Notes: AKA Bealmobile. | At the NHRA Division 6 Opener on April 12 at Fremont, Beal ran 6.57 (Low ET) at 210.28 to qualify first. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and slowed to a 7.65/140.84 that lost to Gary Southern's 6.73/204. Chuck won the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo on May 17. His 7.26/201.20 beat a fouling James Brown in the final. Beal made it into the final at the NHRA Western Regional at Bandimere on May 30. To get there he had beaten Jim Eberly in the first round, with a 7.16/193.96 while a semifinal 7.14/193.96 advanced when Jack Holsey fouled away a 7.03/196. He faced Southern in the final and his 7.20/192.30 finished runner-up to Gary's 7.04/195.65. |

Notes: Sebring won the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals at Rockingham. It was his first IHRA final, and he set Low ET with a 6.31/220.58 to win over Gary Cellone's 6.34/215. Dave qualified #6 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.47/217.33. Unfortunately, he had problems on the run and could not make his first-round race against Vern Moats. | Ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | The Drag Racing List, December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, listed 6.316/221.13. We need to validate the third digit on the 6.31 from Rockingham. |

Notes: Manzo debuted his new Bob Jinkens-built Firebird Trans Am at Englishtown on April 14 for the Spring Funny Car Bonanza race. It was an eight-car show, and the new car performed well, setting Low ET at 6.65 before breaking while winning his semifinal race over Dennis Bedrosian. The following week (April 21), he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.54/214.59 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut off to a 7.57 loss to Terry Mullins, who advanced with a 6.75. He almost won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 5. There Manzo had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.43/220.31. He made his way to the final by running 6.62/218.18 over Dick Bell in round one, while a 6.55/218.97 beat a fouling Carol Burkett in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Bob Newberry. The two put on a great race, but Bob's 6.49/216 got the victory over Frank's 6.53/217.64 runner-up effort. He then went to Maple Grove for the Spring Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with all eight cars making a run against each other, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the semifinals. Manzo's 6.41 at a track record 218.97 was the quickest of the eight. He ran the identical numbers in his semifinal race over Pat Walsh and then went on to win by running 6.37 (Low ET) at another new track speed record of 219.51. He then went to Atco for a best of three match race against Newberry. It wasn't his day as in the first race, his 6.68/215.82 lost to Bob's 6.60/214, and in the second race, he smoked the tires to a 6.94/187.11 that lost the race and the match to Newberry's 6.73. On June 2, Manzo went to Beech Bend Raceway for the NHRA Sportsnationals. A 6.47/217.70 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field. But Frank was unable to run in eliminations and was replaced in the field by first alternate Pat Austin. | At the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Sanair Frank qualified #3 for the 8 car field with a 6.343/226.70. In round 1 he faced #7 qualifier Arnie Karp & Manzo ran 6.444/221.02 to Karp's losing 6.587/211.96. In the Semis, "Ace" ran #1 Qualifier Bob Newberry, Manzo ran 6.426/222 in his losing effort to the eventual winner Newberry's 6.338/221.45. At the next NHRA National Event, the Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown, Manzo qualified #2 for the 16 car field with a 6.328/221.89. He would defeat #10 qualfier Carl Ruth in round 1 6.365/221.13 to Ruth's losing 6.63/212.76. #6 qualifier John Samolyk in Round 2 with a 6.504/216.45 & #4 Qualifier Carol Henson in the Semis with a 6.518/216.03 to Henson's losing 6.685/215.31. In the final, Once again he would Face Bob Newberry the #3 qualifier. Manzo would win the event with a 6.417/217.91 to Newberry's 6.478/216.03 but was overshadowed by Newberry's car becoming a blazing inferno in the shutdown. | He was the second alternate at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals with a 6.50/215.82 best. Frank won the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. It wasn't apparent that he would win when he qualified last in the eight-car field with a 6.39/220. He advanced past the first round with a 6.75 when Arnie Karp crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, he stepped up to a 6.34/221.56 over Gary Cellone's 6.41/216. In the final, he won easily with a 6.39/221.13 when final round opponent Vern Moats broke. |

Notes: Dale was driving this car at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He reached the final by beating Butch Osmon and Donn Griffith. He faced Billy Williams for the title, and Dale smoked the tires and shut down while Williams ran 6.68/207 for the win. | As I recall, Dale had sold his Satellite to Carter-Holsey-Braden but was still in the Grace Cup points chase. So, he borrowed G+Ms Vega/Monza to finish the season. He had also sold his alky dragster to the team of Baker, Stanton, and Walker. - Tim S |

Notes: Took home 23 wins during 77/78, including eleven PRO and AHRA national events. He also brought in the '77 PRO BB/FC Championship and the '78 AHRA BB/FC World Championship. Also ran AHRA nitro shows. Menzies ran 6.76 at Columbus, Indy, and Seattle in 1977 also. Also ran 6.76 at IHRA Union Grove. The 6.76 was recorded as the season-best in Greg Zyla's Vallco drag racing game with a 6.87 average, but Simon actually ran a best of 6.68 at Fremont, beating Lou Gasparrelli's 6.64 on a holeshot. Worse than that for Lou, his chutes did not come out, and he damaged the front end. - Simon Menzies, Draglist LIVE, 11/15/21 | At the '77 Manufacturer's Meet, Menzies took a wild ride in the 'Vette, spinning out and losing the body. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Al was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.35/214.59. In the first round, both he and his opponent Bogie Kell ran 6.40 (DaPozzo at 217.07), but Al got the win. In the semifinals, he lost a close race to Don Gay Jr. DaPozzo's 6.36/217.12 lost to Gay's 6.34/220. The following week (May 3), he won the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. A 6.50/207.85 qualified #3, and he stayed consistent, running 6.51/210.77 and 6.50/213.27 to reach the final. He faced Steve Group in the final, and another 6.50 at 212.26 got the victory over Steve's 6.52/211. He qualified #3 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.47/208.62. In the opening round, his opponent, Richard Smith, failed to show, and Al ran 6.54/208.28 to advance. In round two, his 6.49/207.66 dropped Frank Manzo's 6.57/201. He had a close race against Brad Anderson in the semifinal that saw both drivers run 6.56 (Al at 201.43), but DaPozzo got the win. He faced Vern Moats in the final, and Vern broke a piston while Al ran 6.56/212.26 for his first career NHRA victory. Shortly after, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/210.72. He improved to 6.46/212.81 in the first round to beat Dick Bell's 6.49/215. But he fell off to 6.57/209.54 in the semifinal and lost to Arnie Karp's 6.48/214. The following week, he was at Quaker City Dragway for the NHRA Division Three race. Only six cars showed, and his 6.66/205.94 qualified #3. He beat Jim Bailey in the first round with a 6.67/206.89, but he fouled away a 6.65/197.36 against eventual winner Group in the semifinal. He ran 6.335/229.80 at NHRA Indianapolis.
