Notes: Hampton had notoriety in the mid-60s with twin-engined side by side AA/Comp dragster. Basically relied on his experience in building a similar rig powered by twin blown alky LT-I 350s. The car ran mid 7s. Hampton was 1970 NHRA Winternationals Top Gas champ, too. | Don ran this car at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 28. He beat Ron Goodsell's quicker 7.72/190 in the first round, with a 7.89/193.50. In the second round, he singled with a 7.90/192.71 when Ray Alley was shut off on the line with problems. In the semifinals against Dave Beebe, he fouled away a 7.96/194.54. On April 4, he raced at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Beebe's 7.76/190 stopped him in the first round. He was back at OCIR in April for the Corvette Funny Car Championships where he set Top Speed at 191.89, but failed to make it to the finals. On May 2, OCIR held their Big Four Championships. It was supposed to be a 32 car field, but only 28 cars showed. Don got past the first-round when Dale Armstrong's car caught fire. In the second round, an 8.41/190.67 beat Ed Carter's 8.92/139. He lost to Gene Conway's 8.13/153 in the third round with an off pace 9.05/113.49. He lost to Vic Morse's 7.72/197 in the first round, at the OCIR Funny Car 500 on May 30. His 7.99/189.87 wasn't enough to get around the other Corvette. Irwindale held a Tom Ferraro Benefit race on June 6. Don ran a first-round 7.98/190.66 to get past a fouling Dick Poll. In the semifinal of the eight-car show, he beat Gary Densham's out of shape 8.19/180 with a 7.96/190.66. A final round 7.99/190.26 lost to Armstrong's 7.73/187. At the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 3, Hampton got out of shape and crossed the center line in the first round, and lost to Leroy Hales' 7.95/188. He did the same thing in the very first-round the next day at the Irwindale Fourth of July Championships. This time, he gave Ray Alley a free ride into the second round.

Notes: Mike Gagnon info. | Mel attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he failed to make the show. He had a blower explode that ripped the roof off the Camaro's body. Mel was at Maple Grove on August 22 for the fourth NHRA Division One race. His opening round 8.62/157.89 advanced when Al Hanna broke. But he lost in round two. The next day he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 9.27/109.98 lost to Tom Sneden's 7.47/197. On Sept. 13, he was at Suffolk for the Dixie Drag Classic. While he failed to reach the final, he beat Shirl Greer in the first round, with a 7.52/189.46. In October, Mel installed a Clutchflite transmission in his Camaro. The first time out with the new combination was at Epping on October 25 for an eight-car show. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Bill Flynn.

Notes: Aquasco held an eight-car show on April 4 and Durham was there. It wasn't a good day for him. In the first round, he ran 7.81/186.32 in a loss to Tom Prock who was resetting the track record with a 6.60. After losing, he decided to come back out and make another run. Malcolm improved to 7.52, but the blower exploded and ripped the top off the Camaro. On August 15, Durham was at York's US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He lost to Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round. Malcolm was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American Championships. He lost to eventual winner Gary Dyer in the first round.

Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne

Notes: Jim started his '68 season at Irwindale's New Year's day race by qualifying third with an 8.08 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.18/180 beat Lew Arrington's 8.40/175, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 with a 7.88/180.72 on January 14 at OCIR for an eight-car show and his first-round 7.85/183.28 beat the New Breed. A semifinal 8.02/181.08 beat Gas Ronda's 8.33. In the final, Jim's 7.86/183.28 beat Clare Sanders' 7.71/187.91 in the Limefire. He then went to Lions for the AHRA Winter meet where he qualified way down in twelfth place with an 8.52/141.50 in the 32 car field. He had an easy first-round race, but then ran his best time ever at 7.75/184.80 in round two over Marv Eldridge's 8.08/174. In the third round, he advanced with an 8.18 and in the semifinal, an 8.05 beat Gene Snow's 8.91. He was to face Don Nicholson in the final and Jim was good enough to give Don extra time to fix his transmission he blew in the semis. But the starter signaled for the backup car of Snow to fire just as Nicholson came out of the pits. There was a lot of yelling by racers, officials, and fans, but Liberman beat Snow for the win with a 7.84. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show and an 8.39 qualified Jim eleventh. Arrington ran a first-round 7.95/183 to drop his 8.39/177.86 in the first round. The following day on February 25, he set Low ET at 7.83 in the final while beating Roger Lindamood who fouled in the final at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.89/182.92 beat Steve Bovan (8.32), a second round 7.84/183.28 beat Ray Alley (8.35), and a semifinal 7.86/180.72 beat Arrington (8.20). Thirty funny cars showed to qualify on March 3 for a sixteen-car field at Irwindale and Jim qualified third with an 8.12/178.21. A first-round 7.99/174.41 advanced when Eldridge's Corvette lost fire on the line. A second round 8.18/171.10 beat Fred Goeske's ailing 8.73 and in the semis, he lost to Steve Bovan. In May at Pittsburgh for their Funny Car Championships, he made it into the finals only to lose to a Terry Hedrick holeshot. Jim's better 7.88 lost to Terry's 7.92. Another runner-up finish came on May 18 at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown. He ran well, posting a 7.79/182.18 first-round win over Bill Lawton's 7.96/180, and a second round 7.92/182.18 over Arnie Beswick's 8.17/174. But in the final a 7.85/182.92 was no match for Tom Grove's 7.65/192.70. Another win came on May 30 at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. His final round 7.88/183.28 beat the Kingfish. Aquasco held their third annual Funny Car Invitational in June and a first-round 7.98/181.80 beat a fouling Beswick, but the rest of the meet was rained out. On June 19, Liberman and Grove had a match race at Cecil County. In the first race, Tom's track record 7.52/197.36 beat Jim who fouled away a 7.85/181.08. In the second race, Tom got Jim two straight with a 7.81/193 over JJ. He did better against Nicholson who debuted his new Cougar at a match race at Capitol. Jim won the first race with a 7.66/187.88 when Don blew his trans and rain washed out the other two races so Liberman won the match. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 27, he broke on the line in the first round, advancing Tony Wahlay. He was at Detroit Dragway on August 6 where he drove off the track to avoid hitting some people that were on the track. He was OK, but the car was damaged. Jim ran 185.92 on September 22 for a Maple Grove track record in a match race against Eddie Schartman. JJ's 7.72/184.80 won the first race over Ed's 7.95/177, but another 7.72/185.92 was foiled by the evil red light. Ed won the last race and the match. Another match race was run against Larry Reyes on October 4 at Norwood, Mass. Reyes beat JJ two straight before Jim won the final with a track record 4.94 at 152.54. He then took on Bruce Larson for a best of three match at Cecil on October 6. Jim lost the first race when Larson got a good jump and his 7.64/188 held on to win over JJ's quicker 7.59/187.50. But Jim came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.78/187.50 and 7.81/183.66. At the Lions Funny Car Championships on November 16, Jim set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.65/187.50 and went on to win over Jack Chrisman in the final. He won both his first and semifinal rounds with 7.65's. At the OCIR Manufacturer's meet, he ran a 7.89/181.44 best, but failed to run fast enough to make the final. He qualified second with an 8.20/185 (Top Speed) at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine meet, but lost to Kip Brundage in the first round. Jim won the final race of the year he competed in, the first OCIR All-Pro event of '69, which was run on 12/29/68. He qualified third with a 7.80/182.30 and advanced past the first-round when Charlie Allen broke. He had another easy run in the semis when Randy Walls fouled against him. In the final he ran his all-time bests of 7.53/193.12 to beat Don Schumacher's 7.57/196.50. — Ron Howard

Notes: This photo from Norwalk, Ohio at the Motorcraft Finals in 1988. I did not take this photo, but I was there, under the body of the car. My brother and I worked closely with C.J. Batten from the Batten Performance Group during the development stages of the 4-valve overhead cam motor that Batten manufactured. The designer was Gordie Dollar at the Batten Group (he ran the first prototype motor in a drag boat and won the championship). We were running on alky at this event in the photo. We didn't move up to fuel until after Tosti sponsored us. That was the next year, when Shirl Greer was the driver. We experienced growing pains during the transition, but we were forced by the IHRA to move up. The NHRA would not allow the 4-valve, over head configuration in competition. They refused to review and amend the classification. The IHRA felt it was an unfair advantage because the parts were not available for production at the time. To make any effort to work out any bugs, we tested the car in full view of everyone at events during qualifying attempts. Not exactly what most would want to do. The B-4 was unbelievable, and had we been able to complete development, I feel that we would have changed what was the fuel motor of today. I could write about this for some time, but, space wouldn't allow. The name of our Original car says it all "Awesome." Thanks.

Notes: 1969 Winternationals Funny Car Champion. Featured blown rat, Logghe chassis, Fiberglass Ltd. body, Al Bergler aluminum. | The picture was taken (1969) at Connecticut Dragway when Clare Sanders was racing Don Schumacher. Clare won 2 out of 3 and Don was the first funny car at Connecticut Dragway to go over 200 mph. - Mark Zajac | Confirmed 7.56 at Cecil County. - Danny White |"Jungle Jim" Liberman found himself with so many race dates that he had a second car built for Clare Sanders to drive. The cars were identical with "Goodies Speed Shop" being the sponsor of Liberman's car while Clare's had "Steve Kanuika's Speed Shop" as his sponsor. The Logghe chassis used a 120" wheelbase The engine was a 427 Chevy running Mondello prepared heads. M/T rods held Ansen pistons and a Crower cam was used. The blower was overdriven 26% and on 60% Nitro the Hilborn injected engine produced 1,300 hp. The power was fed back to an Olds rear end. | Sanders started the year by running 8.13 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race qualifying himself #14 in the field. A 7.72 from Charlie Allen stopped his 7.90 in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals, he runner-upped to Dick Harrell's 7.81/187 in the final. Clare was right there with a 7.83/191.08 losing time. Both he and his boss, Jim Liberman, made it into the semifinals where they were matched against one another. Jim won the race when Clare lost an engine, but since they were taking turns driving each of the cars, Jim let Clare drive in the final. At the NHRA Winternationals, an 8.03/191.08 qualified third and in the first round, his 8.09 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.53. A 7.88 won the second round when Ron Leslie lost an engine. In the semifinals, he improved to a 7.80 over Leonard Hughes’ ailing car. In the final, a 7.88/187.89 took home the money over Ray Alley's 8.11/187. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9, an 8.06 failed to qualify. He lost to Harrell again in the final on February 16 at the Miami Winter Championships. He qualified #1 with a 7.93, but improved to a 7.84/183 in the first round, over a crossed up Malcolm Durham. He beat Ed Schartman two straight at Suffolk on April 6. In the first race, a 7.93/187.88 beat Ed's 8.16/173.07 and a 7.85/185.56 won the second race over Ed's 8.30/178.67. Even though he had won the match they ran another race for the fans. Ed's 8.03/177 beat Sanders' 8.45/152.54. Another match race win came over Malcolm Durham on April 26 at Capitol. Clare won two straight with a best of 7.97/176.12. May 4 saw the second Liberman car at Richmond for a match against Ron Rivero in the "Frantic Ford." Clare set a track record 7.77 at 191.08 to win the first race, but an 8.13/187.10 lost to Ron's 8.03/185 in the second race. In the tie-breaking third race, Sanders once again reset the track record with a 7.74 at 192.70 to win the match over Rivero's 8.00 at a track speed record of 197. On May 10 he was at Maple Grove for another best of three match against Charlie Allen. Charlie won the first race and reset Maple Grove's track record to 7.60, but in the second race the Keith Black powered Dart broke and Sanders won with a 7.70/187.50. He ran a solo 8.06/182.54 to win the match when Charlie couldn't repair his wounded car. A rematch was run against Schartman at Connecticut on May 11. Once again, Clare won two straight. This time, Ed lost a motor in the first round, and couldn't run again, leaving Clare a single in the second race to win the match. He had run an 8.19/180.72 in the first race when Eddie blew. Dick Harrell lost to Clare in a match race at Kansas City where Sanders ran a best of 7.62/189.06. On May 16, he won the UDRA meet at Union Grove, setting Top Speed at 189.86 and beating Dick Loehr, Schartman, and Gary Dyer for the title. He ran a 7.63 best. The next day he was in Pittsburgh to do battle with Bill Lawton in a best of three match. A 7.86/182.18 beat Lawton's 8.04/152 and in the second race the Mustang broke so Sanders won the match two straight with a 7.88/181.44. He didn't do so well at Minnesota on June 1 for a four-car match. He lost all three of his races. Loehr's 7.75/184 beat his 7.91/184.04 in the first race. Don Schumacher's 7.58/194 beat his off pace 8.31/175.43 in the second race. And Terry Hedrick's 7.85/172 beat Sanders' 7.84/181.44. Atco held their fourth annual Funny Car Championships on July 9, and Sanders' 7.74/190 advanced past a broken Ron Rivero in the first round. Schartman got a bit of payback when he ran a 7.67/182 over his 7.84/186.32 in the semifinal. Back on the match race trail, he beat Paul Stefansky three straight with a 7.72 best at Epping in July and then met Loehr at US 131 on July 12. He won the first race with a 7.72/187.50 over Dick's quicker 7.58/197. And the second run was much like the first; Clare's 7.68/185.94 beat Dick's quicker 7.62/202. In the third race Loehr, not wanting to be late fouled away a 7.37/203 only to lose to Clare's 7.84/189.46. He competed at the Cars Magazine meet on July 20. He ran a first-round 7.66/189.46 over Mel Perry and a second round 7.56/192.30 beat Schartman's 8.00/178. Then it rained and the semifinals were run on Sunday, July 21. Sanders' 7.72/189.94 beat Frank Oglesby to get into the final against Lew Arrington. In the final, his 7.77 fell short of Arrington's 7.55, giving Sanders another runner-up finish. On July 27, he was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for a match race against Bobby Wood’s Nova. Clare won the first race when Wood had a supercharger explode and rip out his windshield. Bobby managed to fix his car and beat Sanders' 7.56/193 in the second race with a 7.49/198. Wood won the match in the next race with a 7.64/199 over Sanders' 7.89/190. He made it into the semifinal before losing fire against Larry Reyes at the AHRA Nationals on August 17 at New York National. On September 8, Connecticut held a sixteen-car show, but Rivero's 7.71/173 beat Sanders' 7.76/187.10 in the first round. He got back in on the break rule and ran a 7.75/184.42 over Al Hanna's quicker 7.65/192 in the second round. In the semifinal, a 7.56/191 by Arrington put his 7.77/189.46 on the trailer. Sanders broke at half-track in the first round, against his boss, JJ, at the third annual Funny Car Championships at Epping.

Notes: Fred started the year running his 'Cuda from the previous year. It was a good piece attested by his qualifying fifth with a 7.75 out of forty cars trying to make the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He lost in the first round, to Jim Liberman's 7.67/191.08 with a 7.88/184.04. He faced Malcolm Durham at Suffolk on April 13 for a best two out of three match race, but lost the first two races before running a 9.50/159 solo when Malcolm blew a head gasket.

Notes: The full-size Charger run earlier in the season. This was the '68 Logghe car with the full-size Charger body (see ID:79281). In mid-69 Gene replaced the body with the mini-Charger Fiberglass Ltd body with molded in red metalflake (ID:83687) and really began running some big numbers.

Notes: Jim Barillaro built the Torino personally in 1969 with help from Ford and John Healey of Tasca Ford. Limited finances kept the car from being a serious contender, but it was a consistent 7 second car in 1969 and 1970.

Notes: This car also had a long history. After Schroeder ran it in 68, it went to Art Whipple in 69, McCulloch's first FC. Then in 1970, Jerry Ruth bought it, and Frank Hall drove it. Then in 71, Harlan Thompson bought it and crashed it.

Notes: Chrisman was one of the Funny Car pioneers. His '64 Comet was the first of its kind (Dodge Chargers aside). The car inspired the Funny Car class more than any other. He was constantly pushing the envelope, going faster and faster. He had stunned the drag racing world in '67 by running 7.60/191.08 at Indy. So it was sad to see this great driver run so poorly in '70. The car was always (and I mean always!) prone to breakage. His times were way off what they had been even two years earlier. Jack Chrisman had been the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars captain in '69. He withdrew from the Coca-Cola tour for '70. On May 9th, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.19/173.41 lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman who was driving John Mazmanian's car. Jack was at Lions on June 27 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he broke on the line against Dave Beebe in the first round. He also broke on the line in the first round at the OCIR Nitro Championships held on July 3. Eventual winner Arnie Behling advanced when the Mustang broke. The following day he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. Chrisman qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.88, but once again, the car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Dean LaPole's 8.50. He went to Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but there were so many FCs on hand that they created a second eight to run against each other. In the first round of this "second eight," Jack's 8.19/145.16 beat Bob McFarland's quicker 8.11/176. But in the semifinals, breakage persisted, and he slowed to 11.79/72.23 in a loss to Eldridge's 8.38/133. The following week (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #13 with an 8.75, and his ailing 8.59 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Dave Beebe's 8.02. Jack was back at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. This was another sixteen-car show, and his 8.19/170.13 advanced when his opponent, Vic Morse, broke. But it was the same old story in round two when the Mustang broke against Dave Condit. Jack raced at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships held on August 1st. In the first round, Chrisman's ailing 8.69/118.42 lost to Dick Poll's 8.26/180. Jack was at Lions on August 22 for an "open" eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but he had a "grudge race" with another non-qualifier, Marv Eldridge. Jack won their race, with his 7.54/185.56 being one of his better runs of the year. Eldridge lost with a 7.70/168. The Fremont Argus Newspaper in June 1970 noted that Jack's car had an overhead cam Ford.
