Notes: Skuza's first NHRA event of the season was at the Gatornationals. He had lots of problems there, and his 11.20-74.44 best failed to qualify. He did better at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where although he still failed to qualify, he improved to 6.39/155.89. Dean was the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 6.06 best. Things really clicked at Englishtown in May for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His 5.26/274.80 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Cellone in the opening round. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.44/254.02. The next stop was at Topeka at the end of June for the NHRA Western Nationals. Skuza qualified #9 with a 5.41/271.98. But once again, he fell in the first round, this time to Kenji Okazaki. He bypassed the following few events before returning to the schedule at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't an issue. Dean's 7.61/112.55 qualified #14. This time he lost to Chuck Etchell's in round one. Then came Indy, Dean's 5.34/284.09 just made the field qualifying on the "bump." In the first round, his 5.39/269.46 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.15/285. He stepped it up at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.25/277.17 qualified #7. Despite the good qualifying effort, he still lost in the first round to Okazaki. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.08/291.07 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He also got his first-round win of the year when his 5.25/274.47 beat Tom Hoover's 5.35/271. In round two, his 5.26/274.89 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.16/288. He also ran well at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.19/284.45. A slightly better 5.17/290.13 fell o Del Worsham's 5.17/292 in the first round. Dean ran his best ET of 5.087/291.07 at the NHRA Sears/Craftsman Nats, Topeka 1993. He ran 5.088/294.69 for his best speed at the 1993 World Finals. Notes: Pulde qualified #8 at Pomona for NHRA Winternationals with 5.24/281.07. He improved to 5.11/285.53 in the opening to defeat Gary Bolger. In round two, his 5.12/284.27 beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/287. But despite running a consistent 5.13/283.37 in the semi-final, he got left on by John Force, and Force's 5.15/288 held on to win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.18/282.84 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he shut down early with problems in the first round and lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.14/163. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 there at 5.12/289.76. But he went home early again as his off-pace 5.82/240.77 fell to Bolger's 5.35/262 in the first round. Dale's best times were 5.088 at Ennis and 289.76 at Gainesville.

Notes: Tom Anderson was Jim Sickles' brother in law. On the day before the 300 mph run, the car blew up. (I still have scars on my ankle). NHRA's Dan Brickey made me go to the hospital. I came back on crutches and told Tom Anderson, let's make this thing run! The next day it went 300. I think we went some 5.02s with this car. - Freddie Neely, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com, 11/02/15 | We need to confirm the best ET for this year (and if the listed 5.093 was from a different entry or year). Notes: Hoover qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.485/246.84. Unfortunately, the car broke against Whit Bazemore in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals held near the end of February, his 5.425/239.68 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, he lost to low qualifier and eventual winner John Force, 5.12/295 to a 10-second shutoff. He had an eventful weekend at Gainesville in March. During qualifying, the car went into a wheelstand, and the body fell off the chassis. The chassis returned to the track, but the body was damaged. He mounted another one and ran 5.185/280.63 to qualify #10. After all that work, Hoover smoked the tires to 6.044/163.01 in a losing effort against Del Worsham in the first round. Seventeen fuel FCs showed up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, and Tom qualified #9 at 5.177/269.94. More problems in round one saw Hoover and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, both overpower the track and smoke the tires. When Hoover saw Kenji's tire smoke, he hammered it again, and the front end came up. The body once again flew off, landing right side up this time. When the chassis hit the pavement, it broke a Heim joint, and Hoover had no steering. He hit the wall, scraping along it for quite a short distance. Kenji won with a 10-second pass, and Tom was disqualified. The NHRA Winston Invitational saw Hoover have more of a "normal" weekend. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field and lost to low qualifier Force in the first round. NHRA Atlanta only had 16 cars show up, and qualifiers 13/16 were all over 10 seconds! Tom was #13 at 10.389/82.92. He lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.75/259 to 9.805/87.22. He qualified on the bump at NHRA Richmond with a 5.440/237.96 but lost to Force in round one, 5.040/297 to 5.962/165.68. He again benefitted from a 16-car field in Englishtown, and his 8.413/99.55 was #15. Tom lost to Al Hoffmann in round one, 5.14/297 to another abysmal run of 11.006/79.82. Only Jerry Caminito's 9.62 first alternate effort allowed Tom's 8.297/102.31 into the field in Columbus. Again, he suffered significant issues in round one and lost to Force, 5.02/304 to 10.565/84.01. Tom improved somewhat by Memphis, qualifying #10 at 5.350/256.77. He surprised Al Hoffmann in round one, 7.216/125.54 to an 8.73/87. Gremlins crept back in by round two, and Cruz Pedregon won easily, 5.24/293 to 8.932/95.79. Tom also had a solid qualifying effort at Topeka Spring, going 5.239/268.89 for #12. He beat Tim Wilkerson in round one, running 5.395/210.52 when Tim Broke. Hoffmann got to him in round two, however, 6.39/163 to Tom's troubled 13.111/72.63. Tom qualified #11 up on the mountain in Denver, going 5.369/255.39. He lost to Gary Densham in round one, 5.30/288 to 7.915/104.93. In Sonoma, Tom went 5.245/257.87 for #13 on the qualifying sheet. He actually made a representative run in round one, but his 5.551/210.72 lost to Hofmann's 5.09/305. Tom was the first alternate in Seattle at 9.266/88.98 but qualified #10 at Brainerd at 5.217/269.20. He again lost a step in round one, falling to Tony Pedregon, 5.20/297 to 6.362/146.48. At Indy, Tom qualified 15th at 5.180/285.08. He lost a close one to Tony Pedregon in round one. 5.01/306 to 5.109/283.64. Tom did not qualify for the Big Bud Shootout race within a race at Indy. He was the first alternate at Maple Grove at 5.770/188.12 but qualified #14 at Topeka Fall at 5.142/243.96. Tom lost to Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.16/301 to 10.215/84.76. At Ennis, Tom stepped up to 5.111/281.16 for the #8 spot, his best qualifying spot of the year. He kept it going in round one, too, hitting 5.098/278.29 to take out Dean Skuza's 5.23/267. His off-pace 7.983/105.93 lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.06/301 in round two. Tom wrapped up the year with a #13 qualifying spot at the Winston Finals, going 5.166/256.62. A 12.040-83.13 lost to nemesis Al Hoffman's 5.43/204 in round one. Tom was one of the most consistent funny car racers in history, with solid times nearly every year. I would love to know what happened to him in 1996. Bad clutch discs, perhaps? It was a brutal year for one of the nicest guys on the circuit. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.

Notes: Bolger started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.27/284.36. In round one, a better 5.24/284.53 fell to Dale Pulde's 5.23/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 5.33/284.27 qualified #14. In the opening round, he picked up to a 5.24/283.55 to beat Richard Hartman, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Car owner Dale Creasy installed a computer in the car for the first time at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Qualifying there wasn't much of an issue as only 16 cars showed. Still, Gary's 5.31/272.56 was the slowest of the bunch. In the opening round of eliminations, Bolger's 5.63/200.57 fell to low qualifier Al Hofmann's 5.13/295. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals held at Houston. A 5.30/283.55 qualified #15, and Gary lost to Tim Wilkerson in the first round. The team did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational event. Once again, only 16 cars showed in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A Super Stock-like time of 10.95/72.45 qualified #14 (two cars were slower!). But once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Gary Densham. Early in May, the team was at Richmond for the NHRA Virginia Nationals. A strong 5.18/278.20 qualified #9. After that, things went wrong. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.53/206.18, but that came with the engine blowing and causing the car to turn into a fireball. The body was completely destroyed. Gary was alright, but the car was done, and there was no way it could be repaired for a round-two battle against John Force. Gary didn't miss a beat and was back behind the wheel at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #12 with a 5.29/275.48. Unfortunately, he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. Bolger failed to qualify for the Big Go with a best of 5.28/287.53 but managed to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout. He lost in round one, to John Force (photo). Gary's best times of the year came in a round two loss to John Force at Topeka, 4.94/308 to 5.099/292.49. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy.

Notes: Bazemore started the '95 season at the Bakersfield Warm-up held at the end of January. He only made two passes, a 330-footer and a half-track 5.55/185.52. The following week (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.27/257.80 qualified #10, and in the first round, his 5.41/258.39 lost to Gary Clapshaw's 5.23/274. Shortly after that, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Whit qualified #9 at 5.30/282.48. Once again, he lost in round one, this time to Tony Pedregon. At the NHRA Supernationals held at Houston, he ran really well. His 5.20/287.90 qualified #9. He ran a career-best(to this point)5.11/294.11 in the opening round over K.C. Spurlock's 5.15/294. In the second round, an air line fitting that managed the fuel and clutch broke, and he slowed to 8.88/93.95 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 5.23/249. He didn't run as quick at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but he made it into the semi-final before losing to eventual winner John Force. Bazemore had "only" qualified #13 with a 5.33/296.73 but his 5.55/203.38 in the first round beat Oswald. In the second round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 5.36/269.86. Not sure if the Daytona was still in use at Gainesville, as the Daytona had been run at every event leading up to it. The Avenger was being used in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.36/264.16 qualified #12, and he improved to 5.26/291.54 to beat a fouling Kenji Okazaki. In round two, his 5.36/272.23 fell to Clapshaw's 5.20/269. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Mid-South Nationals, held at Memphis Motorsports Park in the first week of May. Bazemore was running really well in qualifying as he ran 5.18 twice. His best speed of the two passes was 292.39. Unfortunately, the car got out of shape against Jim Epler in the first round, and his 7.02/214.59 lost to Jim's 6.34/150. Whit's best times in NHRA national event competition this year were 5.102/301.30 at Ennis Fall. The car ended the year with Mobil 1 livery.

Notes: Jim showed up at Columbus driving this Cutlass rather than the Daytona-bodied car he had been running in the first half of the season. He had many problems, and his 7.84/117.89 best failed to qualify. Epler then went to Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where although he improved to 5.75/263.15, he still failed (third alternate)to qualify. He debuted a new McKinney-built Cutlass at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 5.49/241.15 qualified #5. He fell off to 5.68/215.82 in the first round in a loss to Bruce Nilsen's 5.56/257. He did not race at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, but he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.17/287.44. An easy 6.57/134.77 advanced in the first round when Gordon Mineo broke. In the second round, his 5.22/247.11 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.20/287. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. He improved to 5.23/263.85 over Paul Smith's 5.32/261 in the first round. Freddie Neely fouled against him in round two, and Jim took it easy at 7.38/117.61. In the semi-final, his 5.22/291.26 lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.19/270. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Epler qualified #6 for the Keystone Nationals with a 5.22/279.06. In round one, his 5.29 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.24. First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Kan.

Notes: Jim Epler started the '94 season by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.15/296.24. An off-pace 5.61/199.68 lost to Del Worsham's 5.08/291 in the opening round. At Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, Jim’s 5.13/288.92 qualified #5. But once again, he had first-round difficulties and his 5.61/190.47 lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.22/289.

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266.

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293.
