Notes: Pete qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.38/219.40. In the first round, his 6.39/221.40 lost to Danny Townsend's 6.34/220. The following week, he was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. A 6.24/223.88 qualified #1, and in the opening round, his 6.36/222.22 stopped John Samolyk's 6.40/215. In the semi-final, both he and Frank Manzo ran 6.30 (Gallen at 224.43), but Manzo got the "win" light. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. This was another eight-car field; his 6.27/223.49 qualified second to Manzo's 6.14/227. These two would meet in the final. Herb Rodgers broke against him in the first round, and Pete advanced with a 6.27/222.44. Samolyk failed to show for his semi-final race with him, so he made a 6.29/222.93 solo. Manzo had the performance advantage here, and it held in the final, where Frank's 6.14/226 got the victory over Gallen's 6.26/222.99. His next stop was at Quaker City Dragway on July 10 for the third NHRA Division Three race. He qualified #1 at 6.45/217.39 and then ran 6.49/211.26 in round one over Shad Wheeler's 6.55/210. That was followed by a 6.51/211.76 in the semi-final that beat Don Defluiter's 6.58/210. He faced Don Gay Jr. in the final and ended up with another runner-up finish as his 6.48/212.26 finished second to Gay's 6.42/217. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Finished number two in Division 1 Pro Comp with 1100 points. Finished number one in Division 1 in 1973 (comp number 11). Ran 7.16 at Maple Grove, 7.17 at Englishtown, 7.05 at Indy. | Glen qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.17/193.76. He got out of shape in the first round, but his 7.73/184.42 still beat Dick Thorn's off pace 7.63/187. Glen had more traction troubles in round two where his 7.54/184.04 lost to Les Cassidy. He qualified #6 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.18. He improved to 7.13 in the first round, to beat Don Irvin and in round two, a 7.07 beat Bob Buccini. The 7.07 was a career best, but it was short-lived as he ran a 7.05/193.13 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 7.08/200. | Originally listed at 6.825/201.34, but I now believe that at least the 6.825 was from 1975. - BP |

Notes: Ken started his season at the OCIR season opener on January 17. It was an eight-car show with all cars running two rounds and the two lowest ETs advancing to the final. Veney ran 6.76/204.08 to beat Ken Randolph in the first round, but the Vega broke in his second race, and he could not race Sherm Gunn. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. His 6.91/203.16 qualified #2 behind Dale Armstrong's 6.79/206. Ken improved to 6.86/205.47 in round one to stop Jimmy Scott's 7.21/196. A second-round 6.91/206.89 advanced over Mark Niver's broken dragster. A semifinal 6.86/207.85 over Gunn set up a final-round meeting with Armstrong. Dale had the advantage as he had been running 6.7s throughout eliminations. But in the final, he lost a clutch and slowed to 11.57/55.28, while Veney picked up the victory with a 7.43/203.61. Ken kept up the pressure at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.73 (Low ET) at 209.30. An opening round 6.78/209.79 beat Rick Williamson. He stayed consistent with his 6.81/209.30, beating a tire-shaking Brad Anderson in round two. He got Top Speed of the Meet with his semifinal 6.78/210.28 to take out Jeg Coughlin's 6.95/197. He went up against Jerry Darien in the final, and Veney knocked off another 6.78/203.61 to get the victory over Darien's 7.38/191. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet but was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Armstrong, his toughest competitor, outqualified him there, but his 6.85/210.28 wasn't too far behind Dale's 6.78/204. Ken was out for another victory, and it showed. He dumped Vern Moat's 7.13/200 in the first round with a 6.98/208.81. A second-round 6.97/209.81 beat a tire-smoking Joe Amato, and in the semifinals, his tire-shaking 7.27/208.33 luckily advanced over Coughlin's troubled 9.36/83. He faced Bill Wallace in the final, and Bill's off-pace 7.69/148 lost to Veney's 7.15/211.26. His next stop was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. There, he actually got beat! His 7.26 in the semifinals lost to Wilfred Boutilier's 7.05. Ken also won the Cajun Nationals and the Springnationals, running 209.30 and defeating Kevin Siebert in the final with a 6.94/206. He qualified #4 at Indy (need times). In round one, he beat Jeff Rapp, 6.79/206.42 to 6.92/197. Ken ran 6.83/206.89 in round two as Wilfred Boutilier got crossed up and shut off. Round three saw Ken run 6.85/205.94 to defeat Chase Knight, who fouled. However, Ken fell off to a 6.92/202.70 in the semis, and that was enough to allow eventual winner Dave Settles to sneak by at 6.76/200. Beautiful race car. |

Notes: Arnie was at Englishtown on May 3 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.50/214.28 behind Frank Manzo's 6.40/221. These two would work their way into the final. Karp beat Ed Parker in the first round, with a 6.43/214.79 and a 6.45/213.77 in the semifinals beat John Samolyk. Manzo held his edge and beat Karp for the title in the final. At the IHRA Springnationals, he lasted until the second round before fouling against Bob Newberry. He did much better at the next IHRA event, the Summernationals at Atco. Karp's 6.39/218.97 beat Carol Burkett's quicker 6.37/218 in the final. He was in Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 6.57/211.86 qualified #15. An opening round 6.54/214.38 beat Burkett's 6.55/212. A second-round 6.59/213.42 fell to Fred Mandoline's 6.50/214. The following week (June 21), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals, combined with a Division 1 race. Karp qualified #2 with a 6.45/215.31. Another 6.45 at 214.79 in the first round, beat Dick Bell's 6.49/214, but in the semifinals, his 6.41 (Low ET) at 216.86 lost to Pete Gallen's 6.42/217. The following week (June 28), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Karp qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.51/214.74. In the opening round, his 6.58/213.06 defeated Herb Rogers, and in the semifinal, he ran 6.48/214.64 over low qualifier Al DaPozzo's 6.57/209. He faced Gallen in the final, and Arnie fouled, shutting down to 12.91 for the runner-up spot. Shortly after that (July 5), he went to Milan Dragway and won the IHRA Northern Nationals. Steady 6.4's got him the win as he beat Dan Nimmo with a 6.42/220.04 and Don Gerardot with a 6.43/220.04. He faced Newberry in the final, and Bob had been advancing with 6.3's. But a quick leave, combined with a 6.43/217, got Karp the victory over Newberry's slightly better 6.42/221. Only fourteen cars showed at Englishtown in what was supposed to be a sixteen-car field for the NHRA Summernationals. Qualifying wasn't a big deal, but Karp still hammered out a 6.50/212.66 to qualify #6. He improved to 6.48/214.28 in round one, to beat George Peters. He had a close race against Burkett in round two that saw his 6.50/213.42 fall to her 6.49/214. Brainerd was his next stop for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. This was an eight-car show, and he qualified #4 at 6.47/215.10. Arnie was late off the line in round one, and his 6.44/214.38 lost to Danny Townsend's 6.50/212. He next stopped off at Norwalk at the end of August for the IHRA World Nationals. Karp ran as well as 6.46/220.05, but he lost to Bogie Kell in the final. Everyone was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Over 30 cars were attempting to qualify. Arnie's 6.35/221.18 qualified #10. In round one, he upset the #2 qualifier, Gallen, with a 6.39/223.04 to Peter's 6.42/225. But in round two, he was upset. The only Rodeck powered car to qualify, driven by John Powell, ran 6.40/218 to beat his 6.39/219.72. Speaking about upsets, it was surprising that the "Boston Strangler" failed to qualify at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Karp's 6.44/215.77 was the first alternate for the eight-car field. The race was pushed back a week due to rain, so Arnie left and went to Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. There he qualified #1. His 6.345/224.43 set a new IHRA speed record in the second round while defeating Newberry. Dal Denton fouled against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.42/222.77. He faced Greg Moss in the final, and Karp was unstoppable as he ran 6.34/220.58 for the victory. 6.354 221.18 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/87. Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. Photo from Indy 1987. |

Notes: This was a strong runner in '87. Mike started the season at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener on January 18 (NHRA D7 Phoenix AZ 1/18/87). He qualified #1 with a 6.31 (Low ET) at 217.39 which was almost two tenths ahead of the #2 qualifier. Unfortunately, in round one, he slowed to a 6.40/215.82 while his competition Pat Austin picked up to a 6.38/216 to beat him. At the NHRA Winternationals, he again set Low ET in running a 6.251 at 221.56 to qualify first. He beat Chuck Beal's 6.40/217 in the first round, with a 6.33/221.45. In round two his 6.43/219.40 took out Terry Mullins, but in the semifinals, Mike's off-pace 6.64/215.00 lost to Pat Austin's 6.33/220. On April 11, Grieco won over an eight-car field at Firebird for the Coors Funny Car event. Of course, he again qualified #1 with a 6.33 (Low ET). Another 6.33/214.79 in the first round, advanced and in the semifinals, his 6.40/214.79 beat Tony Lewis' Camaro. In the final he was up against Brad Anderson and Mike's 6.39/215.31 beat Brad's 6.45/213. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont on April 26. Mike beat John Weaver with a 6.40/216.86 in the first round, but in round two he encountered severe tire shake and lost control. He crashed hard into the guardrail, and he had to be treated for a concussion and minor hand injuries. The car was badly damaged. |

Notes: Photo from 1975 US Nationals. Confirmed 198.67 from Indy 1975. Moved times of 6.802/212 from the 1974 entry (too fast for 1974). We need to confirm John's best times during these years. A 212 in 1975 might be too stout, too. | John was at Edgewater for the UDRA Memorial Day Weekend Championships. Carter beat Bob McConnell in the opening round with a 7.23. In round two, a 7.26 beat Dave Sebring. He faced Ken Veney in the semifinals and despite running a quicker 7.28, he lost to Veney's 7.29. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 87/88, Volume 2, Number 9. | Harold was at Ennis in the beginning of March for the WDRS where he qualified #4 with a 6.287/222.05. Harold would face #8 qualifier Chuck Phelps in round 1. Harold would get the victory with 6.26/223.65. The semi finals would see Lewelling facing #2 Qualifier Don Gay Jr. Lewelling's 6.29/218.60 was no match for the eventual runner up Gay's 6.200/221.29. | Harold was at State Capitol Raceway at the end of March for the NHRA Division 4 race. He qualified #3 with a 6.42/216.34. In the first round, opponent Burl Brown fouled and Lewelling's 6.48/212.76 advanced. Another 6.42 at 209.30 in the semifinals beat Bill Wendt's 6.52/198. He went up against Larry Reep in the final and the two had a close race with Harold's 6.39/214.28 getting the victory over Reep's 6.41/216. Shortly after that, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. It was another eight-car field and his 6.27/222.11 qualified #4. An even better 6.25/208.96 beat Carol Burkett's 6.33/217 in the opening round, but he broke against Brad Anderson in the semifinal. The next Division Four race was held at Gulfport Dragway on April 12. Harold qualified #1 with a 6.60/201.79. But in round one, he slowed to 6.81/202.70 and lost to Reep's 6.70/209. He made a trip to DeSoto Memorial for the NHRA Division 2 race in May. He qualified #6 with a 6.58/209.30. In the first round, his 6.55/217.91 lost to Burkett's 6.46/215. The following week (May 24), he was back at State Capitol (Baton Rouge) for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.47/214.64 qualified #3, but once again he got beat in round one. This time, his 6.56/208.28 lost to Mike Haddox's 6.49/215. |

Notes: 22 IHRA. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Terry was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 6.55/219.67 qualified #13. He improved to 6.42/220.04 to advance in the opening round when Bret Williamson fouled. But in round two, he had problems against Mike Grieco and shut down to a losing 7.81/117.61. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Division 2 race. The original date was supposed to be on March 8, but after qualifying, the weather forced the race to be postponed a week until March 15. Only three cars returned. Terry had led qualifying with a 6.52/211.26 so in round one, he got the solo. He made an easy 7.35/113.06 to advance to the final. His opponent there was Porter Donn. Terry got the victory with a 6.56/215.31 over Donn's 6.86/200. The following week (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.46/219.94 qualified #15. In round one, he got out on John Samolyk and his 6.65/211.66 held on to win over John's 6.56/217. But a second round 6.44/216.50 lost to eventual winner Pat Austin's 6.31/222. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 6.51/213.52. He faced Austin in the first round, and he gambled on the tree. He fouled away a 6.45 while Austin advanced with a 6.38. He was on the "bump" again at the next Division 2 race held at DeSoto Memorial. There, he lost to John Powell in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he lasted until round two before losing to Dick Bell. 6.383 218.56 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/87. |

Notes: Newberry's first Corvette burned to the ground at Englishtown. This S&W-built car was going to be the AA/FC Gold Coast Charger, but Bob bought it to compete for the year. Bob was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener in Atlanta on March 10. Only six cars showed for the eight-car field and his 6.78/181.08 qualified last. He shut off in the first round against Bogie Kell. He did much better the following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.55/217.90 qualified #6, and in round one, his 6.71/217.28 beat Barry Paton. In the second round, Terry Mullins fouled, and Bob advanced with a 7.42/135.74 shut-off pass. In the semifinals, his 6.70/217.07 lost to Vern Moats' 6.48/211. He scored a victory on April 14 at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.69/214.28 beat Carl Ruth's 7.10/203. In the semifinal, he stopped Dick Bell with a 6.86/202.24. His final-round opponent was supposed to be Frank Manzo, but his new car broke while winning his semifinal race. The "break rule" was in effect, so Carol Henson became his final round victim. Bob ran 6.99/209.54 to win over Henson's 7.12/201. The following weekend, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 with a 6.42/218.12 behind Ken Veney's 6.41/217. Another strong 6.45/217.18 beat Steve Group's 6.77/210 in the opening round and his 6.51/216.45 in the semifinal beat Terry Mullins' 6.73/205. He faced Vern Moats in the final, and Moats was tough as he had set Low ET in his semifinal race at 6.38. Both fell off in the final, but Vern's 6.72/217 crossed the stripe ahead of Bob's 6.79/205.38. On May 5, he picked up another victory at the NHRA Division One opener at Englishtown. He qualified #4 at 6.56/216.34 and then ran 6.5s to reach the final. In round one, his 6.53/216.34 took out Larry Dobbs' 6.80/204. When John Paris broke, he used a 6.58/216.08 to advance in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Manzo in the final. Newberry proved he was up to the task by running 6.49/216.60 to win over Manzo's 6.53/217. He also won the second NHRA Division One race at Cayuga Dragway Park. Only four alcohol FCs showed up for this event, and Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with his 6.72/210.28. A 6.80/212.76 beat Dobbs' 7.04/185 in the first round, and in the final, he sewed up Top Speed of the Meet with his 6.79/212.76, getting the win over Carol Burkett's off-pace,7.33/187. He stopped in at Atco for a best-of-three-match race with Manzo. Bob won the match two straight by running times of 6.60/214.79 and 6.73/176.12. Manzo wasn't far behind, running a 6.68/215 best. Yet another win came over an eight-car field at Connecticut on May 26. He got a solo in round one and ran 6.61/212.26. In the semifinal, he sped up to a 6.58/217.91 to drop Ruth's 6.84/204. He stayed in the 6.5s in the final with his 6.59/216.84, beating Bell's 6.64/211 for the money. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. Newberry qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 218.44. But he was upset in the first round when eventual winner Moats ran 6.47/217 to beat his 6.48/216.03 in a very close race. He didn't have to wait overly long to get another win as it came the very next weekend (June 9) at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.40 (Low ET) at 216.08. His string of 6.4s here was too much, as no one else could run better than 6.71 during eliminations. He opened up with a 6.47/217.12 to take out Bell's 6.77/209, and in the semifinal, a 6.45/217.39 stopped Paris' 6.74/205. It was another one-sided final as Bob ran 6.43/218.18 (Top Speed) for the victory over Burkett's 6.70/202. Bob ran 6.338/223.32 at NHRA Sanair QC in June for his best speed of the year. He also ran 221.67 at the NHRA WWCS Bowling Green event on August 25. Bob qualified #3 with a 6.318/221.23 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A first-round 6.41/218.12 beat alternate Carl Ruth's 6.54/212. But in the semifinals, his 6.40/219.94 lost to Vern Moats' 6.37/218. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |
