Notes: Died in a crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway in March 1974, also killing two crew member from another team. Ran 5.577/283.01 and 5.69/219.51 at Pomona Winters 2/73. The 368 was all time rocket dragster quarter mile record until Kitty O'Neil reset it in 1977. | I modified the rocket chamber out of the X-1 Rislone rocket car designed by J.C. McCormick. I made an all-new fuel and pressure system, larger tank, increased the fuel flow, etc. We increased the thrust from 2500 lbs. To 3000 lbs. I installed the propulsion system in my Top Gas Dragster. The car was sponsored by the Tony Fox team. - Ky Michaelson | In 1973, he was the first to break the five second mark on a 1/4-mile track, at 4.99 seconds, and a Top Speed at the finish line of 322 MPH. | At the 1973 US Nationals he recorded a career best time of 4.62 seconds at 344 MPH, the latter remaining the highest speed ever clocked at an NHRA national event. The 368 from Kitty O'Neil newspaper report when she went 394.

Notes: Recorded on a desert strip, not at an actual drag strip. Went 350 on the 3.22, but was "too fast for the timers to pick it up." Went 312 over 500 meters (1500 feet). (Dave Anderson went faster at 368). Info from newspaper reports. 29-year-old O'Neil was deaf since birth and one of the top stunt persons in the world. A month after this run, she set the all-time record for falling from a height at 112 feet. Kitty also ran 618 in Bill Frederick's Land Speed Record car (on an existing world record of 622) in preparation for setting the LSR. Two major Chicago sponsors did not want a 'lady' doing that and pulled support in lieu of a male driver. Legal action was said to ensue, but we have no details. | Ran 307.04 on a drag strip at Bonneville in September 1977.

Notes: In August 1967, at US 30 Dragstrip in Gary, Indiana, Chuck Suba drove the X-1 to a 5.41-second elapsed time (although Pete Farnsworth felt the best elapsed time record on reliable clocks was 5.9 seconds at Oklahoma City). The 5.41-second elapsed time remained drag racing's all-time Low ET until November 11, 1971.

The 5.41 second elapsed time remained drag racing's all-time Low ET until November 11, 1971, when the second hydrogen peroxide rocket dragster, Bill Frederick's Courage of Australia, driven by Vic Wilson, recorded a 5.107 second 311 mph pass during private testing at Orange County International Raceway, California. In doing so, it became the first car of any kind to run 300 mph in a quarter-mile. The Courage of Australia was essentially a scaled-down Blue Flame clone. Nitrogen was contained in a spherical bottle mounted in the nose forward of the single front wheel with the hydrogen peroxide in a horizontal tank forward of the cockpit.

Notes: The first year driving. We need to confirm the best times. Confirmed 6.13/282.65 at Dragway 42 in August 1972. Newspaper reports said the fastest rocket at 311 mph, but that was Vic Wilson in 1971. The same paper cited 5.71/289 mph at IHRA Longhorn Nationals (Dallas) in June '72. Original Draglist listing cited 310.34 mph. Confirmed 267.12 at Great Lakes on 9/3/72. The car was destroyed at over 250 mph in a late-season wreck at Irwindale. It was not repairable. | The car ran at the Tulsa PRA race and was featured in the movie Funny Car Summer.

Notes: second World Record set at Bristol, Tennessee, October 11, 1981, 344 MPH, 4.22 ET, good for IHRA national records that will never be reset (still in effect as of 2012). Larry says that the car's rear tire came off the track midway. Chutes deployed at half track. Had this incident not occurred, this run could have been under 3 seconds at over 500 MPH. Ran Vega for first part of 1981, but started running EXP at Bristol. | UPDATE: David McGee found the following in the microfiche race reports of the time: Hey Bill, I'm working a new Bristol book and ran across something interesting today about the Larry Flickinger rocket record from 1981. IHRA, you all and his website report the times as 4.22/344.00. The 1981 Drag Review reports the run was 4.30/344.82. | UPDATE: 3/05/17, David provided photographic evidence of the scoreboard after the run: 4.30/344.82.

Notes: I modified the rocket chamber out of the X-1 Rislone rocket car designed by J.C. McCormick. I made an all-new fuel and pressure system, larger tank, increased the fuel flow, etc. We increased the thrust from 2500 to 3000 lbs. I installed the propulsion system in my Top Gas Dragster. The Tony Fox team sponsored the car. - Ky Michaelson | Ran 6.13 at Great Lakes on 9/3/72.

Notes: Times as quoted by Ky Michaelson in his book "Rocketman." Allen ran this car through 1979, then sold it to Fred Goeske, who in turn sold it to Rod Phelps. It has spent time in Don Garlits museum as well. - RT | A few more pictures of my dragster, the Texas Starship. The first picture is at Irwindale, CA, on 30 July 1977. The first runs ever on my car. Note it did not have canards and moved around past 260 MPH, so we stopped the runs after three, and I had canards built by Doug Kruse, and Frank Hussar installed them. I then got my ticket the next weekend, as did Jim Hodges and Kitty O'Neil. The next picture is the Union Grove Labor Day show 1977. Ted Trowbridge, my crew chief, is pumping in the fuel, and Sammy Miller is standing next to me, inviting us over to his pit for lunch. The final shot is of the car in Garlit's museum next to Mongoose's funny car. This was about 20 years ago, and now it's by some dragsters. - John Alan Hudson
