Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154.

Notes: The Gapp and Roush team entered the '74 season with three cars. They had the seasoned Pinto from '73 along with a new one. Along with the Pintos, they had a Mustang II. The team was not sure how the 351 ran with the new NHRA weight break of 6.75 lbs per cubic inch, but Gapp mentioned in January that if the small cars were uncompetitive, he would build a four-door Maverick to take advantage of the 6.45 factor for cars with over a 105" wheelbase. Wayne started the season at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with an 8.92. In the first round, he beat Warren Johnson's Vega with a 9.06/149.02. An 8.94/152.02 took care of Dave Kanners' 9.03 in the AMC Hornet in round two. But in the semifinals, his 9.03/151.26 lost to fellow Pinto campaigner Bob Glidden's 8.94/153. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Gapp qualified #2 with an 8.95/151.77. A first-round 8.920/151.77 beat Kelly Chadwick's Vega at 9.36. In round two, he ran 8.99/151.00 to easily cover Bill Bagshaw's 9.22/144. A semifinal 9.00/150.75 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.22/144 to put the Pinto in the final. There he had to run Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. It was a close race with Bill's Vega barely winning with an 8.93/152, just edging the Pinto's 8.94/152.02. Gapp and Roush brought two cars to the Gatornationals, with Wayne driving the Pinto and Jack driving their new Mustang II. They qualified #1 and second with Gapp's 8.99/152.54 getting the pole. Gapp advanced past the first-round with a 9.19 when Glidden lost a transmission. But the Pinto's engine was ailing, and the car couldn't make the call for the second round. Gapp won the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in April. It was an eighth-mile track, and Wayne qualified #2 with a 5.90. He ran a 6.02/116.42 in the first round, to beat Ronnie Sox's brother, David. In the semifinals, a 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll's 6.16. In the final, he faced Roy Hill's Duster. Roy ran 6.05/117 but lost to Gapp's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 5.80/123.11. Wayne was at Rockingham on May 12 for another IHRA race, the Pro-Am Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 9.12/150.00, but he failed to reach the finals. Ran IHRA records of 5.80/123.11 on the eighth-mile in winning the IHRA Southern Nationals at Charlotte in late March 1974. It was the Pinto that set the record (not the Mustang II). There is footage of the race on YouTube. Wayne began running the four-door Maverick at NHRA Columbus in June.

Notes: The "other" AMC car. The '73 season ended positively for the Dick Maskin and Dave Kanners team. Kanners had made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Supernationals with their Hornet giving AMC its best outing in the Pro Stock class. The '74 season would see the team do very well at national events. NHRA refactored the cars to 6.45 lbs, which would also help as they shed a few pounds. It started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where Dave qualified #7 with a 9.09 in the sixteen-car field. A 9.06/148.76 in round one, beat Gordie Rivera. In round two, Kanners ran his best time of the weekend, a 9.03/149.25, but it wasn't enough to beat Wayne Gapp's 8.94/152. Things didn't go as well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 9.10/149.75 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden that saw Kanners' off pace 9.24/148.27 lose to Bob's 9.04/152. It was ironic that just before the NHRA Gatornationals, both the AMC teams of Wally Booth and the Maskin and Kanners team were released from their contracts. That all changed after the Gatornats as Booth took the win, giving AMC its first NHRA Pro Stock victory. Kanners also ran well there. He qualified #7 with a 9.07/150.75. In the first round, his 9.00/151.15 beat Bert Straus' 9.11/149. Unfortunately, the two AMC's paired up in the next round, and Booth's 9.01/152 beat Kanners' 9.05/150.75. He won over an eight-car field at Englishtown's Pro Stock Bonanza race in April. All cars were run at 6.50 lbs per cubic inch, so Dave actually had to add weight. In round one, his 9.15/148.76 beat Scott Shafiroff's 9.23/147. In the semifinal, he had a great race that saw his 8.96/151.26 beat Bill Jenkins' 9.03/148. He turned into a Vega killer in the final, as he beat his third one with an 8.95/150.50 that got the victory over Paul Blevins' 8.98/152. At the NHRA Springnationals, both AMC's qualified in the top four positions, with Booth getting the pole at 9.06/150 while Kanners qualified #4 with a 9.10/150.25. Dave fell off to 9.23/148.02 in the first round, but it was still enough to get around Kelly Chadwick's 9.31/144. But another 9.23 at 147.79 in round two lost to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 9.30/147. He was at Maple Grove for the All-American Pro-Series Opener, where he beat Mark Harrington driving the MIMI Vega in the first round, with a 9.23. In the second round, he advanced when Glidden fouled, but the AMC dropped a valve on his run, and he was unable to run in the semifinals, so Dick Landy replaced him via the "break rule."Shortly after that (June 23), he was at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division Five opener. He qualified #1 with a 9.16/148.27 (a new track record). in the opening round, his 9.24/149.50 (speed was also a new track record) defeated Jim Cooper. In the semifinal, his 9.21/148.27 beat Bill McDaniel's Pinto. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Kelly was running two tenths off the AMC's pace, and it stayed that way in the final, where Dave ran 9.19/148.76 for the victory over Chadwick's 9.42/146. The following week (June 30), he reset the NHRA 1/8 mile record to 5.82 while winning the NHRA 1/8 Mile Drags at Indiana. There he qualified #1 at 5.92. He then ran 5.82 twice and set Top Speed at 120.00 before beating Preston Honea, who fouled against him in the final. The next NHRA national event was the Summernationals held at Englishtown in July. The two AMC cars qualified side by side, with Booth getting the #6 spot and Kanners qualifying #7 with a 9.05/150. A 9.23/148.02 beat Bert Straus' 9.38/147 in round one, and a second-round 9.31 beat John Lingenfelter's 9.39. But his 9.30 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 9.14 in Bill Jenkins' Vega. The NHRA Grandnationals did not go well for the team. Dave's 9.09 qualified #10, which set up a first-round meeting between the two Hornets. Dave's 9.17 in their race lost to Booth's 9.06. More bad luck interfered at the PHR Championships. Kanners qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.06, but he broke against Bill Robertson in the opening round. Ran 9.10 at Pomona, 9.00 at Gainesville, 9.10 at Columbus, 9.06 at Englishtown, and 9.01 at Ontario.

Notes: Due to NHRA's Pro Stock wight breaks, Hill did not spend much of his time racing Pro Stock in '74 as he was running his SS/B Plymouth in Super Stock. In March, he was racing his Pro Stock car at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. The track was 1/8 mile, and it was an eight-car field in the PRO categories. Roy qualified #5, meaning he would race low qualifier Lamar Walden in Barry Setzer's Vega in the first round. After a great 5.90 in qualifying, Lamar slowed to 6.08 in the first round, and lost to Hill's 6.00/118.57. Hill's 6.06/117.95 beat Sam Carroll in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Wayne Gapp. Roy ran a good 6.05/117.95 in the final, but Gapp ran a strong 5.80/123.11 for the victory. He also ran the Duster at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in April. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 9.09 lost to eventual winner Wally Booth's 8.93. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, Hill's 9.07/151.51 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. At the third NHRA Division 2 race, Hill didn't win or even reach the finals, but he showed that he was making some upstairs horsepower when he ran 149.75 for Top Speed. He qualified #7 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.20/150.50, and in round one, his 9.26/149.75 beat Kenny Hahn. In round two, Ken Dondero fouled away a 9.22/150, and Hill advanced with a 9.51/127.11. He got another easy run in the semifinals when Bobby Yowell's Dart failed to start. Roy soloed with a 9.44/127.84. In the final, he faced Bob Glidden. Bob's Pinto had been running 9.1's throughout eliminations, so Hill gambled on the tree and lost. He fouled away a 9.22/150.00 while Glidden ran 9.11/153 for the win. The following week (June 16), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 9.201 qualified #3 behind the Pintos of Glidden and John Lingenfelter. In the first round, he fouled away a 9.35 against Al Baldwin's 9.53. Hill won over an eight-car field in July at Colonial Beach. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 9.10 and then ran 9.22/146.78 to defeat Sam Auxier's 9.53/141 and 9.13/145.39 in the semifinal over a fouling Carl Hobson. He went up against Bruce Larson in the final, and Hill's 9.11/147.50 (Top Speed) got the victory over Bruce's 9.22/146. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 9.13 only qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 9.17/150.00 beat Richie Zul's 9.24. Only three Mopars qualified, and he was the only one left after round one. A 9.23 in round two defeated Kelly Chadwick's 9.28 and moved him into the semifinals. There was one of each brand in the semis, his Mopar, a Ford, A Chevy, and an AMC. Unfortunately, Hill's 9.34/148.76 lost to Wayne Gapp's 9.04/151. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the second running of the Pro Stock Open. It was a sixteen-car field, and Roy qualified #10. in the opening round, his 9.21/149.25 lost to Bob Glidden's 8.91/153. Former Butch Leal Duster. Ran 8.95/151.00 at PRO race at NY National at 6.75 pounds per cubic inch. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Roy ran 9.036/149.71 at NHRA Ontario 10/74. Butch ran 9.06 at Suffolk, 9.201/150.50 at Columbus (runner up), 9.139/152.28 at Englishtown (semis), and 9.30 at Indy.

Notes: Obtained photograph of "Millwee's Magic" 72 Hemi Cuda from John Millwee, now living in Springville, California. The photo is the only known photo of the car; it was taken by an unknown photographer. The car is pictured staged next to Sox and Martin during pro stock finals at 1971 Supernationals, Ontario, California. John tells me that S&M built his car, and they had just delivered the car to California. The car was driven by Herb McCandless, an employee of S&M at this race only, to demonstrate the car's capability. Geno Redd was to take over driving for the 1972 season. John says the car ran consistently quicker and faster than Ronnie Sox all weekend because it had been fitted with Lenco trans. Sox was still running a manual shifted 4-speed. John said that in the final race, shown in the photo, Herb left on Ronnie, but the car slowed slightly at the top end allowing "The Boss" to take the win. Geno Redd totaled the car in testing the next day at OCIR and was fatally injured. Since this posting, two other photos of this car have appeared on the internet. I have recently obtained from John Milwee various receipts from the construction of the car as well as the time slips from Piedmont Dragstrip in Burlington, North Carolina, for the first seven shakedown runs on the car driven by one of S&M's drivers, likely Herb McCandless, and one slip marked Geno's first run. - Ray Ahrens | The car ran 9.590/143.08 at NHRA Ontario. | John Millwee passed away on August 28, 2017, in Springville, California.
