Notes: Also 8.87 and 8.91 at 73 Supernationals and 8.89 at 154.96 at 73 World Finals. The team had a Lenco this year from Pomona on! Ran 8.99 at Columbus. | Gapp started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 and in the first round beat Mike Fons. In round two he beat Bob Lambeck, but in the semifinals, he lost to Melvin Yow. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified first with a 9.02-149.50. Gapp appeared to be on his way to his first win running 9.05 in the first round, another 9.05-148.76 in round two over Bob Glidden, and yet another 9.05-148 in the semifinals over Ronnie Sox. But in the final, he faced Don Nicholson's similar Pinto that had also been running 9.0's. Don left first and took the victory with a 9.04-150 over Gapp's slightly quicker 9.03-149.00.

Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking that it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder was Glidden's 8.56-159.57 (top speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83-154 in the first round. In round two, he picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70-156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal, Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83-156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive though his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other P/S drivers. Bob qualified first at 8.52-159.57 (top speed). A first round 8.58 beat Nicholson while in round two his 8.55-149 advanced when Satmary fouled. In the semifinals, he set low ET with an 8.48-150 over Mark Yuill. In the final, it was good to see long time P/S campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53-147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75-156 attempt. Things didn't change at all by the time the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again Glidden headed the P/S qualifiers with an 8.54-158.45 (low ET and top speed). It was an eight car show and Bob breezed past the first round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61-151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together but soon Bob took control and his 8.59-149 beat Lee's 8.71-155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other P/S racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got top speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (low ET) was tops in qualifying and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61-157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76-151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set low ET and top speed in qualifying first with a 9.08-148.27. A 9.12-141.73 beat Nicholson in the first round but in the semifinals, he fouled against Randy Humphrey. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. There, he qualified first with a 8.52 then set low ET and top speed at 8.51-160.14 on his way to a final round meeting with Iaconio. In the final, Bob's Arrow broke and Frank got the victory with an 8.60-156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified first in the eight car field with a 8.49-158.17 (top speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one and in the semifinals, he set low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson who fouled. In the final he met Iaconio again and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. Byron held an interesting best of three match race in August between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34 while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again he qualified first with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set low ET in round two with an 8.56-157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58-156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71-157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61-143.50 over Larry's 8.72-154.

Notes: Ran 8.41-160.71 NRs at 80 Cajun Nationals, 8.33 NR (altitude factored) at 80 Mile High Nationals, then finally, 8.32 NR at 80 Fall Nationals. Ran 160.14 at Fall Nationals. Photo from Indy 1980. | Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden raged a war in P/S unlike any seen before in the class. Glidden started the season in his Arrow in which he had won the NHRA P/S championship the year before. It wasn't cutting it as Lee won the first two NHRA events of the season with Glidden's best showing being a runner-up at the Gatornationals. He had Don Hardy build him a new Fairmont that debuted at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified first with Low ET of the meet 8.41 at 160.71 while Shepherd qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.54 meaning that the two would meet in the first round. In that first round match-up, Lee ran another 8.54 that beat Glidden's quicker 8.49. Lee went on to win his third straight national event. Bob had to get his act together quick if he was to win another championship. He won the Division three opener at Indianapolis setting Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43-162.16 (new NHRA speed record) and then on May 4 he won the second Division three race at Edgewater setting Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying first and beating Andy Mannarino in the final with an 8.50-153.32. He made a move on Shepherd at the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.52-158.45 qualified first while Lee's 8.57 was second in the now rat powered Camaro. Bob set Low ET in the first round with an 8.49-157.61 single when Roy Hill broke on the line and after that, they both made their way to the final. In the final, Bob got his first national event win of the year with an 8.53-155.70 stopping Shepherd's 8.62-155. Another win followed on June 28 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bob qualified first with a Low ET of the meet 8.99 (Bandimere's first eight), while the Reher-Morrison Camaro was second with a 9.02. Together they mowed down the competition to meet again in the final where Bob ran another 8.99-149.50 to win over Shepherd's close 9.01-147. The Summernationals was the next national event on the schedule, and in qualifying, Glidden looked good running an 8.41-159.29 for the #1 spot. Lee was second with an 8.48-159. Once again, they ran through the field to meet in the final. Bob ran a best of 8.48 in eliminations while Lee's best was an 8.50. In the final, Shepherd ran an 8.54-158 that beat Bob's 8.53-159.29. Glidden won the NHRA Division three races at Union Grove and Beech Bend, setting Low ET at both races as well. He qualified first at the PHR Championships with an 8.59 while his nemesis ran an 8.67 for third. Both got past the first round with Glidden setting Low ET at 8.52 while beating Paul Gentilozzi. In the semifinals, Gidden and Shepherd met with the Camaro breaking at half track and Bob winning with an 8.53-158.17. Bob went on to win the event with a final round 8.58 beating Jim Kinnett. The NHRA tour traveled up to Canada for the Grandnationals where an 8.47-159.29 by Glidden was only good enough for #2 in qualifying as Shepherd got the pole. Once again the two raced through the field to meet again in the final for the fifth time this year. Unfortunately, Bob blew a trans and could only watch as Lee ran an 8.44-159 for his fifth win of the year. Bob was kicking himself after Indy for the U.S. Nationals. He had qualified first with Low ET and Top Speed at 8.43-161.29. Both he and second qualifier (8.45) worked their way to the final where Bob fouled away an 8.48-154 while Lee got his sixth win with an 8.50-159. Glidden had to do something fast and he did at the next event, the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. He qualified #1 with an 8.35-159.85 while Shepherd was unusually farther back with an 8.52-157 qualifying #4. Glidden set an 8.32 national record in the semifinal while Lee stayed in the game with an 8.44-158 beating Frank Iaconio and putting the two in yet another final round. This time, Glidden took his fourth NHRA national event win of the year with an 8.41-159.85 beating Lee's 8.51-158. This tightened up the points chase considerably but Bob was still a long shot going into the season finale. | Formerly listed best speed as 160.71 NR at Cajun Nationals 80.

Notes: Set National Record ET at Fallnationals at 8.50. Low qualifier at World Finals at 8.61. Ran 8.550, 157 at World Finals, defeating newly crowned world champion Don Nicholson in the final. Ran 8.72 at Pomona, 8.81 at Gainesville, 8.72 at Columbus, 8.64 at Englishtown, 8.63 at Indy, at 8.50 Pomona, 8.55 at Beech Bend. | Bob started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he ran 8.72-156.52 to qualify #3. He beat Mark Yuill in the first round and in round two he advanced when Randy Humphrey fouled. In the semifinals, he faced the low qualifier Don Nicholson. "Dyno" grabbed a slight holeshot and his 8.73-156 held on for the win over Bob's slightly quicker 8.72-157.89. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 8.81. He lasted until the second round where the Pinto broke on its burnout giving Ken Dondero a solo into the semifinals. On April 24, he won the NHRA Division Three race at Indianapolis. He stopped Wally Booth in the final with an 8.67-155.44 (low ET and top speed). Glidden won the next Division Three race held at Edgewater as well. He qualified first with a 8.68 and went on to set low ET and top speed with an 8.67-157.89. He beat Joe Satmary in the final. NHRA held its second annual Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge and once again Glidden qualified low in the eight car field with a 8.62-155.70. He got the "odd-lot" single in the first round and ran 8.70-156.79 (top speed). In the semifinals, an 8.64-156.79 beat Frank Iaconio setting up a final round meeting with Booth's AMC. In the final, Bob's 8.65-156.52 easily covered Wally's 8.73-153. It was his first NHRA National event win since the '76 Winternationals. A week after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. An 8.72 qualified #5 but he lost early.

Notes: Don's 9.81, 139.81 set both ends of the national record at Atco NJ WCS meet in fall of '70. The car also had Low ET at Indy Nationals with 9.90. Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11-21-70 at 10.013, 139.10 (the quickest non-Chrysler). Don had some teething problems at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan where the car appeared still in primer. He lost a rod in qualifying and fouled out in the race. In Feb, for the NHRA Winternationals, Dyno's Maverick qualified at 10.47-128.95 but lost to Don Grotheer in the first round. At the big OCIR U.S. Pro Stock Championships, Don qualified fifth with a 10.05 and went on to run a 9.93 best before losing to Bill Jenkins in the final. On Feb 22, he qualified second with a 10.12 at Irwindale for a PS race. He ran a best of 10.10-137.19 before meeting low qualifier, Dick Landy in the final. A final round 10.29-135.90 took the win when Landy fouled away a 10.24. At AHRA's second race of '70, Don ran a best of 10.12 and faced Ed Miller in the final but a missed shift cost him the race. Also in March at Rockingham for the third AHRA race, the Pro-Am, Don qualified with a 10.05-137.82 and advanced to the final with a best of 10.00 before losing to Ronnie Sox. A big win at the Northern Nationals at Fremont over Bill Bagshaw came next along with Low ET honors at 10.04-138.46. At the Super Stock nationals on May 10, Don was disqualified. On May 16 at the AHRA Frontier Grand Am Don lost in the semifinal. 10.25 was all Don could do in qualifying at the AHRA Springnationals and he lost early. Edelbrock came up with a new tunnel ram manifold for the SOHC and at the NHRA Springnationals Don's Cammer had one. A 10.23 in qualifying and a first round 10.14 didn't show much but it was the first new development for the engine in a long time. He lost to Sox in round two. At the St. Louis 1/8 mile championships Don qualified first with a 6.53 let Low ET at 6.46 and won the meet. Another big win came On July 1st at Capitol, Dyno won the meet over Ronnie Sox with outstanding times of 9.88, 9.87, 9.86 all at 139.75 and a final 9.74-140.18. In July, for the NHRA Summernationals, Dyno qualified ninth with a 10.15. At AHRA's seventh race, the New England Grand Am, on Aug 2, Don qualified first at 10.03, set an AHRA mph record at 138.46, and set Low ET and Top Speed in winning the event with a 9.88-139.53 over Ronnie Sox. On Aug 23, at York for the AHRA Summernationals Don reset the AHRA Pro Stock et and speed record to 9.78-140.62. A win at the next AHRA race at Bristol over Herb McCandless was next and his 10.07-137.19 was good for Low ET and Top Speed. A 9.90-139.31 was good for Low et and number one qualifier at the U.S. Nationals, but Arlen Vanke got him in round three. At the AHRA World Finals, he qualified first with a 10.06 and went on to a semifinal finish. Nicholson qualified fourth at the NHRA Supernationals with a 10.01-139.10 and went on to run a best of 9.96-139.96 before losing to Vanke in round three. After such a great season, the NHRA World Finals was somewhat a let down to Don as he failed to qualify due to a blown engine. Because of this car, and only this car NHRA considered banning the SOHC motor from Pro Stock competition which went down unfavorably by track owners and promoters. Also, rumors swirled wildly about Dodge picking up Don for '71.

Notes: Times from National Dragster, December 29, 1972. Car had new Lenco. Photo from 1973. Unreal times resulted from game changing transmission and cold winter weather and were a tenth quicker than Billl Jenkins best ET in the Chevy Vega that revolutionized the class and dominated during the 1972 season. However, this was an NHRA Sanctioned points race, not a match race, and the times stand as the best legal times of the calendar year.

Notes: This car replaced the almighty '72 car that was destroyed in a crash. Got a '74 nose in '74; raced until '75 maybe early '76. -- JB | A "For Sale" ad placed by Jenkins in a late '74 drag paper advertised the availability of the '73 SRD car with or without engine/driveline for a starting price of $9,000. Jenkins said if purchased complete he would deliver the car to the new owner at a local track "in competitive trim" and conforming to '75 NHRA rules. -- RT | Jenkins became the first to lose with an eight second run, 8.91 to 8.96 to Wayne Gapp. Jenkins received an invalid 8.90 time at Ontario. - DW

Notes: Dominated 1980 with 6 wins and 3 runner ups. Lost the very close championship due to a broken transmission at the World Finals. Ran 8.35-163.45 at Amarillo WCS. Was that altitude factored? Confirmed 160.42 at Englishtown 80. Need to confirm best sea level times. | Lee started the '80 season by competing at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified first in the eight car show and went on to win, beating Don Nicholson in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Lee qualified #4 with an 8.52-156.24. He beat Jim Meyer in round one and in round two his 8.59-155.97 took out Lee Hunter's Zephyr. In the semifinals, his 8.61 advanced when Bob Glidden's Arrow broke at mid-track. His final round opponent was to be Kevin Rotty but Rotty's Camaro broke so Shepherd soloed to his second NHRA National event P/S win with a 14.38. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division Four Opener on March 9. Once again the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd met in the final. This time Kevin's didn't break. Lee got the win with an 8.60-155.97 over Rotty's 8.63-154. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #2 with an 8.49-157.34. He beat Gordie Rivera in round one and in round two he beat Frank Iaconio. An 8.50 in the semifinals shut down Joe Satmary's 8.75. In the final, he faced Glidden and his Arrow. Both ran 8.51 (Lee at 156.52) with Shepherd getting the victory. The second Division Four race was at Green Valley on March 30 and Shepherd set an 8.37 NHRA record in qualifying first. His speed on the run was 161.57 (top speed). Once again the final came down to the two Camaros of Rotty and Shepherd, and once again the results were the same with Lee's 8.42-156.52 beating Kevin's 8.58-157. The Reher-Morrison team continued to dominate Division Four when they showed up at Houston for the third race. Lee ran 8.61 (low ET) at 154.37 to qualify first and then went on to win with an 8.74-155.97 that beat Sonny Ray's 8.85-152. Things didn't seem to be going so good for the team when they showed up at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight car show and when qualifying ended, Lee's best of 8.54-158.17 got the #5 spot. That put him up against low qualifier Glidden who had just switched to a Fairmont and set a track record of 8.41. Lee was off by a tenth and a half but he cut a good light in their first round race, and his 8.54-158.73 beat Bob's quicker 8.49-160. In the semifinals, his 8.56-158.17 beat Rotty's 8.57-159. That set up a final round against Frank Iaconio. Frank had lane choice due to an 8.47 in his semifinal race. Once again, Shepherd proved he could drive as his 8.60-159.01 got the win over Iaconio's 8.55-145. This was his third straight NHRA National event victory.
