Notes: Steve qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.46/222.11. His speed was a career-best (to this point). A first-round 6.57/218.87 beat Chuck Phelps' 6.65/206 while in round two his 6.48/220.58 took out Hans Kuesel's 6.55/211. He had a close race in the semifinals where he just beat Mike Grieco's 6.54/216 with a 6.52/218.76. In the final, he faced low qualifier Brad Anderson. Steve had problems and slowed to 11.95/75.77 while Brad ran 6.55/219 for the victory. He was at Famoso on May 5 for the NHRA Division 6 race. His 6.44/216.89 qualified #2 behind Anderson's 6.39/217. In the semifinals, Kuesel had problems and slowed to 7.82/116, while McGee moved to the finals with a 6.60/191.08. There he met "Bad Brad" for the title. Once again, Anderson got the win when Steve's Camaro broke. These two would qualify one-two at the next NHRA Division 6 race, held at Fremont, as well. Brad's 6.29/223 got the pole while Steve followed with a 6.42/223.32. But in the first round, McGee broke against Tom Lemon. On June 23,he was at Sears Point for the next Division Six race. Notes: Newberry's first Corvette burned to the ground at Englishtown. This S&W-built car was going to be the AA/FC Gold Coast Charger, but Bob bought it to compete for the year. Bob was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener in Atlanta on March 10. Only six cars showed for the eight-car field and his 6.78/181.08 qualified last. He shut off in the first round against Bogie Kell. He did much better the following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.55/217.90 qualified #6, and in round one, his 6.71/217.28 beat Barry Paton. In the second round, Terry Mullins fouled, and Bob advanced with a 7.42/135.74 shut-off pass. In the semifinals, his 6.70/217.07 lost to Vern Moats' 6.48/211. He scored a victory on April 14 at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.69/214.28 beat Carl Ruth's 7.10/203. In the semifinal, he stopped Dick Bell with a 6.86/202.24. His final-round opponent was supposed to be Frank Manzo, but his new car broke while winning his semifinal race. The "break rule" was in effect, so Carol Henson became his final round victim. Bob ran 6.99/209.54 to win over Henson's 7.12/201. The following weekend, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 with a 6.42/218.12 behind Ken Veney's 6.41/217. Another strong 6.45/217.18 beat Steve Group's 6.77/210 in the opening round and his 6.51/216.45 in the semifinal beat Terry Mullins' 6.73/205. He faced Vern Moats in the final, and Moats was tough as he had set Low ET in his semifinal race at 6.38. Both fell off in the final, but Vern's 6.72/217 crossed the stripe ahead of Bob's 6.79/205.38. On May 5, he picked up another victory at the NHRA Division One opener at Englishtown. He qualified #4 at 6.56/216.34 and then ran 6.5s to reach the final. In round one, his 6.53/216.34 took out Larry Dobbs' 6.80/204. When John Paris broke, he used a 6.58/216.08 to advance in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Manzo in the final. Newberry proved he was up to the task by running 6.49/216.60 to win over Manzo's 6.53/217. He also won the second NHRA Division One race at Cayuga Dragway Park. Only four alcohol FCs showed up for this event, and Bob set Low ET in qualifying #1 with his 6.72/210.28. A 6.80/212.76 beat Dobbs' 7.04/185 in the first round, and in the final, he sewed up Top Speed of the Meet with his 6.79/212.76, getting the win over Carol Burkett's off-pace,7.33/187. He stopped in at Atco for a best-of-three-match race with Manzo. Bob won the match two straight by running times of 6.60/214.79 and 6.73/176.12. Manzo wasn't far behind, running a 6.68/215 best. Yet another win came over an eight-car field at Connecticut on May 26. He got a solo in round one and ran 6.61/212.26. In the semifinal, he sped up to a 6.58/217.91 to drop Ruth's 6.84/204. He stayed in the 6.5s in the final with his 6.59/216.84, beating Bell's 6.64/211 for the money. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. Newberry qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.42 (Low ET) at 218.44. But he was upset in the first round when eventual winner Moats ran 6.47/217 to beat his 6.48/216.03 in a very close race. He didn't have to wait overly long to get another win as it came the very next weekend (June 9) at the NHRA Division One race at Maryland International. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.40 (Low ET) at 216.08. His string of 6.4s here was too much, as no one else could run better than 6.71 during eliminations. He opened up with a 6.47/217.12 to take out Bell's 6.77/209, and in the semifinal, a 6.45/217.39 stopped Paris' 6.74/205. It was another one-sided final as Bob ran 6.43/218.18 (Top Speed) for the victory over Burkett's 6.70/202. Bob ran 6.338/223.32 at NHRA Sanair QC in June for his best speed of the year. He also ran 221.67 at the NHRA WWCS Bowling Green event on August 25. Bob qualified #3 with a 6.318/221.23 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A first-round 6.41/218.12 beat alternate Carl Ruth's 6.54/212. But in the semifinals, his 6.40/219.94 lost to Vern Moats' 6.37/218. Photo from 1985 Nationals.

Notes: Fred was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May. It was an eight-car field and his best of 6.62/206.51 failed (third alternate) to make the show. At the NHRA Sportsnationals, he qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.51/218.12. A first-round 6.53/215.20 beat Carol Henson's 6.67/210, but his second round 6.61/217.39 lost to eventual winner Vern Moats at 6.45/217. The following week (June 9), he was at Quaker City Dragway for the second NHRA Division 3 race. His 6.51/212.26 qualified #1, and he went on to win over the eight-car field by beating Mark Thomas in the first round, with a 6.48/213.77 and a semifinal 6.55/214.79 beat Pat Austin. He faced Steve Group in the final and Fred set Low ET of the meet with a 6.42 at 214.28 to get the victory over Group's 6.50/213. He was running really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His two passes in qualifying were 6.33 and 6.322. The 6.322/218.97 qualified #2 behind Moats' 6.28. There were the only two cars that qualified under 6.40. Unfortunately, Mandoline broke in the first round, against Terry Mullins. Fred followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he again qualified #2 with a 6.33/222.88. He defeated Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.36/221.78, but lost to Dennis Bedrosian's 6.43/219 in the semifinals when he fell off to a 6.57/219.94. | At the NHRA WWCW at US 131 8/85 Mandoline qualified #1 with a 6.49/215.82 & would use a 6.44/215.82 to defeat #5 Qualifier Don Gerardot in round 1, a 6.60/217.91 on a semi-finals solo when #3 Qualifier Dan Nimmo was a no show & defeated #6 qualifier Terry Mullins in the final 6.54/210.77 to 6.79/205.01. Fred would Run at Bowling Green a couple weeks later where he set Low ET with 6.42, but finished runner up to Bob Newberry 6.44/221.67 to Mandoline's quicker but losing 6.43/218.92. Mandoline would qualify #11 at the US Nationals with a 6.429/219.61. He would defeat #3 qualifier Charlie Byers on a holeshot in Round 1 6.436/218.97 to Byers's 6.432/220.15. Unfortunately Mandoline red lighted away a 6.456 against #15 qualifier Fred Hagen. At The NHRA Winston Finals in Pomona, Mandoline qualified #3 with a 6.334/223.32. He defeated #11 qualifier Chuck Phelps in round 1 6.591/218.97 to 6.745/215.52. But would lose in Round 2 to #7 qualifier Bucky Austin with a 6.411/222 losing effort to Bucky's 6.366/218.65.

Notes: Mike was at Firebird Raceway at the end of January for the NHRA Division Six opener. Only eight cars showed for the eight-car field, so he ran an easy 7.84/119.04 to qualify #5. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Brad Anderson. Brad's 6.58/218 beat his 6.73/213.27. At Pomona, his 6.37/221.13 qualified second to Anderson's 6.32/225 for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.59/216.65 beat alternate Jett Field in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.65/218.55 defeated Lou Gasparelli's 6.67/212. In the semi-final, Mike's 6.54/216.45 lost to Steve McGee's 6.52/218. In the first week of April, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's FC Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.67/219.51 in the first round lost to eventual winner Anderson's 6.51/214. The next NHRA Division Six race was held at Bakersfield early in May. Grieco's 6.50/222.77 (Top Speed) qualified #5. He was upset in round one, where his 6.76/187.11 fell to Mike Shaw's 6.70/205. Shortly after that (May 19), he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #3 at 6.43/218.97. In the first round, both he and Gasparelli ran 6.44 (Grieco at 216.86), but Mike got the "win" light. In the second round, Kenny Mooers' 6.74/205 fell to his 6.51/215.82. He fouled away a 6.53/216.34 against Anderson in the semi-final. He had to take the chance as Brad advanced with a 6.29/225. Photo from 1985 Pomona. | Car sold to Chuck Worsham.

Notes: Dennis Drove Ron's car at the 1985 Budweiser Summernationals at Englishtown, where Dennis qualified #5 with a 6.436/216.34. In Round 1, Bedrosian faced #13 Qualifier Ed Parker, where Bedrosian got the easy 6.490/216.97 Victory after Parker red-lighted away a 6.636. Bedrosian then faced #1 Qualifier Gary Cellone in round 2 & Bedrosian got the holeshot victory with a 6.511/213.77 to Cellone's losing 6.489/216.03. Bedrosian would face #3 Qualifier Bob Newberry in the semis. Unfortunately, Bedrosian's 6.558/214.48 was no match for the eventual runner-up, Newberry's 6.495/216.45. Then, at the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Bedrosian qualified #7 for the eight car field with a 6.390 at 222.77. Unfortunately, Bedrosian could not make the first round of Eliminations. Photo from 1986.

Notes: Gary failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals eight-car field. On June 23, Cellone was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #2 with a 6.44/216.87 behind Bob Newberry's 6.35/218. These two would meet in the final. Gary started his run with a 6.40/216.86 over Larry Dobbs' 6.75/204, while a semifinal 6.43/214.28 beat Dennis Bedrosian's 6.50/215. Newberry held the edge throughout eliminations running a best of 6.36, and he held it in the final by running another 6.36/218 to get the victory over Cellone's 6.42/216.86. | At the Buckeye Nationals at Kil-Kare Dragway on 7/20/85, Cellone would win the event by defeating Joe Comella in the final. | At the NHRA Division 1 final in New England, Gary qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.51/213.01. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Newberry. Cellone picked up to a 6.44/207.13 to beat Bob's 6.52/213. Unfortunately, another 6.44 at 215.56 in the semifinals lost to a quick-leaving Dick Bell, who beat him with a 6.50/215. Gary qualified #2 at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove with a 6.318/222.22. He beat Dick Bell's 6.44 in the first round, with a 6.34/218.55. A semifinal 6.41/216.65 lost to Frank Manzo's 6.34/221.

Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the off season he would build up a new motor which had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part time effort, he did quite well against the full time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin)

Notes: Veney had not raced at an NHRA National Event since the '84 U.S. Nationals, but he showed up at Gainesville in March for the Gatornationals. During qualifying, he was having trouble, and the best run he could make was 7.55/116.48. That failed to qualify as he was the first alternate. But Udo Horn qualified his car but had a fire and could not run eliminations. Ken took his place in the field. Lou Gasparelli fouled away a 6.43 against him in the first round, and Veney's Corvette came to life, running 6.54/216.13. He improved to 6.45/215.52 to defeat Charlie Byers in the next round, and a semifinal 6.46/215.62 took out Bogie Kell. He faced Vern Moats in the final, and Moats had trouble and shut down while Veney picked up his 13th career win with a 7.27/207.66. Ken was in Atlanta on April 21 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.41/217.60. An opening round 6.49/215.20 defeated Bogie Kell's 6.62/212. But he slowed to a 6.62/214.79 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Moats' 6.38/220. The following week (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division Three opener. His 6.53 qualified #2 behind Steve Group's 6.44. Veney soloed with a 6.52/212.76 when Greg Moss broke. In the semifinal, his 6.77/208.61 fell to Randy Henning's 6.69/212. He did not compete at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at the Sportsnationals early in June, where he ran 6.63/212.96 to qualify #12. In the opening round, a late leaving 6.58/213.16 lost to Pat Austin's 6.61/212. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.48/214.79 qualified #5. In round one, his 6.60/212.76 defeated Don Gerardot's 6.83/203. But another 6.60 at 207.75 fell to eventual winner Moats' 6.36/220. He followed the NHRA tour into Canada for the Grandnationals held at the end of June. He ran 6.48/221.02 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.58/211.16 lost to Fred Mandoline's 6.36/221. He also lost early at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.53/211 and lasted until round two before losing to Carol Henson. His Veney heads were a springboard to a lucrative fuel head-building career.

Notes: Early '86 National Dragster cited best speed of 221 for Carol during the '85 season. It did not mention where this speed was run. Carol ran a career best of 6.363 at 216 of qualify #5 in the eight-car show at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A first-round 6.51/217.81 lost to Vern Moats' 6.35/219.

Notes: Bell qualified #9 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.61/211.96. He got out of shape in the first round and shut off against low qualifier Vern Moats. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.44/220.58 (Top Speed) qualified #3. In the first round, his 6.45/211.26 beat Leroy Dewdney's 6.76/204. But a strong 6.46/213.27 in the semi-final, lost to Bob Newberry's stronger 6.36/218. At the end of the month, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and he qualified #5 at 6.40/220.26. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Newberry. Dick's 6.50/218.12 lost to Bob's 6.41/219. His next stop was at Englishtown in mid-July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.47/217 qualified #7, and he lasted until round two before his 6.48 lost to Newberry's 6.49. The final NHRA Division One race was held in New England in early August. Bell qualified #3 with a 6.44/217.12.his first-round opponent Ed Parker crossed the centerline, and Bell advanced with a 6.53/214.03. In the semi-final, he cut a good light, and his 6.50/215.56 held on to win over Gary Cellone's quicker,6.44/215. He faced Arnie Karp in the final, and Bell again showed his sharp reflex as his 6.48/214.03 won over Karp's 6.47/214. Shortly after that (August 10), he was at Maple Grove for its FC Nationals. A 6.65 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, he improved to 6.62/193.13, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Newberry's 6.44/215. | Bell qualified #6 at the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove with a 6.376/219.40. He faced #2 qualifier Gary Cellone in round 1 where Bell ran 6.444/219.83 in his losing effort to Cellone's 6.344/218.55.

Notes: Chris was at Firebird Raceway in Jan for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.99/186.33. (It was cold and getting a hold of the track was tough for the alcohol Funny Car's unless your name was Brad Anderson). A first-round 7.38/155.44 beat Mike Reed, and in the semifinals, his 7.22/200.44 advanced when Jim Menoes broke. In the final, he was up against Anderson, who won with a 6.41/223 over Chris' 7.35/199.55. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.66/210.37. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Anderson. Chris pushed the 'tree trying to get an advantage, but he fouled away a 6.61 while Brad advanced with a 6.36. He did not race at the Gatornationals, but on April 6, he was at the Coors Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Mike Shaw in round one, with a 6.79/202.24 while a 6.98/208.81 in the semifinal advanced when Jim Holtz crossed the centerline. Of course, "Bad Brad" was waiting for Christensen in the final, and once again, Anderson got the victory with a 6.66/215 over Chris' 6.81/206.89. Things didn't go too well at Famoso for the NHRA Division 6 race. Chris failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at Fremont, his 6.60/208.81 qualified #9. Unlucky for him, as in round one, low qualifier, Anderson ran 6.34/223 to win while Christensen fouled away a 6.62/212.26.

Notes: Mike showed up at Pomona running Brad Anderson heads and intake manifold. He was also running a new Sid Waterman fuel pump. Seemed to pay off as he qualified easily with a 6.49/217.18 for the #5 spot in the NHRA Winternationals field. He improved slightly to a 6.48 at 216.45 in the first round, to beat Bob Gage, but in round two his 6.51/212.76 lost to eventual winner Brad Anderson's 6.48/219. On May 19 he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. It was a sixteen-car field and his 6.59/209.30 qualified #8. In round one Mike's 6.64/205.47 beat Bret Williamson's 6.69/208 while in round two, he ran a career best (to this point) 6.39/217.39 over Chuck Phelps' 6.66/192. In the semifinals, another strong 6.42/212.76 run stopped Tom Lemon's 6.59/211. This put him into the final with Anderson. Andreotti ran a good 6.52/208.81 was it was no match for "Bad Brad's" 6.25/226.

Notes: At the NHRA Gatornationals, Group qualified #2 in the 16 car field with a 6.336/218.12. In Round 1 he faced #10 Qualifier Terry Mullins where he would lose. | On May 17, 1985, Steve won at D3 WWCS at IRP over Randy Henning. He ran 6.44/213.27 for the number one qualifier, then ran 6.49/212.26 in the final. Randy ran an off pace 8.00. - Al Tracy | Steve was at Quaker City Dragway early in June for the third NHRA Division Three race. His 6.56/208.87 qualified second to Fred Mandoline's 6.51/212. These two raced their way into the final. Steve started by running 6.53/211.26 to advance when Don DeFluiter crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, he ran another 6.53 at 212.26 to defeat Gary Cellone's 6.68/184. Both Fred and Steve were running really well, and in the final, both ran their best ETs of the weekend. Mandoline's 6.42/214 got the victory over Group's 6.50/213.77 runner-up effort. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, he ran 6.43/218.97 to qualify #4. A 6.53/210.77 in the opening round beat alternate,Gregg Gorman. In round two,he beat Dan Nimmo's 6.66/208 with a 6.55/208.04. Things went really bad in his semi-final race against Pat Austin. The car got out of shape after leaving the line. Steve got out of it, thinking that the car would straighten itself out. Instead, it crossed lanes and smacked into the guardrail. He hadn't known that it had kicked out a couple of rods, and he was skating in his own oil. The car was badly damaged, but he was OK.

Notes: Bret was at Sears Point in June for the NHRA Division Six race. His 6.46/218.44 qualified #6. Bob Beatty broke against him in the first round, and his 6.53/215.82 advanced. In the second round, Mike Andreotti slowed to 7.26/157, and Bret won with a 6.61/211.26. In the semi-final, John Weaver fouled, and once again, Bret advanced with a 6.55/216.86. His "free ride" ended in the final, where he went up against low qualifier Brad Anderson. Williamson tried, but his 6.56/212.76 was no match for Brad's 6.36/226. Bret was at Fremont for its independent Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.43 qualified #5. A 6.46/218.44 beat Pat Austin's 6.58/214 in the first round, and in round two, his 6.44/214.79 fell to eventual winner Anderson's 6.35/225.

Notes: Hank was in Seattle in August for the NHRA Division Six race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.71 qualified #7. Unfortunately, the car broke against alternate Roger Bateman in the opening round of competition. He was at Fremont for its independent Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.40 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.49/218.44 beat Don Moffitt. Johnson cut a good light in the second round that saw his 6.51/217.91 defeat Mike Grieco's quicker and faster 6.49/218. He suffered from bad tire shake in the semi-final and shut off against Mike Andreotti. | Hank qualified #9 at the NHRA Winston Finals with a 6.446/218.55. He would draw the #1 Qualifier Steve McGee in round 1. Unfortunately, Johnson's 6.656/212.76 was no match for McGee's 6.382/221.23. | Photo from 1984.

Notes: Chuck was at Famoso in the first week of May for the NHRA Division Six race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.57/212.26 qualified #7. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not answer the call for the first round of eliminations. He would qualify #10 at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.448/216.03 best & he would lose in round 1 to #2 qualifier & eventual winner Charlie Byers. AKA Goldie Too.
