Notes: Blown roadsters of this ilk surfaced in response to the very liberal rules allowed by local So-Cal promoters wherein cars were being built with little regard to NHRA rules. A sort of compromise in that liberal engine set back, and lightweight similar to the more radical bodied cars (think Mike Mitchell, John Lombardo Corvettes) yet retaining traditional body style. Cars were like an altered and performed no better than the others. On occasion, these roadsters qualified for a few open fuel altered shows when car turnout was light or weather conditions negated the advantages of a blown fuel motor, read no traction. They pretty much ceased to exist by the end of 1970. Densham's car ran 8.60s at 160 plus on a good day. This explanation and recorded performance pretty much holds true for all the roadsters of that era. - BD |

Notes: Built in 1955 by Red Greth and Don Maynard, this started out as a Lords car club roadster owned by Lyle Fisher and John Patrick. In 1956, Fisher began driving and shared ownership with the club's dragster. In the beginning of 1956, John "Buddy" Zadro teamed up with Patrick as a co-owner, but Patrick did the driving. At Holtville, California, on March 18, they turned 107 mph for a track record. On April 8 at Perryville, they took a class win with 105.26 mph. Zadro left the team and J. Mercer Johnson partnered with John Patrick for the meet at Davis-Monthan AFB on April 29. Patrick turned 114.15 mph to take a class win. Notes: They competed in the 4-day race at Union Grove on July 4-6 in the Great Lakes National Championship and won the A/Comp class with 11.82 at 123.45 mph. On Aug. 24 at Cordova at the World Series of Drag Racing, he won the AA/Competition Coupe class and was awarded the best-engineered car. Notes: Car featured injected 354 Chrysler with antiquated Hillborns. Car ran against blown cars as blown and injected nitro burners weren't separated at the time. car won at least one open altered event, beating out several blown cars. The car was sold in early 1969, and resurfaced with Chevy power under the team of Cox, Ford. Also I noted absence of an injected B/FA owned by Arizona racer Ty Pollack. Car featured the same look at Pure Hell, but was powered by bored, stroked injected 327. Beautiful show car that ran high 8's. Pollack took so long to build the car, that when it was finished, the NHRA had eliminated the class, leaving him to race only AHRA tracks. |

Notes: Russell Job built and drove this '34 Ford full-rendered coupe until Lyle Arizaga joined him in mid-May when they shared driving duties. Job first ran the car at Pomona on Mar. 20, clocking 105.50 mph. On Apr. 3 at Pomona, Job set a new track record with 109.22 mph. Arizaga teamed up with Job in time for the NHRA regional meet at Colton on May 15. The car set a new national record of 114.00 mph, with Arizaga doing the driving. On July 10 at Paradise Mesa, they set a track record at 114.75 mph. They set another track record at Colton on July 23 at 115.68 mph. On Aug. 21, they set a new track record at San Fernando of 113.35 mph. With these successes in California, they took the car to the 1955 Nationals at Great Bend, Kansas. They won their class and set a new national record of 113.06 mph. After that success, Arizaga left the team, and Job ran a couple of meets at Colton in November but couldn't get the car to do more than 105 mph.
