Notes: Rick Howard photo from Edgewater Raceway Park, Cincy, OH. (2-07-1971 - Don Garlits wins NHRA Winternationals in rear engine dragster (7.03 seconds at 214.79 mph) minus rear-wing. Also ran 6.26 NR at Gainesville on 3-18-71 and 6.35 NR at US 131 on 8-71. 6.53 low qualifier at Gators and 6.21 low qualifier at Indy. Beat Keeling and Clayton digger with Rick Ramsey up at Bakersfield 1971 with an ET of 6.71, 223 mph to a quicker 6.64, 224. BACK STORY: Don was having trouble getting the new rear engine car to go straight. Before he figured that out (slow down the steering), he built a slingshot to race for the 1971 season. Wife Pat saw it in his garage and told him to "Get your guys together and make that rear engine car work." They did and the rest is history. Don provided the slingshot to Goodyear to use as a promotional display. He loaded up both cars in a small trailer and headed west. Upon arriving in California, he opened the door a crack with a number of his fellow racers in attendance. They caught a peek at the slingshot and all began laughing, sure that Garlits had given up on his crazy rear engine dragster idea and was going to race a conventional car. Garlits gave the car to Goodyear, then went to the AHRA race, where AHRA boss Jim Tice looked into the trailer and saw rear engine car in pieces (in order to fit both cars, it had to be disassembled). Tice ordered Garlits to put it together right at the gate, so that every fan coming in would see that Garlits was there and that he had this new rear engine car. When Don got it put together and was ready to race, the slingshot drivers did not want to face him, knowing the handling disasters that previous rear engine cars had been. Don was told to take a single and that if he touched either stripe, he would be out of there. Don made a straight and true pass down the track, and he was in. He made it to the finals, where Gary Cochran got him with a holeshot in a slingshot. But the writing was on the wall, and within two years, almost every top fuel team in the country had a new rear engine car. - Don Garlits (paraphrased), from the Racin' and Rockin' with Draglist.com radio show, July 9, 2010).

Notes: One of the best single runs in drag racing history. 1975 NHRA World Champion. Also ran 249.30 best ever at Martin MI 8-75. The 5.63 was low qualifier at World Finals, 250.69 was inaugural entry in the NHRA 250 mph club for Top Fuel. Garlits ran 5.79, 5.65, 5.67, and 5.74 at Ontario to win.

Notes: Amazing run at Chief Auto Parts Nationals ushered in a new performance era. Dale Armstrong helped with the tuning on this National Record. Gwynn became the fastest person in NHRA history when he breaks the 5.30 second barrier by running 5.280, 5.261, 5.276, and 5.272. Gwynn also became the first person to break the 275 mph barrier with a run of 278.55. Earlier in the season, Darrell ran a quickest ever 5.342 as low qualifier at the NHRA Summers in Englishtown, NJ. The 5.261 was low qualifier at Ennis.

Notes: Ill Planned Streamliner. Photo from Indy 1987. Gwynn was first under 5.20 at the Ennis All Stars race in April 1987 with a 5.176 at 276.15 mph, then went nuts at the return to Ennis in October: Gwynn's Budweiser dragster qualified with a sizzling 5.13, 281.07, and then rattled off incredible times of 5.12, 281.42. 5.16, 278.29. 5.09, 281.95. and, in the final, a Low E.T., new National Record 5.084 at 280.37 mph to win handily. Times took a precipitous drop in 1987. Gwynn set the national record at 5.220 low qualifying shot at the Gators, then went 5.174 at the All-Stars (no records recorded there), then set the record at 5.204 at Atlanta. At the Chiefs, set the record three times: 5.123, 5.092, and 5.084.

Notes: In 1969, B&M won the Winternationals in their 392-powered Woody car which had debuted at the 1968 World Finals. By mid-summer of '69 the team had changed to a Ramchargers-sourced elephant motor. Qualified #1 (6.43) at Indy '69 after setting all time quickest ET on low qualifying pass. The stunning 6.43 stood for a year. John ran three of the 15 fastest speeds in 1969. Originally listed a 241, but that time was not supported by Beebe-Mulligan.com, which cited a best 1969 speed of 233.32. John died at Indy 1969 when he had a terrible fire during a first round win.
