Notes: Stan qualified #1 at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 6.32/220.96. Only eleven cars showed, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 6.33/220.96. In round two, opponent Jett Field failed to show, so he singled with a 6.33/221.40. Things were looking good going into the semifinals against Chuck Cheeseman, who ran about a half-tenth off his pace. But in their race, Stan tossed a blower belt and slowed to a losing 7.14. He then went to Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 6.12/230.82. Another 6.12 at 229.47 advanced in round one, when Hans Kuesel fouled, and he had a really tight race against Brad Anderson in round two that saw Sipos' 6.05/232.79 edge out Brad's 6.05/234. He easily beat Billy Williams in the semifinal with a 6.06/233.88. His final-round opponent was Bret Williamson. Bret was at least a tenth of a second off of Stan's pace, and it stayed that way in the final. Sipos got the victory with a 6.04/223.28 over Bret's 6.13/229. Shortly after that, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. A 6.07/229.24 qualified #4. He beat John Hyland in the opening round with a 6.13/226.47, and a round two 6.08/226.52 stopped Bucky Austin's 6.11/228. Eventual winner Pat Austin beat his 6.09/226.52 in the semifinal with a 6.03/231. He did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Near the end of August, he was at Race City Speedway in Calgary for the fifth NHRA Division 6 race. He picked up the victory by stopping Field in the final with a 6.21 (Low ET) at 225.00. Surprisingly, he also did not compete at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The next Division 5 race was held at Bandimere on September 15. Stan set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying number one with a 6.27/224.83. A first-round 6.40/222.60 beat Lance Van Hauen, and in the semifinals, Bucky Austin's 6.32/221 lost to his 6.29/223.24. He beat Corky East's 6.46/214 in the final with a 6.33/221.45. As the NHRA Keystone Nationals were run on the same day, he obviously did not race there either. The last NHRA Division 6 race was run at Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex the following week (September 22). Only five cars showed, and Sipos seemed down on power here. He only qualified #4 with a 6.25/223.74, and the car broke against Hyland in the first round, losing with a 6.82/169.26. He also missed the NHRA Heartland Nationals, and his next NHRA Major event appearance came at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals. There, he qualified #6 with a 6.01/234.86. But in the opening round, his 6.06/231.18 lost to Jody Austin's 6.01/231. Stan went to Firebird Raceway the following week (October 20) for the NHRA Division 7 final. He set Low ET during qualifying at 6.10. The speed on his pass was 227.61. He beat Jim DePasse in the first round, before his 6.22/225.96 lost to Mark Woznichak's 6.21/222 in round two. In round one, the former boat racer defeated a tire-shaking Al DaPozzo with an improved 6.10/227.73, a tire-rattling Bob Newberry in round two, and Dick Malone in the semis meet up with Pat Austin for only his second final round since joining the TAFC ranks in 1985. Austin won, 6.10/232.37 to 6.18/225.00. After a first-round win at the Pomona Winston Finals, Mullins was disqualified after being P&G'd at 542 CID while claiming 540 CID. That was a tough break. |

Notes: Lou was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the New Year's Day race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 7.07/193. In round one, he got to solo and went 6.98/200.00 to advance. In the semifinals, a 7.36/200.00 beat Richard Day's 7.67/184. He faced Wilfred Boutilier in the final, and Wilfred had problems and shut off while Lou grabbed the victory with a 6.83/203. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. He qualified #11. In the second round, he beat Derry O'Donovan's 7.02/178 with a 6.85/199, but he blew his engine while winning and had to drop out of the competition. On January 17, he was at OCIR's season opener. He beat Frank Harris' 7.76/195 in the first round, with a 6.95/197.36, but in round two, his 6.99/201.79 lost to the eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.70/179. He qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.90/202.24. But the car lost fire against Sherm Gunn in the opening round. On March 6, Gasparelli won over an eight-car field at Irwindale's Night Opener. He set Low ET in the first round at 6.81/203.16. Gunn's Monza broke in the second race, so Lou got to solo with a 7.39/203.16. He faced Richard Day in the final, and a 7.06/201.79 got the victory over Day's 7.23/170. The next day, he went to Bakersfield, but his 6.91/200.89 lost to Dave Hage's 7.02/192 in the first round. Lou was at Ontario Motor Speedway in April for a twelve-car show. The field was one short, so he got to solo in the first round, making an easy pass. In round two, he smoked the tires at 7.85 but got lucky as Larry Garcia had problems and shut down. In the semifinal, he set Top Speed with his 7.42/201.19 beating Dale Van Gundy. He was matched up against Brad Anderson in the final, and Brad was running much better times than Lou was. Gasparelli smoked the tires while Anderson's 6.96/200 picked up the win. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola FC Championships. There were 18 cars there, and all were to make two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In Lou's first race, his 6.83/204.54 beat Van Gundy, who shut off, and in his second race, he ran 6.89 at an early shut-off speed of 189.47 but lost to Tom Lemon's 6.72/201. Notes: Denton was the number 2 qualifier at Green Valley WWCS race with a 6.57/209. He made the finals with times of 6.64/209, 6.63/208.33, and lost on a holeshot to Charlie Byers’ 6.71 with a quicker 6.69/208.81. Baton Rouge was second D4 race of the year. Denton was the number one qualifier with a 6.60/209.33. Dal ran 6.58 195.22, 6.51 211.76, and 6.52/211.26. He made it to the semis at the Amarillo WWCS race, running 6.80s with a best of 6.86/214.27. Denton was the winner at Alamo WWCS race. He was the number one qualifier with a 6.77/203.61. Denton ran 6.76/206.89, 6.70/204.08, and 6.69/208.33 in the final. Dal won the 1000 foot race at I-20 Tyler AAFCC on 6/14/85 with a 5.69 best in June. Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full-time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the offseason, he would build up a new motor that had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part-time effort, he did quite well against the full-time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin) | Bill saw this car compete at OCIR in 1977. |

Notes: Listed times of 6.10/237.85 were recorded in The Drag Racing List, Fall 1990, Volume 5, Number 4. We also have info that she ran the 237.85 at IHRA Atco in 1993. We were good, but we didn't have ESP back in 1990. So, we need to untangle that. I am assuming she ran that time at IHRA Atco 1990? Who can help with this? |
