Notes: Hard to say whether his tiger-striped AWB LeMans coupe or the beautiful "Star Of The Circuit" GTO is the Farmer's most famous race car. The "Star" was built on a budget. Beswick didn't have the dough for a full tube chassis, so he took the stock frame from under the '64 Mystery Tornado GTO and had the Logghe Bros. add a tube front axle to it. This car has been restored and is running serious laps at nostalgia drag events. - RT | Confirmed 8.34 at Cecil County 5/18/68. | Arnie was loyal to Pontiac, and by '68, it was getting harder and harder to compete against the Mopar Hemis, SOHC Fords, and Chevy Rat motored cars. The other Pontiac standout, Don Gay, switched to Chevy motors mid-season. But there was no way Beswick would put a Chevy or any other engine in his car. He started the season with this GTO, but he changed to a Romeo Palamides built car mid-season. On February 18, he competed at the East Coast Funny Car Championships in Orlando, Florida. A first-round 9.32/163.33 beat Lee Walker's Camaro at a quicker 9.21/153. He was to face Phil Bonner in round two, but Arnie had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure. He then went to Daytona Beach for the NASCAR Winter Championships, where he finished runner-up to Bill Lawton's 8.91/169 despite running a quicker 8.88/164.53. On May 5, he was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Liberman in the first round. He ran really well at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown on May 18. A first-round 8.34/156.79 beat Malcolm Durham's quicker 8.16/180. In the semifinals, Beswick ran 8.17/174.41 but lost to Liberman's 7.92/182. Arnie was back at Aquasco on June 16 for a best-of-three-match race against Durham. The "Strip Blazer" was having all kinds of problems, and Arnie won two straight, hitting 181.63 on one run. He was in Canada for Grand Bend's Funny Car Championships on June 30. It was a four-car field, and Beswick got out of shape and shut off against Gary Dyer in his first race. In his second race, he lost to Eddie Schartman. Shortly after this, he debuted his new GTO. |

Notes: Team notes 7.99/188 best for original Secret Weapon car in a 2010 edition of Nitro Madness magazine. Did they run that time in 1969? Or did they run it in 1968? We currently have their 1958 best listed as 8.03/179 (which also needs to be verified). |

Notes: In December of '68, Norm set Irwindale's speed record to 198. Weekly qualified tenth at 8.00/205 at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car Championships and beat a crossed-up Rich Siroonian in the first round, with an 8.10/192. The Javelin failed to fire for round two. The 205 was Top Speed. By April, Weekly was driving the Mr. Norm Charger. - RH |

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, Hammons qualified with an 8.79 but lost early. He lost in the first round to Fred Goeske at the Lions Funny Car Spectacular on February 24 after qualifying #14 in the sixteen-car show with an 8.40. The following day he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, where an 8.58/165.44 in the first round, lost to Clare Sanders' 8.31/173 in the "Limefire." Rich was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on March 3. Thirty Funny Caattempteding to qualify, and Hammons' 8.41/167.91 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he fouled away an 8.62 against Ronnie Runyan in the "Blue Hell" Corvair. OCIR held a fuel altered vs. Funny Car race on June 22. There were four of each competing. Hammonds ran a career-best (to this point) 8.06 at 181.08 to beat Glenn Way's 8.83/181 in the "Groundshakers." The hood flew off the car in his second race, but he still won over Sush Matsubara, who lost a blower. He had to race another Funny Car in the third race due to all the breakage. He raced Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" car. A 8.28/183.27 defeated Kip's 8.53/179. Rich was at OCIR on July 20, where his 8.35/179.28 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15/180. |

Notes: Antique Fiberglass of Pomona made the body for this car. It was so thick and heavy that two men needed to raise it while a third put the prop rod in place. It also had a working driver's door that added to the weight. Steve started the '68 season by qualifying #15 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race with an 8.51. That alone was pretty good, considering 33 cars were trying to make the sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, he was shut down on the line in the first round with a water leak. On February 24, he raced at a sixteen-car show at Lions. An 8.01 qualified #3, and in the first round, an 8.14/180.72 advanced over Marv Eldridge. He beat a wheelstanding Cecil Yother in the second round with an 8.04/178.21. An 8.12/178.57 beat Gas Ronda's injected Mustang at 8.72/141 to move into the final against Fred Goeske. Once again, gremlins stepped in, and a blown transmission cost him any shot at victory in the final. He raced at Carlsbad the next day (February 25) for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.89/182 in the first round, with an 8.32/170.77. Thirty cars showed for another sixteen-car show at Irwindale on March 3. Steve qualified #5 with an 8.17/178.92. He had a close first-round win over the New Breed, running an 8.26 to an 8.29. In the second round, Charlie Allen fouled away an 8.05/161.29, giving Bovan's 8.27/175.09 an easy win. Bovan then got around Liberman in the semis, putting him in the final against Don Nicholson. The track had a curfew, and the final race between the two was never run, so they split the purse. Steve was at OCIR on May 11 for a best of three match against Allen. Bovan lost their first race with an 8.27/173.74 that fell to Charlie's 7.94/158. But Steve was good on the lights, and in the second race, his slower 8.11/177.51 beat the Dart's quicker 8.06/181. He did it again in the third race, where his 8.11/173.41 once again beat Allen's slightly quicker 8.10/181 for the match race victory. Steve had then jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place (see separate entry). | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT |

Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. Gervase's brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. Gervase drove an A/FX Chevelle that became his first funny car. The O'Neill Brothers next built this "King Rat" Corvette that raced until 1970. |

Notes: Adolph was at OCIR near the end of March for its final All-Pro race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he failed to qualify. He got in as an alternate, and his 8.03/177.16 beat Vic Morse in round one. In the second round, the car lost reverse after he did his burnout. Eventual winner Dave Beebe soloed for the win. Jim was back at OCIR for an eight-car show on April 18. He failed to qualify but got into the show when another car broke. The Firebird came to the line ailing in the first round, and could only run 15.25 in a loss to Beebe's 7.50. He was back at OCIR on May 2 for the Big Four Championships. In the first round, he broke and advanced Mike Van Sant. |

Notes: The All-Ford FCs were in trouble in '70. After having an amazing season in '69 that saw the blue oval guys in a lot of victory circles, there were really only 5 or 6 truly competitive Ford powered Funny Car's running in '69, but if you considered their victories it seemed like a whole lot more. Especially with Danny Ongais' domination in the early part of the year with Mickey Thompson's Mustang. All the cars that performed well-used the 427 SOHC. The Boss 429 just didn't cut it even though Tommy Grove and Connie Kalitta tried hard to make it work. But '70 started bad. There were some expected leavers, such as Eddie Schartman and Dick Loehr going into the Pro Stock class, but then there were some unexpected ones, such as Gas Ronda's bad fire at the AHRA Winternationals that cut his career short. Then there was Mickey Thompson losing two cars to crashes and now the Ford-powered Funny Car was almost extinct. It was too bad as the SOHC made gobs of horsepower, but by '70, parts were getting harder and harder to come by. Not to mention, the Fords were much more expensive to build compared to a Mopar Hemi which in '70 was an over the counter deal. The Ford had a weaker bottom end and tear downs between rounds were a lot more time-consuming. The M/T team just switched in a new "bullet" every time they hurt one. The Fords were performing better than the Chevy-powered FCs at this time. Even at Irwindale's New Year's race, there were four Ford entries and one went on to win. But just a couple of months later, only one of those four cars were still in competition. It went on with Grove winning the AHRA Winternationals. So, the season started well. What does this have to do with Larry Fullerton? Lots, as Larry had been racing a Cammer powered Mustang. It never really rocked the world. During the '69 season, he did OK, just making the shows and sometimes lasting a few rounds. If the motor got hurt, he didn't have the budget to just drop in a "spare.” During May of that year, he dropped in Norm Cowdrey's 392 for a race at Lions. His times did not really improve much (7.80 best), but the reliability was there and he won the race. He continued to race the 392 until it blew up at Lions and turned the car into a fireball. This shelved the car until July. Once it was back together, he switched back and forth between the Hemi and the SOHC. He took a stint driving one of M/T's Mustangs early in '70. Then he had this new Maverick built. Galpin Ford was a sponsor for the car and the car appeared in magazines using the Ford motor. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he failed to make the show. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the car showed up running a 392. He made a few test runs, but did not race it in competition. Fullerton did race it at OCIR's Big Four Championships, but the car failed to fire in the first round, against Ray Alley. Even with the Chrysler now in place of the Ford, Larry was having a tough time qualifying at the shows. He failed to qualify at Lions for the AHRA All American race, but with so many cars present, they formed another second eight to race. Unfortunately, Fullerton crossed the centerline in his first-round race and was disqualified. A week later (July 17), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #10 with an 8.35/141.28, but an opening round 8.03 lost to Leroy Hales' 7.80 in the "Wild Breed.” Larry continued to have trouble at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships where the car died on the line in the first round, against Frank Rupert. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. So that spelled the end for another one of the Ford powered cars. Larry wanted to run the SOHC in this car, but it was too costly and it was just too easy to put in a Hemi and just go. |

Notes: Blown fuel, late hemi, direct drive dragster-style funny. 200" chassis with an 18' long Dart roadster body draped over it. Driver Emery Cook sat in the trunk, slingshot-style. Constructed by Garlits after the rear-engine Dart Charger he purchased from Dick Branstner (later renamed, repainted the Polka Dart, later yet renamed and repainted one final time as Garlits Dart) was destroyed in a crash at Detroit. This "funnier-than-most" car became the first ultra-stock to crack the 200-mph barrier with an 8.03/200.44 blast at St. Petersburg, Fla., in mid-October '66. - RT | This car was supposed to have run 7.92 in September and 192.30 at Cordova. But I have never been able to confirm the 7.92 - Bret Kepner, 7.23 |

Notes: Al Vanderwoude did not follow the status quo when it came to drag racing. The beautiful "Flying Dutchman" '66 Dart was as normal a car as Vanderwoude ever raced. The Vanderwoudes were regular racers in the early California funny car wars, but the Ted Brown built Dart was Al's first competitive rig. The car served as a rolling catalog for Mickey Thompson parts - everything Mickey Thompson offered was on the car. The Dart sported one of those Scott Slots, an injector sold only by Mickey Thompson. Of note is that "Scott" quit making these units in 1964 or so, venturing into the world of weapons development. There was more money in missiles and bombs than in racing. Vanderwoude beat a few of the heavy hitters in match races and did OK at some of the bigger open shows. A 1957 392 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 422 cubic inches powered the car. Although not a big winner Al was popular with race fans. He ran 8.04 at 184 in the Dart in 1967. The was often a handful - Vanderwoude had severe handling problems at the Super Stock Nationals at Cecil County, MD, and at the Texas vs. California match race at Amarillo, TX. After barely a year of competition, the Dart was replaced by a new '68 Charger. Ran 9.11/168.85 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki) | Al failed to qualify at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car race, but he ran well enough to just make the show (#8) at Fontana on Jan 7. That was good considering that 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight spots. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Don Nicholson. He made it into for final of the 2400 lb Funny Car class at Bakersfield, but once again the car got out of shape and Doug Cook took the win. He was at Irwindale on March 5 for a 10 car show, but a first-round 9.02/159.28 lost to eventual winner Charlie Allen's 8.72/162. Al faced off against Roger Wolford in the "Secret Weapon" Jeep for a best two out of three match race at Tucson on April 8. He won the first race with a 9.4 run when Roger failed to stage the Jeep properly. Wolford came back to win the second race with an 8.64/178, but Al won the match when the Jeep's rear end gave up and Vanderwoude won the last race with a 9.21. At the first annual Supercharged Showdown at Lakeland on April 30, Al beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.19/163.54. He fouled away an 8.90/166.50 in the second round and lost to Don Sappington's 8.97/170. |

Notes: Snow was at Green Valley Raceway on February 18 for a best of three match race against Don Gay's Pontiac. Gene's Dart broke in the first race, and Gay's GTO broke in the second. Gene won the final race with an 8.87 to win the match. Gene was in the Dart on June 22 for a match race at Austin, Texas against Gay. Don had a rod let go in their first race, and he was out of competition. At the same time, Ron Leslie also had a match race there against Mike Burkhart. Mike lost his trans in the first race, so Snow and Leslie became a match. In the first race, Leslie won with an 8.12/181 when Gene fouled away an 8.23/174.75. In the second race, an 8.04/178.21 lost to the quicker-leaving Leslie at 8.07/177. The following day (June 23), Snow was at Amarillo for a best of three against Kelly Chadwick. The Camaro's transmission failed in the first two races, and Snow won easily. The roles reversed in the last race as Gene's transmission blew. He then went to Oklahoma City for its Funny Car Championships on July 4. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 8.16/184.07 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.30/175. He lost to Mike Burkhart in the semifinal. | Scary first blown fuel car. Was the 7.65 at San Antonio in the Dart or Charger? - Danny White |

Notes: Marv was at Irwindale on January 1 for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #9 with an 8.40, but in round one, he fouled against low qualifier Terry Hedrick in the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair. On January 14, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. An 8.27/173.41 qualified #6. In the first round, he narrowly lost to Gas Ronda's 8.19/174 with a quicker 8.18/176.81. AHRA broke its Winternationals into two parts for '68. The dragsters ran at Beeline on January 21 while the Funny Cars ran at Lions on the 28th. Eldridge qualified #4 for the 32 car field at Lions with an 8.04/175.78. An 8.15 in the first round, beat Paula Murphy's 8.74, but in round two his 8.08/174.53 lost to the meet's eventual winner Jim Liberman, at 7.75/184. Don Nicholson beat him in the first round, at the second annual Stardust Open. On February 24, over 50 Funny Cars showed up at Lions for its Funny Car Spectacular event. Eldridge qualified his Corvette #12 in the sixteen-car field with an 8.40. Unfortunately, in round one, he had problems and shut down against Steve Bovan. The next day he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships where he lost in the first round, to Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Charger. There were still lots of cars (30) attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Irwindale on March 3. Marv ran 8.33/173.74 to qualify #11. In the first round the Corvette lost fire on the line giving Liberman a solo into round two. |

Notes: Wendell Shipman was at Lions on June 29 for an Funny Car show. He was running a blown engine for the first time as he had Frank Pedregon's engine in the car. It seemed to work pretty well, as, in the first round, his 8.04 (Low ET) at 173.41 beat Marv Eldridge by more than a second. In the semifinal, he soloed with an 8.70/160.14 when Steve Bovan had transmission problems with Nelson Carter's Charger. He faced Gene Conway's Jeep in the final, and Conway lost a blower belt on his burnout, so Shipman got to make an easy single for the win. |
