Notes: Bartone did not race at the season's first two NHRA National events. He was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his 5.86/241.80 qualified #4. In the opening round, his 5.97/238.28 fell to Frank Manzo's 5.87/240. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.98/236.40 qualified #7. Terry Mullins fouled away a 6.01/232 against him in the first round, and Tony advanced with a 6.03/235.17. In the second round, both he and Manzo ran 5.92 (Bartone at 236.77), but the "Ace" got the "win" light. Photo from the 1994 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: The "Boston Strangler" team had one of its best seasons ever in '88. In mid-March, the season started with a runner-up finish at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.25/220 qualified #3. It looked like Karp's day was done in the semi-final when he smoked the tires and shut off against Art Hendey, but Art crossed the centerline, and Arnie found himself in the final with Dal Denton. Once again, the "Boston Strangler" had its tires go up in smoke, and Denton grabbed the win. The following week (March 20), the team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Arnie qualified #1 with a 6.16/226.58. He beat Larry Reep in the opening round with a 6.18/227.04, followed by a 6.19/223.32 in round two that defeated Hendey. Bob Newberry's transmission broke in the semi-final, and Karp ran 6.17/226.52 to advance. He faced Pat Austin in the final, and Karp had problems and shut down to 10.72/77.92 in a runner-up finish to Austin's 6.19/226. Yet another runner-up finish followed on March 27 at DeSoto for the IHRA Supernationals, where he finished second to Hendey. In April, he was in Texas for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 6.17/226.52 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.16/227 in the first round. He set both ends of the IHRA record in the second round with a 6.14/228.60. Unfortunately, he lost to Newberry's 6.15/226 on that run. On May 1st, he won the NHRA Division One opener at Englishtown. His 6.16/224.43 qualified #3. A 6.34/223.88 in round one beat Ed Parker's 6.56/215. He and the low qualifier had a great race in the semi-finals, where both ran 6.17 (Arnie at 227.27), but Karp got the "win" light. In the final, his 6.14/229.59 got the victory over Peter Gallen's 6.20/227. The following week, he won the Spring FC Nationals at Maple Grove. He set Top Speed at 225.00 before beating John Samolyk's 6.23/222 in the final with a quick-leaving 6.31/210.77. He also won the third NHRA Division One race held at Maryland International near the end of May. His 6.32/220.48 qualified second to Newberry's 6.28/223. In round one, a 6.35/220.75 beat Parker's 6.69/209. Gallen fouled against him in the semi-final, and Arnie advanced with a 6.34/216. It looked like he was in trouble for the final as he faced Newberry, who had run quicker and faster on every run. But Karp picked it up in the final, setting Low ET with his 6.27/222.77 defeating Newberry's 6.36/223. His next stop was at Atco in the first week of June for the IHRA Summernationals. He lasted until the semi-final before fouling away a 6.27/225 against Denton's 6.32/221. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.30/223.26. In round one, he got a free ride when Al DaPozzo failed to show and ran 6.45/220.15. But he was late off the line in round two, and his 6.39/222.33 lost to eventual winner Tommy Johnson Jr's 6.42/218. The team was not running up to par near the end of the month at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. Karp's 6.44/217.39 "only" qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.48/215.82 fell to Frank Manzo's 6.37/219. Manzo also got him in the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Arnie's 6.37/219.51 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Manzo in the opening round. Frank's 6.20 easily beat Arnie's 6.44. Photo from Columbus 1988. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 1988, Volume 3, Number 3. | Samolyk won his first IHRA National event at the IHRA Fallnationals in September at Bristol. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.36/214.08 behind pole sitter, Frank Manzo's 6.32/217. These two would work their way to the final. John beat Jim Bailey in the first round, with a 6.37/205.85 and in round two his 6.39/205.33 put Dave Sebring on the trailer. He improved to 6.30/219.56 in the semifinals to stop Arnie Karp's 6.34/222 from advancing. He ran his best in the final, a 6.29 at 213.32, but it wasn't his ET that gave him the win, it was his quick reaction time as Manzo ran a quicker 6.24/221. |

Notes: This was the car to beat in '87. In January, Brad started the year at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified #4 with a 6.56/200.00. A first-round 6.52/213.77 advanced when Kenny Mooers failed to show. In the semifinals, Brad's 6.51/210.77 beat Mike Haddox's 6.61/194. This put him into the final against Pat Austin. Brad's final round 6.57/182.18 finished second best to Austin's 6.43/215. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.49/211.11. He improved to 6.46/213.72 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Vern Moats' 6.35/222. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.38/218.76 qualified #9. He faced low qualifier Moats in the first round and got some "revenge" for his loss to him at Pomona by running 6.42/207.18 to win as Vern fouled away a 6.38. Brad didn't stick around long after that, as his off-pace 7.19/141.08 in round two lost to Bob Newberry's 6.34/222. Everything "clicked" at the inaugural NHRA Winston All-Star race held at the Texas Motorplex in the first week of April. It was an eight-car field, and Brad's 6.20/223.38 qualified second to Moats' 6.12/226. In round one, Anderson ran 6.19/224.27 to defeat Danny Townsend's 6.28/220. His competition, Harold Lewelling, broke in the semifinal, so Brad advanced with a 6.26/222.33. He faced Pat Austin in the final. Pat had beaten Moats in the semifinal. The two had a great race that saw Anderson's 6.22/224.66 get the win over Austin's 6.24/223. The following week, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's FC race. He made it into the final of the eight-car show by running 6.42/214.79 over Billy Williams and 6.44/212.76 over Bob Miner. He faced Mike Grieco in the final, and Mike was far from being the underdog as he had qualified #1 and was running quicker than Brad in every round. Sure enough, Brad's 6.45/213.77 in the final finished second best to Mike's 6.39/215. Another runner-up finish came at the second NHRA Division Seven race held at Baylands Raceway on April 26. This was a sixteen-car field, and Anderson qualified second to Grieco. In the opening round, a 6.38/217.39 took out Gary Shane's 6.60/199. He followed that up with another 6.38 at 216.34 to beat Mark Woznichak's 6.79/203 in round two. In the semifinal, he improved to 6.33/218.44 to beat Chuck Beal's 6.53/213. But in the final, he was upset by Bret Williamson. He made up for that by winning the third NHRA Division Seven race held at Famoso the following week. He had "only" qualified third for the sixteen-car field, but he picked it up once eliminations started. A 6.43/218.97 beat Williams' 6.91/206 in the first round. Round two saw a 6.45/218.97 take out Miner's 6.59/208. He ran a really close race against Williamson in the semifinal that saw both run 6.47 (Brad at 218.44), but he got the "win" light. In the final, he beat Lou Gasparelli's 6.48/215 with a 6.45/217.39. Shortly after that (May 9), he picked up another win by winning the Baylands Super Star Challenge race. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified second to Williamson. These two would meet in the final. Don Moffitt fouled against him in round one, and Brad's 6.33/215.82 advancedMiner had problems against him in the semifinal and shut off while Brad ran 6.37/215.31. In the final, he slowed to 6.43/209.79, but it was more than enough to cover Bret's 6.66/171. Another week, another win; he won the next NHRA Division Seven race held at Los Angeles Country Raceway on May 17. This race was an eight-car show, and Anderson's 6.57/208.81 qualified #1. He set Top Speed in round one with his 6.57/209.30 beating Jim Holtz's 6.88/198. An easy 6.62/207.85 beat Rick Henkelman's troubled 8.35 in the semifinal. Gasparelli's car broke in the final, so Brad set Low ET while winning, running 6.55/209.30 for the victory. Brad was the low qualifier at 1987 US Nationals at 6.235, and he ran 6.201 at Ennis Chiefs but ran into Pat Austin's 6.173. Photo from Columbus 1987. |

Notes: Denton was at Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.35/222.99 qualified #4. A 6.37/223.26 beat Buster Chandler's 6.48/213 in the opening round. In the semi-final, he improved to 6.31/224.10, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Gay Jr's 6.25/220. Dal Denton won the 1988 IHRA World Championship in his own car. Dal drove for Simpson for part of the year in NHRA races. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List, Winter 89/90, Volume 5 Number 1. | Lou was at Sonoma on July 30 for the NHRA California Nationals. He was running a new PSI blower at this race. Lou qualified #2 with a career-best (to this point) 6.07/228.94 behind Pat Austin's 6.05/233. An opening round 6.10/227.44 beat Tom Bristow’s 6.23/200, but he had all kinds of problems in the second round. He was up against David Baca and after leaving the line together, Gasparelli’s transmission broke, which in turn caused the engine to over rev and blow. A week later (August 6), he was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. A 6.13/226.13 qualified #4. In the first round, he improved to 6.11/228.23 to beat John Weaver's 6.32/216 and he repeated that number in round two with a speed of 227.27 to beat Baca's 6.27/218. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 6.20/223.26 that lost to eventual winner Bucky Austin's 6.12/228. |

Notes: Wrecked at the Texas Motorplex. Photo from Columbus 1987. Another of the venerable cars that carried the Gay Bros. Infinity name. AAFCC Racer. | Don was at Gulfport Dragway on April 12 for the NHRA Division 4 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.79/204.54. He improved slightly, to 6.72/208.33 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Jimmy Jones' 6.67/202. Gay ran much better at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.32/220.58. A round one 6.35/220.31 beat Peter Gallen and in the semifinals, his6.34/220.69 beat Al DaPozzo's 6.36/217. In the final he faced Frank Manzo. They had a good close race with Manzo getting the win with a 6.32/220 over Don's runner-up 6.38/221.29. |
