Camaro, faced "Dyno in the semifinals. Don slowed to 8.89/149.00 in a loss to Lombardo's 8.80/154. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals held at the end of June. A 9.31/144.69 qualified #5 in the eight-car field forcing Nicholson to run low qualifier, Bob Glidden in the first round. Nicholson tried hard in their race, but his 9.44/139.10 finished well behind Glidden's 9.12/141. A week later (July 8), he was at Suffolk Raceway for the NHRA Division 2 race. Don set Low ET at 8.51 and lasted until the final where he lost to Frank Iaconio. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Nicholson qualified #8 with an 8.72, and he beat Ronnie Manchester in the first round. In round two he improved slightly, to an 8.71 to beat Lombardo. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Glidden in the semifinals. One of his better runs came at the US Pro Stock Open at Maryland International. Don first beat Carlton Phillips with an 8.72 and in the second round his 8.70 beat Lombardo's 8.80. He went up against low qualifier, Glidden in the semifinals and "Dyno" caught a great light that saw his 8.68 beat Bob's quicker 8.56. Nicholson wrapped it up by beating Iaconio in the final. Byron Raceway held a Funny Car show that included a best of three match race between Nicholson and Glidden. The cars were said to be legal weight, but the times turned seemed suspect. Don won all three races, running times of 8.43,8.36 and 8.34 as Glidden was right there with an 8.36 best. Early in August, Nicholson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was another eight-car show and Don qualified #3 with an 8.57/157.34. An 8.62 in the first round, beat Canadian, Alban Gauthier's 8.72, but in the semifinals he fouled against Glidden. At Beech Bend, for the NHRA Division 3 final, Don set Low ET at 8.71, but the Mustang broke in the final against Joe Satmary. Shortly after this the car was destroyed in a crash at Dragway 42 during a match race.

Notes: Runner-up at the 1980 Winternationals, setting a new record. Photo from 1980 US Nationals. Kevin finished 4th in NHRA points in 1980, his best finish. Unfortunately, Kevin did not race in 1981 and did not get to show the big number 4 on his car. | Kevin had his best year in Pro Stock in '80. He started the year at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed 8.492/161.57 (new NHRA speed record). Kevin beat a fouling Bill Jenkins in the first round, with an 8.62/157.34, and in the second round, Randy Humphrey also fouled against him. Rotty must have had everyone scared because, in the semifinals, Frank Iaconio was the third straight driver to foul against him. He met up with Lee Shepherd in the final, and unfortunately for Kevin, his Camaro broke a frame mount, giving Shepherd a solo for the victory. He was going to race at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but it was rain-delayed, and he was unable to make the rain date. He continued to impress by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 8.490/161.00. He beat Don Nicholson in the first round, before losing to Bob Glidden in round two. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge, Kevin made it all the way to the final before losing to Shepherd's 8.60/155 with an 8.63/154.73. He won the Divisional race at Beeline, stopping a fouling Gordie Rivera in the final with an 8.87. Another runner-up finish to Shepherd came at the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. An 8.58/157.61 was no match for Lee's 8.42/156 on this day. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. Rotty qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.58/157. He lost to low qualifier Brad Yuill in the first round. He was back at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 27. An 8.49/161.00 qualified third in the eight-car show. A first-round 8.54/158.17 beat Sonny Ray, but he came up against Shepherd in the semifinals, and his 8.57/159.57 lost to Lee's 8.54/158. It didn't seem to matter which Division he raced in; he was tough. In May, Kevin was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. It was another eight-car field, and his 8.50/158.17 qualified #1. He went on to win by beating Larry Johnson in the first round, with an 8.55/157.06 and an 8.53/157.61 beat Ken Dondero in Dick Landy's Omni in the semifinals. Rotty took all the awards in the final when he beat Brad Yuill with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.48/158.73. He slipped a bit in qualifying for the NHRA Springnationals when his 8.73/155.44 got the #8 spot in the field. In the first two rounds, he got around Don Coonce and Jim Kinnett before losing to Shepherd's 8.58 in the semifinals with an 8.70. Did Kevin run 8.43 somewhere this year? His NHRA national event bests were the 8.490 at Gainesville and 161.57 at the Winternationals.

Notes: Also 8.47/159 at 1980 Cajuns. If it weren't for Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd's dominant performance, Frank would have easily been the 1980 Pro Stock World Champion. He still ran really well but was just a tick behind the performances of those two. He started the NHRA tour by qualifying third with an 8.51/161.57 at the Winternationals and lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against Kevin Rotty. Frank ran well at the Gatornationals, where he qualified #6. He beat Lee Edwards in the first round, with an 8.52, but he fouled against Shepherd. He stopped off at Capitol Raceway for the Spring Pro Stock Championships. Fourteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Frank set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.54/161.00. A first-round 8.57/159.81 beat Jim Cook's 8.89. Another 8.54 at 157.98 beat Larry Lombardo in the semifinals. He was to face Carlton Phillips in the final, but it was rained out. The next NHRA national event was the Cajun Nationals on April 27. It was only an eight-car show, and Iaconio qualified #2 with an 8.46/161.21. (Top Speed). An opening round 8.50/157.61 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.67/157. In the semifinal, he stopped Bill Jenkins with an 8.47/159. In the final, he met Shepherd. A quicker run of 8.55/145.86 lost to Lee's 8.60/159. He won the Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4. Frank qualified #1 with an 8.55/158.73 and then ran 8.58/157.34 to beat Bob Ingles' 8.75/155. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with an 8.51/158.73 over "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 8.73/155. A final round 8.53/153.45 beat Jenkins' 8.73/157. He then went to Richmond for an eight-car show. Ingles' 8.73 fell to Frank's 8.55 in the first round, but in the semifinals, his Camaro broke and slowed to 9.01 against eventual winner Lombardo's 8.64. Frank qualified #3 with an 8.63/156.79 at the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Brad Yuill and Jenkins in the first two rounds before losing to Glidden's 8.53/154 in the semifinals with an 8.60/156.52. I'm not sure if he failed to qualify or just skipped running the Mile High Nationals, but he wasn't in the field. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, he qualified #3 again, behind those "other two guys" with an 8.52/157.61. He beat Johnny Downey with an 8.56/157.69, and in the second round, another 8.56/157.89 beat Andy Mannarino. In the semi's, Glidden ran an 8.50/158 to trailer the Camaro's 8.60/157.06. Frank won the Division 1 race at Maple Grove, setting Low ET at 8.57 and beating Jenkins again in the final with an 8.58/156.52, dropping the "Grump's" 8.77/153. Jenkins returned the favor at the Division 1 race at Maryland, where Bill beat Frank in the final. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where an 8.59/157.06 qualified #3 in the eight-car show. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, with an 8.63/156.52, but a semifinal run of 8.60/157.61 failed to win against Shepherd's 8.41/158. At the Division 1 final at New England on August 17, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.53/157.61 in qualifying #1. A first-round 8.60/157.61 advanced when Jenkins fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.57/157.06 beat Doug Noblet. A final round 8.58/157.61 beat Ingles' 8.79/150. He took his customary third spot in qualifying with an 8.52/160.71 at the US Nationals. Again he ran well until he met up with Glidden in the semifinal, and a good 8.53/160.42 lost to Bob's 8.46/160. At Seattle for the Fallnationals, Lee didn't run as well as he normally did, and as a result, Frank's 8.45/159.01 qualified #2 behind Glidden's 8.35. Frank worked his way through the field until he met up with Shepherd in the semifinal and fouled out, giving Lee a free ride into the final. At the World Finals, he was back in #3 in qualifying with an 8.56/159.01, but this time, he made it into the final against Glidden. A final round 8.56/159.29, lost to a championship-hungry Glidden who won with an 8.42/159.85.

Notes: Bob qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.62/157.06. In the first round, he ran another 8.62 at 158.17 to beat Terry Sherrill's 8.65/157. In the second round, he defeated Butch Leal's 8.68/156 with an 8.60/158.45. He ran well in the semi-final, but his 8.61/158.17 was no match for Pat Musi's 8.50/158. He qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.554/157.61. In the opening round, he improved to 8.54/159.01 to beat Andy Mannarino's 8.57/155. He fouled away an 8.59/157.89 in round two against Bob Glidden, who advanced with an 8.48/160. Bob got quicker and quicker throughout the season, finally hitting 8.438 at the World Finals and 160.14 at Fremont. Ingles qualified #9 at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals with an 8.44/160.14. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. As expected, Shepherd's 8.33/161 defeated ingle's 8.46/160.14. He then went to OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, where his 8.438/159.57 qualified #7. He slept in the opening round, and his 8.51/158.73 lost to Gary Hansen's 8.65/156. Bob finished #9 in NHRA championship points.

Notes: Yuill qualified #6 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with an 8.46/158.29. His 8.51/158.73 beat Gene Fasching's 8.70/156 in round one. In round two, his 8.59/158.17 fell to Lee Shepherd's 8.46/159. On May 9, Mark was at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.64/157.06. In the opening round, he improved to 8.60/157.34 to beat a fouling Butch Leal. Another 8.60/158.45 advanced in the semifinal when Terry Sherrill fouled against him. He faced Harry Scribner in the final, and Harry had just set Low ET in his semifinal win with an 8.59. But Mark ran his third straight 8.60 at 159.01 to get the victory over Harry's slowing 8.91/133. Mark was at Baton Rouge later in May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 8.59 best failed to qualify. Western Regional Champion 1981. Defeated Bob Glidden in Round 2 of the OCIR World Finals at 8.49/158.17 and made it to the semis. Ran a lot of 8.40s and 8.50s this year. Best times of 8.447 at the Finals and 161.00 at the Winters.

Notes: The last car SRD built for Jenkins. Bill returned to driving after a three-year layoff. Confirmed 8.51/158 at Gainesville 3/80. Bill started his '80 season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.63/157.06. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kevin Rotty. Jenkins gambled on the tree and lost, fouling away an 8.65/156.52, while Rotty advanced with an 8.62/157. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an impressive 8.51 behind Bob Glidden and Lee Shepherd. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Coonce in the first round. He ran 8.60/157.61 to qualify on the "bump" for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. It was a tough eight-car show. He picked up slightly to an 8.59/156.79 in the first round, to beat Larry Johnson's late 8.58/157. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 8.82/139.53 in a loss to Frank Iaconio's 8.47/159. On May 4th, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. There, his 8.61/155.97 qualified #2 behind Iaconio's 8.55. These two would work their way to the final. Jenkins' 9.00/153.32 in the first round, beat Don Campanello's Arrow, while an 8.83/155.44 in the semifinals beat former driver Larry Lombardo's quicker 8.72/155. Facing Iaconio in the final was gonna be tough as Frank had run 8.58 and 8.51. Sure enough, Bill ran his best of eliminations at 8.73/157.06, but it was good for the runner-up spot as Frank took the victory with an 8.53/153. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Bill qualified #7 with an 8.73/153.84. He beat Morris Johnson's Vega in the first round, before losing to Iaconio in round two. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maryland International, stopping Iaconio in the final. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA circuit for the Summernationals. Jenkins qualified #8 with an 8.65/155.17. He ran 8.68/155.97 in the first round, over Coonce, but an 8.67/156.25 in round two could not beat his opponent's 8.64/157. He then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open, where he finished runner-up to Shepherd at the eight-car show. Another runner-up finish came at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. His 8.77/153.58 in the final lost to Iaconio's 8.58/156. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 9th. It was an eight-car field, and Bill's 8.74/154.63 qualified on the "bump." The race was postponed by rain, and Bill didn't return. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.72 qualified #7. He lost to Jim Kinnett's Volare in the first round. The NHRA Division 1 final was held at New England on August 17. Jenkins qualified #5 for the show with an 8.74/154.37. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio, who Bill had been having a tough time getting around. Bill took a shot and fouled, slowing to 9.01 while Frank advanced with an 8.60/157. Things went well at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Bill ran 8.62/155.44 to qualify #8. A first-round 8.68/155.17 beat Roy Hill's 8.74/158, and in round two, he showed he could still drive as his holeshot-aided 8.65/155.17 beat Andy Mannarino's quicker 8.52/157. Bill's fun came to an end in the semifinals, where eventual winner Shepherd ran 8.54/158 to beat his 8.61/155.44.

Notes: Started the year without Lambeck was with him by Indy. Also ran 157.89 at Sacramento. | Humphrey qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with his 8.72/154.10. In the first round, an off-pace 9.62/101.23 lost to Joe Satmary's 8.72/156. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He got a single in the opening round, but in round two, his 8.66 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.61. Humphrey qualified #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with an 8.67/156.25. An opening round 8.88/151 beat Ronnie Sox's close 8.89/154, but in round two, Randy fouled away an 8.73/154.63 against Kevin Rotty's 8.67/156. At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, an 8.55/156.25 qualified #4, but the Volare broke in the first round, and slowed to 11.31/79.22 in a loss to Larry Johnson's 8.72/154. Randy ran 8.46/159.01 at Fremont WWCS in 4/79 to set a new national ET record.

Notes: Lee Shepherd returned to Pro Stock in 78 after taking 77 off; he raced Modified that year. The Reher-Morrison team really picked up its pace in '78. While the team didn't run the Winter meets, they were at Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Lee qualified #11 with an 8.70/157. In the first round, opponent Kevin Rotty had his brakes fail, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. Shepherd advanced with an 8.82/155. In the second round, he fell off to a 9.31/116 loss to Warren Johnson's 8.71/156. Later that month, they really opened some eyes at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. Shepherd ran over 160 on three runs, making him the first NHRA legal Pro Stock car to run over 160. His best speed of 160.71 was a new NHRA record. Lee went on to win the race. Then at the next Division 4 race at Green Valley Raceway, the team ran the first NHRA legal 8.4. Shepherd qualified #1 with an 8.48 and then ran 8.53, 8.50, and a final round 8.54 to win that race too. He was runner-up to Johnson at the NHRA Division 5 race at Pueblo Motorsports Park, and on April 30, he was runner-up again, this time to Bob Glidden at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 8.71 in the final lost to Bob's 8.65. The team's next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Lee qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.80/152.54. A first-round 8.77 (Low ET) at 152.28 beat Shelby Jester, but his transmission let go in round two, and he lost to eventual winner Sonny Bryant. He picked up his third straight Division 4 race when he won at Houston. He set Low ET at 8.74, and a final round 8.79/154.10 (Top Speed) beat Bobby Marriott. The next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Shepherd qualified #2 with an 8.67/159.30 (Top Speed). He beat Jim Feurer in the first round, with an 8.73/152.02. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.96 when Jerry Haas lost a wheel on the line. In the final, he faced Jester. It was no contest as Lee won with an 8.69 over Shelby's 9.07. The following week (June 11), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Lee's 8.69/154.90 qualified #3, but he was late off the line in round one, and his 8.83/152.28 lost to Dempsey Hardy's 8.86/153. He won the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway on June 18. An 8.83 (Low ET) at 152 qualified #1 and a first-round 8.84/152 advanced when Marriott fouled against him. In the semifinals, Jester fouled, and Lee's 8.83/153 (Top Speed) moved into the final. There, his 8.86/152 got the win over Jerry Janke. Another win on the AHRA Grand American circuit came at Springfield International on July 4 for the Ozark Nationals. Don Nicholson made a surprise appearance, hoping to stop Shepherd's dominance of the AHRA events. "Dyno" looked good in qualifying, running 8.83 for the pole. Shepherd was back in second with a distant 9.03/144.92. Lee's 8.98/147 advanced when Ken Hilger fouled in the first round. He improved to 8.94/149 in the semifinals to beat Janke's 9.16/143. This set up a final-round showdown with Nicholson. Don had the edge on paper as he had run 8.89 and 8.87 to reach the final. But in the final, Lee ran his best of the weekend, and Don ran his worst. Shepherd's 8.90/150.57 got the victory over "Dyno's" 8.91/152. Janke was Lee's final round victim at Riverside for the fourth NHRA Division 4 race. Lee's final round 8.78/147.81 was too much for Jerry's 8.94/141. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team was using a 5-speed transmission at this race. An 8.66/156.79 qualified #3, but Mark Yuill surprised the team in the first round, with an 8.67/157 that beat Lee's 8.76/152.80. Like many other Pro Stock teams, they then went to Maryland International for the US Pro Stock Open. It was an eight-car show, and Lee set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round where his 8.60/155.44 beat Warren Johnson's 8.75 at the same speed. Larry Lombardo gambled on the tree in the semifinal and won as his 8.79 beat Shepherd's quicker 8.67. Shortly after that (July 22), these same two would meet in the final at the fourth NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove. Lee had set Low ET during qualifying at 8.62. He ran 8.76 to beat James Cook in the opening round, and an 8.70/152.54 in the semifinal defeated Frank Iaconio's 8.80/153. Once again, Larry got the jump in the final, and his 8.76/154 nosed out Shepherd's 8.72/153.58 for the victory. Also ran 8.60 and 8.61 at LaPlace, LA.

Notes: Frank won the 1979 NHRA Fallnationals on an 8.49/157.06 to 8.47 holeshot over Bob Glidden in the quickest Pro Stock race ever at the time. - CompetitionPlus. Also, it ran 160.14. | This is the year that Frank Iaconio broke out as the quickest of the Chevy Pro Stock contingent. He didn't run at Pomona, but at the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with an 8.58/157.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Yuill's 8.76/153 in the first round, with an off-pace 8.83/146.10. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, stopping Larry Lombardo in the final. Frank also didn't run at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 again at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.68/155.70, and he beat Ronnie Sox with an 8.77/153.84, and an 8.79/154.10 in round two beat Kevin Rotty before fouling away an 8.84/150.25 against eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.66/157 in the semifinals. Another NHRA Division 1 race win came on June 24 at Maryland International. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and Frank's 8.64/154.63 got a close victory over Lombardo's 8.65/156. He skipped going to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. On July 8, Iaconio went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race and came away with another win, stopping "Dyno" Don Nicholson in the final. The following week (July 15), things went really well for Frank at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He picked up his second career NHRA Pro Stock title. He qualified #2 behind Glidden, and these two would work their way to the final. Frank started by beating Sox with an 8.62. His 8.58 took out Lee Shepherd in round two, and a semifinal 8.61 beat Wally Booth. He had Bob concerned enough in the final that Bob fouled, and Iaconio ran 8.60/156.52 for the victory. Nicholson stopped Iaconio in the final at Maryland International's US Pro Stock Open, but Frank was strong there, running low 8.7's. He then traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.57/157.34 qualified #2 behind that Arrow from Whiteland, Indiana. It would come down to another final round showdown between these two. Frank had run 8.60 and 8.48 to beat Ronnie Manchester and Lombardo to reach the final. Glidden had lane choice with an 8.46 in his semifinal win. Frank ran a good 8.53, but it wasn't enough as Glidden won with an 8.47. He took some comfort by winning the fourth NHRA Division One race at Maple Grove shortly after that. He beat surprise finalist Larry Sengstack. He also won the final Division One race held in New England. There he also set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.64/155.97. His next stop was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Frank's 8.58/160.42 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Glidden's 8.58/158. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Booth. But in round two, he was upset by Lombardo. Larry's 8.67 beat his slightly quicker 8.66. That was a tough loss for Iaconio. He made up for it at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Once again, he qualified #2 with his 8.48/157.89 following Bob's 8.46/159. A first-round 8.54/151.00 stopped Lee Hunter, and in the second round, his 8.52/156.79 beat Lee Shepherd's 8.64/155. In the semifinals, he quickened his pace to 8.48/157.06 to put Joe Satmary's 8.68/154 Camaro on the trailer. Glidden had run just a tick quicker in his semifinal race, an 8.47/157. So the final was close. And was it ever! Frank got out ever so slightly on the Mopar, and his 8.49/157.06 held on for the victory over Bob's closing in 8.47/158.

Notes: Gauthier failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran really well at Cayuga on May 17 for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He reached the final against Frank Iaconio. But his 8.62/158.45 finished runner-up to Frank's 8.45/160. Alban qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July with an 8.57/159.29. He slowed to an 8.75/155.17 in round one, that lost to Mark Yuill's 8.54/158. NHRA held its next Eastern Regional race at Maple Grove on August 2, and Gauthier was there. His 8.60 qualified #5 and gave him the honor of running low qualifier, Iaconio, in the first round. Alban gave it a good shot, but his 8.58/159.01 finished second best to Frank's 8.53/158. The following week(August 9), he was at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran a great 8.48/162.45 to qualify #6 in the eight-car show. This time he lost to the eventual winner Lee Shepherd, in the opening round, but his booming 162 held up for the Top Speed of the event honors. 37 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Alban ran 8.57/160.42 to get the #11 spot in the field. He faced Bob Glidden in the first round, and had the car break on the line. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. It was a great showing for the Canadian.

Notes: 1978 photo. | This was the calm before the storm. The Reher-Morrison team ran well in '79, but nothing forecast just how well they would do in '80. Driver Lee Shepherd started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.61/157.34. An opening round 8.65/155.97 advanced over a fouling Gordie Rivera, but in round two the Camaro broke and slowed to 9.03 in a loss to Joe Satmary. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Lee's 8.62/156.25 qualified #4. But the team was unable to show for the first-round race against Don Campanello. Shepherd won the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace, stopping Shelby Jester in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lee qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he got a solo run in the first round. In the semifinals, he beat Wally Booth's 8.81 AMC effort with an 8.72/154. This put Shepherd into the finals against Bob Glidden (a forecast of the next two seasons). Shepherd tried hard with an 8.71/155.44, but few could keep up with Glidden in '79 and Bob's 8.56 at a shutting off,149 got the victory. The team then stopped off at St. Louis on June 3 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Lee reset both ends of the AHRA record during qualifying with an 8.59/159.30. He then ran 8.65 and 8.73 to reach the final. His final round opponent was Bobby Marriott and Lee's 8.69 defeated Marriott's 8.86 for the victory. A week later (June 10), they were at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.71/154.63 qualified #5. In round one Shepherd's 8.85/152.02 beat Campanello's 8.87/153, but in round two an 8.82/153.06 was no match for eventual winner Glidden's 8.66/152. Alamo Dragway was the next stop for the AHRA Nationals. The team dominated. Lee qualified #1 with an 8.65/156.80, and he set Low ET and Top Speed to the final with an 8.61/159.56 that beat Marriott's 8.71. They did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shepherd was disappointed when the Camaro broke in the final against Mike Oppen at the Amarillo Division 4 race.

Notes: Don was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran good in qualifying, hitting an 8.53/159.29 for the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Harry Scribner. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #7. This time with an 8.48/158.45. But he lost early. The next race was Don's last NHRA event for a while. It was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 26. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with an 8.52, beating John Hagen in the first round. In the semifinals, he was up against Frank Iaconio. Frank beat Don, but it was a scary ride for Nicholson when a front wheel came off in the speed traps. "Dyno" showed that he could still drive a race car when he kept the Mustang upright and brought it to a safe stop. Shortly after this, he sold his Pro Stock operation to Harold Denton.

Notes: Glidden debuted this car at Edgewater on July 9 for the NHRA Division 3 Points race. The unique machine replaced Bob's Pinto, in which he began the season. It was a promising debut, as he scored 8.76/152.54 to qualify #2 behind Joe Satmary's 8.75/154. An improved 8.66/154.90 in the opening round of eliminations beat Phil Gingerich, while a semifinal 8.68/153.58 handled Dave Avery. Bob faced Satmary in the final, and his 8.65 (Low ET) at 154.10 beat Joe's 8.75/153. A week later (July 16), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he scored his sixteenth NHRA National Event victory. He qualified #1 with an 8.62/154.90 and then ran 8.58/148.02 in the first round to beat Dempsey Hardy's 8.80/153. An 8.535 (Low ET) in round two at 152.54 beat Richie Zul's 8.66/156. That was the quickest side-by-side race in history at that point. An 8.55/149.00 in the semifinals beat Wally Booth's 8.70/154. In the final, he met up with Bill Jenkins' Monza, driven by Larry Lombardo. Bob got the win with an 8.55/154.37 over Larry's 8.71/155. It was also interesting to note that this was his tenth straight NHRA final-round appearance. That was followed by a trip to Maryland International for its US Pro Stock Open event. It was an eight-car show, and Glidden's 8.66 qualified #1. An even better 8.64 in round one beat Satmary's 8.84, but Zul cut a great light in the semifinals, and his 8.80 hung on to win over Bob's quicker 8.66. On July 30, Glidden went to the final NHRA Division Two race at Miami-Hollywood. His 8.69/152.80 advanced in the opening round when Art Gravatt fouled. A semifinal 8.71/153.58 beat Jim Kinnett's 8.95/154. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and Bob made winning look easy as he set Low ET with an 8.65/154.32, scoring the victory over Hardy's 8.84/154. Then it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Of course, he qualified #1, this time with an 8.585 at only 148.51. The field was short a car, so Bob got the "odd-lot" solo and ran another 8.58 at only 151.26 to advance. Frank Iaconio's 8.73/154 fell to the Fairmont's 8.55 at only 149. He faced Larry Lombardo, driving Bill Jenkins' Monza in the final. "Grumpy" had been taking shots at Bob for his new Fairmont, calling it down. So Glidden really enjoyed beating Larry's 8.72/166 in the final, with another 8.550 (Low ET) at a shutting-off way early 144.46! He did that just to bug Jenkins a bit. By now, the big white "boxcar" was bugging everyone as it was proving itself unbeatable. His next stop came at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.68. Round one saw his 8.72/155.70 beat Joe Gouger's 9.06/142. Warren Johnson fouled away an 8.76/154 against him in round two, and Bob advanced with an 8.72/157.61 (Top Speed). He made like a bracket racer in the semifinals, where he ran his third straight 8.72 (at 156.52) to beat Satmary's 8.80/154. Once again, he faced Lombardo in the final, and once again, the results were the same. Bob's 8.74/152.54 got the victory over Larry's far behind 8.89/153. The domination continued at the final NHRA Division Three race at Beech Bend. Bob ran 8.68/158.17 (Top Speed) and 8.64/168.17 to beat Avery and Gouger in eliminations. He went up against Satmary in the final. Joe took a chance and fouled away an 8.74/154, while Glidden notched another win with his 8.64 at only 145.39. Before Indy, Glidden was awarded the "Pro Stock Driver of the Year" by Car Craft Magazine. Bob was the low qualifier at Indy at 8.622/157.61, finally showing some top end. he beat a fouling Dempsey Hardy in round one, 8.648/153.84 to 8.78/154. In round two, Bob took out Mark Yuill, 8.606/154.37 to 8.81/154. Frank Iaconio gave it a good shot against Bob in the semis but was a tenth behind his Low ET pass of 8.600/153.84 to 8.70/155. In the final, Joe Satmary's 8.77/155 finished more than two car lengths back. In Seattle, Bob ran even quicker. He qualified #1 at 8.557/155.70. In round one, his 8.52/154.34 beat Brad Yuill's 8.75 (speed unknown). Bob ran 8.52/157.34 to beat Wally Booth's 8.67/153 in round two. Lee Shepherd fouled against him in the semis, but Bob ran 8.555/152.54 to Lee's 8.70/154 anyway. In the final, Bob set the Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet at 8.499/158.52 to beat Frank Iaconio's game 8.57/155. Bob wrapped up his dream season at Ontario for the World Finals. An 8.556/156.79 was the low qualifier, and he commenced race day with an 8.610/153.32 to 8.78/154 win over Andy Mannarino. An 8.635/156.25 took out Warren Johnson's 8.82/155 in round two, and an 8.587/157.06 beat Wally Booth's off-pace pas in the semis. That speed tied for Top Speed of the Meet, which was awarded to Mark Yuill, who had run the number in qualifying. In the final, Bob again defeated Larry Lombardo, 8.617/156.25 to 8.74/155. What a season! Every other Pro Stock racer was scared of this car. Bob was running 8.4s while shutting down early! That was unheard of. People were speculating that if he ran it out the back door, it would have run over 160. Bob won the NHRA Championship.

Notes: Set National Record ET at Fallnationals at 8.50. Low qualifier at World Finals at 8.61. Ran 8.550/157 at World Finals, defeating newly crowned world champion Don Nicholson in the final. Ran 8.72 at Pomona, 8.81 at Gainesville, 8.72 at Columbus, 8.64 at Englishtown, 8.63 at Indy, and 8.55 at Beech Bend. | Bob started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 8.72/156.52 to qualify #3. He beat Mark Yuill in the first round, and in round two, he advanced when Randy Humphrey fouled. In the semifinals, he faced low qualifier Don Nicholson. "Dyno" grabbed a slight holeshot, and his 8.73/156 held on for the win over Bob's slightly quicker 8.72/157.89. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with an 8.81. He lasted until the second round, where the Pinto broke on its burnout, giving Ken Dondero a solo into the semifinals. On April 24, he won the NHRA Division 3 race at Indianapolis. He stopped Wally Booth in the final with an 8.67/155.44 (Low ET and Top Speed). Glidden won the next Division 3 race held at Edgewater as well. He qualified #1 with an 8.68 and set Low ET and Top Speed with an 8.67/157.89. He beat Joe Satmary in the final. NHRA held its second annual Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, and once again, Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.62/155.70. He got the "odd-lot" single in the first round and ran 8.70/156.79 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, an 8.64/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio, setting up a final-round meeting with Booth's AMC. In the final, Bob's 8.65/156.52 easily covered Wally's 8.73/153. It was his first NHRA National event win since the '76 Winternationals. A week after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.72 qualified #5, but he lost early. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Glidden just barely out-qualified Nicholson for the pole as both ran 8.64. Glidden beat Warren Johnson in round one, with an 8.68/156, but in round two, he had problems and slowed to 9.08/121 in a loss to Larry Lombardo's 8.66/156 in Bill Jenkins' Monza. He ended July with a win at the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.69/155 that beat Satmary's Camaro at 8.91/152. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.58/156.79. An opening round 8.65 beat Iaconio's 8.79, and in the semifinals, he beat Booth's 8.68/153 with an 8.63/155.70. He faced Lombardo in the final. Larry had run a quicker 8.62 in his semifinal race, so it was close. But the Monza had problems in the final and slowed to 10.12/93 while Glidden chalked up another victory with an 8.63/156.52. Shortly after that (August 21), he was at Beech Bend for the final NHRA Division Three race. Bob set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.55/157.34. He worked his way into the final, where he faced Dave Avery. It wasn't much of a contest as Bob's 8.69/154.90 easily took the victory over Dave's 9.36/148. Then came the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Bob wasn't pleased with this race during qualifying. He watched as Nicholson unloaded and proceeded to run an 8.61 with his "good" engine and then come back on Saturday to run 8.63 with a backup! Glidden did not want to be second. He made runs of 8.80, 8.72, 8.88, and finally, 8.67. But that was the closest he, or anyone else, could get to "Dyno." On race day, an opening-round 8.84/149 topped Bob ingles' 9.05/151. In round two, he improved to 8.63/156 to beat Richie Zul's 9.25/153. Another strong pass of 8.65/156.79 beat Frank Iaconio's 8.89/152 in the semis. That set up an all-Ford final with "Dyno." Don's winning semifinal time had been 8.72/155, so Bob now looked to have the edge. But in the final, the Pinto broke just off the line, slowing to 13.99, while Nicholson's 8.73 picked up the victory. We need validation of the third digit of the 8.50 at Seattle.

Notes: Ran AHRA and NHRA Division 4. Janke started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 9.00/147 qualified #5. This set up a first-round match with low qualifier Sonny Bryant. Sonny's 8.93/153 sent Jerry's 9.10/149 packing for home. Jerry was at Tulsa early in May for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 9.13/146.34. His 9.15/144.69 beat Jim Steen in the first round, but another 9.15 at 148.26 in the semifinals lost to Warren Johnson's 8.80/154. On June 4, Jerry was credited with an 8.50/152.55 in qualifying #1 at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. The car was rarely an eight-second runner, so the half-second pick-up is debatable. In the opening round, he beat Rich Thomas with a 9.10/154.38, but in the semifinals, he lost a rear wheel while doing his burnout preparing to race Lee Shepherd. Two weeks later (June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, where he ran 8.96/152 to qualify #2 behind Shepherd's 8.83 for the AHRA Nationals. A first-round 9.03/151 beat Kenny Hilger while in the semifinals, his 9.04/150 beat Phil Nichols' 9.22/145. Unfortunately, he faced Shepherd in the final, and the fellow Texas Camaro took the win. The next AHRA race was the Ozark Nationals held on July 4. Jerry qualified #4 with a 9.06/147.54 and a 9.21/145.89 beat Jerry Haas' 9.22/147 in the first round. Shepherd stopped him again in the semifinals, running an 8.94/149 to beat Janke's 9.16/143. Shortly after that, he was at Riverside for the fourth NHRA Division 4 race. He reached the final only to come up against Shepherd again, and despite running a good 8.94/141.67, he lost to Lee's 8.78/147.
