Notes: Jess Tyree's new Firebird used a 120" wheelbase chassis built by Leiby and Tyree. The engine was a '63 Pontiac 421 Super Duty. It used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. The cam was from Sig Erson. The Hilborn pump pushed the 20% nitro mix into the GMC 6/71 blower. The power was transmitted to the Pontiac rear end with 3.90 gears by a Turbo-Hydro from B&M. The car weighed 1,970 lbs. The car was featured in Drag Parts Illustrated and, at the time of the article, was said to have run a best of 8.32/169.70. | On September 9, Tyree was at OCIR for a best of three match race against Frank Pisano. In their first race, the Firebird caught fire on the line, and Jess had to shut it down while Frank soloed for the win. The fire was minor, and the car was ready for its second race. In that race, Tyree's 8.99 beat Pisano's 9.59. In the deciding match, Tyree fouled away an 8.83 while Pisano claimed the match race victory with a 9.44. He was back at OCIR on September 30 for a match race against Fred Goeske and his "Hemi-'Cuda." The Firebird failed to fire, so Goeske won by default, making solo passes. Jess had a bad day on November 4 with this car in Tucson, Arizona. During qualifying for a race, the Firebird went up in flames. He was seriously burned. | Confirmed 8.82 at Carlsbad CA 1967. Notes: Armstrong followed the path least traveled by relying on a strong-running 352" small block Chevy for power. He claimed to never deviate from a diet of 20 percent nitro (in alky). The combo was good enough to set low qualifying time (8.33) for funnies at the AHRA Championship at Lions in late July 1966. - RT | Armstrong ran this car three different ways in 1966: injected fuel, blown fuel coupe, and blown fuel as a roadster, pictured here. This is the car he ran in 1965. In 1967, he stretched the now roofless Chevy II. In 1968, the car was run by Ron Lorenz and John Wright. - DD | On November 27, at the Lions East-West Meet, Dale put Frank Pedregon's Chrysler Hemi in the car. He ran 9.32 in the opening round to beat Eddie Marcek's Mustang, and he got out of shape in round two, where he lost to Ronnie Runyan. |

Notes: Ran late 1966/67. first as Hilborn-injected, later as blown. Notable for stock-displacement, stock crank smallblock 289 Ford. Ran fuel, backed with a C-4 auto trans. One-piece lift-off glass body and unusual aluminum frame (including rollbar) contributed to light weight. (The truck weighed in sub-1400 pounds, and Nash was quoted in late '66 as saying he was still shooting for 1200.) Still, the aluminum frame scared the NHRA/which banned this construction in 1967, ending the Bronco's career. Nash went on to earn fame for developing the very popular Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. |

Notes: The Mr. Pickett Corvette was at Lions on May 18. There were so many cars that the track formed two eight-car fields. Pickett's 9.01 was not quick enough to qualify in the low eight, but it was good enough for the #2 spot in the second eight behind Roger Wolford's 8.99 in the "C&O Destroyer" Jeep. In the opening round, Bob's 9.23/131.54 easily beat Wendell Shipman, but in the semifinal, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The Corvette was running rough when Pickett showed up at Irwindale on June 15 for a best of three match race against Rich Siroonian, driving John Mazmanian's AA/GS Austin for the last time. Bob only won one race, and that was due to Siroonian fouling. The Corvette's best time was only 9.32/145 compared to the gasser's 8.71/163 best. When Pickett showed up at Lions on July 27 for an eight-car show, the Corvette was now running topless. He ran 8.50/171.43 to qualify #5. Bob faced low qualifier, Ray Alley, in the first round, and despite running an 8.33/174.41, he lost to Alley's 8.41/158. Pickett was at OCIR on August 31. There were fourteen FC's that were to race in the first round, with only the four fastest ET's advancing into the semifinal. Bob ran 8.42/175.43 to beat Rusty Delling's Firebird, but he wasn't quick enough to qualify for the semifinal. On September 21, he was one of 35 cars competing in the first round for a spot in the eight-car field at Lions. Only the quickest eight cars would advance into round one. Bob's 8.37/166.35 defeated Garry Schwartz in the "Ratty Cat" Cougar. Pickett's time was good enough to advance, and in the first round of actual competition, his 8.37/176.12 won when Marv Eldridge's Corvette broke a rear end. Bob had an easy run in the semifinal when Dick Bourgois lost fire and Bob soloed. He faced Dee Keaton's SOHC-powered Cougar in the final, and despite Pickett running his best of the weekend, an 8.35/174.08, he finished runner-up to Keaton's 8.16/174. These eight-second times are impressive for a car in this configuration. |

Notes: Murphy was at Lions on January 28 for AHRA's second half of its Winternationals. She qualified for the 32 car field with an 8.95. In the opening round of eliminations, her improved 8.74 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15. Paula was at Lions on March 30, where she made three runs. The first pass was an 8.99/143.34 that beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in Charlie Wilson's car. Murphy lost to Al Vanderwoude's 9.07/141 in the next race when she shut off to a 9.13/146.81. Her best run was 8.89/123.79, but she lost to Bob Pickett's 8.73/165. Paula faced off against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in a best of three match race at Connecticut on July 20. Unfortunately, she lost all three races and the match, running times of 8.34/173.41, 8.43/170.45, and 8.33/172.74 against Frank's 7.99/185, 8.11/182, and 8.24/155. Notes: Comet roadster with Cammer, C-6 combo. Jack Chrisman got one of four original Logghe-built Comets in 1966. Jack took his proven blown 427 SOHC out of the Chrisman’s Comet to run in the new flip-top car, unlike Nicholson and Schartman, who ran injected Cammers. In 1966, it seemed that the four lightweight Comets dominated the funny car competition like no other cars. Car burned to the ground at New York National mid-1966. Repurchased the old Comet from Dee Keaton to finish the season. Chrisman ran a quickest-ever 8.71 and 184 mph at Riverside during the year. We need to confirm which combo ran that number. | This car would have been just at home at a car show as a race track. The Shedlik built fiberglass body weighed 200 lbs. and the whole car was just 1,870 lbs. Chrisman was experimenting with running direct-drive and C-6 automatic transmission. Jack was at Pomona on April 24 in his Comet roadster, making exhibition passes with a best of 9.06 at 171. At the end of May, he beat Emery Cook driving Don Garlits' Dart two straight at Cecil County. He ran times of 9.35/163.04 and 9.36/168 to win the match. He was still using his old '65 engine from the previous year's car, but he installed a new engine with aluminum heads shortly after. Chrisman won Funny Car at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He beat a fouling Al Vanderwoude in the first round, with an 8.72/184.42 (Top Speed). His 8.74/182.18 beat Bob Davis in the semifinals, while a final round 8.71/179.28 got the victory over Jim Liberman driving the "Brutus" car. On July 2, Jack was at Detroit in his Comet roadster to face Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" car in a best two out of three match race. Jack attempted to warm up before the match but had some problems with his supercharger. He got it straightened out in time for the first race as his 8.59/177.51 beat Dyer, who blew his transmission. Dyer could not repair his car, so Chrisman soloed to win the match, but what a solo it was. He set a new track record 8.50/178.57 for the win. On July 9, he was at Capitol for a best of three match against Dick Landy. Dick was late arriving as his truck had blown a rear end on the way to the match. So, in the first race, Hubert Platt subbed for him in his Mustang. Platt's words were, "maybe he'll foul." Chrisman didn't foul in their race, and he ran an 8.82/181.44 to beat Platt's wheelstanding 9.86/136. Landy arrived with some help in the form of Malcolm Durham's transporter. So, the two lined up for round two of the match. They were having a good race until half-track when Chrisman exploded a supercharger. Landy won with a 9.33/137. Jack was done for the day, and once again, Platt was called in to race Landy in the final race. Platt lost, so Dick was declared the winner of the match. Jack was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division One race. He set the S/XS speed record to 175.43. He was supposed to run off against Ed Schartman in the S/XS final, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Schartman soloed for the win. ET 1966 (July 1966 Car Craft) MPH Crofton MD 1966 (8/12/66 Drag News). Car Craft's "Top Ten Rods of 1966" feature credited 8.71 at 184.00 times during the year. - RT |

Notes: Arnie was at Drag City late in January for a best-of-three match race against Tom McEwen, who was driving the "Hemi-Cuda." Beswick got out on McEwen in the first race, but the Mopar drove around him to a 9.37 win over the Pontiac's 9.54. Arnie got out first in the second race as well, only to watch as McEwen came past again. Tom made it three straight over the Tempest. In March, Beswick ran 8.35 at Alman, GA, to reset Gary Dyer's 8.58 world record. Beswick was at Cordova on June 25 for a best-of-three match against Darrell Droke's blown SOHC Mustang. In their first race, Beswick's 8.90/160.42 beat Droke's 9.00/151. Darrell fouled in the second race, and Arnie won the match two straight. Arnie was at Cordova for a best-of-three match race against Larry Reyes' "Kingfish" Barracuda on October 2. In the first round, Arnie went into a wheelstand and shut down, losing to Larry's 9.09/138. In the second race, it was Larry who got out of shape and shut off, giving Beswick the win with an 8.87/163. In the third race, Beswick ran 8.83/158 to win the match when Reyes got out of shape again. |

Notes: Did both the GTO and the Tempest run 8.30s in 1966? We need to confirm the best times for both cars. | Beswick was at Aquasco on July 31 for a best-of-five match race against Bill Lawton in the "Tasca Ford" Mustang. Arnie won their first race with a 9.61/153.05, but he fouled in the second, and Lawton evened up the score. In the third race, Bill ran 8.63/158 to beat the GTO's 9.85/150.75, and in the next race, Arnie's engine soured, giving Lawton's 8.77/159 the match race win. |

Notes: Harry Schmidt and Mike Burkhart had run a Nova in '66, but for '67 they teamed up on this Camaro that they built in just three weeks. The cost was kept down to just $2,700 as they had a lot of parts on hand. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. and sat on a 120" chassis. An injected 427 Chevy powered the car that used M/T rods and 12:1 Venolia pistons. A roller cam from Crower was installed. Heads were done by Mondello. The 90% nitro was fed to the engine by Hilborn injection. The rest of the drivetrain was from Mopar, from the push-button TorqueFlite transmission back to the Plymouth rear end with 3.90 gears. Total weight was only 1,750 lbs. The car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals where Mike ran a best of 9.50 on 50% nitro. |

Notes: Kelly Chadwick's "Wild Thing II" was one of the first Camaro funny cars built. The car was delivered to Don Hardy Race cars as a body in white. Hardy converted the Camaro into a match bash funny car. The "Wild Thing II" began with an injected Chevrolet, but a blower soon went on the top of the engine. The "Wild Thing II" raced in 1967 and 1968 and was one of the last non-fliptop match bash funnies to be a serious contender. Kelly drove the car to an 8.35/169.00 known best with Steakley Chevrolet sponsorship. The "Wild Thing II" became too outdated at the end of 1968 and was replaced. It ran 8.50/167.28, 8.43/167.59, and 8.40/167.59 at the inaugural OCIR Funny Car Manufacturers Meet on 11/25/67. | In out of the first outings with the new Camaro, Chadwick faced off against Gene Snow on April 23 for a best of three match race at Amarillo. He won the first race when Snow fouled, and he lost the second race when he fouled, but in the final, he won the match by beating Snow with a track record 8.80 at 166.35. On May 7, he raced against Art Malone's new Mustang in a best of three match at Oklahoma. Malone had a bad day as Kelly won all three races with 9.52/150.75, 9.29/158.73, and 9.57/157.06 times. A week later (May 13), he was at Memphis to duke it out with Herb McCandless in the former Ramchargers Dart. It was another best of three and in the first round, Chadwick's 9.01/155.85 lost to Herb's 8.91/156. But Kelly came back to win the final two races and the match with to more 9.01's and a best speed of 156.85. Amarillo held a match race on May 21 and Kelly's Camaro was there to run Al Vanderwoude. He fouled against Al in the first race, but came back to win the next two races and the match with a 9.13/167.91 and a track record 8.77 at 168.22. Kelly lost two straight against Eddie Schartman at Muncie on July 1. In the first round his 8.97/157.51 lost to Eddie's 8.55/163, and in the second round, the Camaro lost a motor giving Schartman the match race win. He finished runner-up to Pete Gates at Ubly, Michigan, for the Great Lakes Championships. A final round 8.70/165.18 lost to Pete's 8.48/173. On July 9, he faced Roger Lindamood's Charger at Quaker City in Salem, Ohio. Once again he lost two straight. His first race 8.90/169 lost to Lindamood's 8.83/172 and an 8.94 in the second race lost to Roger's 8.84. |

Notes: Sullivan was in Connecticut on May 14 for a best-of-three-match race against Bill Lawton. He lost the match as he lost in the first and third races, but he had Top Speed at 171.10. On June 25, Sullivan was at Gary, Indiana, for another match race against Doug Cook, driving the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. It was not a good day for Bob as he lost all three races. The only bright side was that he was able to set a new track speed record. In their first race, Doug's 8.29/166 beat the Camaro's 8.49/171.75. Bob got the speed record in their second race, where his 8.40/181.81 still lost to Doug's 8.29/167. Although the match was already lost, the two agreed to run the last race. Cook again led Sullivan through the lights with an 8.28/167 over Bob's 8.44/172.73. Bob was at Motor City Dragway on July 22 for a four-car round-robin race. In his first race, he soloed with an 8.47/174.08 when Doug Cook broke in the "Stone, Woods & Cook" Mustang. In his second race, he improved to 8.37/176.81 to beat Paula Murphy. Sullivan's third run was an 8.36/175.43 that beat Arnie Beswick. Photo from the Hot Rod Meet, Riverside Raceway in California. |

Notes: Real Corvette. Runyan was at Carlsbad on March 19 for an eight-car show. Fifteen cars showed up and his 8.79 qualified #4. Unfortunately, the Corvette failed to fire in the first round, giving Randy Walls a solo into the semifinal. |

Notes: Johnny West's brother. West qualified on the "bump" at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.37. In the first round, he advanced when Gene Snow crossed the centerline. Unfortunately, West’s Vega broke on the run, and Snow was reinstated for round two. West was at El Paso Dragway in mid-May for the NHRA Division Four race. In the first round, the car broke on the line against Frank O'Brien. |
