Notes: "Big Daddy" Don Garlits started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #1, setting Top Speed as well at 233.16. But Garlits was unhappy after the first round as youngster John Stewart's 6.45 beat his 6.54 in the opening round. Things went more his way at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where once again, he qualified #1 (6.09/235.60). It was a 32-car field, and Don got to solo in the first two rounds, running easy passes of 6.76/149.25 and 8.45/125 before finally racing round three. In that round, he faced Ronnie Martin, and Don narrowly got the win with his 6.20/234, holding off Martin's quicker 6.17/228. In the semifinals, opponent Jerry Wilson got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Garlits still legged it to a 6.19 at only 203.16 for the win. In the final, he went up against the self-proclaimed "King," Jerry Ruth. Ruth was running strong; every one of his runs in eliminations was in the 6.1s. But Ruth snoozed in the final. Although he ran an AHRA ET record of 6.06 at 223.32, it wasn't enough to beat Garlits' 6.16 with an AHRA record of his own at 239.36. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Due to wet weather (rained out twice), traction was poor. Still, Garlits ran 6.838/230.17 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. He improved to 6.603/234.37 in the first round to beat Herm Petersen, and in round two, he set Low ET with a 6.510/227.84 to beat Terry Capp. In round three, Denver Schutz had problems on the line and shut off, so Garlits eased it through with a 9.61/89. The semifinals had Don running 6.541/233.76 to stop Jack Martin's 6.83/202. It was "Big Daddy's" day, as a final round 6.741/235.60 (Top Speed) stopped Dennis Baca's 7.07/213 for the money. The following week (February 25), he was at Sacramento, and it looked like he would have another shot at racing Stewart. But in the semifinals, his 6.68/213.28 lost to Jim Herbert's holeshot 6.72/201. Stewart would go on to beat Herbert in the final. Garlits then set his sights on the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.45 qualified #5 in the 32 car show, but in round three, both he and Dwight Salisbury ran 6.68 (Garlits at a Top Speed of the meet 238.09), but Dwight got the win light. He didn't have to wait long before picking up his next win, as it came the following weekend (March 11) at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. This was a sixteen-car show, and Garlits' 6.71/232.55 qualified #5. He improved to 6.57/233.76 in round one to cover Tommy Ivo's 6.64/216 and an even better 6.21/234.98 (Top Speed) beat Chris Karamesines in round two. The semifinals saw a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, with Ruth staging against Garlits. The results were the same: Garlits' 6.27/232.55 beat Ruth's 6.32/231. In the final, he faced the Low ET car of James Warren. Warren must have been a bit worried as he fouled, handing the win to Don at 6.69/228.42. A week later (March 18), the black car was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Garlits qualified #2 with a 6.087/239.36. He got quicker in round one, with a 6.059/243.24 that beat Karamesines' strong 6.11/236. Garlits speed was a new NHRA record. But in round two, he fell off to a 6.183/241.28, enough to let eventual winner Petersen's 6.08/234 slip by. He qualified #1 at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American race in April with a 6.37, and he made it into the final before fouling against Vic Brown. Not sure where Don found the time, but while running all these events, he was match racing all over the country. He stopped at Green Valley in May for the AHRA Grand American race. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.49 lost to John Wiebe's 6.47. His next win came at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.46/212.26. He beat Mark Williams in the first round before setting Low ET with a 6.33 in round two over a fouling Lee Beard. A 6.38 beat Gary Beck's close 6.40 in the semifinals. His final round victim was Dan Richins. Garlits wasn't running his best at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. It took him four qualifying attempts before his 6.499/230.17 finally got him into the show (#14). But on Sunday, he was the quickest. He started eliminations with a 6.364/226.16 over Don Moody, and his 6.253/233.16 in round two over Pat Dakin was the quickest run made in eliminations. He beat Marvin Schwartz in the semifinal with a 6.490/221.13 and faced Wiebe in the final. John's best on Sunday was only a 6.48, so Garlits was the favorite going into the final, but he slowed to 6.560/225.00 while Wiebe's consistent 6.49/227 grabbed his first-ever NHRA victory. Don became the fourth member of the Cragar Five Second Club with a 5.95 at Portland on July 7, 1973. He ran 5.99/241.93 at Fremont, Ca., in July 1973. Bret Kepner: At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway, Don won Top Fuel Eliminator and was low qualifier at 6.14/230.18. At NHRA Indy, Garlits qualified with #18 at 6.261/228.42 and lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.01/241 to 6.134/234.37. Don also ran 5.90 at Suffolk. Don had a world-beating day at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, which rained out on the first Saturday. NHRA attempted to run on Sunday, but it rained out again. The race was rescheduled and run on November 25. Garlits qualified #1 at 5.803/247.25. He beat Carl Olson in round one, 5.980/244.56 to 6.44/228. In round two, his 5.86/245.23 took out Randy Allison's 6.18/200. Ron really stepped up in the semis with a 5.79/245.90 over Dan Richins' 6.69/138. Gaines Markley did not show for the final, but Don' laid down an amazing 5.78/244.56 for the win. We think that was a 5.784. We need confirmation. Notes: Mike was the #4 qualifier at Indy at 6.221/222.77. He took a 6.450/226.13 first-round win over Stan Bowman, but fouled against Dan Richins in round two. At Ontario, Mike qualified #2 at 6.108/227.84 after Ed Renck's 6.08. In a mirror of the Indy round two, he beat a fouling Dan Richins in round one, with an 8.15 shut off. In round two, he ran 6.14/227.84 when Clayton Harris shut off on the line. Round three saw Mike become the first NHRA 5, and second member of the Cragar Five Second Club (after Tommy Ivo's match race time). Snively snoozed with a 5.974/235.69 to become the first NHRA racer in the fives, but Vic Brown left on him and won with a slower 6.034/231.95. Mike also ran 6.15 at Lions Last Drag Race.

Notes: Tommy Ivo's first rear-engined car. By the end of the year, Tommy was the first Top Fuel in the fives at New Alexandria, PA, and the first member of the Cragar 5-Second Top Fuel Club. The record-setting car used a Woody Gilmore 225" chassis. The bodywork was by Tom Hanna. The 1,700 hp engine was a 426 Hemi with a Reath stroker crank that upped the cubes to 473. Keith Black rods and Jahns pistons. Keith Black also did the machining and the head work. Ivo, however, picked Isky for the cam rather than Black's preference for Engle. A Larry Bowers prepared GMC 6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The engine burned between 76 to 95% nitro. The power was transmitted through a Lenco two-speed overdrive transmission. Ivo varied the rear-end gear ratios from 4.88, 5.13, and 5.38. Bill Carter did the paint. Tom qualified #32 at the Pomona Winters at 6.906/222.22. He upset Jim Paoli in round one, 6.84/223.32 to 6.86/217.39. Tom lost on a holeshot to Ken McLean in round two, 6.91/182.92 to Tom's 6.86/196.93. Tom won IHRA Dallas in June. He qualified #2 (times unknown). He ran 6.56/216.86 to defeat Jack Mitchell's 6.64/201.34 in round one. In the second round, Tommy singled when Skipper Harder broke on the burnout. In the semis, he won a squeaker over Larry LaDue in the Jackie Peebles machine, 6.53/231.36 to 6.54/227.85. In the final, Tommy won another close one over Carl Olson, 6.25/237.46 to 6.26/233.16. At Indy, Tom qualified #14 at 6.421/222.22. He best Sid Seeley in round one, 6.355/221.67 to a ten-second shutoff, but fouled away a 6.824/228.42 to Chuck Kurzawa's winning 7.355/126.93 in round two. Indy was Tommy's last NHRA national event of the year. At Keystone, Tommy ran 6.03/225, 6.25/227 (smoking the tires), and 5.97/230 to win the match over Bob Starr and run the sport's first 'five.' Starr ran 6.82/212 in the first and third rounds. We need the official third digit on the 5.97 if anyone has it. In the photo, John Tarzan Austin, with the hat, is standing behind the wing, and Ivo is packing the chute.

Notes: Amazing times. Early in the year, ran 7.71/198.22 at Lions 2/01/66. | Ran 7.73/195.64 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/66. | Ran 7.30/212 at Pomona 4/66 beating the Surfers' 7.34. | Ran the first generally accepted 7.1-second time with a 7.16 at the AHRA Nationals at Lions in August, and two months later ripped the first six in a match-race at Carlsbad, Calif., with a 6.95. - Drag Racing Online | John ran six of the 20 quickest ETs in 1966 and three of the fastest 19 speeds. - NHRA | Runner-up AHRA Winternationals Irwindale. | John started the season by winning the Jackpot Circuit race at Carlsbad on Jan 9. He qualified second with a 7.62/199.10. He beat Dick Lechien and Bill Leavitt before running a 7.59/205 in the final to beat Tommy Allen's 7.90/208. On January 23 he was at Pomona for its Jackpot race. John qualified fourth with a 7.80/204.08. That wasn't bad considering that there were 34 cars going for the 16 positions. In round two, John lost to Dave Beebe. At the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, the team ran well, beating Tom McEwen in the semifinals, but losing an engine while winning. Unfortunately, they were unable to run in the final giving Bob Hightower a single for the win. John's 7.71/198.22 qualified #14 in the 32 car field at Lions for the UDRA Winternationals on February 26. He failed to reach the finals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he ran on Saturday, March 5, for the hoped for "sit out" position for Sunday. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.67/195.22 in the first round. John had still qualified for Sunday's show, but he got out of shape in the first round, of eliminations against Mike Snively and lost. The team was at Lions for a sixteen-car show on March 26 where a 7.89/198.66 qualified #7. He beat Gary Casaday in the first round, with a 7.96/196.50, but lost in the next round. Another sixteen-car show was run at Irwindale on April 2. Mulligan beat Dwight Salisbury in the first round, with a 7.76/199.54 before slowing to a 10.64/91.63 second round loss to Dave Beebe's 7.70/210. He won at Lions over an eight-car field on April 9. He qualified #2 with a 7.37 and ran a 7.88/160.71 over Bivens and Fisher in the first round. In the semifinal, Connie Swingle fouled against him and he ended up winning by beating Roy Thode in the final with a 7.65/170. Another win came their way on April 17 at Riverside for a Jackpot Circuit event. John qualified #1 with a 7.67 and he set Low ET with a first-round 7.61, beating Jack Ewell. In the semifinal, a 7.80 beat Tommy Allen who shut off early. In the final, a holeshot 7.95/205.00 beat Paul Sutherland's quicker 7.83/188. The following day (April 18) found them all Lions for an eight-car show. Again John qualified #1; this time, a Low ET of the meet 7.47 at 205.46 got him the spot. Nick Marshall fouled against him in the first round, and Connie Swingle did the same in the semis. John's two runs were 8.05/138.46 and 9.37/106.00, but here he was in another Top Fuel final round. Unfortunately, a final round 8.03/146.34 was no match for James Warren's 7.72. John was runner-up at Lions again on April 23 when he fouled away a 7.57/197.80 against Beebe in the final. Mulligan qualified second with a 7.68/181.08 and had run a 7.85/179.64 over an out of shape Warren and an 8.26/146.10 beat Krohn and Angeleri's Injected Chevy fueler in the semifinals. It was on April 24 that the drag racing world really started to notice the Adams-Warye-Mulligan team when they were at Pomona for a Jackpot Circuit race. In the first round, John soared to Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.30/219.50 drilling of Allen. In the second round, he faced Chuck Griffith, but John's clutch was failing and the car pulled through the beams and fouled. He still ran a 7.43 in the loss. They ran at Beeline's Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30 and even though they beat Glenn Brown in the first round, with a 7.66; the speed of 180.36 showed that they hurt their engine and were unable to run in the semifinal. Lions held a sixteen-car show on May 14, and a 7.96 qualified in the middle of the field. John shut off early in the first round, and his 8.08/142.65 lost to Larry Faust's engine blowing 8.14/182. Since Faust was unable to return, John got back in on the "break rule", but lost again with an ailing 9.58 losing to John Edmunds' 7.92/201. The team traveled to Sacramento on May 22 for the Division 7 points race and qualified with a 7.97 at only 159.50. They failed to reach the finals. John set Lions track records of 7.31/216.34 while qualifying #1 on May 28 for a sixteen-car show. In the first round, he beat Ron Goodsell's 7.85/200 with a 7.39/213.76, but Beebe's 7.59/207 beat John's quicker 7.51/204.54 in the second round. Mulligan set Low ET in qualifying #1 at an eight-car show at Lions on June 11. His 7.42/203.16 led the field, but in the first round, his 7.51/187.50 beat Beebe, but a cylinder wall collapsed and they had to withdraw from competition. John cracked off a Low ET 7.24 at 219.50 to lead qualifying at Riverside for the HRM Championships. Unfortunately, he lost to Mike Sorokin in the first round. He did better at Irwindale on July 9 where he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying at 7.44/214.00. Another 7.44 at 205.94 beat Allen and a 7.50/206.88 beat Ron Hampshire in the semifinals. In the final, he met Danny Ongais who lost a clutch on the line and Mulligan won with a 7.53/213.28. Another win came at Carlsbad on May 29 where he qualified #1 with a 7.49 at a track speed record of 221.12. He ran 7.87/215.30 and Low ET of the meet, 7.44 at 218.44 in the rounds leading up to the final where a 7.91/203.16 beat Tommy Allen's 8.27. On August 7, Mulligan ran 7.16 to qualify first at Lions for the AHRA World Championships. A first-round 7.31/218.44 (Top Speed) beat Bob Brooks, but in the second round, the car failed to fire. Dave Beebe met John at Irwindale on August 20 for a best of three match race. This was big as Dave was winning a lot of races at the time. John won the match two straight with times of 7.49/203.16 over Beebe's 7.68/208 and 7.30/206.88 to Beebe's early shut off 7.76/191.08.

Notes: Amazing run at Chief Auto Parts Nationals ushered in a new performance era. Dale Armstrong helped with the tuning on this National Record. Gwynn became the fastest person in NHRA history when he breaks the 5.30 second barrier by running 5.280, 5.261, 5.276, and 5.272. Gwynn also became the first person to break the 275 mph barrier with a run of 278.55. Earlier in the season, Darrell ran a quickest ever 5.342 as low qualifier at the NHRA Summers in Englishtown, NJ. The 5.261 was low qualifier at Ennis. Darrell won the World Finals over Joe Amato with best times of 5.326/274.22.

Notes: The K&G car still ran the small 354 Hemi in '68. It was surprising as most were switching from the 392 to the 426. But Jim Fox said he had found the right combination with the 354. When he had run the 426 with Norm Weekly behind the wheel, he was always experimenting. The small Hemi used a Neil Leffler blower that ran between 15% and 23% overdrive depending on track conditions. The injection was by Enderle. Rivero had his best season ever in '68. He ran well at the AHRA Winternationals running and a 7.29/215.30 in the first round, over Jerry Boldenow, but he could not return for round two. He was the third alternate at the NHRA Pomona Winters at 7.299/218.44. At the PDA Championships at OCIR on March 3, he ran as well as 6.98, but he again failed to reach the finals. Ron won the big Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.97 qualified #5, and he beat James Warren in the semifinals before soloing for the win when Leroy Goldstein failed to fire in the final. On March 17, he was at LaPlace for its '68 Opener. Rivero qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.08. A first-round 7.26 beat Cliff Smith's AA/D. In the semifinals, he ran LaPlace's first "six," a 6.96/216.34 over Kerry Mackenroth. He won the race with a final round 7.04/217.90 over Dave Chenevert. He then set the track record at Cecil County (7.02), Maple Grove (7.12), Delmar (7.06/219.50), and Island Dragway in a best of three match race against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson. Rivero won the match two straight and took both ends of the track record at 7.15/215. Another win came on May 17 at Norwood's 1/8 Mile Championships. Rivero qualified #3 with a 5.03, but he picked up to a 4.93/168.53 in the first round to beat Don Roberts' gas-burner. Jimmy King fouled against him in the semifinals, and Ron ran a 5.08/138 to advance into the final. In the final, he faced off against low qualifier Mike Danylo in Fred Forkner's "Quarterhorse." Rivero set a track record 4.73 at Top Speed of the meet 172.7 to get the win over Mike's 5.22/155. On June 1, Rivero had a best-of-three-match race at Maple Grove against Don Prudhomme, who was making his first eastern appearance of the year in the "Shelby Super Snake." In their first race, Ron's 7.50/204.54 beat the "Snake's" 7.67/153. In the second race, Rivero pulled out ahead by a full car length, and he continued to stretch it out, running 7.45/193.54 to beat Don's troubled 8.02/134. At the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, Ron qualified #8 at 6.963/218.44. In round one, he beat Al Friedman, 7.051/215.30 to 7.37/106, but lost in round two to John Mulligan, 6.65/232 to 6.993/216.34. New England held a for the NED Yankee Fueler Final. It was an eight-car show, but 28 cars showed. The K&G team was experimenting with a new Hilborn injector unit rather than the Enderle unit that they had used all season. It obviously did well, as Rivero qualified #1 with a 7.05/221.70. He improved to a 6.91/221.66 to beat Bernie Schaker's 8.30/116. He set a track record 6.86 at 222.76 in the semifinal to defeat OJ McKinney, who blew a rear end. In the final, he ran 7.27/220.58 for the victory over Phil Miller's shut-off 9.09/91. Ron ran a highly suspect 6.40 at the NHRA D1 Meet at York, PA, on 8/09/68. Formerly listed a 6.71 best for this year.

Notes: First in the 8's. Set NHRA speed record at Lions Drag Strip at 166.97 on February 3, 1957. Also ran 159 and 165.13 on the same day, smashing the existing 157 mph record. Notes: The KING. Jerry ran 7.31 at Arlington, WA (May 1965) and 7.24 at Puyallup (May 1965). He crashed on a 202.70 mph run when the engine blew in the lights in July 1965. Jerry was the quickest Top Fuel car in 1965. Ruth's car was featured in a December issue of Drag News. This was a feature on his second car of the season as he had wrecked one on July 4th when the car barrel-rolled through the traps at 200mph. He was unhurt but a little sore. This was his third Woody Gilmore-built car, and the chassis was 150". It used a 392 Hemi with M/T rods and Venolia Pistons. Engle supplied the cam. The car weighed 1,280 lbs.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Gwynn was first under 5.20 at the Ennis All Stars race in April 1987 with a 5.176 at 276.15 mph, then went nuts at the return to Ennis in October: Gwynn's Budweiser dragster qualified with a sizzling 5.13/281.07, and then rattled off incredible times of 5.12/281.42, 5.16/278.29, and 5.09/281.95. And, in the final, a Low ET, new National Record 5.084 at 280.37 mph to win handily. Times took a precipitous drop in 1987. Gwynn set the national record at 5.220 low qualifying shot at the Gators, then went 5.174 at the All-Stars (no records recorded there), then set the record at 5.204 in Atlanta. At the Chiefs, set the record three times: 5.123, 5.092, and 5.084.

Notes: Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.090/287.72 (the best speed ever) at Ennis 10/87, only to have it bettered on the last run of the day by Gene Snow with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Photo from Indy 1987. Earlier set national record at 279.24 at the 87 Southern Nationals, 282.13 at Indy (not backed up), and 280.98 at the Keystones. Ran 5.110 and 283.73 at 87 Cragar Classic. | Amato started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January It was an eight-car field and Joe's 5.66/247.93 qualified #4. Darrell Gwynn fouled against him in the first round, and Amato's piston burning 5.80/245.23 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran 5.77/247.25, but lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/250. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.42/270.27 qualified #6. He picked up to 5.38/268.49 in the first round, over Denver Schutz's 5.65/251. Gene Snow broke against him in round two, so he advanced with a 5.47/267.45. In the semifinals, his 5.50/264.93 beat Gwynn's 5.63/241. This put Amato into the final against Don Garlits. Based on ETs, the "Old Man" had the advantage, having run a best of 5.36 during eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits set Low ET in the final with a 5.29/270 to beat Amato's 5.41/258.54. Joe's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Strauss in the first round, with a 5.61/257 and in the semifinals he stopped Hank Endres. This set up a Gwynn vs. Amato final. Joe took the victory with a 5.47/265.48 (Top Speed and track record). A week later (March 22), he did it again, this time over a sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a career-best (to this point) 5.32/274.80. He beat Endres in the first round, with a 5.37/272.89 while in round two another 5.32 at 276.14 (Top Speed) beat Larry Sutton. In the semifinals, he ran 5.39/257 to beat Larry Minor and for the second week in a row his final round opponent was Gwynn. Amato went on to win his eighth NHRA Career victory with a new career best of 5.29 at 274.05 to stop Darrell's close 5.30/266. He was at the Texas Motorplex on April 5 for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was another eight-car show and Joe qualified #7 with a 5.36/266.98. A strong 5.37/274.47 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.23/271. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Joe's 5.29/278.12 qualified #2 behind Gwynn's 5.28/274. These two would work their way to the final. Amato started his march by running 5.29/279.24 (new NHRA speed record) to beat a tire-smoking Gary Ormsby. Snow also smoked the tires against him in round two and Amato advanced with a 5.35/273.05. He got lucky in the semifinals when he ran an out of shape 5.73/253.87, but won because Earl Whiting was having his own troubles and only ran 5.86/192. This put the two former alcohol dragster drivers into the final again. This time Darrell took the win. Joe went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but lost a motor in the first round, and fell to Mike Brotherton. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at Baton Rouge on May 24 for the Cajun Nationals. He set a track record 5.30 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 272.89. Joe made his way to the final by beating Frank Bradley's 5.46/263 in the first round, with a 5.34/275.06 (Top Speed). In round two, Gwynn fouled against him and his 5.39/269.78 advanced. A semifinal 5.33/270 beat a tire blazing Hill and set up a final round meeting with Dick LaHaie. Both had run 5.33 in their semifinal races so it was close. It was a tight race, but Dick's 5.31/268 got the victory over Joe's 5.32/270.51 runner-up attempt.

Cylinder Head Research got the nod for doing the cylinder heads. A Marc Danekas prepared GMC-6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. Notes: Gary Beck debuted Larry Minor's new Swindahl-built car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On the opening day of qualifying (Thursday), while everyone else was having trouble just trying to run a "five," Gary came out and ran 5.69. On Saturday, he picked it up to a 5.52/251.39, far ahead of #2 qualifier Jody Smart, who was in with a 5.77. Beck's had now qualified #1 for the fifth straight NHRA national event. He almost lost in the opening round, where the car broke a rear end and coasted through with a 19-second time, but his opponent, Richard Tharp, driving for Kilpatrick and Connell, fouled against him. Rain interfered, and the second round wasn't run until a week later. In that round, he ran 5.60 to beat Jim Barnard's 5.88. But in the semifinals, Beck faced Shirley Muldowney, and while she was streaking to a 5.68 to advance, Gary was filling the area with tire smoke as he overpowered the track. Everything went more according to plan at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, Beck qualified #1, this time with a 5.54/242.90. The spread to the #2 qualifier wasn't as large as at Pomona, as Shirley's 5.57/252 qualified #2. Beck opened with a 5.74/241.28 over Chris Karamesines' 5.91/241, and a strong 5.49/252.80 in round two took out Tharp's 5.63/252. In the semifinals, he faced his boss Minor, who, in round two, had opened some eyes with a 5.51. But Minor lost a blower belt while Gary ran a new NHRA record 5.44 at 252.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Connie Kalitta, and the "Bounty Hunter" went into hard tire shake and shut off while Beck ran another 5.49 at 251.39 for the victory. The team's next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and Gary ran 5.55/245.90 for the pole. He streaked to 5.42 (Low ET) at 252 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Minor. His 5.56/246 beat Kalitta's 5.73/241 in the semifinals. He went up against Tharp in the final, and Richard had lane choice as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.54. But it seemed like Beck's crew chief, Bernie Fedderly, could make the car run just about any number he wanted. Beck ran 5.53/249 in the final to pick up another victory over Tharp's 5.70/245.World Champ 1983. Ran 5.391/252.10 at Fremont (first in the 5.3s), then duplicated the feat at the World Finals. Gary went 5.448 National Record at Gainesville to provide early season thrills. Photo from 1983 Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Several months after becoming the world's fastest dragster (153.91 at Bakersfield on February 12), driver Replogle also set the track record at Kingdon, Calif. (150.80 on May 6). - RT | Replogle was the fifth drag car over 150 on February 12 at 153.91. That set the world record! He beat Lloyd Scott's 152.02. The car was blown. He also ran a 9.120 (we formerly listed 9.11 - need to confirm). Bill became the fastest of all time on July 1 at Bakersfield with a new world record at 155.20. - Bret Kepner, 7/23

Notes: Don set both ends of the AHRA top fuel record at Beeline when he ran 5.78/247.25 during the semifinals of the 1974 AHRA Winternationals. He lost the final to Mike Wagoner when his brakes failed after his burnout, and he coasted down the track. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.09 at Pomona, 6.23 at Gainesville. | After earning $300,000 in '73, "Big Daddy" hoped to make even more in '74. Garlits started the season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. The eight-car field consisted of eight of the nine drivers in the Cragar Five Second club (Mike Snively was without a ride). There was no qualifying for the race as the first-round pairings were drawn from a hat. Garlits went on to win by beating Dan Richins in the first round, with a 6.45/200.44, and a Low ET shot of 6.33 at 225 in the semifinals stopped John Stewart's 6.37/199. In the final, he faced Larry Dixon's Chevy-powered car. Larry lost a blower, and Don won the event with a 6.38/226.13 (Top Speed). It was an excellent way to start the year. At Beeline or the AHRA Winternationals, his 6.04/233.76 qualified #2. A first-round 6.12/227.27 beat Bob Williams, while in round two, he picked up to 5.83/245.90 in beating a fouling Ron Attebury. As mentioned earlier, he reset both ends of the AHRA record with his 5.78/247.25 trashing of Frank Bradley in the semifinals. He was to face Mike Wagoner in the final, but his brakes failed to hold the car on the line, and Mike soloed for the win. The following week (February 3), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 with a 6.09/235.60. In round one, Dwight Salisbury fouled against him, so Don advanced with a 6.47/207.85. In the second round, his brakes failed again just as they had at Beeline, and Pat Dakin soloed for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Don ran 6.23/231.36 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.28/232.55 lost to John Weibe's 6.39/194. He also failed to reach the finals at Sacramento on March 23, but he won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont a week later (March 31). He qualified #2 with a 6.37 and then beat Walt Rhoades in the first round, before stepping up to 6.05/236.84 (Low ET and Top Speed) in beating Dwight Hughes in round two. A semifinal 6.14/232.58 took out a tire-smoking Bob Noice and advanced him into the final against Dennis Baca. The two had a close race, with Don's 6.86/231 beating Baca's 6.87/225. Garlits then went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American on April 6, where he won another one. He showed up with a new Mark Danekas Super Blower. Forty-two cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Don's 6.09/241.28 (Top Speed and new track record) got him the #2 spot. Bill Carter sneezed a blower in the first round, and Don advanced with a 6.47. In round two, a 6.20/238.09 beat Rance McDaniel, and in the semifinals, his 6.37/234.37 beat Gary Hazen. This put him into the final against low qualifier James Warren. James had lost a blower in his semifinal win and had to trash to make the final, but he did. Garlits got the victory with a 6.24/239.36 over Warren's 6.35/223.

No records could be set at this race, however. Also, 6.13 at Seattle and 6.16 at Lions Last Drag Race 12/72. | What can be said of Jerry Ruth? Ruth won the Division Six title seven out of the last eight years. He dominated the NHRA Division Six fuel classes in '71. The self-proclaimed "King" won Funny Car at all five Division Six races and only failed to win one Top Fuel race to have had done likewise to TF! So to back it up for '72, he had Don Long build him a new 217" rear-engined car. Jerry built all his own engines, using a Pamco stroker crank, Air Research blower, Crower cam, as well as an unusual Crower eight-port injector. Ruth dominated the third race of NHRA's Division 6. The race was run at Mission B.C. on June 18. He only qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.70. That set up a first-round race with low qualifier Herm Petersen. In that race, Ruth stepped it up to a 6.25/232.55 to beat Herm's 6.35/229. In the semifinals, he beat Gary Beck with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 231.95. In the final, he took the victory by beating Hank Johnson's 6.69 with a 6.22/235.60 (Top Speed).

The Tim Beebe prepared Chrysler Hemi made getting those speeds a little easier for John. He showed up at Carlsbad on January 1 for a Top Fuel show, but only four cars showed. John set Top Speed with a 7.24/230.16 (track record) in his race against Dave Russell. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to run in the final. A week later, he was at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.71 over Bob Muravez and 7.67 over Doug Walton to reach the finals, where he lost to Dave Beebe. At the AHRA Winternationals, Mulligan qualified #8 with a 7.78. Another 7.78 in the opening round beat Gerry Glenn's 7.77. In round two, "Sneaky Pete," Robinson got crossed up and shut off, and Mulligan advanced with a 7.53/203. He ran an easy solo in round three when Steve Carbone fouled. He lost to eventual winner Connie Kalitta in the semifinals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #22 in the 32 car show with a 7.42/213.76. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.53/211.26 when Chris Karamesines fouled. In round two, a 7.40/212.26 beat Marvin Schwartz. But in the third round, his 7.39/212.76 lost to Kalitta's 7.22/214. He was at Famoso on February 19 for the Bakersfield Meet. He lasted until the second round, where his 7.65/196.06 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.22/200. On March 19, John drove Tom Sturm's funny car at the Amarillo Opener. John was without a ride until June when he jumped behind the wheel of the Beebe Brothers car. Things started well when he won the AHRA 1/8 Mile Championships at St. Louis. He set a new AHRA 1/8 mile record with a 5.05 in qualifying, backed up with a 5.09 in the semifinals. This was not Low ET as Leroy Goldstein qualified #1 with a 4.95, but he broke and could not compete. John won the final with a 5.32/168 over Wayne Strompf's 6.05. On July 4, he was at Tri-City for a best of three match against Tommy Ivo. The first race saw Mulligan's 7.22/212 beat Ivo, but in the second race, Ivo evened up the score with a 7.20/214 over John's 7.34/211.76. Mulligan won the match with a final 7.31/207.84 to beat Ivo's 7.78/171. The team was at Lions for the PDA Championships on July 15. It was a 64 car show that had 125 attend. In the first round, Mulligan's 7.20/218.44 beat Jeep Hampshire. He went on to reach the semifinals, where he beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. But the "Snake" got back in on the break rule when Jack Ewell fouled, and Beebe broke a rear end. In the final, John slowed to a tire spinning 7.99 while Prudhomme picked up the win with a 7.20.

Notes: Bill, I am trying to find a copy of Drag Digest featuring My Top Fuel car at Long Beach on the front cover. Gary Gabelich was at the wheel; on his first pass in my car (a driver qualification pass), he turned a 7.05 ET; the strip record was 6.99 ET at the time. I don't know who took the photo. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry Gall | I was Terry Gall's partner in this Gabelich-piloted endeavor. Indeed, the George Cerny Candy Yellow Striped cowl was tagged "Gall & Laswell." And Terry might be right about the Lions track ET record being 6.99, but I remember it differently as we were trying to back up the 7.05 when the supercharger inhaled an injector bolt. In other words, "Why try to back up a 7.05 when it would have been insignificant?" Moreover, I also remember being the "second quickest" Top Fuel car in discussion with Ronnie Rapp, who I worked with at Ansen. Of course, Gabelich once drove the Purple Gang car owned by Rapp, Rossi, and Maldonado. Maybe also of interest is that Gene Creitz walked up to us while we were in "The Beach" pits, saying he heard us warming up when he was at the starting line. Saying it was the "Strongest" Fuel Chrysler he had ever heard, he walked back to find out whose car it was. Usually pitting next to Popcorn Pam's Hot Dog trailer that was some 200 or so yards away. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell | Update 4/14 — There was no mistaking a "Woody Car" as the two bottom frame rails began to twist and curl just behind the rear-end upright, "Swooping" upward and terminating at the 180-degree bend of the top frame rail some 6"-8" apart. There were no other car builders in that era who approximated that design. Indeed, I think some tall drivers, like Paul Sutherland, could see over the Blower (I'll call him and ask him about that). Sitting somewhat higher, enough to be significantly noticeable from an outsider's viewpoint, seeing over the Blower was an advantage, especially at night. Trying to see between a "Wall of fire" from the headers and the Blower, coupled with the "Normal" vibration, trying to see the car in the opposite lane was near impossible. Sincerely, Teddy Laswell

Notes: Low ET and Top Speed at the season-opening Winternationals at 5.937/244.56. Runner up to Garlits at IHRA Bristol in June 1975, 6.10/238.72 to 6.18/225.56. Won IHRA Dragway 42 over Garlits, 6.00 to 6.03, both at 245.23, in August 1975. | After a great '74 season, Gary was hoping for more in '75. The season started at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.42/229.00 lost to James Warren's 6.35/206. Gary then went to Pomona, where his 5.97/239.36 qualified #2. He set both Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.93/244.46 over Don Souter in the first round. Unfortunately, in round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.49/212.26 loss to Rick Ramsey's 6.18/211. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet. His next stop was at Miami Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Beck 6.00 (Low ET) was two-tenths quicker than the second qualifier. But in the opening round of eliminations, he lost an engine and slowed to 6.41 in a loss to Austin Myers' 6.22. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gary's 6.19 qualified #7, and in round one, he had more bad luck as he tossed a blower belt against Hank Endres. After a few weeks off, Beck went to Amarillo, Texas, for the IHRA World Nationals. Things didn't go so well, as he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He also didn't do too well when he faced off against Jerry Ruth for a best-of-three-match race at Mission BC. Gary lost all three of his races. Things went much more Beck's style at the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga. He won the event by beating Charlie Greer's 6.67/218 with a 6.36/205.94. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.25/231.95 that sent Grant Stoms' 6.46/227 packing for home. He had his closest race in the final, where his 6.47/204.08 beat Larry Bucher's 6.48/200. Early in June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.11/227.84 qualified #6. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.22/222.77 beat Frank Bradley's 6.21/222. But in round two, Beck broke on the line, letting eventual winner Marvin Graham solo into the semifinal with a 6.23. Set the national record at Ontario, only to have Garlits better it and pass Gary for the world championship. Ran 5.74 for the low qualifier at the 1975 World Finals.

Notes: Wide body car. Confirmed 6.31/233.16 at OCIR 5/23/73 and 6.28 at Ontario Supernationals 73. We need to confirm if Don went 5.91 again in 1973. Also had Irwindale track record at 6.20. Ran 6.40 at Columbus, 6.14 at Indy, 6.24 at Tulsa, and 6.21 at Ontario. | Don started the '73 season by qualifying #3 with a 6.40 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He ran well, making it into the final, but smoking the tires to a 7.64 runner-up effort to Frank Prock who won with a 6.55. He qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the third OCIR All-Pro race in Jan, but got himself another runner-up finish, losing to Danny Ongais in the final. It was strange to see Moody among the non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but that's what happened; the team failed to qualify. Moody did win the final OCIR All-Pro race, setting Low ET along the way with a 6.22. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #11, but lost to Herm Petersen in the second round. Another win came in April at the Seattle Northwest Open. There he qualified #1 and ran a 6.17 in the first round, a 6.13 (Low ET) won his second round race and in the semifinals, he outdrove Jerry Ruth. Moody's 6.51 beat Ruth's quicker 6.46. In the final, he met fast rising star Jeb Allen. Don took the victory with a final round 6.28 over Jeb's 6.31. He set Low ET at Sacramento in qualifying #1 with a 6.14 for the NHRA California State Championships. He smoked the tires in the first round, to an 8.33/103.10 loss to Bob Noice. 6.141 233.16 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73.

Notes: Blaine set Low ET in qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 4.66/309.15 led the field. He smoked the tires in the first round against Robert Reehl, but Reehl was having the same problem, and his 8.09/190 lost to Blaine's 6.54/200.57. After that, he could do no wrong. He set Top Speed in round two, where his 4.80/310.20 dropped Mike Dunn's 5.05/229. He then ran 4.74/303.54 in the semi-final to defeat Larry Dixon Jr's 4.79/295. In the final, he faced the old pro, Connie Kalitta, and Johnson's 4.73/299.70 got the victory over Kalitta's 4.82/297. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he qualified #1 once again with a 4.68/303.54. Reehl failed to show in the opening round for his race against him, and Blaine ran a 4.79/296.63 solo to advance. But he slowed to 4.91/242.13 in round two and lost to Scott Kalitta's 4.79/305. His team continued to show power at Gainesville, where a 4.72/303.54 qualified #1 for the NHRA Gatornationals. He brought home another win by stopping Pat Dakin's 4.93/299 in the opening round with a 4.81/297.52. In round two, a 4.74/304.77 beat Joe Amato, while a semi-final 4.73/305.60 beat Connie Kalitta's 4.86/291. In the final, he faced Connie's son, Scott, and the two had a drama-filled race as Scott had a blow over while Blaine slowed the tires. A 10.40-81.34 is all Johnson needed for the win. He didn't quite get the pole at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. His 4.71/303.03 qualified second to Scott's similar 4.71/313. But Blaine had Low ET of the first round, where his 4.73/293.44 took out Bruce Sarver's 5.37. In round two, his 4.85/289 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 4.70/305. It was interesting; in the first four races of the year, Johnson and Bernstein had each won two. The NHRA Winston Invitational was held at Rockingham in the middle of April. This was only an eight-car field, and Blaine's 4.69/299.90 qualified #1. A 4.76/295.17 in the first round beat Mike Smith's 5.02/246, and in the semi-final, he ran 4.79/291.63 to drop Bernstein's 4.83/291. It was another final between himself and Dixon, and once again, Johnson took the win with a 4.77/297.32 over Larry's 4.84/285. On his way to the world championship when he crashed and died in Indianapolis. RIP, Blaine. The Topeka 4.592/313.15 was the low qualifier and Blaine's best times of the year.

Notes: Don started this revolutionary season at Pomona, qualifying well at #10 but not dominating at 6.842/209.39. He beat Tommy Allen in round one, 6.85/208.33 to 6.89/209.79. Don improved to 6.72/211.76 to defeat Jim Nicoll's 6.85/193.54 in round two. He duplicated the 6.72 at 210.53 to beat Carl Olson's shut-off 10.81 in round three. Don easily defeated Jim Dunn in the semis, 6.70/209.79 to 7.58/146.31. In the final, Don paved the way for the rear-engine future with a 7.031/214.79 defeat of a broken Kenny Safford. Garlits put an exclamation point on things at the Gatornationals with a 6.53/226.13 low qualifying effort. He beat Jim Walther in round one, 7.06/172.08 to 7.40/192.71. However, Sarge Arciero upset him in round two, 6.63/228.42 to 6.81/188.07. Don qualified low at the Dallas Springnationals at 6.447/227.27. A solid 6.54/220.04 took out Paul Schoenfield's 8.79/110.20 in round one, and he took out west coast tough guy Don Moody in round two, 6.58/211.26 to 7.07/155.44. Don kept rolling in round three with a 6.54/200.00 win over Ronnie Martin's 6.84/208.89. He took out Kenny Safford's fouling 15.69/67.46 in the semis with a 9.96/87.12. In the final, Don took out John Wiebe to claim the title, 6.591/213.27 to 7.15/154.37. Garlits qualified #3 at the Summernationals at 6.669/223.88. He beat Richie Broughton in round one, 6.76/218.44 to 7.84/161.29, but lost to a Jim Harnsberger holeshot in round two, 6.76/205.47 to Don's 6.69/216.86. Then came Indy, where Don amazed the world with a 6.211/230.76 low qualifying effort. In round one, he beat Al Friedman, 6.28/230.17 to 6.65/223.88. A 6.32/231.36 took out John Wiebe's otherwise excellent 6.46/232.55 in round two. Don beat Summernationals winner Arnie Behling in round 3, 6.25/231.95 to a solid 6.44/224.43. He took out Carl Olson in the semis, 6.31/230.76 to 7.29/149.00. In the final, Steve Carbone beat Don in the famous "burndown" race, 6.486/229.00 to 6.65/229.00. Garlits qualified #6 at the Amarillo World Finals at 6.849/199.55. He beat Mike Tarter in round one, running 6.61/217.39 when Mike lost fire. Don beat a fouling Jerry Ruth in round two, 6.96/196.07 to 6.90/216.34. In round three, Raymond Beadle also left too soon against Don, sending him on a 7.23/145.63 to 9.86/92.21 victory. Garlits took out Clayton Harris in the semis, 6.60/217.91 to 6.72/208.81. In the final, Gerry Glenn upset the Swamp Rat with a 6.59/227.27 victory when it was Don's turn to foul away a 6.55/222.22 effort. Garlits did not run at the Ontario Supernationals this year. | 2/07/71 - Don Garlits wins NHRA Winternationals in rear-engine dragster (7.03 seconds at 214.79 mph) minus the rear wing. Also ran 6.35 National Record at US 131 on 8/71. Ran 6.53 low qualifier at Gators and 6.211 low qualifier at Indy. Beat Keeling and Clayton digger with Rick Ramsey up at Bakersfield 1971 with an ET of 6.71/223 mph to a quicker 6.64/224. BACK STORY: Don was having trouble getting the new rear-engine car to go straight. Before he figured that out (slow down the steering), he built a slingshot to race for the 1971 season. His wife Pat saw it in his garage and told him to "Get your guys together and make that rear-engine car work." They did, and the rest is history. Don provided the slingshot to Goodyear to use as a promotional display. He loaded up both cars in a small trailer and headed west. Upon arriving in California, he opened the door a crack with a number of his fellow racers in attendance. They caught a peek at the slingshot, and all began laughing, sure that Garlits had given up on his crazy rear-engine dragster idea and was going to race a conventional car. Garlits gave the car to Goodyear, then went to the AHRA race, where AHRA boss Jim Tice looked into the trailer and saw the rear-engine car in pieces (to fit both cars, it had to be disassembled). Tice ordered Garlits to put it together right at the gate so every fan coming in would see that Garlits was there and that he had this new rear-engine car. When Don got it put together and was ready to race, the slingshot drivers did not want to face him, knowing the handling disasters that previous rear-engine cars had been. Don was told to take a single and that if he touched either stripe, he was out of there. Don made a straight and true pass down the track, and he was in. He made it to the finals, where Gary Cochran got him with a holeshot in a slingshot. But the writing was on the wall, and within two years, almost every top fuel team in the country had a new rear-engine car. - Don Garlits (paraphrased), from the Racin' and Rockin' with Draglist.com radio show, July 9, 2010). | Where did Don run 244.56? Was that in 1971? The best NHRA national event speed was 231.95 at the Summers. Rick Howard photo from Edgewater Raceway Park, Cincy, Ohio.
