Notes: Bucky was in Denver at the end of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 6.81/201.79 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, his 6.85/203.16 beat Dan Nimmo's 6.86/200. In the semi-final, a 6.86/205.01 dropped Ray Motes' 6.95/203. He faced low qualifier Vern Moats in the final, and Vern's 6.77/213 beat his 6.78/206.89 for the title. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Was this run in 85? Was this car blue in 85?

Notes: Moats was tough to beat in '85. He didn't make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where his 6.49/214.79 qualified #4. In round one, he beat John Armstrong with a 6.90/173.14 and a second-round 6.48/211.16 advanced when Wayne Stoeckel fouled. In the semifinals, he ran another 6.48/211.16 to beat Bob Newberry's 6.70/217. In the final, he faced Ken Veney, who had not even qualified but had gotten in as an alternate. Vern had problems and shut off to 12.43/59.03 while Veney ran 7.27/207 for the victory. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he dominated. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.41/217.60. In round one, Dave Sebring's 6.95/159 lost to Moats' 6.46/218.55. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.38/220.91 that took out Veney's 6.62/214. In the final, he ran Newberry, and he ran his slowest time of the day, a 6.72 at 217.07, but it was still enough for the win over Bob's 6.79/205. On May 5, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. It was another eight-car show, and Vern qualified #1 with a 6.79. A first-round 6.73/222.31 beat Mike Fialho, and he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.62/225.20 in the semifinals while defeating Dal Denton. In the final, he went up against Charlie Byers, and Vern's 6.70/220.50 grabbed the victory easily over Byers' 7.18/205. Another win came at Brainerd's second NHRA Division 5 race on May 19. It was more of the same story; he qualified #1, Low ET, and Top Speed at 6.49/220.04 in the semifinals over Darrell Amberson, who broke. And then ran 6.53/213.27 in the final to win over Richard Smith. Things didn't go quite as smoothly at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.52/215.31 qualified #4 in the eight-car show. He beat Bogie Kell in the first round, with a 6.56/214.38, but in the semifinals, his 6.64/213.87 lost to Denton's 6.48/213. He got back into his winning ways at the Pueblo Division 5 race. It was a rained-out event that ended up taking six weeks to complete. On the original date, Moats qualified #1 with a 7.12/183.25. He ran 6.98/210.30 and 7.25/199.27 to advance to the final against Smith. Then it rained to the final was run at Brainerd six weeks later where Vern's 6.49/216.08 got the victory when Richard Smith was unable to show. The wins kept stacking up. On June 2, he won the NHRA Sportsnationals at Beech Bend. It didn't come easy as his 6.56/216.45 qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he faced low qualifier, Newberry, and he stepped up to a 6.47/217.07 to beat Newberry's close 6.48/216. A second-round 6.45/217.70 beat Fred Mandoline's 6.61/217 and a 6.48/216.86 in the semifinal advanced when Denton fouled. His final-round opponent was Steve Group. Steve had troubles and slowed to 8.00/138 while Vern motored to 6.50/216.03 for another victory. On June 8, Bandimere hosted the next NHRA Division 5 race. It was an unusual 12 car show. Of course, Moats qualified #1 with a 6.83/208.33. The next quickest qualifier was Amberson at 7.04! Another 6.83 at 206.89 beat Jim Eberley in the first round, and a solo 7.11/151.00 advanced in round two when Kyle Green broke. He got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 6.84/205.94 in the semifinals. Brad Anderson was waiting to run Vern in the final, and Moats got left on as Brad's 6.81/207 won over Vern's Low ET of the meet 6.76 that was good for the runner-up spot. The story continued at the NHRA Springnationals. He made six passes at National Trail, with the slowest being a 6.41. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.28/222.44 qualified #1. In the first round, his "slow" 6.41/218.97 beat Dick Bell. Veney's second round 6.60/207 fell to Moats' 6.36/220.69 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.37/219.83 took care of Newberry's 6.52/207. Final round opponent Pat Austin fouled against him, and Vern's 6.38/218.55 got yet another victory. Vern qualified #1 at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals with a 6.271/221.56 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.35/219.40 beat Carol Henson's 6.51/217. In the semifinals, a 6.37/218.97 beat Bob Newberry's 6.40/219. In the final, he ran Frank Manzo. Unfortunately, he broke a blower pulley, and Manzo took the win a 6.39/221 over Vern's 7.82/110.73.

Tim Slagle's 6.05/233 lost to Bartone's 5.84/242.98 in the semi-final. He faced Pat Austin in the final and Tony was more than up to the task as his 5.82/244.76 got the victory over Austin's 5.91/243.

Notes: Bob qualified #1 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.02. He lasted until the semifinals before his late 6.12 lost to eventual winner Pat Austin's 6.14. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he won. A final round 6.07/228.48 stopped Brad Anderson's 6.13/224. Bob was the first alcohol funny car in the five-second zone with a 5.952 at Englishtown, NJ, on May 7, 1989. His 231.95 mph run would have been a record if he could have backed it up, but a strong headwind prevented that. He ran several 6.0s elsewhere before getting the record at Englishtown. Did Bob run quicker (5.90) later this year? | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Newberry qualified #1 with a 6.098/229.01. Newberry Defeated Tony Bogolo (the Alternate for #16 Qualifier Steve Litton), in Round 1 6.181/226.13 to 6.522/205.01, 6.565/221.13 over a Red lighting #9 Qualifier Phil Sebring in round 2, & a 6.249/226.13 over a red lighting #5 Qualifier Ronnie Midyette's 6.430/227.27 & Defeated #2 Qualifier Greg Moss in the Final 6.252/225 to 6.395/217.92. | He ran 6.067/229.18 at NHRA Indianapolis. Notes: Runner up at inaugural Ennis All-Stars race. Set 6.195 national record at 87 Chief Auto Parts Nats at Ennis (I don't understand why the 6.173 wasn't saved as the National Record - the 6.195 would have backed it up within one percent). Also ran 222.80 at 87 Gators. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. | Pat started his season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener in January. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.63/213.77. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Mike Grieco. Austin stepped up to a 6.38/216.86 to beat Mike's 6.40/215. Vern Moats had problems in the semifinals and shut off, while Pat advanced to the final with a 6.44/216.86. The new season started great with a final-round victory over Brad Anderson. Pat's 6.43/215.82 beat Brad's 6.57/182. He almost did it again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #3 with a 6.31/218.18. A first-round 6.34/219.88 took out Rick Henkelman, and in round two, another 6.34 at 220.31 beat Lou Gasparelli's 6.43/218. In the semifinals, Grieco's 6.64/215 lost to Austin's 6.33/220.21. So for the second straight event, Pat was in the final. This time his opponent was Chuck Phelps. Unfortunately, Pat broke a rod and slowed to 8.68/96.57, losing to Chuck's 6.53/214. Ran 6.311/221.59 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/87. Photo from Indy 1987.

Notes: Manzo was a formidable competitor in the alcohol Funny Car ranks. On May 18, he was at Cayuga for the second NHRA Division One race. His 6.70/211.26 (Top Speed) qualified #1. Only seven cars had shown for the hoped-for eight-car field. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 6.71/209.79 to advance. Manzo improved to 6.68/210.77 in the semifinal to stop Larry Dobbs' 6.85/203. He faced Bob Newberry in the final, and Bob cut a great light that saw his 6.72/209 hold off Frank's 6.64 (Low ET) at 211.26 runner-up effort. He was at Brainerd on August 17 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. "Ace" qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/219.51. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.37/218.97 that beat Bret Williamson, and in the semifinals, his 6.40/219.51 beat Vern Moats' 6.56/218. This put Manzo into the final against Arnie Karp, who also ran 6.40 in his semifinal race. The two had a good race, but Karp's 6.38/218 beat Manzo's 6.50/217.39 for the title. Notes: At the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, Branch qualified #2 with a 5.676/252.43. Branch faced #15 qualifier Bernie Harrington in round 1, Branch won with a 5.712/251.63 after Harrington red lit. In round 2, Branch Met #7 Qualifier Ed Marx where Branch advanced with a 5.647/253.85 to Marx's losing 5.861/250.51. Which lead Branch to a semi final matchup with #3 Qualifier Bucky Austin. Branch had the Advantage off the starting line, but his 5.696/252.57 couldn't hold off the eventual Winner Austin's 5.615/257.53. At the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, Branch once again qualifed #2 with a 5.578/254.86. Branch would defeat #15 Qualifer Ben Harper in round 1 & then faced #7 qualifier Steve Gasparrelli. Unfortunately, Branch's 5.746/254.09 was a loss to Gasparrelli's 5.617/255.53.
