Notes: 427 Chev, B&M TurboHydro combo. 2000-lb. car on 118" exhibition Engineering frame. Wheelbase stretched 10 inches. The car was all-glass but not a flip-top. front end removed for access to the engine. (Photos show a repaint late in '67 corrected the mis-spelling of "Camaro" on the doors. The photo here is from early '67. - RT | Don raced at the Funny Car Team Championships at OCIR on May 4, but he shut down in the first round and lost to Charlie Allen. A huge transmission explosion at Detroit Dragway damaged the asphalt and seemed to have ended Sappington's desire for racing. - NH | This is a photo of the car in 1967. In 1968, it had a more "candid" paint job. - Danny White |

Notes: Eddie Pauling's new Cougar for '69 used a chassis built by Bill Brawner and himself. Bill built the 392 Hemi that was bored out slightly to 396. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as an Isky cam. Mondello reworked the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. There was no transmission as the car was direct drive with a Hays triple disc clutch. The rear end was a '57 Olds with 3.90 gears. |

Notes: By the time Larry Reyes began driving the "Hawaiian" in 1969, he was a true funny car standout. Reyes had driven the "Super Cuda" Barracuda, the "King Fish" Barracuda, Larry Coleman's Coronet, Phil Bonner's "Daddy Warbucks, " and his own Barracuda. Reyes became the first of many funny car drivers for Roland Leong, who jumped on the funny car bandwagon after having success in dragsters with such drivers as Don Prudhomme, Mike Snively, Mike Sorokin, and Danny Ongais. Leong had a Logghe-built Stage II chassis with a full-size Ron Pellegrini-built Charger body, and Keith Black built the engine. Larry qualified on the bump spot at 8.331/180.72 at Pomona. Larry won his first-round race against Mike Hamby, 8.14/181.45 to 8.58/167, but the car literally flew and crashed, signaling the end of the full-size funny car. Leong debuted a new mini Charger shortly after that. The new "Hawaiian" won all three races it entered the first weekend with Reyes driving. Reyes drove the car to a reported best of 7.35 at 208.31 by the end of 1969. Larry left Leong and later drove for Candies and Hughes, Prock and Howell, and the last "Super Cuda." Reyes suffered an accident at the wheel of the "Super Cuda" that left him in a wheelchair. Larry returned to race 20 years later in Super Gas. Leong went on to race and tune funny cars for the next 25 years with a seemingly endless list of drivers. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from James Ibusuki) |

Notes: Lindamood's '66 car had weighed 2,500 lbs. His '66 car still used a steel body, while this new Charger used a fiberglass body to help lighten the load. Another difference was how far back the engine now sat in the chassis. The old car had the engine moved back 12 inches, while his new car had it sitting back 24" for better weight transfer. Roger was at Fontana on January 7 for an eight-car show. While he and 34 others failed to qualify, he still got Top Speed of the meet with a 182.18. He was at Detroit Dragway on March 12 for a best-of-three-match race against Hubert Platt's Mustang. It was not a good outing for Lindamood as he lost two straight. On May 10, Lindamood split the winnings with Dave Strickler at the Cecil County Factory Showdown. He had beaten Bill Lawton in the first round with an 8.70/166.35. In round two, an 8.41 beat Jack Chrisman's quicker 8.32, but this was the race that had Arnie Beswick's car roll through the guardrail and catch fire in the first round, and in round two, Don Nicholson's Comet had gotten airborne, and the body ripped from the frame. The chassis with Don along for the ride ended up in a marsh that ran alongside the track. Don and Arnie were both OK, but it was too late (12:45) to run the final round due to the lengthy cleanups, and Strickler and Lindamood split the purse. Roger was at Aquasco for a ten-car show on May 21. In the first round, he fouled away an 8.78/167.91 against Chrisman's 8.72/155. Roger was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, on May 28 for the UDRA Championships. This race ran only fuel-burning injected cars. Lindamood set Low ET at 8.33, but he lost after winning his first round with an 8.76/166.97. He ran well at an eight-car show at Martin, Mich on July 1. He fouled away an 8.56/167 in the first round against Lew Arrington's "Brutus," but the Pontiac crossed the centerline, and Roger was back in the show. He beat a somehow reinstated "Brutus" again in the semifinals to apparently make the final against "Dyno" Don. But rain interrupted the proceedings, and due to his Low ET (8.15), Nicholson was awarded the win. On July 9, Roger ran a best two out of three at Salem against Kelly Chadwick. The Charger won two straight with times of 8.83/172 and 8.84/169. Roger won the UDRA race at Alton on July 19, where he also set Low ET at 8.26. Shortly after that (July 22), he was at Cecil for a four-car show. He cut a great light in the first race, and his 8.19/172.41 beat "Fast Eddie" Schartman's 8.09/170. In his second race, Nicholson gated him, and his 8.15/176.81 lost to "Dyno's" slower 8.18/171. There were no other races run. Roger also won the UDRA Circuit race at New York Nationals. He was running 8.2's at 173 and defeated Pete Gates' Comet in the final. We listed initially at 8.34/178.57. We replaced those times with OCIR Mfg. Meet times of 8.15/184.42 at OCIR on 11/25/67. Was it the same car? Jay Howell frame, late hemi, TorqueFlite. The car was advertised for sale in very early '67. Was it still injected or blown at this point? It would determine A/XS or S/XS. The motor was set back 18 inches, so he sat beside the engine. Also had a push-button selector mounted by the seat for the Torqueflite transmission. It also had a VW front Axle. It was powered by a fuel-injected 427 Chevy and a Chrysler 8.75 rear end. |

Notes: Bovan's new Camaro was based on a 128" Mike Hoag-built chassis. It used a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. A Torqueflite trans transferred the power back from the 427 Chevy. The engine used a Crankshaft Company Crank with stock cubic inches.ForgeTrue pistons sat on M/T rods. Mondello did the heads, and an Isky cam was used. The top of the engine featured a Don Hampton-built GMC 6/71 blower that was overdriven 24% and was fed via an Enderle injection. Cragar supplied the blower drive. On March 19, Steven qualified #1 for an eight-car field at Carlsbad. Fifteen cars were attempting to make the show, and his 8.46/172 got him the pole. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Steve was at Cecil County on June 17 for a best of three match against Paula Murphy. Paula won their first race with an 8.86/160, but Steve came back to win the next two and the match. In their second race, his 8.90/157.61 beat the Mustang's 9.08/139. Bovan cut a great light in the deciding race, and his 8.96/157 held on to win over Murphy's quicker 8.91. - RH | Also ran 9.05 at 175.78 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. - Danny White | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. He was featured in the 9/67 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. - RT | Bovan's '67 bests were 8.15/180.10. - BP |

Notes: John Albright constructed the tubular chassis. The car originally used a steel body in '65, but for '66, a fiberglass body with working doors was used. Reyes was at LaPlace for a best of five match against Leonard Hughes early in the season. Larry won three straight and reset the track record with an 8.97/162.74. In April, Reyes was at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race against Don Gay. He set a 9.02 track record in the first race, but he wasted it with a foul start, giving Gay the win. To make matters worse, he also lost the second race, giving the match to Gay. The two had a rematch on May 1 at Aquasco. Once again, Reyes had problems when he lost a rear end in the first round. In the second race, he ran a 9.48/149.75 that lost to Don's 9.32/152. That gave Don the match race win. It was a while later, but on July 23, Reyes could take one back at Houston. He was racing Roy Gay, and in the first race, Larry's 9.61/146.81 beat a crossed-up Roy. The Pontiac's transmission let go in the second race, and Reyes took the match with a 9.55/140. Early in July, he was at Old Dominion Speedway for a best of three against Bobby Woods blown Chevelle. Woods surprised him in their first race, where the Chevy won with a 6.22. But Reyes came back to win the next two races and the match with a 5.92 best. Larry had an 8.16 best for '66. |

Notes: Ron was at Gary, Indiana, for the AHRA Mid-West Nationals on August 11. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.95/155.39 advanced when Dick Loehr lost fire. In the semifinals, he needed only an 8.55/179.21 to advance when Huston Platt fouled. Unfortunately, his good luck ended in the final, where he lost to Dick Harrell. A couple of days later (August 13), he was at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet race. Here, he had no luck as he blew a transmission in his race against Mel Perry in the first round. |

Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his opening round race against Charlie Allen. On August 10, he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. An 8.19/174.75 in the opening round beat Gordon Mineo. He beat Gas Ronda's ailing Mustang in round two with an 8.23/170.13. Dave Beebe blew his transmission in the semifinal, and Williams advanced with an 8.34/159.01. He went up against the Jeep of Gene Conway in the final, and his 8.35/165.13 finished runner-up. |

Notes: Conway raced this car briefly while transitioning from the Destroyer jeep to a couple of very successful Corvette floppers. This was the former Mark Bullet "Bloomin Bullet" funny with a glass Firebird clip replacing the original Camaro tilt front. Conway replaced the Bullet's blown Chevy with his preferred early hemi, backed by a TorqueFlite. Chuck Finders built the square-tube chassis. - RT | Gene was at Lions on March 30, where he made three passes in competition. The Firebird got out of shape on the first run, and he shut down against Rusty Delling. Gene really picked up on his second pass, running 8.18/173.74 to beat Delling's 8.45/170. He won his last race with an 8.49/168.35. On April 28, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. An opening round 8.76 beat Delling's tire-smoking 9.01, but in the semifinals, he lost fire against Fred Goeske. He was still driving the Firebird on May 4 at the OCIR Funny Car Championships. Gene was part of the Pontiac team, but he failed to reach the finals. He was back at Lions on May 18, and he could not qualify for the eight-car field. They decided to run two full eight-car fields since so many FC's showed. Conway's 9.89 qualified on the "bump" for the second eight. A 7-cylinder 10.06/105 in the first round, lost to Larry Barker's 8.84/175. He then went to OCIR for a fuel altered vs. funny car race. The Firebird was still not running up to par. An ailing 11.15/76.98 lost to Gary Reed's 8.14/157 in the first round, but a 9.14/168.85 in round two beat Sush Matsubara. In round three, he improved to 8.43/172.08 to beat Randy Bradford. |

Notes: AA/GS convert used 25% nitro loads. On March 21, Manuel fed nitro to John Lombardo's Corvette to run in OCIR's Corvette FC Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 9.19/149.75 won when Don Cook crossed the centerline. He improved by over a second to 8.18/175.09 in the semi-final, but it wasn't enough to beat Gene Conway's 7.63/181. |

Notes: First Jungle Jim Funny Car was a steel body that ran off the end of Fremont. 2220 lbs. 110" box tube AWB. Liberman started 1966 in "Hercules" Chevy II, then teamed with Lew Arrington on "Brutus" GTO, then debuted this Chevy II late in 1966. These stats are on fuel, but ran alky in car to begin with. August 1970 Car Craft interview says car ran a best of 8.19/182 in 1966, but that sounds more like 1967. I've found an 8.48/169.54. End of year for sale ad claims 8.19/177.86 best, so that is the winning combo until further info is found. | Jim Liberman was only 21 when he built this car, but he already had years of experience with these types of cars. He only took six weeks to build this Nova. A stock-sized 427 Chevy powered the car. M/T rods held Venolia pistons and the cam came from Crower. The heads were modified by Mondello. A Hilborn injector sat on top of the GMC 6/71. The rest of the driveline consisted of a TorqueFlite transmission and an Olds 3.90 rear end. Jim did all his own work including the aluminum for the interior. The second run ever on the car came at Lions where he ran 8.83/161.77 on 25%. That was really flying at that time, even more so for a Chevy when the Mopars and Fords were dominating. |

Notes: 121" wheelbase car retained stock unitized steel body; with glass front end weighed a portly 2400 lbs. Four-page feature in Feb/March '68 Drag Parts Illustrated. - RT | Confirmed 8.63/168.22 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet 11/25/67. | Joe Pisano wanted to build a Camaro Funny Car after watching the crowd reaction to the class at the '66 NHRA Nationals. The Camaro had just been released and there were no fiberglass bodies yet being made. So, Joe and his brother Frank bought a brand new six-cylinder Camaro and drove it back to Doug Kruse Engineering. The factory fresh car was stripped down to begin its new life as a drag racer. Kruse then built a custom chassis that had the rear wheels moved forward 9" from their stock location. The one-piece fiberglass front end had 22" added to its length. That and the trunk lid were provided by Fiberglass Trends. The rest of the body including the doors was still factory steel. Pisano's engine experience was with the early Chrysler Hemi. This was his first Chevy "Rat" motor. It was a stock sized 427 that used a Reath crank. Howards rods were used along with 7:1 Venolia pistons. Howards also supplied the cam. Mondello reworked the cylinder heads. A four-port Hilborn Injection unit sat on top a Don Hampton blower. A Mopar rear end with 3.90 gears was used. Weight on the car was 2,440 and early runs saw Frank hit 8.23/174.84. Frank ran 8.23/167.59 at Lions on August 12. |

Notes: Lunati was at Connecticut in May for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. He lost the match but did make a good showing. He was back in Connecticut on June 11 for a best of three match race against the "Ramchargers." Lunati held the track speed record going into this match at 170.45. The report did not mention who was driving the Dart as both Jim Thornton and Mike Buckel were both behind the wheel at various times during the year. The week after this match, Jim was driving. In their first race, Joe's 8.56/159.01 beat the "Rams" 8.80/166. But in the next two races, the Dart was able to beat the Camaro and win the match while resetting both the ET and speed record at 8.42/174. Lunati was runner-up to Doug Thorley in Funny Car Eliminator at the '67 NHRA Nationals. Turned 8.200/179.28 to the winner's 7.83/192.30. - RT |
