Notes: Dave was at Lions for an eight-car show on December. 6. He set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet in the first round, when his 7.55/208.33 beat Butch Thurmond. Unfortunately, in the semifinals he got out of shape and slowed to a 10.11/101.01 loss to eventual winner Bob Hankins' 7.69/192. The next day he went to Irwindale for a sixteen-car race. He qualified #1 with an unreal 7.35/208.80 (Top Speed and Low ET). A 7.46/205.94 beat Frank Harris in the first round, but in round two "Nanook" broke at 3/4 track while running against Mike Sullivan. Dave coasted to an 8.71/113.03 in the loss. |

Notes: Nelson was at San Fernando on February 5th, where he set a 133.33 C/F track record. The speed was tops for the day. Jim "Jazzy" Nelson is credited with being the first prominent racer to utilize the Fiat Topolino ("little mouse") body in drag racing. His flathead-powered, '34 Ford-framed competition coupe presaged the many hundreds of Fiat-bodied altereds that were to follow. Four Stromberg 97s bolted to an Edelbrock manifold atop a '49 Ford block. He shifted a '37 Cad-LaSalle trans. Nelson was a frequent Top Eliminator winner (against dragsters) in the mid-Fifties. - RT | On 12/18/1955, he set a world ET record at San Fernando, California - 9.10 seconds at 132.59 mph - per nitrofuelers.com. | Confirmed as the quickest car of 1955 as it was devoted to nitro. - Hot Rod Magazine | The 11/11/55 issue of Drag News reported a best-to-that-date of 9.68/135.84). from (Drag News 11/11/55) |

Notes: Bored .030 over 360 ci. - Dry weight 1955 lbs. - 50% Nitro. By the mid-'60s the heavier early Ford roadster had long fallen out of style in favor of Austin roadsters and Fiat coupes. But "go" this one did, until 1970. - RT |

Notes: Wild Willie Borsch with the "Winged Express" ran the first 200, a 200.44, in 1967 or '68 at Lions. — Rod Hynes. | Also, AA/FA class winner '68 NHRA Winternationals ran an unreal 7.29. This would have qualified Willie #32 for Top Fuel. He ran Super Eliminator, lost the first-round. | Finally, the NHRA AA/FA record at the end of 1968 was held by Dale Emery in the Pure Hell at 7.68/208.80, so Willie's time was pretty incredible. | Borsch started his season at Irwindale on January 14 for an eight-car race. He qualified #2 with an 8.17/185.65 and an easy 8.63/175.78 advanced in round one, but in the semifinals, the roadster wouldn't keep its front wheels on the ground, and even though he still legged it though to 8.27/184.80, he still lost to Butch Pipins' 8.17/190. Willie was at OCIR for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars made three runs. Borsch ran 7.85/189.96 in his first race, but he lost to a quick-leaving Frank Pisano at 7.93/182. In his second race, his out-of-shape 8.17/187.50 lost to Steve Bovan's 7.85/194. He ran his worst time in his final race, losing to Fred Goeske's 8.12/180 with an 8.87/131.38. |

Notes: Qualified number one in Comp at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 with a .13 under 7.120. The next closest AA/FA was Willie Borsch, two tenths back at 7.313. | Sullivan won the Tom Ferraro benefit race at Irwindale on June 6. It was an eight-car show and his 7.35/191.88 in the opening round beat Bob Hankins' 7.55/200 in the "Blue Blazer." In the semifinals, his 7.31/191.88 beat Harry Burkholder's 7.47/205. This advanced Mike into the final against Dave Hough. Sullivan set Low ET with a 7.23/200.00 over Dave's 7.61/173. On June 13, Mike was at OCIR for an eight-car Fuel Altered race. He set a 7.21 track record at 185.56 while beating Keith Clark in the first round. In the semifinals, his 7.45/177.51 beat Lee LeBaron, and he won the race when final round opponent Joe Fitzgerald lost fire. He soloed to the victory with a 7.26/195.22. 7.239 Number one qualifier Irwindale Grand Prix 7/21//70 |

Notes: Leroy was at Cecil County on June 15 for a four-car show. In his first race, he ran 7.87/196.50 to beat Leon Fitzgerald's 8.18/187.72. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in his second race while running Willie Borsch. On August 10, he was at Maple Grove for a match race against Borsch. The race was one and done when in their first encounter, Chadderton got sys and was headed straight for "Wild Willie." Leroy overcorrected, and the car rolled on its side and bounced down the track for about a hundred feet. Leroy was ok. | Leroy was one of the first altereds to legitimately crack 200 on more than one occasion in 1968. - Bill Duke |

Notes: Harry's Doodle Bug competed in A Fuel Modified Coupe/Sedan, while Jitterbug or Duncan No. 2 competed in B Fuel Modified Coupe/Sedan. Were they two almost identical cars or a single car competing in two different classes? At the 2-day event at Pomona on Apr. 3/4, the published results show the Doodle Bug winning Class A and the Jitterbug winning Class B of the Fuel Modified Coupe/Sedan. On Jan. 31, it turned 132.35 mph at Pomona. On Apr. 25 at Pomona, the Doodle Bug set a new strip record of 134.53 mph and won Top Eliminator. On May 9, it turned 129.87 mph at Pomona. It's all a bit of a confusing mystery but definitely entertaining. Photo: "Thoroughly Dangerous Dragsters," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |
