Notes: Paul Stefansky was a Ford guy. His first drag car used a supercharged 312 Y-block. His new Mustang for '69 used a Logghe-built 118" chassis. Shedlik built the Fiberglass Mustang body, and it weighed 115 lbs. The engine was a 427 SOHC built by Doug Nash that used a Moldex stroker crank that upped the displacement to 488. Ernie McEwen modified the cylinder heads. The exhaust port was transformed from its original D-shape into a round port. The exhaust valves now measured 2.2 while the intakes were stock at 2.06. Crane cams were used, as well as M/T rods and pistons. Nash lowered the compression to 5:1, raising the nitro percentage from 65% to 70%. The Enderle injection sat on a blower that Dean McCann of Doug Nash Racing set up. It ran at 28% overdrive. A C-6 transmission fed the power to a Detroit Locker rear with 3.56 gears. | On the car's third time out, Paul set a 7.80 track record at Milan. He attempted to better this on his next run but blew the motor. It was rebuilt, and within a few weeks, he was running 191 at Memphis, and a 190 pass at New York followed that. January '70 issue of Rodder and Super Stock claimed a best ET of 7.50. On June 3, Paul raced at Connecticut for their Memorial Day Championships. A first-round 8.01/164 won his first-round race, but Al Graeber's 7.80/186 beat the Super Stang's 7.98/157 in round two. At the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul got even with Graeber by beating him in round one with a 7.84. A second-round 7.85 beat a crossed-up, Lew Arrington. In the semis, a 7.91/173 beat Tony Wahlay's 7.92/183. In the final, Jim Liberman's 7.73/189 beat his off-pace 8.18. Clare Sanders met Paul at Epping for a best two out of three match race in July. Unfortunately for Paul, he lost three straight to Clare. He was back at Epping on September 21 for an eight-car show. Bruce Larson lost third gear in his first-round race against him, and Paul's 7.70/175 advanced to the semifinal. A 7.88/181 lost to Arrington's 7.38/199, ending his bid for the title. On October 26, at an eight-car show in Connecticut, Paul won his first-round race over Bill Flynn with a 7.72/197.80. His speed was good enough for a new track record if he could back it up. He did back it up in the semifinals, running a 7.72/196.22 that lost to Larson's 7.50/196. ET from (1/70 Rodder & Super Stock) |

Notes: Replaced converted 69 flip top Corvette gasser which was sold to George Kirby in 1971 who resumed its operation as a blown gasser. The Challenger was a legitimate flopper that ran in late 70, but was burned to the ground. It was replaced in 1971 with a Camaro featuring a horrid paint scheme depicting a black widow with the Isky logo adorning its abdomen. This car too burned up, but Lombardo suffered severe burns prompting a temporary surrendering of driving chores to Steve Plueger. | John was at Irwindale on July 17 for a sixteen-car show (but only 14 cars showed). He qualified #12 with an easy 8.46/160.42. A first-round 7.77 beat Dave Condit's 8.20 in the "L. A. Hooker" and in round two he got around Larry Fullerton's Maverick. Unfortunately, John's Challenger broke and was unable to run in the semifinals. A week later (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Once again he worked his way into the semifinals before breakage took him out. A first-round 7.50/169.81 advanced when Barry Kelly fouled against him. In round two, Ed McCulloch also fouled against him, throwing away a 7.26/193. But in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a transmission against Condit. He was at the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 15, but his first-round 7.57/192.30 lost to Arnie Behling's 7.19/208 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. |

Notes: This new photo is the second chassis during the last year of touring. Note that the spoiler on the roof has been removed, and a large aluminum spoiler is now on the rear. I can't remember where this was taken. We ran consistent mid 7's on tour with this set-up. Oh, to be young again. - WG | Gunter was at Beeline Dragway on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32 car field, and his 7.84 qualified easily. In the first round, he faced Sam Miller but was shut off with a water leak, giving Miller a solo into round two. In July, Gunter went to Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Bob Parmer's AA/FA Fiat. Warren caught Bob napping in their first race, and his 7.56/181.08 beat the Fiat's much quicker 7.13/187. Bob won the second race with a 7.69/185 when the VW broke and slowed to 7.95/138.46. Gunter came back in the third race to win the match with a 7.50/185.56, beating Bob's 7.85/173. On August 12, Warren was at Numidia Dragway for a best-of-three-match race against Pete Hill. It wasn't the little VW's day as it lost all three races. Still, Gunter did manage a 7.22/189.86 best. His other runs were 7.62/157.89 and 7.31/186.32. That wasn't far off of Pete's 7.18/203 best. In September, this little bug went all the way to the final at New England's Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and Warren beat Frank Oglesby in the opening round and a 7.65 at only 145.16 in round two beat Fred Goeske. He beat Dean LaPole's Chevy-powered "King Camaro" in the third round, and Bob Cain crossed the centerline against him in the semifinals. He went up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and the VW went every which way but straight, slowing to a 10.69 runner-up finish to Jim's 6.95. In a December issue of Dag News, the car was offered for sale for $4,500.The ad did not state if the engine was included. |

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best, but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight-car show at New York on October 13. He singled in the first round, when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. - RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s. |

Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32 car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale. |

Notes: Beebe started the season in Nelson Carter's Super Chief at the Irwindale New Year's Day race, where he qualified third with a 7.63. A first-round 7.65/193.54 beat Jess Tyree (7.96/180.72). But the Charger broke and could not be fixed for round two. He beat Rich Siroonian in the first round, at the AHRA Winternationals, but a 7.64 by Dick Harrell beat him in the second round. An 8.277/188.28 qualified the car tenth at the NHRA Winternationals, but he got crossed-up against Don Schumacher in the first round, and lost. On February 9 at OCIR, Beebe showed up driving a top fuel dragster. At Bakersfield, he drove both, losing in the first round, in both classes. In the funny, he lost to Danny Ongais (7.80/196.07) in the first round, with a 7.97/185.95. He again drove in both Top Fuel and Funny Car at the HRM Championships, losing in both classes in round two. He qualified the Charger sixth with a 7.86 and beat Randy Walls (8.10/173.74) with a 7.88/192.71 in the first round. Pat Foster's 7.66/191.48 dropped his 7.78/196.50 in the next frame. On March 22, for an eight-car meet at Lions, Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 7.51/195.65, but both he and Mike Van Sant ran identical numbers of 8.08/188.67 with Van Sant's Corvette advancing. He showed up at the final OCIR All-Pro event but broke in the first round, advancing Don Schumacher. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Gabelich was one of 19 cars at Lions on May 24, trying to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he failed to make the field. Gary set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.81/195.65 on June 14 at OCIR for the Benefit Race. In an all-Corvette final, he lost to Johnny Wright with Gary's 7.85/190.67 losing to Wright's 8.01/188.28. On June 21 at Lions for the AHRA Grand American Championships, Gary lost to another Corvette, this time in the semifinal where Mike Van Sant dropped him with a 7.41/195 to his 8.14/181. Another runner-up finish followed with Gabelich running a 7.51/184.80 best on June 28 at Lions before losing in the final to Bob Smith's 7.61/182 in Tom Storm's Corvair. Gary was close with a 7.87/177 in the final. A 7.56 qualified him second on July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, and he made it to the semifinals before smoking his tires against Larry Fullerton. Gary lost in the first round, again to Bob Smith at Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12. A red light in the semifinals ended his chances for a win at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19. And the semifinal finishes continued on August 2 at Lions, where Gordon Mineo got him. Gary got Mineo back at OCIR on August 9 when Mineo fouled to Gary's 7.64/182.92 in round one; again, a semifinal finish resulted. Only this time, Gary brushed the guardrail while losing to Dave Beebe. Then the dreaded Corvette curse hit the team on August 16 at Irwindale. After running a 7.65/198.66 in round one, Gary advanced into the final against Frank Pisano's Corvair. In the final, the car caught fire, and Gary jumped out while the car was still rolling down the track. He received one slight burn on his left leg, but the car burned to the ground. |

Notes: One of just three Torino funny car bodies made. Terry Ivey and Phil Bonner had the other two. Arnold drove the car at the AHRA Winternationals, but lost to Leonard Hughes in the first round. On February 23, he was at Courtland for a best of three match race against Bobby Wood. In the first race, Wood fouled and in the second, Arnold crossed the centerline. The deciding race was won by Larry in convincing fashion when he ran a track record 7.51. - RH |

Notes: The car burned badly at OCIR. Mert was competing at OCIR's East-West Meet in early October. He left the line and the car went into a wheelstand. He got off the pedal and the car crashed down hard, throwing the body off the chassis. The chassis ended up doing a number of rolls before coming to a flaming stop. Luckily, Littlefield was OK. |

Notes: Boggs was at the OCIR Manufacturer's meet in the first week of November. Unfortunately, he had lots of problems. In his first race, he got out of shape and shut off against Kosty Ivanof, who had his parachute fall out but his 7.51 still won. In his second race, the car broke against John Lombardo. Ezra did not run any NHRA national events in 1981. Photo from Green Valley match race. |

Notes: Big budget with Charger top. On March 16 at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show, Garcia ran 8.01/180.36 and 8.13/178.57 to reach the final against Fritz Callier. A final 8.12/181.44 won the meet over Callier's 8.47/178. He faced Tommy Grove in a best of three match race at Kingston on April 13. In the first race, Grove not only fouled, but he broke a rear end as well, so Garcia's 8.93 took the win. Grove was unable to repair his Mustang so Henry made two solo passes to win the match. He ran 8.98/173.03 and 7.70/180.00. Henry raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8, running a first-round 7.83/170.50 over Ron Rivero's off pace 8.59/169. Unfortunately, Tony Wahlay's 8.13 beat him in round two. On July 6, he faced Leonard Hughes at LaPlace for a match race. He ran an 8.02/162.74 in the first race that lost on Hughes' 7.78/196 and in the second race he broke a driveshaft giving Hughes a two straight match race win. Also in July, he raced at the Sunset Dragstrip 1/8 mile Championships. Joe Black fouled against him in the first round, and a 5.10 by eventual winner Bruce Larson beat him in round two. At the Drag World Funny Car Championships at Dragway 42, West Salem, he fouled against Don Biggers in the first round. On September 7, he raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk where all eight-cars made three runs. An off pace 9.70-95.56 lost his first race to Arnie Behling's 7.90/178. In the second race, a blown transmission gave Lew Arrington an 8.06/129 single. In the third race, a 7.75/166.97 beat Ron Rivero's close, 7.76. He raced at Connecticut the following day (September 8) with and there he beat Bob Veselka with an 8.64/125.34 in the first round. He advanced past a broken Mel Perry in the second round with a 9.16/150.75. In the semifinals, Rivero got him back for the loss the day before. A holeshot 8.19/183 by Ron beat Henry's quicker 8.11/143.31. |

Notes: Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. | On June 8, at Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships, he ran an 8.17 in the first round, over Gary Crane's Javelin, and an 8.09/180 beat Mike Van Sant's 8.08/184 in the semifinal. In the final, Mike picked it up a bit to an 8.04, but it was a runner-up effort to Johnny Wright's 7.92/184 in the Hellfire Corvette. At the Irwindale Fourth of July race, an 8.03 qualified sixth. He lost to Dave Beebe in the first round. Mike ran a 7.71 Deer Park track record in July. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars racer. Jack Chrisman's new 118" Fletcher-built Mustang was a thing of beauty. The Shedlik built body was painted a light metallic red. The stock bore and stroke 427 SOHC used M/T rods supporting Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane cams were used. A four-port Hilborn Injector sat on the Don Hampton-built blower. It sat on a stock Ford intake manifold for blower applications. The blower drive came from Delta. Doug's Headers were also used. The transmission was a B&M reworked C-6. A Detroit Locker rear with 3.50 gears put the power to the ground. | The car could win at car shows, but Jack had a rough year at the track. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. On March 22, he again failed to make the field at Lions for an eight-car show. Twenty-two cars attempted to make the show. On April 20, Chrisman faced Fred Goeske at Gary, Indiana, for a best of three match. He had a bad day as he lost three straight. In their first race, Fred's 7.70/173 beat his 8.14/160. Both got quicker in the second race, where Fred's 7.63/193 got the better of Jack's 7.94/181. Both ran their best times in the last race, with Fred's 7.60/197 leading Chrisman's 7.87/188 through the traps. Amarillo, Texas, held a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on April 27, but Jack failed to make the final round. Another Cavalcade race was held at Epping on June 15, and he lost all three of his races, running a best of only 8.96/139.50. In June, he was at Maple Grove for another Cavalcade race but again failed to make the final. On August 17, for National Trail's Cavalcade event, Jack won his first race with an 8.20 over Marv Eldridge's 8.26. He broke at half-track in the second race but won when Goeske fouled away a 7.97. He lost his third-round race to Kelly Chadwick's 8.78 with an ailing 9.40. On September 7 at Shelby International Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500, Chrisman won his first-round race when Roger Lindamood broke. But Lindamood got in with the break rule in effect and was matched against Chrisman again in the second round. This time Roger set a 7.44 track record in beating Jack. The highlight of his season had to be at Indy, where Jack qualified #13 for the US Nationals with a 7.520 and had a Top Speed at 206.42. A first-round 7.663/200 beat Dick Loehr's quicker 7.56/193, but in the second round, his 7.72/196 wasn't enough to beat Leonard Hughes's 7.25/201. On October 18, a Cavalcade race was held at Lions, but in the first round, he ran a blower-popping 8.13/177.51 that lost to Marv Eldridge's 7.84/180. | The Coke circuit ad from 1969 listed Jack's best times at 7.57/193.91. |

Notes: First 200 mph pass at Numidia. Hanna owned the car fully, but Flynn was involved to use the car name. On June 8, he ran at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. On July 20, he faced off against Terry Hedrick at Lebanon in a best two out of three match race. Terry's 7.31/200 beat Al's 7.95/176.50 in the first race, but Al came back to win the second to tie up the score. Terry took the win and the match in the final race with a track record 7.29/200 over Hanna's 7.62/191.40. Suffolk had an eight-car show on September 7, with all cars getting in three runs. Al won his first race with a 7.52/187.10 over Malcolm Durham, who lost fire. In his second race, he broke and watched Connie Kalitta single for a win. He ran a 7.65/180.00 for the win in the third race when Arnie Behling fouled in Ed Schartman's Cougar. The following day (September 8), he ran at Connecticut. A first-round 7.63/178.92 beat Curt Wasson's 8.26/180. In the second round, a good 7.65/192.70 wasn't good enough, as Clare Sanders' slower 7.75/184.42 beat him to the line. |

Notes: The New Dark Horse. Ken drove the Mustang on April 27 at Amarillo for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. This was his first Cavalcade race. He lost to Norm Weekly's 8.04 in the Mr. Norm Charger in the first round. He then went to Gary, Indiana, for the next Coke race. In the first round, his 7.81/199.81 lost to eventual winner Fred Goeske's 7.53/196. Safford came back out for a consolation race where his 7.64/199 beat Marv Eldridge. The next Coke race was held at Capitol Raceway on June 7. Safford's late 7.93 in the opening round lost to Goeske's 8.08. Fred could not return for the semifinal, so Ken got back into the show on the "break rule." In the semifinal, Kelly Chadwick fouled against him. In the final, his 7.98/185.94 finished runner-up to Gary Dyer's 7.83/190 in the "Mr. Norm" car. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, he lost to Eldridge's 8.11/184 in his first race but came back to win his second race over Jack Chrisman 8.90/169.50 to 8.96/139, and won the third race with an even slower time, a 9.59/105 when Dick Bourgeois lost a rear end on the line. At the National Trail Cavalcade race on August 17, Safford ran a first-round 7.99 to beat Jess Tyree's 8.15 Firebird. He lost his second race when the car came up ailing against Dick Bourgeois, who ran a 7.75/189 over Ken's 8.93. In his third race, Tyree's 8.15/184 beat his 8.28. Safford attempted to qualify at the US Nationals, but his 7.55/185.18 best fell just short of the 7.54 bump. - RH | A Coca-Cola circuit ad from 1969 cited 7.52/196.38 bests at the time. |
