Notes: Sparks & Bonny made the rounds of SoCal drag strips in the latter half of 1955. The tracks had different names for their class, but they were essentially an A Fuel Coupe. They ran 70% nitro with a S.C.O.T. blower on their Merc flathead. At Colton on June 5, they won top eliminator with 120.88 mph. At Saugus on June 11, they won the 29/40 Stripped Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 127.56 mph. The next day at Santa Ana, they won the Stripped Coupe Flathead class with 123.45 mph. At Saugus on June 25, they took a class win with 125.09 mph. On July 23 at Saugus, they won the Modified Roadster-Coupes class with a record 125.80 mph. They ran 119.26 mph at Pomona on July 24 in the B Fuel Comp Coupe-Sedan class. On Aug. 20 at Colton, they set a record in the B Fuel Comp Coupe-Sedan class with 126.40 mph. The next day at Santa Ana, they won in the Modified Coupe Fuel class with 126.99 mph. At Saugus on Sep. 3, they got a class win with 129.13 mph. The next day at San Fernando, they won the W class (A Fuel Coupe-Sedan) with 131.58 mph. At Colton on Sep. 10, they won the B Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 125.17 mph. The next day at San Fernando, Sparks ran 131.40 mph. On Oct. 2 at San Fernando, he took a class win with 128 mph. At Pomona on Nov. 20, Sparks set a class record with 128.50 mph in the B Comp Coupe-Sedan class. He finished the year at Pomona on Dec. 18 with a class win at 127.00 mph. Notes: Willie was at Irwindale on June 4 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with an 8.69 and in the first round, his 8.77/181.08 beat Gary Essman in the "Magic Muffler" car. In the semifinals, an 8.80/181 beat Henry Harrison driving the "Beaver Hunter." This put him in the final against Dale Emery in the "Pure Hell" car. Unfortunately, Bosch fouled away an 8.88/175.06 while Emery got the victory with an 8.92. |
