Notes: DaPozzo was at Atlanta in March for the NHRA Division Two opener. His 6.58/202.24 qualified #3. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Butch Osmon, ran 6.71 (Al at 205.47), but Osmon got the "win" light. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 at 6.52/208.42 and then picked up to 6.38/210.37 in the opening round to defeat Jay Payne. He continued to improve in the second round, where his 6.34/213.88 beat Doug McCan. He then reset the NHRA record to 6.32 (at 212.76) in the semi-final to take out a fouling Bill Walsh. He faced the only Donovan-powered car that qualified, Don Irwin's, in the final. Unfortunately, Al had problems and shut down to 9.73/86.22 while Irwin ran 6.56/216 for the victory. In the first week of April, he was at Warner Robins for the second NHRA Division Two race. His 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and in the first round, he beat Bill Mullins with a 6.44/210.28. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.43/211.76. He went up against Don Woosley in the final, and he slowed to 6.86/210.34 that finished runner-up to Woosley's 6.85/175. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/210.18. He slipped to 6.73/188.91 in round one, but it was enough to beat Tony LeBor's 6.86/170. But a even worse 6.86/169.23 in the semi-final lost to Billy Williams' 6.66/200. The following week (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. A 6.49/210.28 qualified #3. The car broke in the first round against McCan. Al qualified #2 behind Walsh at the NHRA Sportsnationals with a 6.45/210.67. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.54 against Mike Kosky. The following week (June 9), he dominated the NHRA Division 3 race at Quaker City Dragway. Al's 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and he survived a first-round scare when both he and Irvin ran 6.69/203.61, with DaPozzo getting the win. A semifinal 6.60/205.47 (again!) beat Tony Zizzo and moved him into the final against Woosley. Al set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 6.42/214.28 to take the victory over Don's 6.70/202. Another week later (June 16), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.46 at 210.37. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round and lost to Dennis Forcelle. | DaPozzo won the Buckeye Nationals at Kil-Kare Dragway defeating Al Kenny in the final 6.81/189.07 to Kenny's 6.83/197.36. | |

Notes: Walt qualified low at Firebird Raceway in the first week of October for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 211.26. He fouled away a 6.53 in the first round against eventual winner Stephen Fedele. The following week, he was in Las Vegas for the NHRA Division Six final. A 6.46/207.85 qualified #3. In the opening round, his 6.49/205.94 beat Larry Klinger. In the second round, he ran another 6.46 at 203.15 to defeat Mark Vasquez's 6.83/198. In the semi-final, he lost to Bruce McDowell, where his 6.51/200.44 fell to Bruce's 6.43/209. Shortly after that, he went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he set Low ET in qualifying low with a 6.39/213.98. Rick Santos fouled against him in the opener, and he advanced with a 6.67/205.76. But in round two, his 6.69/211.16 was stopped by Gary Scelzi's 6.55/211. We need to confirm that Walt went 222 in 1985. The fastest record speed was Bryan Raymer's 221.55 at Amarillo. The Safeway Sandblasting car was at NHRA D7 Fremont, CA, in 1986. Was it Rhodes or Stark? |

Notes: Woosley started his season by winning the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Atlanta. It was an eight-car show and his 6.51/209.30 qualified #2 behind Bill Walsh's 6.45/213. These two would meet in the final. Don ran 6.64/209.79 in the opening round over Kirk Lawrence and in the semifinals, his 6.53/212.26 beat Butch Osmon's 6.64/205. Woosley was not favored in the final as Walsh had run 6.36 and 6.37. But in the final, Walsh failed to fire and Woosley soloed with a 6.46/212.76 for the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.45/213.57 qualified #3. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.52 against Doug McCan's 6.54. He also won the second NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins. Don qualified #2 with a 6.65/205.94. He improved to 6.50 at just 199.11 in the first round, over Hal Canode and in the semifinals his 6.49/210.28 beat Ken Smith. He faced low qualifier (6.57) Al Dapozzo in the final and Don's 6.85/175.09 nipped Dapozzo's fast closing,6.86/210 for the win. Woosley didn't have to wait long before winning again. On April 21 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 6.49/210.97. He ran 6.45 at 215 twice to reach the finals, beating Ron Raymond and Walsh's 6.52 in the semis. He went up against Billy Williams for the title and his 6.50/207.85 got the win over Williams' 6.68/206. The following week (April 28) found him at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.47 at 212.76. But in the first round, of eliminations, he had trouble and shut off to 10.73/45.63 while Don Irvin advanced with a 6.53/212. He made up for the hiccup by winning the second Division 3 race at Central Michigan Dragway on May 19. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #1 with a 6.52 (Low ET) at 209.79. In the first round his 6.54/209.30 advanced when Tony Zizzo crossed the center line and in the semifinals a 6.66/206.42 beat Robert Elbrecht's off-pace 7.10/200. Butch Osmon was his final round victim and an easy 7.07/143.76 got the victory when Osmon shut down at 9.90-71. Then came a victory at Baton Rouge where he won the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 6.39/213.57 in qualifying held for Low ET and in the opening round a 6.46/209.30 dropped Dennis Forcelle's 6.62/202. He had a great race with Lawrence in the semifinals where his 6.44/213.77 beat Kirk's strong,6.47/211. Don faced Williams again for the money and Billy fouled so Don's 6.47/206.89 got the win. He was quite the feared competitor when he rolled into Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals in June. There he ran 6.50/212.76 to qualify #3 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, Don DeVault broke against him and Woosley's 6.54/211.16 advanced. Round two saw his 6.55/209.98 take out Brian Raymer's 6.60/208. In the semifinals, he slowed to 6.60/184.35 in a loss to eventual winner Walsh's 6.48/209. The third NHRA Division 3 race was run the following week (June 9) at Quaker City Dragway. Of course, Woosley was part of the show. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.66/204.54. He worked his way to the final by beating Williams with a 6.80/200.44 and 6.69/204.08 beat DeVault in the semifinals. In the final he faced Dapozzo and Al laid down Low ET of the meet, a 6.54/207 to get the win over Don's 6.70/202.70 runner-up effort. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.51/210.77 qualified #5. He beat Jeff Jones in round one, with a 6.55/208.81, but he fouled in round two against Walsh. He was back at Beech Bend for the next Division 3 race where he qualified #2 with a 6.50/210.28. Once again he worked his way through the field, stopping Williams' 6.70/204 with a 6.65/206.42 and a semifinal 12.19063.92 advanced when Dapozzo fouled. Osmon made up the other half of the final, but Butch fouled and Woosley took yet another victory with a 6.54/201.79. The fourth Division 3 race was at US 131 and Don qualified #1 at 6.50/212.26. He set Low ET in round one, with a 6.41/213.77 over Osmon's 6.57/206. Unfortunately, he slept in the semifinals where his 6.52/211.26 lost to Ken Murray's 6.67/205. His next victory came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Only six cars showed for the eight-car field and Don's 6.40/215.62 qualified #1. Another strong 6.41/215.72 in the first round, trailered Charlie Bauer's 6.47/211, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals and ran 6.46/214.18. This time around, it was Williams up against him in the final and the way Woosley was running, everyone was a little anxious going up against him. So Billy took a chance on the tree and fouled. Woosley picked up the trophy with a 7.44/123.12. |

Notes: This was a jaw dropping run, one of those A/Fuel runs that occur every few years when the combo is just right at the right time. | Jimmy showed up at Famoso for the NHRA Division 6 race on May 5 with Gene Adams turning the wrenches. During qualifying, he made passes of 6.69/209 and 6.63/212 before clutch wiz Tony Miglizzi made a clutch adjustment. Scott then went out and ran 6.327/216.34 for the pole in the sixteen-car field. The times held for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet as it was almost three tenths and ten miles per hour faster than any other A/FD had ever run. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round, of competition. |

Notes: Bill started the year by winning the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show with a 6.56/203.61. Low qualifier Dave Hage fouled against him in round one, and Bill advanced with a 7.53/126.22. In the semifinals he ran another 6.56 at 208.33 to beat Dave Hansen's 6.58/205. This put him into the final against Denny Lucas. Barney got the victory with a 6.48/208.81 when Lucas fouled. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and almost pulled it off again. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/210.77. A 6.50/208.33 beat Steve Faria in round one, while a 17.06/46.43 advanced past a fouling Stephen Fedele in round two. He picked up to 6.46/209.10 in the semifinals to beat Mark Vasquez's 6.57/210. Unfortunately, Barney fouled away a 6.58/208.81 in the final against Hage who shut off to 12.17/64 for the win. He didn't have to wait long before he won again. Bill went to Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 3. He ran 6.41/208.33 to qualify #2 and then ran 6.48/205.94 over Bruce Walker's 6.84/182 in round one. In the semifinals, a 6.52/204.08 beat Troy Buff's 6.95/189. This set up a final round meeting with Bubba Sewell. Bill was too strong on this day and his 6.57/204.54 scored the victory over Bubba's 6.64/192. He qualified #4 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.47/208.42, but he lost in the first round, when he fouled against Butch Osmon. |

Notes: Set 221.55 national record at Amarillo on 5/85. Was that run altitude factored? | Brian started the '85 season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.49/212.76. Another 6.49 at 209.30 advanced when John Shoemaker fouled, but still another 6.49 at 211.26 lost to Dennis Lucas' 6.47/212 in the semifinals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.42/207.27 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. He slowed to an off-pace 6.62/172.87 in the first round, that lost to Alan Deboer's 6.47/211. | At the NHRA Quaker State Northstar Nationals in Brainerd, Raymer qualified #2 for the 8 car field with a 6.443/213.27. He defeated #6 qualifier Dennis Forcelle in round 1 with Low ET 6.368/216.86 to Forcelle's losing 6.454/212.76. He defeated #8 qualifier Don Woosley in the semis 6.419/217.39 to Woosley's losing 6.455/215.82 & #3 qualifier Bill Walsh in the Final with a 6.396/218.44 setting Top Speed of the meet to Walsh's losing 6.450/216.34. Raymer then went to the US Nationals where he qualified #5 with a 6.441/215.20. He defeated #13 qualifier Jay Payne in round 1 6.473/214.79 to 6.621/209.20 & in a rematch of the Northstars final, faced #1 qualifier Bill Walsh in round 2. Unfortunately for Raymer, the result would not be the same as Raymer's 6.605/211.16 was no match for the eventual winner Walsh's 6.423/214.89. |

Notes: At the WWCS in Bakersfield in May, Payne ran 6.619/212.26, but was outside the 16 car field looking in. Fortunately for Payne, #16 qualifier John Shoemaker was unable to make round 1 & Payne got in to face #8 qualifier Bill Barney. Unfortunately, Payne's 6.77/204.08 was no match for Barney's 6.52/208.81. Payne then went to Fremont for the WWCS where he qualified #3 in the 16 car field with a 6.374/215.31. In round 1 he faced #11 qualifier Dave Hansen. Payne's 6.61/210.28 was a losing effort to Hansen's 6.545/208.81. At the US Nationals, Payne qualified #13 with a 6.540/219.60 & drew #5 qualifier Brian Raymer in round 1. Payne's 6.621/209.20 was a losing time to Raymer's 6.473/214.79. Ran NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona where Payne qualified #4 with a 6.442/214.38. Payne defeated #12 qualifier Billy Williams in round 1 6.594/211.56 to 6.751/209.39 & #16 qualifier Denny Lucas in round 2 6.565/210.77 to 6.641/204.26. Payne would face #2 qualifier Kirk Lawrence in the Semis. Payne ran a 6.506/211.56 losing effort to the eventual runner Up Lawrence's 6.459/212.16. |

Notes: Larry was the second alternate at the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.52/206.89. The following week (October 12), he was in Las Vegas for the NHRA Division Six final. A 6.92/193.96 qualified #9, but he fell off to 7.17/191.89 in the opening round and lost to Walt Rhoades' 6.49/205. Shortly after that, he was at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, where he was the seventh alternate with a 6.60/207. Did Larry run the 6.381 in 1985 or 1987? It would have been a top ten run in 1985 (and impressive in 1987 as well). Where did he run these times? |

Notes: Dave started the '85 season at Firebird Raceway in January for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.47/210.77, but he fouled against eventual winner Bill Barney in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.38/213.98 to qualify #2. John Shoemaker fouled against him in the first round, and Dave advanced with a 6.46/212.76. In round two, Joe Nowocinski got out of shape and shut off against him, and a 6.41/211.76 moved into the semifinals. There he ran 6.44/209.10 to beat a motor blowing Jim Scott. This set up a final-round meeting between Hage and Barney. Bill fouled, and Dave coasted to a 12.17/64.64 to pick up the victory. |

Notes: Dennis attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.67/207.27 left him as the sixth alternate for the show. He ran 6.52/211.26 at NHRA D7 Fremont on May 19. Dennis was at Sears Point in June for the NHRA Division Six race. A 6.49/211.26 qualified #5. Mike Troxel fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.69/205.47. In round two, his 6.64/205.47 defeated Mark Vasquez's 6.66/211. Eventual winner Walt Rhoades stopped him in the semi-final with a 6.43/208 that covered Dennis' 6.68/204.08. |

Notes: Horner had the quickest Rodeck-powered car in qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.51/208.33 got him in the #6 spot. In the opening round, he beat Bubba Sewell with a 6.57/199.91. In round two, his 6.62/202.15 lost to Walt Rhoades' 6.38/214. He was at Englishtown in the first week of May for the NHRA Division One opener. A 6.57/210.03 qualified #3. He beat alternate Bruce Alken in the first round with a 6.60/206.18, but in the semi-final, his 6.62/206.42 lost to eventual winner Bill Walsh's 6.48/212. Only five cars showed at Cayuga's second NHRA Division Two race. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue, but Bruce ran 6.73/192.30 to qualify second to Walsh's 6.67/203. He improved to 6.66/206.18 in the first round to beat Bob Leverich, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and ran 6.67/204.54. He faced Walsh in the final, and once again, Walsh got the win. Early in June, he went to Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. His 6.62/203.16 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he lost to Brian Raymer in round one. |

Notes: Check out the dual rear wing. Lee was in Atlanta on April 21 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.43/214.79 qualified #1. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.92/194.30 that fell to Billy Williams' 6.57/208. A week later (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. It was another eight-car show, and Lee's 6.52/212.26 qualified #4. He improved to 6.49/212.76 in the opening round to defeat Tony Zizzo's 6.56/209. But in the semifinal, he slowed to 6.91/207.85, which lost to eventual winner Butch Osmon's 6.60/205. He raced at Baton Rouge in May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.51/212.86 qualified #3. Young had a close race with Kirk Lawrence in round one, that saw his 6,64/209.20 lose to Kirk's 6.62/211. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He qualified right in the middle (eighth) of the sixteen-car field with a 6.56/214.38. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.62 against Doug McCan, who advanced at 7.63. | At the NHRA US Nationals, Young qualified #2 with a 6.412/215.20. He would defeat #10 qualifier Don Irvin in round 1 6.542/213.67 to 6.908/198.15. #14 qualifier Mike Kosky in round 2 6.540/214.38 to 6.657/194.21 & #16 qualifier Ken Murray in the semis with a 6.504/213.39 after Murray red lit. In the Final Young faced #1 Qualifier Bill Walsh. While Young was consistently in the 6.50s & did it again with a 6.525/216.03, It was a losing effort to the 6.40 consistent Walsh & his 6.428/215.41 time to the US Nationals Victory. |

Notes: Williams had trouble in qualifying at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In two qualifying passes the rear wing broke and had to be repaired. He finally got in a good pass and ran 6.57/210.37 to qualify #13. In the opening round, he and Stephen Fedele had a close race that saw Fedele's 6.54/213 beat Williams' 6.56/209.59. His next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April. It was an eight-car field and his 6.54/208.04 qualified #5. He faced low qualifier, Lee Young in the first round, and Billy's 6.57/208.33 advanced over Lee's off-pace 6.92/194. In the semifinals, a 6.66/200.62 beat Al Dapozzo's 6.85/169. This put him into the final where he faced Don Woosley. Williams tried hard, but his 6.68/206.51 finished runner-up to Woosley's 6.50/207. On May 19, he was at Central Michigan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race. It was another eight-car show and his 6.61/207.37 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he was unable to run eliminations, and he was replaced in the show by alternate, George ETterman. The following week (May 26). He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.49/214.48. A first-round 6.52/210.77 beat Bubba Sewell's 6.64/205 and a semifinal 6.54/212.36 advanced when Jay Meyer fouled. Once again he faced Woosley in a final and once again he lost. This time he got anxious and fouled shutting off to 9.28/83.47 in another runner-up finish. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He qualified #9 with a 6.57/212.76 setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bill Walsh. It was eventual winner Walsh's day as his 6.46/213 trailered Williams' 6.68/211.46. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Quaker City Dragway, Billy qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.92/202.24. He was off his normal pace at this race and in round one, his 7.00/196.07 lost to Woosley's 6.80/200. The car was running much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There his 6.49/213.98 qualified #3, and he ran 6.59/209.59 over Don DeVault and a 6.66/208.04 odd-lot solo to reach the semifinals, where he fouled away a 6.70 against Dennis Forcelle's 6.72. | At the NHRA Budweiser Summernationals in July at Englishtown, Williams qualified #3 with a 6.424/213.57. In round 1 he would face #11 qualifier Bill Mullins. Williams would run 6.755/209.20 in a losing effort to Mullins's 6.643/203.80. |

Notes: Gary was at Famoso in the first week of May for the NHRA Division Six race. His 6.57/212.76 qualified #14. In the opening round, Dave Hage's 6.57/206 defeated his 6.62/209.30. Shortly after that (May 19), he was at Fremont for the third NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #13 at 6.57/212.26, and in the first round, he fouled away a 6.64/209.79 against Rick Santos, who advanced at 6.52/205. Fremont held its own independent Golden Gate Nationals in the fall. It was a sixteen-car show, and Gary qualified #6 with a 6.43. Unfortunately, he split an oil filter on the line in the first round, letting Chuck Hendrickson solo into round two. |

Notes: If you were a Chevy guy, this is the car you rooted for in '85. The little small block was turning some amazing times. He was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 6.52/208.04 qualified #8. He slowed to a 6.68/203.89 in the opening round and lost to Jim Scott's 6.43/215. Rick was at Famoso in May for the NHRA Division 6 race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #9 with a 6.54/208.33. He faced low qualifier Scott in round one, but Scott broke so Santos advanced with a 6.57/200.89. In round two, he beat Alan Johnson's 6.63/205 with a 6.58/205.94. He ran his best of the weekend, a 6.52/205.94, in the semifinals, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Walt Rhoades' 6.47/214. At the next Division 6 race at Fremont on May 19, he qualified #5 with a 6.437/202.70. It was another sixteen-car show and in the first round, his 6.52/205.94 advanced when Gary Christensen fouled. Unfortunately, in round two it was he who fouled, throwing away a 6.46/196.07 in a loss to Bruce McDowell's 6.37/216. The next Division 6 race was at Sears Point on June 23. Rick qualified #8 with a 6.51/209.30. In the first round, he fouled against Ken Hickson. Top qualifier at the LACR ADRL race at 6.81. George Santos / S & S Automotive | At the NHRA Winston Finals, Santos qualified #9 with a 6.469/210.47 & drew #1 qualifier Walt Rhoades in round 1 where Santos Red Lighted. |
