Notes: Thurmond started his season at Irwindale on January 14. He qualified #3 with an 8.36/189.59. Bill was at Irwindale on August 17 for a altered vs FC's race. In the first race, his 8.22/178.21 beat Dee Keaton who shut off. In his second race, his 8.74/188.28 defeated Steve Bovan's 8.37/192. In the final race, Bill's 8.03/195.22 lost to Willie Borsch's 7.92/180. | 360 CI 354 on 70% Nitro. By 1968 the early ('29-'32) Ford roadster body style had long passed "dinosaur" status in fuel altered racing. The Thurmond Bros. long-running throwback was the last competitive example of its breed, winning a 16-car fuel altered show at Irwindale in 1968. Times were 7.89 at 193.12 mph. - RT |

Notes: This was the fourth altered built by the Burkholders. The chassis was 1.5" chrome moly by owner Harry. The body was a '23 T touring one off, created by combining front 2/3rds and rear 2/3rds of a '23 T roadster. Paint by Pete. This was when they were still running the Oldsmobile engine in 1968. Changed to Chrysler Hemi in 1969. |

Notes: 1969 NHRA Winternationals, Springnationals, NHRA Nationals entry, Class Winner at Springnationals at Dallas. 7.54 at Irwindale, 202.70 at OCIR. Borsch won over an eight-car field at OCIR on March 15. He qualified #4 with an 8.17/162.45 and then ran 8.45/187.10 over Bill Thurmond and 8.36/165.13 in the semifinals over Frank Harris' 8.63/177. He faced Chuck Horchar in the final, and an 8.44/184.80 got him the victory over Chuck's off-pace 9.40/144. On May 17, he was at Lions for another eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a track record 7.63 at 200.89 (Top Speed). In round one, his 7.75/198.67 beat Leon Fitzgerald's 8.13/196, and in the semifinals, another 7.75 at 178.21 advanced when Tom Ferraro shut off. He faced Horchar in the final, and Borsch got out of shape and slowed to 9.09 for the runner-up spot to Chuck's 8.41/176. Willie was runner-up to Sush Matsubara at an eight-car show at Irwindale on July 19. He beat the "Magnificent 7" in the first round, with a 7.74/196.92, while in the semifinal, his 7.84/193.12 beat an out-of-shape George Hutchinson. On September 21, Borsch was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He lost to Bob Hankins' 7.52/193 in the first round, with an 8.07/186.32, but he got back in on the "break rule" when Butch Thurmond broke while winning his first-round race. In the semifinals, an 8.29/173.74 beat a sleepy 7.97/180 by Chuck Burch in the "Rat Trap." This put Willie into the final, where he was to rerun Hankins. Bob went into a wheelstand and shut off while the "Winged Express" ran 7.92/189.06 for the victory. A week later (September 27), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. This time he lost to Matsubara's 7.57/193 in the semifinals with a strong 7.64/204.98. Willie won the Fuel Altered eliminator at Irwindale's Grand Prix on October 4. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.54/199.54. On November 30, he was at Fremont for a sixteen-car "Combo" meet. Top Gas Dragsters, Jr. Fuelers, and AA/FA's all ran together. Willie qualified #3 with a 7.67, and he improved to 7.53/195.22 in the first round, over John Shoemaker. In the second round, he was to face Jim Brandy in the "Giant Killer," but as Borsch was pulling to the line, something in his steering let go, and he could not run. A week later (December 7), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car Fuel Altered race. He qualified #7 with a 7.82, but he shut off on the line in the first round, with no oil pressure. |

Notes: Leon was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars ran three rounds. In his first race, he fouled away a 7.87/196.92 and broke in the second. He got out of shape on his third run and shut off to a 9.32/117.49 loss to Frank Pisano's 8.29/171. Leon was at Irwindale on August 17 for three rounds of racing between FC's and the Fuel Altereds. Fitzgerald's 8.11/184.42 beat Dave Beebe's 8.21/186 in Nelson Carter's car in the opening round. In his second race, he improved to 8.00/188.28, but it wasn't enough to beat Dee Keaton's quick leaving 8.06/180. In the third race, he ran a strong 7.86/192.30 to defeat Steve Bovan's off pace Camaro at 9.19/144. |

Notes: Herbert was subbing for Harry Burkholder, who had a broken foot. Late in September, he was driving the car at Sacramento. He raced in the Combo Eliminator, which put the fuel altered up against a lot of Junior Fuelers and Top Gas Dragsters. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.56/204. He eased through round one when Mike Fuller fouled. In round two, he really laid down a number. His 7.37/204.60 (Low ET and Top Speed for the class) beat Henry Walther.Rich Galli fouled against him in the semifinal, and he faced Rance McDaniel in the final. But the car broke, and McDaniel picked up the win. Jim was at Irwindale early in October for its Grand Prix race. It featured a sixteen-car fuel altered race. In the opening round, his 7.64/194.80 beat Roger Garten. In round two, he improved to 7.51/200.44 while defeating Frank Pitts. He had problems in the semifinal and shut off early against eventual winner Mike Sullivan who won with a 7.49. |

Notes: These times came from a Drag Racing USA article on the team. - Danny White | Mikio ran 7.29 on the run where Tim Marshall took the famous photo of the sparks coming out of the header. We need to confirm that year. | Mikio won the event at which Harry Burkholder set the AA/FA record at 7.06 with a 7.12 to 7.10 holeshot in the final round. |

Notes: Dennise qualified first at the 1976 Tucson AA/FA Nationals with a 6.89. In the first week of June, Geisler was at Fremont for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 7.06/187.11 beat Lee LeBaron and a 7.83/156.52 in the semi-final took out Bill Frontuto, who shut down. He lost to Dave Hough in the final. He was at OCIR on December 4 for its Super Altered Invitational race. All fourteen cars ran in the first round, with the four quickest advancing into the semi-finals. Geisler set Low ET in the first round, where his 6.85/195.65 beat the Trillo brothers' car. In the semi-final, his 7.33/162.00 beat Gary Southern's 7.61/160. He faced Art McLaren, driving the "Pure Heaven" in the final. At the light, it looked like it was over for Geisler as he was getting out of shape and lifting, but then Art had his engine blow, and Dennis drove around him to record a 10.12 for the win. Keith Black aluminum block #8. |

Notes: Coleman was a student at Arlington State College when he caught Raymond Austin's eye to drive his black Fiat fuel altered for him. His first outing driving for Austin was at the I-20 drag strip in Tyler on Oct. 8. He won the A/FC class and Middle Eliminator with 9.39 at 167.59 mph. The car graced the cover of Drag News on Dec. 2, having just set a new Drag News 1320 national record in A/FA of 9.13 on Sep. 17 in Tyler, Texas.
