Notes: Set a "1320 Record" for class A Hot (aka Fuel) Roadsters with a 151.77 blast at Bakersfield on May 3. Made cover (again) of 5/09/59 Drag News. We need to find out if Burkhart-Burns ran under the well-known Reath Automotive "banner" other than in 1959.; He set a new but short-lived Drag News 1320 record at Bakersfield on May 3. At Riverside, on May 17, he won what Drag News mistakenly called the A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 10.44 at 144.00 mph. He really ran in what was then called the A Hot Roadster class, meaning he ran on fuel. Photo: "Show us your favorite Model A roadsters," p. 7, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: The Campos brothers were racing roadsters for years. The '69 version used a 96" wheelbase chassis built by Jack Eskelson. It was light, weighing only 1,550 lbs. The engine was a 354 Hemi that used a Delta crank, M/T rods and pistons, and an Engle cam. Mondello supplied the heads. A Hilborn injection unit sat on a Don Hampton-built blower. HP was claimed to be 1,400. Tom was at Lions on December 6 for an eight-car show. He made it into the final by beating Lee LeBaron in the first round, with a 7.82/174.41 and a semifinal 8.11/162.74 beat Frank Harris. But in the final, his 8.15/162.16 lost to Bob Hankins' 7.67/190 in the "Blue Blazer." The following day was not a good day for Ferraro. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, where he qualified #11 with an 8.11. In the first round, he faced Leroy Chadderton. Leroy got out of shape, crossed into Tom's lane, and hit the guardrail slightly. While this was going on, Ferraro's engine burst into flames. He got the car stopped but received third-degree burns to 60% of his body. |

Notes: Red was runner-up at the 1960 NHRA Nationals in Detroit at 9.89/150.00, but we need confirmation of the car. Was it the Bo-Weevil (which we have confirmation of him beginning to drive in 1963)? 150 NHRA Detroit MI 9/60; Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B., p. 9 - MB |

Notes: Photo from 1968. Chadderton ran at an eight-car show at OCIR on February 16. He qualified #2 with a 7.89 with a track record speed of 204.08. Unfortunately, in the first round, his blower exploded in the lights after running 7.90/190.26 over Willie Borsch. He was unable to return for the semifinals. On November 22, Leroy was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He ran a first-round 7.81/171 to beat Stan Lucas, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 7.75/189 over Sush Matsubara's 8.02/177. In the final, he faced Dave Hough, and in a close race, Chadderton's 7.78/193.13 beat Hough's 7.82/204. |

Notes: Leon was at Irwindale on May 27 for a best-of-three-match race against Dale Emery driving the "Pure Hell." In their first race, Dale's 8.45/173 beat Fitzgerald's 8.51/181.44. But Leon came back out to tie things up with an 8.38/182 when the "Pure Hell" had to be shut off on the line. In the tie-breaker, Leon got the win with his 8.39/179.64, defeating Emery's 8.42/177. Leon also ran 8.44/178.82 at Irwindale on 6/24/67. |

Notes: Jody Austin; In the early part of the season, he ran on gas but then began running on fuel. The engine was still relatively new and getting things sorted out when he raced at Green Valley on Feb. 11. He turned 10.35 at 145.75 mph, just on a check-out run. Two weeks later, at Green Valley (2/26/61), he won the A/A class and middle eliminator with 10.30 at 147.50 mph. Then he towed to Bakersfield for the March Meet, where he established himself as a contender on the national scene. He won the A/A class with 10.25 at 151.33 mph, beating some big names, like Ratican-Jackson-Stearns. Back in Texas, he became an established winner at Green Valley, putting up even bigger numbers and experimenting with running on fuel. At Green Valley, he took wins on Apr. 30 (9.98 at 151.26 mph) and middle eliminator on May 28 (10.13 at 147.95 mph). At Green Valley on July 9, he ran successfully on both gas and fuel. He set a new 1320 national record in A/A on gas with a 9.74 clocking. He also grabbed the middle eliminator clsss running on fuel and won the A/FA class with 9.96 at 148.27 mph. At Green Valley on Nov. 19, he took the A/FA class win and middle eliminator with 10.06 and 160.14 mph. Photo: "Vintage shots from days gone by," p. 3907, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |
