Notes: Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. Ken raced at Seattle on April 27, when they pitted four FC's against four AA/GD's. Ken's 8.81/176.41 lost his first race to Dave Grassi's 7.53/198.76. A much improved 8.10/180.80 beat Don Cope's dragster in his second race. On August 10, he ran at the Woodburn Funny Car Festival. A first-round 8.61/174.08 beat Warren Gunter's bug, but an 8.06 by Gas Ronda in the semifinal put him on the trailer. |

Notes: Runyan started the year by qualifying seventh with an 8.34 in Irwindale's sixteen-car field New Year's day meet. He singled in round one when Steve Bovan was shut down on the line with a water leak. He failed to make it into the finals. On January 14, he showed up at OCIR for an eight-car show where he qualified fourth with an 8.24/173.07. In the first round, Clare Sanders's 8.19/170 beat Ron's 8.34/171.10. At the AHRA Winter Meet at Lions on January 28, Runyan qualified ninth with an 8.35/173.70 in a 32-car field. He made it into round three before Don Nicholson's 8.02/169 beat him. Still, at Lions on February 24, an 8.34 qualified Ron tenth in the sixteen-car field. He lost in the first round to Bob Sullivan's 8.01/189. Thirty funny cars showed up at Irwindale on March 3 for a sixteen-car show, and Runyan's 8.27/171.10 qualified eighth. A first-round 8.36 beat Rich Hammons, who fouled (8.62). He advanced past a motor blowing Bob Sullivan in round two, but a 7.88/182 by Nicholson stopped his ailing Corvair in the semis. He was back at OCIR on April 13 for a big 20-car show, but while warming the engine up in the pits, he had a cylinder wall collapse. He was unable to run in eliminations. Irwindale held an eight-car show on April 28, where Runyan's 8.48/170.77 in the opening round fell to Fred Goeske's 8.27. Ronnie came back out later for a consolation race against Charlie Allen, and he beat the Dart with an 8.53. He was at Capitol Raceway on July 13 for its Supercharged Invitational event. He was serving as a backup car if needed, and while he wasn't required for the show, he did make an 8.30 check-out pass. Late in the year, the little Corvair started putting down some numbers. On November 16, at Lions Funny Car Championships, a first-round 8.08/170 showed he was on the right track even though it was a losing run again Jack Chrisman's 7.88/185. A big win came on November 30 at Lions over an eight-car field. He qualified with an 8.18 and beat Clyde Morgan in the first round, with an 8.33/173.74. He improved to an 8.07/155 in the semifinals to beat a wheelstanding Eddie Pauling, and in the final, an 8.11/175.78 got the victory over Dale Armstrong driving Gary Crane's Javelin. At the Drag Racing Magazine Meet at Sacramento, he qualified eleventh but lost to Randy Walls' 8.29/175 in the first round, with an off pace 8.67/167. The first OCIR All-Pro race of 1969 was run on December 29/1968. Runyan showed but was unable to qualify. Ronnie ran 8.25 at 169.81 at Bristol's 1968 All-American Funny Car Championships. Fremont newspaper in March 1968 listed the car as a "175 mph Camaro." |

Notes: Rusty failed to qualify for an eight-car show at OCIR on January 14, but he got in when Tom Sturm's Corvair had motor damage while qualifying and couldn't run. Delling was the first alternate, but his first-round 9.36/107.39 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.85/183. On January 28, the team went to Lions for the AHRA Winter Funny Car meet. A 9.39 qualified, but they lost early. At Lions on February 24, an 8.41 qualified sixteenth and a first-round 8.08/181.44 defeated Gene Conway's 8.13/176.81. An 8.44/170.45 advanced over Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro in round two. In the semifinal, he lost a motor and the race to Fred Goeske's 8.98. He qualified in the unlucky #13 spot at Irwindale on March 3 but lost a close one in the first round, when his 8.29 lost to Steve Bovan's 8.26. He grabbed a big win at Fremont on March 17 for the West Coast Championships. A final round 8.22/177.16 stopped Conway for the money. Rusty was at Lions on March 30, where all cars ran three races. He won his first race over Gene Conway's new Firebird with an 8.37/172.74. In his second race, Conway beat his 8.45/170.45 with an 8.18/173. In his third race, Delling ran a consistent 8.39/171.42 to beat the Fisher-Greth car. He was back at OCIR on April 13 when 22 cars ran the first round, and the eight lowest ET's advanced into round two. Rusty ran an off pace 8.94/171.75 that lost to Hayden Proffitt's Rebel at 8.51/168. His ET failed to advance into the second round. Lions held an eight-car show on May 18 and the "New Breed" qualified #3 with an 8.52/166.85. He picked up to an 8.33/158.85 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Dale Williams' 8.17/173 in Jess Tyree's Firebird. A sixteen-car show was run at Irwindale on June 22, and Rusty lasted until round two. In the first round, Andy Clary broke on the line, and Delling advanced with an 8.38/172.41, but in round two, his 8.39/172.08 lost to Gas Ronda's Mustang at 8.07/175. Six FC's ran at Las Vegas on July 27 and the "New Breed" was there. Dellings' 8.33 defeated Steve Bovan's 8.59 in the "Super Chief in the opening round." Rusty had problems in the semifinal, and his 14.35 at 150.00 lost to Kip Brundage's 8.58/169 in the "Parts Mart" Camaro. Kip lost his engine on the pass, so Delling was reinstated for the final against Gordon Mineo. But his off-pace 9.06/165.44 finished runner-up to Mineo's 8.55/146. On August 10, he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Jack Chrisman's Comet broke in the opening round, so the "New Breed" advanced with an 8.33/176.12. In the second round, his 8.19/178.57 beat Wendell Shipman's 8.29/185. In the semifinal, he slowed to 8.48/178.92, which lost to Conway's 8.29/171 Jeep. On September 29, Delling was one of 35 Funny Car drivers that showed up at Lions for an eight-car show. All the cars ran a qualifying round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing into the eight-car field. Delling qualified for the field, but he lost to Dick Bourgeois in the first round. Also ran 8.22 at Fremont. Did Pete Everett own this car? Rusty also drove this car at the 1968 OCIR Mfg. Championships. |

Notes: 427 Chevy, B&M Turbo Hydro combo. 2000-lb. car on 118" Exhibition Engineering frame. The wheelbase was stretched 10 inches. The car was all-glass but not a flip-top. The front end was removed for access to the engine. (Name of entry is accurate. Camaro's name was misspelled on the car door, although a late-season repaint corrected that error.) Car was the subject of features in 8/67 Drag Strip and 2/68 SS&DI. - RT | Confirmed 8.82 at Salem, OH, and 167.28 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. | Sappington had a really bad weekend in May at Detroit during the running of the AHRA Grandnationals. He spun out on Friday, and on Saturday, a fuel line came loose, and the fuel caught fire. Quick thinking on Don's part got the fire to go out when he shut the fuel off. After getting the car stopped, he found the transmission had locked up. He stayed up all night fixing it for Sunday. On Sunday, he beat Al Fontanini and Jay Howell before meeting Jim Thornton, who drove the "Ramchargers" Dart in the semifinals. Jim got out on Don, but Don kept his foot in it for the fans. Unfortunately, the Camaro burst into flames a thousand feet into the run. His torque converter had blown out through the transmission shield, roll bar, roof, and windshield. How it had missed Sappington was a miracle. It had sliced through the 4" roll bar like it was nothing. Still, Don received second-degree burns. New England held a twelve-car show on September 17. Sappington's Camaro broke in the first round against Clare Sanders. At the Western US Super Stock Championships at Beeline on December 3, Don lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in the first round. Don raced at OCIR's final race of '67 on December 17. It was an eight-car field, and Sappington qualified on the "bump" with an 8.22. Unfortunately, he lost early. |

Notes: In the Fall of 1971, photojournalist Jon Asher made initial runs at Orange County International Raceway in an attempt to obtain his NHRA fuel funny car license. At OCIR, he made a couple of half-track shots and a pair of timed runs an 8.71/175.78 and an 8.09/183.29. More runs would need to be made, and plans for attempts in California in early 1972 were tentatively set. The California runs never materialized, and it was decided to make the passes in March at Gainesville Raceway after the completion of the Gatornationals. Jon made three runs at Gainesville, an abbreviated run where Jon's fire boot got caught under the throttle pedal, a good straight as a string pass of 7.47/192.70, and an engine exploding, on fire pass of 8.92/82.94. Fuel funny car drivers Gary Henderson (Super Duster) and Cecil Lankford (Brand-X), along with track manager Terry Earwood signed for Jon's license. Jon also agreed that before he made any runs in competition, he would make some additional passes to get within the NHRA required National Record plus ten percent rule, which required a new licensee to make a full pass within ten percent of the current National Record. Two different articles about Jon's experiences were published in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, "Update: Driving A Funny Car" March 1972 and "It's On Fire" July 1972. |

Notes: This appears to be a wholly different Firebird than was raced by Conway a year earlier. Stretched flip-top body vs the old two-piece stock-wheelbase lift-off, round-tube frame vs old rectangular-tube, etc. Any idea whether this was purpose-built by Conway or purchased from another racer? - RT |

Notes: Late hemi, TorqueFlite combo. This car, with an early hemi, was originally built and raced by Brad Anderson of Colorado. A feature on the Dart in the 11/70 issue of Rodder & Super/Stock said Bush sometimes ran fuel so was able to race as a Gasser or fuel funny car. - RT | Yes, this is true. Here's a shot of him racing Kalitta at Sears Point. These stat upgrades are from that race, late in 1969. - DD |

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won many races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966. The car began with a top, but it was cut off after the car wanted to lift at speeds. Proffitt got the car to run 8.49. In 1967, Hayden took over the Grant Industries Rebel SST funny car program. Proffitt hired famed Amos Satterlee to tune the large 439 C. I. AMC engine. The problems that original bunch had with the Rebel continued with Proffitt. The red car ran 8.11 at 180.85 before being retired at the end of 1967. In 1968, Hayden put the AMC Rebel body on an unused Logghe Stage II chassis he had. By the end of 1968, AMC dropped out of funny car racing and Proffitt retired from racing for a few years. Hayden returned to racing with a rocket dragster driven by his son Brad. Proffitt later drove the "Hot Streak" jet dragster. |

Notes: The car featured a 1971 Logghe chassis and was the original Phil Castronovo World Championship machine. It later went from Nichols & Oxner to Fred Forkner to Lew Arrington to Tom Stephens and Rick Stambaugh! | "I bought the car, and Rick Stambaugh put his drivetrain into it. It was a steel 392 with a pedal clutch on nitro - the last one East of the Mississippi at the time! We beat Jungle Jim in our first race at a 32 car show when Liberman broke. I then nearly put it up on the side panels on the burnout in the next round, clipping the Christmas Tree but not taking it out. Tommy Ivo came burning out past me as I sat on the track. We launched for the race and blew the blower and shattered the windshield to give Ivo the win. We were two guys racing a fuel funny car with ZERO money!" - Tom Stephens, Draglist LIVE, 8/16/21 |

Notes: Modlin was only driving Gene Conway's Firebird for the second time when he pulled into Lions on June 29. The race at Lions featured two eight-car fields as the cars that failed to qualify were bunched into a second field of eight. Gene failed to qualify for the quick eight, so he ran the second group. In the first round, his 8.12/174.75 beat the "Samson." An easy 9.36/129.12 defeated Larry Fullerton's Mustang in the semifinal. In the final, he faced the "Vicious Too" driven by Dale Pulde. Pulde was running steady 8.2's in eliminations, but he fell off to 8.44/153 in the final, but it was still enough to cover Gene's 9.26/150.00 runner-up effort. He was at Irwindale on July 3 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Marv Eldridge in the opening round. He came back out for a couple of consolation races and ran really well. His 8.46/173.41 beat a crossed-up Jess Tyree in the first one, and in the second race, an 8.24/176.81 beat Steve Bovan. |
