Notes: One-of-a-kind blown fuel altered coupe. Ran 400 cid (0.30-over 392) early hemi. Not a gasser. more a funny car with a vintage Willys body. Evil handling cured when team switched from direct drive and solid rear to Torqueflite and sprung rear during 1967 season. Notes: Gary was at Irwindale on June 15 for a four-car match. In his first race, he ran 7.71/195.22 to beat Mike Sullivan's unblown car at 8.57/171. Gary also won his second race with a 7.67/187.10 over Bart Dimatteo's 8.52/160. He got crossed up and shut off in his last race losing to Tom Ferraro. He grabbed a big win over the sixteen-car field at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. An opening round 8.09/190.26 defeated Sush Matsubara's 8.59/189, and in round two, his 8.31/194.80 advanced. Ted Tardie's 9.29/136 in the "Rat Trap" fell to his 8.10/196.06 in the semifinal. He faced Harry Burkholder in the final, and Gary's 8.03/197.80 got the victory over Harry's 8.36/186. On August 17, Irwindale held an Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each, and in the first round, Gary ran the best time of the meet for either class with a 7.69/204.08 that beat Jack Chrisman's 8.13/179. He got out of shape in his second race and shut off against Dave Beebe.

Notes: Ted was at OCIR on July 6 for its Nitro Championships. A sixteen-car fuel altered race ran alongside the Top Fuel and Funny Car program. Tardie ran 8.31 to qualify #5. His 9.64/174 advanced when Randy Bradford fouled in the opening round. Bob Walker also fouled against him in round two, and Ted ran 8.79/181.80. Notes: Thurmond started his season at Irwindale on January 14. He qualified #3 with an 8.36/189.59. Bill was at Irwindale on August 17 for a altered vs FC's race. In the first race, his 8.22/178.21 beat Dee Keaton who shut off. In his second race, his 8.74/188.28 defeated Steve Bovan's 8.37/192. In the final race, Bill's 8.03/195.22 lost to Willie Borsch's 7.92/180. | 360 CI 354 on 70% Nitro. By 1968 the early ('29-'32) Ford roadster body style had long passed "dinosaur" status in fuel altered racing. Notes: Car featured injected 354 Chrysler with antiquated Hillborns. Car ran against blown cars as blown and injected nitro burners weren't separated at the time. car won at least one open altered event, beating out several blown cars. The car was sold in early 1969, and resurfaced with Chevy power under the team of Cox, Ford. Also I noted absence of an injected B/FA owned by Arizona racer Ty Pollack. Car featured the same look at Pure Hell, but was powered by bored, stroked injected 327. Beautiful show car that ran high 8's. Pollack took so long to build the car, that when it was finished, the NHRA had eliminated the class, leaving him to race only AHRA tracks.
