Notes: Car was owned by former dry lakes racer Jim Miles. Miles was responsible for approaching So-Cal promoters and promoting the altereds as a lucrative feature as an alternative or supplement to the weekly top fuel shows. Car was orginally powered by blown fuel 327, and continued in use until 1969, where it was powered by 392. Car ran mid 7's at 195 and won its share of races. - BD | Photo shows car in later early-hemi guise, not the smallblock Chevy it utilized this year. - RT |

Notes: Gary was at Irwindale on June 15 for a four-car match. In his first race, he ran 7.71/195.22 to beat Mike Sullivan's unblown car at 8.57/171. Gary also won his second race with a 7.67/187.10 over Bart Dimatteo's 8.52/160. He got crossed up and shut off in his last race losing to Tom Ferraro. He grabbed a big win over the sixteen-car field at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. An opening round 8.09/190.26 defeated Sush Matsubara's 8.59/189, and in round two, his 8.31/194.80 advanced. Ted Tardie's 9.29/136 in the "Rat Trap" fell to his 8.10/196.06 in the semifinal. He faced Harry Burkholder in the final, and Gary's 8.03/197.80 got the victory over Harry's 8.36/186. On August 17, Irwindale held an Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each, and in the first round, Gary ran the best time of the meet for either class with a 7.69/204.08 that beat Jack Chrisman's 8.13/179. He got out of shape in his second race and shut off against Dave Beebe. |

Notes: Jim Fox and McComb had Chuck Conway as a partner and co-owner except for a short stretch when they had Reis as a co-owner in August. They primarily did their racing at Pomona but also towed their dragster to a few other nearby tracks during the season. Sometime after 1959, they added a blower to the motor, but in '59, they ran injectors. They began the season running in B/FMR (which at that time was just called B/MR). Right out of the gate, they were a success. At Pomona on June 7, they took top fuel eliminator and set a new Drag News 1320 record in B/FMR with 11.79 at 127.84 mph. Before the month was out, they set another world record in B/FMR at Pomona with 10.53 at 132.93 mph. From then on, they ran in A/FMR. At Colton on July 25, they took a win in the A/FMR class with 11.32 at 125.67 mph. The next day at Riverside, they took a class win with 10.90 at 139.53 mph. They returned to Pomona on August 2 and took a class win with 10.52 at 136.57 mph. Colton began experimenting with running 3/16th mile races. On August 8 at Colton, they ran 9.25 at 124.48 mph in the 3/16th mile. The following week at Colton, on August 15, they ran 9.45 at 128.38 mph in the 3/16th mile. The 3/16th mile races were a short-lived experiment. Back at Colton on November 1, they took a class win at 122.44 and won top fuel eliminator at 143.34 mph. Riverside conducted half-mile drag races occasionally. On November 15 at Riverside, they got a class win of 18.25 at 167.05 mph. They finished out the year racing strictly at Pomona. On December 6, they took an A/FMR win with 9.68 at 149.25 mph. The following week at Pomona, Fox set out to try to break his 1320 record but blew his engine. Two weeks later, with a repaired engine, he set a new Drag News 1320 record with 9.91 at 149.75 mph. He tipped the can and loaded the engine with 95% nitro. In addition to capturing the new mark, he took top fuel eliminator. Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, July 3, 1959 -- MB |

Notes: Glenn was at OCIR on September 21 for a Funny Car vs Fuel Altered race. All cars ran three races. In Glenn's first race, he beat Rich Siroonian's 8.10/186 in John Mazmanian's new 'Cuda with a 7.87/196.50. He got crossed up and shut off in his second race, losing to Charlie Allen's 7.88/183. Notes: Car was built with coil-overs then switched to solid strut. The 7.25 national record at Indy was amazing. Don Schumacher set funny car Low ET at 7.22! | Sush had Joe Mondello's new Fiat at OCIR on February 16 for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.87/186.32. Matsubara made his way to the final by beating a tire-smoking Tom Ferraro in the first round, with an 8.47/195.22, and an 8.11/184.42 in the semifinals stopped Glenn Way's 8.64/177. He faced Leon Fitzgerald in the final and had all kinds of problems with the car getting out of shape and crossing the centerline. Leon won with an 8.69. | 208.00 National record set where |

Notes: Willie had quite a time at Pomona for the NHRA Pomona Winternationals. He won the AA/FA class, but had to get out and push the roadster when his competition broke. In the Super Eliminator class, he beat Bill Lawton's Mustang in the first round, with an 8.63, but in round two once again the roadster broke. Fortunately, his competition fouled so Willie got out and pushed it through again. His ETs on the two times he pushed were 144.65 and 143.45! He was unable to run the next round as he had damaged the motor. |
