Notes: Gary failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals eight-car field. On June 23, Cellone was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #2 with a 6.44/216.87 behind Bob Newberry's 6.35/218. These two would meet in the final. Gary started his run with a 6.40/216.86 over Larry Dobbs' 6.75/204, while a semifinal 6.43/214.28 beat Dennis Bedrosian's 6.50/215. Newberry held the edge throughout eliminations running a best of 6.36, and he held it in the final by running another 6.36/218 to get the victory over Cellone's 6.42/216.86. | At the Buckeye Nationals at Kil-Kare Dragway on 7/20/85, Cellone would win the event by defeating Joe Comella in the final. | At the NHRA Division 1 final in New England, Gary qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.51/213.01. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Newberry. Cellone picked up to a 6.44/207.13 to beat Bob's 6.52/213. Unfortunately, another 6.44 at 215.56 in the semifinals lost to a quick-leaving Dick Bell, who beat him with a 6.50/215. Gary qualified #2 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove with a 6.318/222.22. He beat Dick Bell's 6.44 in the first round, with a 6.34/218.55. A semifinal 6.41/216.65 lost to Frank Manzo's 6.34/221. |

Notes: Greg was at Rockingham in April for the NHRA Division Two race. His 6.14/227.21 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, his 6.15/226.75 lost to Ron Scott's 6.05/233. Only four cars showed up at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race at the beginning of June. Moss qualified last with a 9.13/97.82. He ripped off a 6.36/217.39 in the first round to beat low qualifier Gary Retell's 6.30/218. Moss then faced Terry Mullins in the final, and his 6.32/221.67 got the victory over Mullins' 6.35/225. He was at Memphis Motorsports Park for the next NHRA Division Two race in July. His 6.15/226.98 qualified second to Rettell's 6.14/227. These two would work their way into the final. Greg started by running 6.26/226.35 over Bogie Kell's late 6.23/227. Dave Sebring fouled, and Moss coasted down the track at 15.66/36.13 to advance in the semi-final. In the final, Moss' 6.28/225.22 finished runner-up to Rettell's 6.20/225. He qualified #6 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.07/231.66. In round one, he beat Rettell with a 6.16/227.15. Unfortunately, in round two, his 6.06/232.73 lost to eventual winner Pat Austin's 6.00/234. He was in Texas in mid-October for the NHRA Chief Nationals. Greg's 6.002/232.01 qualified #7, and in round one, his 6.01/230.76 got the better of Jody Austin's 6.09/230. In round two, Herb Rodgers' 6.20/225 fell to Moss's 6.06/230.47. He got crossed up in the semi-final and shut off to 16.54/32 in a loss to Sebring's 6.05/230. Where was the 233.10 run? IHRA event? |

Notes: Bill Matheis of Powerhouse Speed Shop was Bunny's partner. Burkett was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. She won her first-round race with a 6.35/216, but in round two, Al DaPozzo's 6.38/218 nipped her 6.39/217. The following week (March 22), she was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Carol qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.48/213, but she lost in round one. Maple Grove held its Spring Funny Car Nationals, and Burkett reached the final, running a 6.48/215.31 best. She improved to 6.42/216.86 in the final but lost to Pete Gallen's quick-leaving 6.47/216. On May 17, Burkett was at DeSoto Memorial for the NHRA Division 2 race. She qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.46/220.58. Another 6.46 at 215.31 beat Dal Denton in the first round, but in the semifinals, her 6.43/213.77 lost to a quick-leaving John Powell, who won with a 6.45/206. At the NHRA Springnationals, Burkett qualified #7 with a 6.48/211.86. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.55/212.21 lost to Arnie Karp's 6.54/214. Bunny ran 6.337/225.22 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/87 to Qualify #7; she would Defeat #15 Qualifier Terry Mullins in Round 1 6.384/224.38 to Mullins' Losing 6.445/216.19. She would lose to #11 Qualifier Fred Hagen in the Second round (After it was run twice because the Christmas Tree Malfunctioned the first time) when she was late on the tree with .714 Reaction time to Hagen's .490 RT & her 6.405/222.88 would lose to Hagen's 6.425/222.93 Holeshot. The photo from Columbus 1987 shows her #4 1986 NHRA finish, but she was the IHRA World Champion in 1986. |

Notes: Gottschalk did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Only eleven cars showed, and his 6.55/211.26 qualified #2 behind Ken Veney's 6.50/212. These two would work their way into the final. Bob got a solo in the opening round because Vern Moats had crashed during qualifying. Bob ran 6.62/211.26 to advance. In round two, he got another solo when Gary Southern broke and ran 6.62/210.28. He then got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and went 6.74/205.01. As good as his times were, Veney had been running 6.5's to reach the final. They then had the quickest and fastest side by side at the time, with 6.687/209.30 to Veney's 6.573/209.79 in the finals at Gators 81. He was at Indianapolis early in May for the NHRA Division Three opener. A 6.76/208.33 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.78/204.08 advanced when Joe Comella broke. In the semi-finals, he ran 6.76/209.30 to defeat Don Gerardot's better 6.73/206. But once again came up against Veney in the final, and the results were the same. Ken's 6.59/213 got the victory over Bob's 6.96/207.85 runner-up effort. He got his first NHRA victory at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 for the race at 6.82/204.08. Carl Ruth failed to show for the first-round race due to the rain delay. Gottschalk advanced with an easy 7.07/198.67. In the second round, he beat Gregg Gorman with a 6.84/203.16. The semi-finals saw his 6.83/203.16 take out Jerry Gwynn's 6.91/202. He faced Lee Zeinert in the final, and Bob's 6.83/203.16 got the win over Lee's 6.86/204. Shortly after that, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals, where he qualified second with a 6.67/206.89 behind Gwynn's 6.57/207. A 6.70/206.89 in the first round beat Steve Group's 6.93/193. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and went 6.68/206.42. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.66/206.42 in the semi-final against Southern, who won with a 6.72/203. Comp number changed from 3312 to 317. Photo from 1981 NHRA SpringNationals, Columbus. |

Notes: Winner at NHRA D6 Nl'akapxm BC 1989 with a 6.19 230.42 over Roger Bateman. Early in August, Bucky was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. His 6.07/230.53 qualified second behind Chris Christensen's 6.00/234. In the opening round, his 6.14/229.41 defeated Mike Gordon's 6.27/221. Terry Mullins fouled against him in round two, and he advanced with a 6.12/229.82. Another 6.12 at 228.83 stopped Lou Gasparelli's 6.20/223 in the semifinal. He faced Pat Austin for the title. Pat qualified third and had run steady 6.0s to reach the final. But this was Bucky's day, and a consistent 6.12/228.19 scored him his first NHRA National event win over Pat's 6.15/226. Sometimes's uncle knows best! The following week (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Nightfire Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.60/212.68. He soloed with a 6.50/213.69 when Vic Phillips broke. His times continued to improve in the semifinal, where his 6.40/217.83 (Top Speed) beat John Weaver's 6.60/212. This time, his final-round opponent was Rick Henkelman. Once again, Bucky picked up the trophy, running Low ET at 6.37/216.78 to win over Rick's 6.59/206 runner-up effort. Photo from Columbus 1989 (far lane). Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 89/90, Volume 5, Number 1. |

Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the off season he would build up a new motor which had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part time effort, he did quite well against the full time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin) |
