Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above.

Notes: Ran 7.47 at Rockingham. | On March 16, Fritz raced at an eight-car show at Green Valley Raceway. He won his first-round race with an 8.32 over Bob Manion's 8.61. In the semifinal, a 7.98/180 beat Gene Snow's ailing Charger. In the final, Henry Garcia's 8.12/181 beat his 8.47/178.21. In mid-April, he was at Indianapolis, where four FCs were running. A 7.75/184 beat Terry Ivey in his first race while in his second race, a 7.82/182 lost to Pat Minick's 7.66/194 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He ran his best of the day in his last race, a 7.74/185 over Paul Stefansky. On April 26, Callier won an Funny Car meet at Houston, setting a 7.86 track record. Late in May, he was at Gary, Indiana's, US 30 for the Drag News Invitationals. A first-round 8.11/198 beat Arnie Beswick, while in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.66/204 to beat Don Schumacher's close 7.67/200. He was to face Minick in the final, but it rained, and the final never came off. Fritz had an interesting day on June 8 at the AHRA Springnationals. He ran well and was on his way to the finals, but things didn't work out. He started by winning his first-round race with a 9.96 when Shirl Greer fouled against him. In the second round, the impossible happened, Danny Ongais fouled away a 7.61, and Fritz won with a 7.89. In the semifinal, Callier was to face Dick Harrell, but Dick lost fire, and the backup car of Mickey Thompson/Danny Ongais was fired up to replace Harrell. Unfortunately, the starter failed to notice Ongais fire up and sent Callier on a single. During the mix-up, Harrell refired, and he and Ongais raced down the track. Thompson, quite heated, demanded a rerun between the cars, and Fritz agreed. On the rerun, Danny's 7.76 beat the Camaro's 7.93. During this time, Callier's car was known as the car to beat in Houston. He ran against Co-Go Eads' Mustang there in a best of three match race in June. Eads actually beat Fritz in the first race with an 8.12/176 win over the Camaro's 8.41/175, but Fritz came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 8.13/178 and a solo when the Mustang broke a blower drive, 8.08/180. On August 24 at the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley, a first-round 7.82 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.65. At Bristol for the AHRA All-American Championships, they held a race on September 6 during qualifying; their actual race was to be held the next day. But on the 6, Fritz ran 7.64/187.50 and 7.99 in the first two rounds before meeting Terry Hedrick in the semifinal. A 7.75 beat Terry's quicker 7.72. In the final, he had to shut off with no oil pressure giving Ronnie Runyan the win. The next day, for the real race, a 7.70 beat Tony Wahlay in the first round, but Wahlay got back in on the break rule and met Fritz again in round two. Once again, Fritz beat the 'Cuda, this time with a 7.73. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke and was unable to make the semifinal, reinstating Mike Burkhart. He competed at an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20, but a first-round 7.69 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.52. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, he ran a first-round 7.79 over Bob Manion, but a 7.68 by Gene Snow in the second round beat him. He met Snow at Houston for a best of three match. Fritz lost the first two races and the match when he smoked the tires to an 8.25 loss to Gene's 7.88, and in the second race, he fouled away a 7.94. He did win the final race with a 7.97, beating Snow's 8.20.

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman had the Logghe brothers build him a new Cougar for '69. It cost $20,000 to build. The car had a 118" wheelbase The body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. Powering the car was a 1,500 hp SOHC Ford that burned 70% nitro. Eddie built his own engines, and crew chief Alan Gillis helped to maintain them. The motor remained stock-sized at 427 cubic inches and used M/T rods and Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane supplied the cams. Ed ran steel heads. The 25% overdriven blower was built by Don Hampton. A four-port Hilborn injector sat on top. The power was transmitted to the 4.11 Ford rear end by a C-6 automatic transmission. The total weight was just under 2,000 lbs. | Schartman started the year on a good note by beating Arnie Beswick in a match race in Jan at Thunderbolt Raceway in Florida. It was cold, so the track wasn't at its best, as shown by the times. Beswick's 8.80/166 won the first race when Ed got crossed up and shut down. In the second race, Ed ran an 8.70/168.00 over Beswick, who lost a rear end. Ed ran a final 8.00/170.77 to win when Beswick, who had repaired the rear end, came out only to blow his transmission and lose the match. Schartman qualified #14 with an 8.32/174.75 at the NHRA Winternationals, but a holeshot 8.45 by Rich Siroonian beat his quicker 8.39 in the first round. He met Clare Sanders for a match race at Suffolk on April 6, and Clare ran a first-round 7.93/187 over his 8.16/173.07. It was more of the same in the second round, with Clare's 7.85/185 beating Ed's out-of-shape 8.30/178.67. He did win the third race with an 8.03/177.86, beating Sanders' 8.45/152, but he lost the match. At another match in April, he faced Bruce Larson at US 131, Martin, Mich. Larson won the first race with an 8.29/187 over Ed's 8.42/172.41. Schartman then tied things up with an 8.37/173.41 over Bruce, who had transmission problems. In the do-or-die final race, Larson took the victory and the match. Eddie did much better on April 27 at Cordova's 1,000-foot track, where he beat Arnie Beswick three straight with a best of 6.34/175.45 on the short track. He lost a tough one against Don Schumacher on May 10 at York US 30, where Don smoked him in two straight with runs of 7.69/196 and 7.90/194 that beat the Cougar’s 8.01/181.80 and 7.89/185.18. Then came a rematch against Sanders the following day (May 11) at Connecticut, where Sanders' 8.19/180 won the first race when Schartman lost a motor. Clare won the match when Ed couldn't return to make a run. On May 16, he went to Union Grove to run a UDRA race. He lost to eventual winner Sanders in the second round. A four-car round-robin race was held at LaPlace on May 18. Ed won all three of his races to win the event. An 8.05/176.12 in the first race beat Dee Keaton driving Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" at 8.65/145. In the second race, Schartman was up against Charlie Durel's AA/GD, driven by Steve Puneky. The dragster filled in for Mart Higginbotham, who was late arriving. The Cougar's 7.86/181.80 beat the dragster's 7.98/181.00. In the last race, he faced Leonard Hughes. Hughes hit some water on the track and shut off while Ed hustled to a 7.87/182.54 to win. Schartman was at Budds Creek on May 30 for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. The big SOHC motor was down on power here as his 8.11/178.00 in the first round, lost to Larson's 7.95/187. He ran a couple of consolation races, beating the "Frantic Ford" with an 8.09/176.81 and losing to Liberman's 8.07/184 with an 8.11/180.72. He won over a small funny car field at York US 30 on May 31 for an NHRA Division 1 points race. In the final, he beat Lee Jones in Malcolm Durham's Camaro with a 7.83/183 over Lee's 7.92/182. Ed qualified #12 with an 8.14/178.57 at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but in the first round, the car came up ailing and lost to Ray Alley's 7.98/180. Then came another rematch, this time against Larson at Maple Grove. Bruce won three straight, resetting the track speed record to 187.88 and hitting a 7.69 best over Ed's best of 7.89/178.57. A rematch was run against the two on June 21 at York US 30, where Ed ran a 7.86/182.92 holeshot over Larson's quicker 7.62 in the first race. Larson broke in the second race, and Schartman ran the backup car of Al Graeber and won with a 7.75/184.00 to Al's 7.87/184. Larson fixed his car and was hoping to win at least one of his three races, but he got out-of-shape and lost to Ed's 7.95/180.72 to give Ed three straight victories. He ran at Edgewater on July 3 but lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 20, he beat the Green Hornet in the first round, but in the second round, he met Sanders, who seemed to have a hex on him. Sure enough, Sanders' 7.56/192 beat Ed's 8.00/178.92. He ran much better at Sunset Dragstrip's fifth annual Funny Car Championships. The track was one-eighth mile. Ed advanced with a 5.19 in the first round, when Paula Murphy fouled. He got past the second round and met Mel Perry in the semifinal. Perry ran a 5.20 but lost to a 5.13 by Schartman. In the final, he met Larson, and Larson prevailed. At Atco on July 23 for their fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Ed set a 7.48 track record in the first round, at 187.88 over Lew Arrington's 7.81. In the semifinal, a 7.67/182.54 beat (finally) Sanders' 7.84/186. In the final, he met Fred Goeske and won, resetting his own track record with a 7.46. After such a good run, it was hard to take the first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2. Dean LaPole's 7.97 beat Ed's 8.10 in the first race of round one. The following day (August 3), he ran a match race at Shelby Raceway against Bobby Wood, and Wood beat Schartman three straight with a 7.54/194 best to Ed's 7.97/181 best. At the three-day Super Stock Nationals, he ran well the second day (August 9), but the last two rounds of Saturday's race were run on Sunday morning when the rains came. Al Graeber fouled against him in the semifinal. In the final, Danny Ongais beat him with a 7.75/193. He lost in the second round to Larry Reyes at the AHRA Nationals at New York on August 17. Ed managed to qualify for the US Nationals with a 7.53/191.89 for #14 on the grid. Unfortunately, he fouled against Larson in the first round. After Indy, Ed let Arnie Behling drive. I can't find another match race or race where Schartman drove the fueler. - Ron Howard

He qualified #8 with an 8.25/187.89, but in the first round, his 8.58 lost to Larry Reyes 8.14 in the "flying Hawaiian. Mike had a ringside seat as the Charger got airborne and flew 200 feet before landing upside down.

Notes: Ray started the season by qualifying #12 with an 8.06 at Irwindale's (40 cars showed) New Year's day race. He advanced past the first-round when Dick Harrell fouled, and an ailing 9.23/111.52 beat Clyde Morgan in the second round. Ray was unable to run in the semifinal and was replaced with the break rule in effect by Morgan again. At the AHRA Winternationals, he made it to the second round before getting beat by Danny Ongais in the M/T Mustang. He did much better on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, where forty cars again showed for sixteen spots. He qualified #4 with an 8.14/183.67 on a poor Pomona surface; only one car ran a seven in qualifying. A first-round 8.41 beat Art Ward (8.73), and he soloed in round two after Larry Reyes's crash in the Hawaiian kept him from returning for the second round. An 8.27/185.95 just nipped Rich Siroonian's 8.27/184.42 in John Mazmanian's Cuda in the semifinal. In the final, his 8.11/187 lost to Clare Sanders' 7.88/187 in Jim Liberman's second car. To show how good this early-hemi powered car was, on February 9, 35 cars showed up at OCIR for an eight-car show for the second All-Pro race, and Alley's 7.72/189.46 qualified #6. Pat Foster, Clare Sanders, Tom Grove, Randy Walls, Fred Goeske, and Steve Bovan were among the non-qualifiers. Ray failed to make the finals, but it was a good showing. Another runner-up finish came on February 22 at an eight-car show at Lions where Pat Foster in the M/T Mustang lost fire on the line against him in the first round, and in the semi's, he beat Randy Walls. A 7.70 by Siroonian in the final ended his bid for the title. At Bakersfield on March 2, he lost in the first round, to Tom McEwen's 7.78/196.93 to his 8.18/187.50. He then went to Riverside for the HRM Championships on March 16, where a 7.96 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to Marv Eldridge in Clyde Morgan's Javelin. On March 22, Lions held an eight-car show, and 22 cars showed. It took an 8.19 or better to get in, and Alley failed to make the cut. At the final OCIR All-Pro on March 29, he qualified but fouled away a 7.70/190.64 in the first round, against Charlie Allen's 7.45/194. On April 26, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show where he advanced past the first round when AMX-1 broke on the line. In the second round, he got out of shape against Ongais (7.47/191) and shut off. OCIR held its second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3, and Alley qualified second on the Mopar team with a 7.85/191.08. In his first race, an 8.04/193.96 beat Larry Fullerton's 8.54/181, and the second win came with an 8.64/187.10 beating Clyde Morgan, but he fouled away a 7.70/192.30 in his third race against Randy Walls (8.11/182). In didn't do very well in the thin air at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver, Colorado, on May 25, losing to John Dekker's Assassination in three straight races. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.81/189.07. A first-round 7.98/180.00 beat Ed Schartman's ailing Cougar, and a second-round 7.91/180.80 beat Don Gay's 8.58. Ray fouled in the semifinal against Ongais (7.57). Alley was runner-up to Fritz Callier at Beeline when he got crossed up in the final. He ran on July 12 at Irwindale's Race with a Reason but lost to Dave Beebe's 7.54/195 to Alley's 7.93/184.82 in the first round. The following week (July 19), he qualified #10 at the PDA Championships with an 8.22, but he fouled away an 8.16 against Ongais' 7.58 in the first round. Irwindale held another sixteen-car show on August 16, and Alley made a good account of himself with a first-round 7.91/187.50 over Steve Bovan's 7.97/174 in the Mister T Camaro. He lost in the second round. The Drag News Nationals was held at Lions on August 30. Alley qualified, but an 8.40/135.55 lost to Ed Lenarth's 7.74/186 in the first round. He got back in on the break rule in the second round but ended up breaking on the line, advancing Jim Adolph. He ran a first-round 7.58 for Low ET on September 1 at an eight-car show at Irwindale but hurt some parts doing it and had to withdraw from making the semifinal. The following week (September 6), he set Top Speed at 189.87 at an eight-car show at OCIR. He qualified fifth with an 8.03, but not only did he foul in his first race, but he also lost a blower. Late in the year, on November 23, he ran at Irwindale's big 32-car show, and an 8.07/172.16 got past Jim Maybeck's 8.63 in the first round. A blown rear end put him out in the second round. He followed that up with a big win on November 29 over an eight-car field at Lions. A first-round 7.49/193.54 advanced when Gene Conway's Corvette caught fire on the line. Larry Reyes broke in the Hawaiian advancing Alley in the semifinal with an easy 9.57. In the final, Siroonian broke, giving Ray a free 7.57/199.55 victory. At OCIR for an eight-car show on December 6, 20 cars showed, and it took a 7.51 to qualify. Ray's 7.53/198.23 was only good for the first alternate. He did qualify on December 14 for an eight-car show at Irwindale when a 7.64 qualified #4. A first-round 7.54/189.86 beat Fred Goeske's 7.70/174, but in the semis, Reyes' 7.27/199 stopped his 7.74/194.98. It was a good season for Alley.

Notes: Burkhart's new '69 Camaro built by Don Hardy used a 118" wheelbase chassis. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used a stock displacement 427 Chevy with Mondello heads. He used Howards for the cam as well as the rods and pistons. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of a Larry Bowers-built blower. Claimed hp was 1,200. Mike qualified second with a 7.69 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost in the first round to Clare Sanders. On July 19, Burkhart was at St. Louis for its 1/8 Mile Championships. He lasted until round two before his 5.28 lost to eventual winner Arnie Behling's 5.10 in Ed Shartman's Cougar. The following week (July 26), he was in Dallas for an eight-car show. Mike had a close opening round race against Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar." The Camaro's 7.80/185.56 nipped the Cougar's 7.84/186. Gene Snow got crossed-up against him in the semifinal and shut off while Burkhart advanced with a 7.69/190.00. He faced Leonard Hughes in the final, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was running about two-tenths better at this race. Sure enough, Hughes ran his slowest time of the race, a 7.67/207, which was more than enough to defeat Burkhart. The next day, he was at Corpus Christi for a best of three march race against Leslie. In the first race, the Cougar's 7.99/181 won. But while doing his burnout for their second race, Leslie broke and could not run after that. Mike ran two solo passes for the match race victory with best times of 8.30/153.84. Mike went to St.Louis on August 10 for AHRA's fourth Grand American race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.76/187. In round one, his 7.79 lost to Curtis Wasson's quick-leaving 7.92. But Wasson had burned a piston and could not return for the semifinal. So Burkhart got back into the show on the "break rule." He didn't stick around long as he fouled against Ronnie Runyan. At the AHRA All-American at Bristol, a sixteen-car show was staged during qualifying on September 6. Mike lost a transmission in the first round but repaired it for the actual show the next day. He won his first-round race with a 7.87 that advanced over Clyde Morgan, who lost a trans in his Javelin. Jim Maybeck set Low ET of the meet in the second round with a 7.32 that put Mike's Camaro on the trailer. The following week (September 13), he raced at Nashville's King of the Funnies meet. He went 7.80 in the first round over Ronnie Hunter, and he beat Frank Oglesby's Cougar in the semis. But a final round 7.92 gave him the runner-up spot as Ronnie Runyan's 7.83/183 bested him. It was on to Dallas for an eight-car show on September 20. Mike ran a first-round 7.87 that beat John Dekker's quicker 7.85. He lost fire on the line in the semifinal against Cogo Eads. Mike faced off against Leonard Hughes at Southland Dragway on September 28. The Candies and Hughes car had been turning in some big numbers, so it was a tough race. Hughes had his linkage break in the first race, giving Burkhart a solo 8.44/169.19 for the win. In the second race, his 8.13/172.08 lost to Hughes' 7.56/189. The last race saw Hughes hook up to a 7.46/184 for the match race win over Mike's 8.23/171.76. Also 7.76 low qualifier at 1969 AHRA Grand American at St. Louis. Set a 7.51 Pittsburgh track record. He ran 7.52 at LaPlace.

Notes: AKA Super Swinger. Popular Georgia Low Bucker. Mike Gagnon information. Tommy was at Bristol in June for the AHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, he blew the transmission in the first round, against Dick Harrell. Won NHRA Division 2 but burned the car and had to be replaced at the World Finals by Huston Platt (who also drove for Tommy on occasion). Ran 6.28 at Southeastern International in Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Notes: In the Fall of 1971, photojournalist Jon Asher made initial runs at Orange County International Raceway in an attempt to obtain his NHRA fuel funny car license. At OCIR, he made a couple of half-track shots and a pair of timed runs an 8.71/175.78 and an 8.09/183.29. More runs would need to be made, and plans for attempts in California in early 1972 were tentatively set. The California runs never materialized, and it was decided to make the passes in March at Gainesville Raceway after the completion of the Gatornationals. Jon made three runs at Gainesville, an abbreviated run where Jon's fire boot got caught under the throttle pedal, a good straight as a string pass of 7.47/192.70, and an engine exploding, on fire pass of 8.92/82.94. Fuel funny car drivers Gary Henderson (Super Duster) and Cecil Lankford (Brand-X), along with track manager Terry Earwood signed for Jon's license. Jon also agreed that before he made any runs in competition, he would make some additional passes to get within the NHRA required National Record plus ten percent rule, which required a new licensee to make a full pass within ten percent of the current National Record. Two different articles about Jon's experiences were published in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, "Update: Driving A Funny Car" March 1972 and "It's On Fire" July 1972.

Notes: Direct Drive backed Tirend Activity Booster. For the 1969 season, Tom bought the Candies and Hughes '68 Barracuda (yes, a Logghe car - C&H would go to Don Hardy for '69), installed a Tim Beebe 392 with direct drive, and qualified no. 1 at the Winternationals. At '69 Springnationals, he was runner up to Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mach 1. He only ran this car one year. The next year would see the Hot Wheels saga begin. | At the AHRA Winternationals, Tom failed to qualify, running a best of 7.97/193. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.79/193.96 (Low ET) but lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.60 in the first round, with an 8.96. At Bakersfield, Tom ran a first-round 7.78/196.93 (Top Speed) over Ray Alley (8.18/187.50), but a second 7.78/196.73 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.70/195.65 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22. On May 4 at Aquasco, he lost to Tommy Grove's 7.91/191.08 in the first round, with an 8.23/164.53. On May 11, he lost a match race against Charlie Allen at Suffolk. At the AHRA Springnationals, a 7.82 qualified him fifth, and he made it to the semifinal before Leonard Hughes ran a 7.52/202.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Tom's 7.70/188. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified third with a 7.78/184.04 and ran 7.63/185.56 over Gas Ronda, a 7.67 over Sid Foster's quicker 7.60, and a semifinal 7.57 over Fritz Callier. A broken rear end ended his chances against Ongais in the final. On June 22 at Aquasco, he lost to Lew Arrington's 8.07/187.88 in the first round, when he smoked the tires to an 8.71/152.28 loss. On July 9 at Atco's fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Frank Oglesby's 7.76/194.80 beat him in the first round. At Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 16, a first-round 8.07/181.44 failed to beat Jim Liberman's 7.50/177.86 (Low ET). On August 2, Tom singled in the first round, over Ron Rivero at the PHR Championships, who shut off in the K&G Mustang. But in the second round, he broke, giving Dick Loehr a solo into the semis. At the US Nationals, Tom qualified in both Top Fuel and Funny Car with his 'Cuda qualified tenth with a 7.478/206.42. But when good friend John Mulligan had his crash, Tom left to be at the hospital with him. - Ron Howard

Notes: This photo is Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, a '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto. | Ran 7.50s at 190 plus in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. On February 16, an 8.43 qualified ninth at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Championships. He met number one qualifier Clare Sanders in the first round, and got crossed up and lost to Sanders' 7.84/183. He met Fred Goeske at Suffolk on April 13 for a best of three match race. An 8.20/173.74 won the first race when Goeske's 'Cuda got out of shape. A not so pretty 8.95/170.13 won the second race over Fred's troubled 11.48/110. But a blown head gasket kept him from winning three straight. Another match race was run on April 26 at Capitol where he faced off against Clare Sanders. Sanders beat him two straight with a 7.97/176 best while Durham ran a best of 8.38/176.81. On May 4, he ran at the Aquasco Funny Car Invitational, but a first-round 8.13/180.00 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.84/187. He returned to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27. Don Schumacher's 7.84/194 best Durham's 8.18/184.04 in the first round, but Malcolm had some great luck when Schumacher blew his transmission while winning his semifinal race over Ron Rivero. Liberman had beat a fouling Leonard Hughes, so the final should have been Liberman vs Schumacher. With the break rule in effect, Rivero should have filled in, but he too lost a trans. They went back to Low ET loser from the first-round. That was Durham. In the final Durham fouled away a 7.93/185.94 while Jim ran an 8.14/184 for the victory. Lew Arrington faced off against Malcolm at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28. Durham won his first race against Arrington, but then broke in the second race and lost. He couldn't fix it for the third race and Lew singled for the match race victory.

Notes: J&E body. Chassis by Mike Hoag/Blairs. Have photos of this car running a 427 Chevrolet in 1969. | After installing a Hemi in this car late April, Steve showed up at OCIR on May 3 for the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. He qualified #3 in the four-car GM team with a 7.81/189.46. In his first race, he beat the Parts Mart Camaro with a 7.77/191.84. And a 7.89/184.42 beat Ron Leslie's 8.28/182 in his second race. On May 31, at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR, he lost a driveshaft and the race against Rusty Delling in the first round, but he qualified well in the sixteen-car field with a 7.87/181.08 being good for #5 spot. Bovan ran an 8.09 to qualify ninth at the PDA Championships on July 19. He improved to a 7.90 in the first round, but still lost to Dave Beebe's 7.45. A sixteen-car race was run at Irwindale on July 26 and Steve's 7.98 just got in (#16) and he lost early. On October 11, Steve attempted to qualify at OCIR for the Funny Car Open. On a 7.71/196.65 pass, the car blew a motor and burst into flames. He was OK, but the car was out of the race. The 7.71 would have been good for the fifth qualifier.

Notes: Don was driving the "Beach City" car at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.65 and in the first round, his 7.68/179.28 beat Lenarth's bad handling "Holy Toledo" Jeep. In the second round, his 7.48/201.34 beat Larry Reyes' 7.57/198 in the "Hawaiian." His run came to an end in the semifinals when he fouled against Clyde Morgan.

Notes: Al was at Maple Grove on April 12 as a backup car for a best of three match race between Bill Flynn and Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." Hanna blew his engine in the first race and was unable to continue. Phillips filled in. In the next race, Flynn won with an 8.00/185 over Earl's 8.07/174.43. In the final race, the "Baltimore Bandit's" 8.33/173.41 lost to the "Yankee Peddler's" 7.71/186. Earl won the NHRA Funny Car circuit race held at Cayuga, Ontario, on July 5. A first-round 8.17/175 advanced when Huston Platt blew his engine on the line. He actually lost to Bill Flynn in the semifinal, but Flynn broke on the line in the final, and Earl was there to take his place. He faced Mel Perry, and Phillips ran 7.92/183 for the victory over Mel's 8.20/178. Mike Gagnon information.

Notes: Delling drove the Javelin to several wins. The most notable was the 'World News Nationals' in Kansas City in 1969. At the HRM Championships on March 16, Rusty ran an 8.10 to qualify #13. In the first round, an 8.12/180.72 lost to Rich Siroonian. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22 when 22 cars showed for an eight-car field. He was in good company as Tom McEwen, Ray Alley, Dick Loehr, Dale Pulde and others, all failed in their bids to make the field. He raced at the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3, where an 8.70 qualified second on the AMC team. In the first race, Gordon Mineo's 7.95/178 beat his 8.23/179.28. Rusty ran a 9.49/173.41 in the second race over a broken Dave Beebe. A week later, on May 10, he was at Lions for an eight-car show where an 8.22 qualified #4. He improved that time to an 8.14 in the first round, but lost to Larry Fullerton. An 8.07 qualified #13 at OCIR for the Funny Car 500 on May 31. Steve Bovan lost a driveshaft in the first round, against him. Unfortunately, in round two, it was Delling's turn to have trouble when his car caught fire while staging. He was ok, but out of the race. Back at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships, an 8.26 qualified #11. He failed to make it into the final round. He lost a close one to Ed Lenarth's 7.87/165 to Rusty's 7.92/167.39 in the first round, at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale on August 16. Another first-round loss came at Lions on August 30 for the Drag News Nationals. Johnny Wright's 7.78/192 beat the Javelin's ailing 9.20/176.12. As the season went on, the little Javelin seemed to pick up the pace. On September 1, a 7.90 qualified #7 for an eight-car show at Irwindale. He lost with an even better 7.84/186.36 in the first round, to Wright's 7.81. Another eight-car show followed on September 6 at OCIR. An 8.03 qualified #6, but he improved to a first-round 7.81/182.55 over a crossed-up Larry Fullerton. In the semifinal, a blown transmission ended his chances against Mike Van Sant. On September 13, Lions held another eight-car show, but they decided to run two fields with so many cars on hand. The top eight were in bracket one, and the cars that failed to make the top eight were in bracket two. Delling failed to make the top eight, so he raced in the second field of cars. Unfortunately, an off-pace 8.67/182.18 lost to Bob Smith's 7.82/173 in the first round.

Notes: Rusty failed to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals, but so many cars showed that the first eight non-qualifiers raced. He won their race, beating Larry Arnold in the "Super 'Cuda" in the final. Rusty also did not qualify at the NHRA Winternationals (no time). He ran 7.73 at Lions this year.

Notes: Morgan drove Dick Harrell's Camaro to a win at AHRA's Kansas State Championships. He ran a best of 7.52/191.08 on the way to victory. On June 7, he ran at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme in the first round, with a 7.63/188.00. In his second round race, a 7.83/183.28 advanced when Roger Lindamood blew a transmission. But in the semifinals, a 7.52 lost to Gene Snow's Low ET of the meet 7.34/196.

Notes: As far as I know, this car always ran a 427 Chevrolet, not a Hemi. Confusing owner-driver situation on this one. I have Pete Bagnard and Engle as owners. Drivers 'listed' included Pete Bagnard, Bill Bradford, Bob Smith, Jim McEvoy and Jess Tyree. Time entered here credited to Pete Bagnard, but no way of actually knowing who was driving. In a for sale ad late in 1969, car was credited with running 7.80s at 185/190 mph. This ad was run prior to a race at Irwindale late in 1969. At this race, the car blew the blower and the roof off, ran a good 7.57/191.08, Bagnard listed as driver. - Dennis Doubleday

Notes: Randy Walls entered the Funny Car wars by purchasing Hayden Proffitt's old Corvair. The Corvair was destroyed at Irwindale in a crash with yet another Corvair, this one being the "Pisano Brothers" car being driven by Joe Pisano. Walls escaped without injury, but the car was demolished. He then built this Nova in two and a half months by himself. He built both the 116.5" chassis and the 427 Chevy engine. The engine used Howards rods, Jahns pistons, and a Crower cam. Valley Head Service did the cylinder heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and the GMC 6/71 was overdriven 27%. Walls was also responsible for setting up the blower. The 50% nitro was fed to the motor by Hilborn injection. Randy attempted to qualify his Nova (don't think he ever used the Corvair in '69 as the first OCIR All-Pro race for '69 was run in December '68 and he used the Nova there as well) at the second OCIR All-Pro on February 9, but his 7.90 failed to make the eight-car field. On February 16 at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas, he lost to Pat Foster's 7.90/192.30 in the first round. On February 22 for an eight-car race at Lions, Walls beat Gary Crane's Javelin in the first round, but he lost to Ray Alley in the semis. At the HRM Championships, he qualified fourteenth with an 8.11. In the first round, his 8.10/173.74 was no match for Dave Beebe's 7.88/192.71 in the Super Chief. At the final OCIR All-Pro on March 29, Danny Ongais' 7.53/192.30 beat His 7.99/177.51 in the first round. Ongais (7.63/184.80) beat Walls again in the first round, on April 13 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. An 8.05 qualified the Nova in the dreaded fifth spot (had to race number one qualifier). Irwindale hosted a sixteen-car show on April 26 and Walls ran a first-round 7.88/171.42 over Larry Fullerton (7.93/184.42). In the second round, Mike Van Sant's 7.82/190.66 dropped his 7.89/183.66. On May 3 OCIR held its second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. Randy's 7.78/183.66 qualified the Nova second on the GM team. In round one his 8.05/181.44 beat alternate Ron Runyan (8.36/180.72), who fouled. He also won his third round race (8.11/182.96) over Ray Alley who fouled away a 7.70/192.30. Randy was back at Irwindale on May 17 for an eight-car show where Rich Siroonian's 7.74/192.30 beat his 7.81/180.36 in the first round. At a Fremont race, still in May, Randy set Low ET at 7.79, but he failed to make the finals. At OCIR's Funny Car 500 on May 31, a 7.95/179.28 qualified his Nova in the top half (seventh) of the field. A first-round 7.72/187.50 advanced when Skip Hess fouled. Leroy Hales' 8.33/184.04 fell to Randy's 7.81/187.11 in round two and a 7.95/185.95 got him into the finals when Clyde Morgan (8.38/181.81) smoked his tires. Against Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian in the final, he ran a sub-par 8.49/178.57 to Reyes' long-gone 7.63/200.07. At the PHR Championships on August 2, Randy's first-round 7.69/180.72 beat Don Schumacher (7.86/191.08). In the second round, he beat Charlie Allen, but in the semis, his trans let go and he had to watch Fred Goeske make a single on his way to the final. On September 13, Nashville held its first King of the Funnies meet. Randy ran a 7.85 in the first round, to beat Gene Snow's quicker 7.75 (Low ET). In the semis, Ronnie Runyan's Corvair beat him. Marv Eldridge's 7.62 beat Randy's 8.17 in the first round, on October 11 at OCIR's Funny Car Open Race. But due to the break rule, Walls got back in and faced off with Eldridge again in the final with the same results. Marv's 7.56/187.50 beat his ailing Nova's 9.10/170.13. On October 25 at Lions for the East/West Championships, Don Schumacher's 7.49/188.67 put Wall's 7.59/188.67 on the trailer in the first round. Sears Point also had a North/South race run on November 2 and Walls ran well, but failed to make the final. On November 23, Irwindale held a 32 car race. Randy lost in round one, to Jake Johnston's 7.36/187.50 in Gene Snow's second car. On December 6 at OCIR for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with a 7.49/195.65 and beat alternate Ray Alley in the first round, with a 7.65/192.30. In the semis, he fouled away a 7.63/194.80 against Reyes' 7.53/195.22. The following weekend (Dec 14) at Irwindale, he failed to qualify. - Ron Howard

Notes: Swensen was at Englishtown in September for its Fallnationals. In the first round, his 7.86/180 beat Gary Richard's "Black Shadow," but Arne hurt some parts and could not return for the semifinal. Shortly after that, he was at Atco for the final NHRA Division One race. He made it to the final, where he lost to Fred Goeske. Also confirmed 7.72 at Englishtown 1970. | Early (392) hemi/TorqueFlite combo. Featured in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car. The article claimed unattributed best times (late in '70 season) of "7.40s and speeds of 193 mph." - RT

Notes: Clyde started the season at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A 7.55 qualified him fourth, and a sideways 8.05 beat Gene Conway's 8.25 in the first round. Gordon Mineo got out of shape against him in the second round, and his 7.88/178.21 advanced. In the semifinal, Don Hampton fouled, giving Morgan a free ride into the finals. Johnny Wright's 7.84/189 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang beat Clyde's close 7.92/186.72. He then went to OCIR for the first All-Pro race on Jan 4. Conway turned the tables on Morgan by beating him in the first round. He attempted to qualify for the second All-Pro race held on the 18th, but he could not better the 7.57 "bump" it took to join the eight-car field. Another first-round loss came at Irwindale on January 26 when Ken Safford's 7.58/197 in the Mr. Norm Charger beat the Javelin's 8.06/146.57. Safford had Morgan's number when he again defeated him in the first round on February 15 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. Morgan qualified fifth with a 7.85 and ran a first-round 7.86/185.18 that lost to Ken's 7.56/188. On February 22, at the third OCIR All-Pro event, Clyde singled in the first round when Mike Snively's car failed to fire. Unfortunately, Clyde fouled away a 7.56 against Jake Johnston, who set Low ET with a 7.26 in the semifinal.
