Notes: Car was built with coil-overs then switched to solid strut. The 7.25 national record at Indy was amazing. Don Schumacher set funny car Low ET at 7.22! | Sush had Joe Mondello's new Fiat at OCIR on February 16 for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.87/186.32. Matsubara made his way to the final by beating a tire-smoking Tom Ferraro in the first round, with an 8.47/195.22, and an 8.11/184.42 in the semifinals stopped Glenn Way's 8.64/177. Notes: Dan was at Irwindale on April 11 for an eight-car show. His 7.58/201.34 (Top Speed) qualified second to Willie Borsch's 7.56/200. Ed Moore fouled against him in the opening round, so Dan advanced with an 8.77/200.44. He got crossed up in the semifinal and shut down against eventual winner Bob Hankins' 7.59. |

Notes: Borsch totaled his car at Michigan, and a week later, in July, he showed up at LaPlace in a new Logghe chassis car for a match race against the Burkholder brothers. One thing missing from the car at this race was the roll bar-mounted airfoil. In the first race, Willy eased the car to a bogging 10.31 that lost to Harry's 7.65. An 8.03 in the second race also lost to the brothers' 7.57, and in the third race, Willie got his new ride into the sevens with a 7.77, but still lost to Burkholder's 7.53. Qualified fourth at Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.313, although Mike Sullivan led qualifying in his similar car at 7.120. |

Notes: Ran 8.114 at Irwindale, CA, 7/4/70. Ed was at Irwindale's Labour Day Championships in Sept. A field of eight fuel altereds ran. A first-round 7.94/133.53 beat the "Tranquility," and in the semifinals, his 7.58/196.50 beat Roger Garten's identical 7.58/196. But the run came at a cost for Moore, and he could not return for the final. |

Notes: Menacing and hunkered down, this chopped, full-fendered coupe ran in the Fuel Coupe class years before the term FUEL altereds came into use. When the NHRA instituted the fuel ban in 1957, Montgomery sold the Deuce and built a '41 Willys B/gasser that he ran from 1959/72. - RT; Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, June 4, 1955 - MB |
