Notes: Leroy was at Tri-City Dragway in September for a Fuel Altered race. His 7.69/183.29 beat Dan Geiger in the "Rat Trap in the first round." Unfortunately, the "Magnificent 7" put a rod through the block and was done for the day. |

Notes: As the different strips in Southern California employed different classification systems, it's hard to equate today's classes with the classes in the 1950s. But essentially, this venerable roadster was a D class roadster, running either on gas or fuel. At some meets, they even changed their flathead motor to accept both gas and fuel to take class wins on both. As George Burkhart was a big guy, 6'10" at over 300 pounds, Mike Burns did all the driving. They restricted all their racing to San Fernando, Santa Ana, or Saugus in 1959. Some additional people joined the team at a few meets. For instance, at a few events in September, the Morris Brothers joined with them for the meet at Saugus on Sep. 1, where they won the D/FR class with 129 mph and took the E/Roadster Gas Flathead class at the same race with 114.50 mph. All in all, it must have been a busy day. At San Fernando on Sep. 2, the Morris Bros. were partners when they won the fuel roadster class with 126.76 mph. The Morris Bros. were in on the action at San Fernando on Sep. 9 when they took a V class Fuel Roadster win with 120.93 mph. On Sep. 29 at Saugus, Burkhart ran in E Roadster Comp Gas with Burvis and Okomura for a win at 114.94 mph. It's unclear if that was the same car because the news reports only give Burkhart's name, linked with a Merc motor in a roadster. At Saugus on Sep. 22, Burns turned 124.89 mph on fuel but blew the transmission. They fixed the tranny and switched to gas to finish the day's race, winning the F Roadster Comp Gas class with 114.46 mph. On Nov. 11 at San Fernando, they took top eliminator, running their new 295 c.i. motor after switching out their old 259 Merc flathead. They also set a new track record with the new motor at 130.81 mph. Their best gas time in the season was 116.36 mph which they ran at Saugus on Aug. 25. Notes: The Campos brothers were racing roadsters for years. The '69 version used a 96" wheelbase chassis built by Jack Eskelson. It was light, weighing only 1,550 lbs. The engine was a 354 Hemi that used a Delta crank, M/T rods and pistons, and an Engle cam. Mondello supplied the heads. A Hilborn injection unit sat on a Don Hampton-built blower. HP was claimed to be 1,400. Tom was at Lions on December 6 for an eight-car show. He made it into the final by beating Lee LeBaron in the first round, with a 7.82/174.41 and a semifinal 8.11/162.74 beat Frank Harris. But in the final, his 8.15/162.16 lost to Bob Hankins' 7.67/190 in the "Blue Blazer." The following day was not a good day for Ferraro. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, where he qualified #11 with an 8.11. In the first round, he faced Leroy Chadderton. Leroy got out of shape, crossed into Tom's lane, and hit the guardrail slightly. While this was going on, Ferraro's engine burst into flames. He got the car stopped but received third-degree burns to 60% of his body. |

Notes: Steel body with chopped top. Engine was set up with fuel injection with small beer keg for fuel tank and ran about 70% nitro. Transmission was C&O TorqueFlite. Engine was later traded for blown engine that was first used in the Durachrome Bug. This car was originally built for the street and sat for years in Warren's den and was converted back to the street in 1975. |
