Notes: Jody Austin; In the early part of the season, he ran on gas but then began running on fuel. The engine was still relatively new and getting things sorted out when he raced at Green Valley on Feb. 11. He turned 10.35 at 145.75 mph, just on a check-out run. Two weeks later, at Green Valley (2/26/61), he won the A/A class and middle eliminator with 10.30 at 147.50 mph. Then he towed to Bakersfield for the March Meet, where he established himself as a contender on the national scene. He won the A/A class with 10.25 at 151.33 mph, beating some big names, like Ratican-Jackson-Stearns. Back in Texas, he became an established winner at Green Valley, putting up even bigger numbers and experimenting with running on fuel. At Green Valley, he took wins on Apr. 30 (9.98 at 151.26 mph) and middle eliminator on May 28 (10.13 at 147.95 mph). At Green Valley on July 9, he ran successfully on both gas and fuel. He set a new 1320 national record in A/A on gas with a 9.74 clocking. He also grabbed the middle eliminator clsss running on fuel and won the A/FA class with 9.96 at 148.27 mph. Notes: Ted was at OCIR on July 6 for its Nitro Championships. A sixteen-car fuel altered race ran alongside the Top Fuel and Funny Car program. Tardie ran 8.31 to qualify #5. His 9.64/174 advanced when Randy Bradford fouled in the opening round. Bob Walker also fouled against him in round two, and Ted ran 8.79/181.80. In the semifinal, an off-pace 9.29/136.98 lost to eventual winner Gary Reed's 8.10/196. |
