Notes: The Brissette Bros. Traded in their '29 Model A Ford roadster (initally intended for lakes racing) for a drags-specific '32 Austin (aka Bantam) roadster. This was one of the earliest uses of this diminutive body style as the "hot roadster" class quickly morphed into Fuel Altered. Info from George Montgomery's "Those Wild Fuel Altereds." - RT |

Notes: Leon was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars ran three rounds. In his first race, he fouled away a 7.87/196.92 and broke in the second. He got out of shape on his third run and shut off to a 9.32/117.49 loss to Frank Pisano's 8.29/171. Leon was at Irwindale on August 17 for three rounds of racing between FC's and the Fuel Altereds. Fitzgerald's 8.11/184.42 beat Dave Beebe's 8.21/186 in Nelson Carter's car in the opening round. In his second race, he improved to 8.00/188.28, but it wasn't enough to beat Dee Keaton's quick leaving 8.06/180. In the third race, he ran a strong 7.86/192.30 to defeat Steve Bovan's off pace Camaro at 9.19/144. |

Notes: Set a national record at 7.42/191.89. However, a placard in Memory Grove in Bakersfield by the Pettinato team credits John with a 7.02/199.10 in 1972. We need to confirm where that happened. |

Notes: This team grew out of childhood friendships. Raced professionally for 14 years-1960 through 1974. Had 5 cars. Won IHRA National event at Bristol about 1971 or 1972. 511 cubic inch iron late model with alum heads. We ran on 92% nitro with Nitrous oxide. No blower. Small Enderle pump, best of 199 mph at 7.02 ET (duplicated the ET at Maple Grove and duplicated the speed at Pittsburgh International). Home in Maryland, we ran north, south, east & west. The picture below is at Tucson where we qualified #1. John Morey passed away from cancer about 1980. Frank Pettinato lived in Arizona and California, where he ran street rods and Bonneville cars. Plus front engine top fuel in Southern California in the late 1980s and 1990s. Son Dan Pettinato drove two different FE Top Fuel cars named Rat Poison. Frank presently lives in upstate South Carolina where son Dan runs two new Rat Poison cars, a Mike Bos Jr. Dragster and an Ed Horton fuel altered Fiat with grandson Robby Pettinato slated to eventually do the driving. "The beat goes on." This car finished in the Top 10 in Pro Comp in A/FD. Morey qualified second at the Tucson Fuel Altered Nationals with 7.48, but lost in the second round to Greg Bellemeur. |

Notes: Herbert was subbing for Harry Burkholder, who had a broken foot. Late in September, he was driving the car at Sacramento. He raced in the Combo Eliminator, which put the fuel altered up against a lot of Junior Fuelers and Top Gas Dragsters. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 7.56/204. He eased through round one when Mike Fuller fouled. In round two, he really laid down a number. His 7.37/204.60 (Low ET and Top Speed for the class) beat Henry Walther.Rich Galli fouled against him in the semifinal, and he faced Rance McDaniel in the final. But the car broke, and McDaniel picked up the win. Jim was at Irwindale early in October for its Grand Prix race. It featured a sixteen-car fuel altered race. In the opening round, his 7.64/194.80 beat Roger Garten. In round two, he improved to 7.51/200.44 while defeating Frank Pitts. He had problems in the semifinal and shut off early against eventual winner Mike Sullivan who won with a 7.49. |

Notes: Track record at the time at Tucson. Jackson won the Tucson Dragway Fuel Altered Nationals on 9/76 after qualifying 11th at Tucson Dragway AA/FA Nationals with a 7.71. We made a little jaunt over to S.L.C. and Bonneville Raceway in the '70s and met up with old friend DENNIS GEISLER for a match race, Dennis nipped us in the final with a 7.08 to CAL'S 7.10, but we BOTH set the track speed record with identical 206.82 M.P. H. Now they're reminiscing in the skies somewhere! - Les Jackson |
