Notes: Photo from SIR, Kent, Washington. Confirmed 5.375/274.22 at Seattle 1988. Where was the 5.312 run? | Paula ran a career best (to this point) of 5.52 at 232.67 to qualify #13 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, she had a rod let go and she lost to Ed McCulloch. On June 2, Martin was at Tulsa for its Springnationals. It was an eight-car show and Paula won her first-round race over Frank Kramberger with a 5.88/245.90. In the semifinals, she recorded another 5.88 at 247.25, but lost to the eventual winner John Force's 5.73/251. Paula bypassed the NHRA Springnationals, but she was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 track for its Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with eight-cars all making two passes and the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paula won her first race with an out of shape, shut off 9.08 that beat a fouling Jerry Caminito. In her second race, she ran a 6.08 that lost to Richard Hartman's 5.76. Her times failed to get her into the final. She did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but she was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A new career best of 5.45 at 259.14 qualified #13. Once again she lost to McCulloch in round one. She followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where a 5.83/229.18 qualified #11. In the first round she had problems and shut off to a 7.45/117.18 that lost to Del Worsham's 5.55/255. At the end of July, Paula was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.52/254.45 qualified #11, but an off-pace 6.02/167.91 lost to McCulloch in the first round. A week later she was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Once again she made the field; this time a 5.51/258.10 qualified #13. Martin lost early though, falling to Worsham in the first round. She again qualified #13 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.65/249.51. In the first round both she and Al Hofmann smoked the tires and her 6.38/165.65 beat Al's 6.79/145. A 5.40/257 by Force in round two stopped her 5.58/251.46. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, she qualified. But it wasn't easy and she destroyed two superchargers trying to make the field. A 5.47/261.02 qualified #15 and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 263.08, but she lost to Force's 5.32/274.

It was an eight-car show, and his 5.44/270.02 qualified on the "bump."In round one, he again dumped low qualifier White. It was a close race, but Richard's 5.48/267.85 beat White's 5.50/273. In the semifinal. He lost to John Force's 5.39/262 with a 5.57/236.46. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Southern Nationals. Richard qualified #7 with a 5.33/270.92. An opening round 5.45 lost to Worsham's 5.41. His best times were at Houston Spring at 5.319/277.34 in the first round, topping Del Worsham's 5.35/273. Photo from 1991 Nationals.

Notes: In January, John started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His track record 5.34 at 266.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He then made his way to the final by running 5.40/268.85 over Johnny West's 5.93/243 in the "Hawaiian" and 5.41/267.85 in the semi-final when Kenny Bernstein broke. In the final, he faced second qualifier Ed McCulloch, and his 5.47/267.06 got him his first victory of the season. The following week (February 7), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.44/274.13 qualified #5. He best West's 5.98/234 in the opening round with a 5.49/267.22. In round two, he improved to 5.42/272.64 to stop Bruce Larson's 5.58/259. But in the semi-finals, he smoked the tires to a 6.40/168.25 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Pulde who won with a 5.42/269. Shortly after that, he was at Baylands Raceway for its East/West drags. Four FCs were competing in a roundabout race. Force first ran 5.74/241.93 to beat Pulde's wheelstanding 10.84/77. He then ran 5.61/252.80 over West's 5.64/245. These two would come back for the final, and Force won with a track record 5.51 at 248.61 over West's 5.82/221. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified second to Tripp Shumake. A 5.40 (Low ET) at 268.85 advanced in round one when Scott Kalitta broke. Bernstein shut down just after leaving the line against him in the semi-final, and John won with a 5.45/267.06. He faced Shumake in the final, and he fouled. His 5.98/249.30 lost to Tripp's 11.10-96. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the future, Force would often win there. But back in '88, he was still getting his feet wet. He ran 5.40/265.64 and 5.36/270.02 in qualifying. The 5.36 gave him the pole. In the first round, the transmission failed, and he lost to Tom Hoover's 7.66/118. The rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals was run at DeSoto at the end of March. In the first round, his 5.64 beat Shumake's 5.69, but the car broke against Kalitta in the semi-final. He had qualified second at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals with a 5.32/279.50, but the race was rained out, and he could not return as IHRA ran it the same day as the Bakersfield March Meet. This race was now run in mid-April, and Force set both Top Speed and Low ET during qualifying at 5.57/259.36. But it didn't stick around long in eliminations, as in the first round, his rear slick came off, and he had to watch as Jim Adolph soloed into the semi-final with a 6.58/171. He also qualified #2 at Atlanta, where his 5.54/260.11 followed McCulloch's 5.53/269 at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After an easy first-round win, he got another in round two when Jim Head smoked the tires against him and shut down. Force advanced with a 5.58/264. He then ran 5.60/263 to defeat Bernstein's 5.72 in the semi-final. He faced McCulloch in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Ed's track record 5.52/266 win over John's 5.60/265.17. The team was having a rough time during qualifying at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.60 was followed by a tire-smoking, shut off 22.84. He then ran 5.55/263.69 and came back out and smoked the tires again. Still, the 5.55 qualified #1. But he was upset in the first round, where Chuck Etchells' 5.65/254 put his 5.78/254.23 on the trailer. After this race, Force was sitting in fifth place in NHRA points. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Jerry qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.57/269.54. Unfortunately, he broke against Cruz Pedregon in the first round. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.56/262.39 qualified #15. He lost to John Force in the first round. Caminito really picked up at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston. There, he ran 5.35/277.60 to qualify #12. In the first round, a good 5.46/275.22 lost to Chuck Etchells' 5.14/286. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals. Once again, Jerry qualified well, running 5.39/272.31 for the #11 spot in the field. He slowed to a 5.60/258.24 in the first round, which lost to Pedregon's 5.29/280. He did not attend the NHRA Winston Invitational but was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was on the "bump" with a 5.42/273.72, and he fouled in the first round against low qualifier Etchells. In mid-May, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Jerry qualified #15 with a 5.75/263.60 but again lost in the first round. This time Wyatt Radke's 5.49/268 beat his 5.63/264.93. He was #15 again at the next NHRA event, the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. A 5.37/272.64 got him the spot. In round one, he fell off to a 5.65/196.16 that lost to ETchell's 5.18/281. He lost in the first round at the next NHRA show as well, the Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.42/273.47 but lost to low qualifier Radke. I'm sure he was getting sick and tired of losing in the first round, but he was running pretty well to qualify at all these races. At the NHRA Western Nationals at the end of June, he ran 5.45/270.75 to qualify #10, but a 5.58/260.11 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.44/256 in the first round. On July 10, Jerry was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for a four-car race. He lost to Whit Bazemore in his first race. In the thin mountain air of Denver, Jerry ran 5.74/247.32 to qualify #13 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Another 5.74 at 227.50 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.52/265. He failed to qualify for the first time at an NHRA race in '93 at Sonoma for the California Nationals. He was the first alternate with a 5.73/230.41 best. A week later, it happened again; his best of 5.56/257.21 was the first alternate at the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Things had to take a turn, and they did at the next race. A 5.45/248.20 qualified #9 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he finally got past the first round when his 5.41/259.51 beat Kenji Okazaki's 5.59/225. In round two, an even better run of 5.38/273.97 lost to Pedregon's 5.25/284. After that good run, he was hoping for more at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.35/274.55 left him as the first alternate for the show. Qualifying wasn't a problem at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove since only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Jerry ran a 5.39/269.78 to get the #12 spot in the field. He beat Bazemore in round one, with a 5.42/263.08, but in round two, his 5.54/263.08 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.22/278. At Topeka, his 5.41/268.41 qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. His 5.43/261.78 in the first round lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Etchells' 5.13/290. 1986 McKinney chassis.

Notes: Who was the chassis builder, Pat Foster/Mike Bell or Tony Casarez? | Mineo had been out of racing for a few years, but early in '91, he purchased Raymond Beadle's entire Funny Car operation. This included the transporter and all the spare parts. He showed up at Atlanta in May for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he failed to qualify, running a best of 5.95/245.27. Mineo qualified #9 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a career best 5.42/272.14. A 5.57/243.77 in the first round, lost to Al Hofmann's 5.32/268. He got a new best-ever ET in qualifying at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, he ran 5.32 at 271.49 to qualify #8. An off-pace 5.62/236.96 in the first round, lost to Gary Bolger's 5.38/253. He continued to run strong when he turned a 5.37/274.22 to qualify #7 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. Mineo beat Richard Hartman in the first round, with a 5.38/268.17, but in the second round, he lost to the meet's eventual winner Mark Oswald, who ran 5.28/274 to beat Gordon's 5.48/237.09. He made his best showing of the year at the NHRA Chief Nationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.42/272.23. A first-round 5.40/267.69 beat a tire smoking Ed McCulloch and in round two, he beat John Force who also smoked the tires with a 5.36/271.08. In the semifinals, it was Mineo who overpowered the track and went up in smoke, losing to Jim White's 5.23/289 in the "Hawaiian." The NHRA season ended at Pomona for the World Finals and Gordon was disappointed when his best of 5.55/271.65 failed to qualify (third alternate). Best times were the Keystone 5.325 and the 274.22 at Topeka.

Notes: Dale was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.465/274.39 to qualify #11. He improved to a 5.366/269.70 to beat Tom Hoover's close 5.37/275 in the first round. In round two, he ran 5.378/268.97 over Art Hendey's 5.66/225. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.89/235. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate).

Notes: The Nitro Funny Cars set the Quit Motorplex alight last night with a fantastic display of match racing from the Greene Machine and Chemical Warfare teams. The best was saved for last when Allan Dobson ran an awesome 5.33, Australia's quickest ever funny car pass. The run was one of the night's most spectacular when the skilled Dobson pedalled at around 200 feet, locking up the clutch and putting the front wheels about a foot into the air with a powerstand out to almost half track. Unfortunately Dobson clipped a timing box at the finish line with the body, handing the win to Ashley Bailey. The first-round match up saw Dobson smoke the tyres 100 feet out, facing both walls before wrangling the car back into the middle of the lane. Bailey ran through for a then PB 5.45. The second race was brilliant for the crowd with both cars pedalling several times, remaining even right to the 1,000 feet beam before Bailey clicked early, Dobson able to thunder through for a 5.61/284 MPH win against Bailey's 5.85. Of course the final race was the best, Dobson's 5.33 narrowly defeating a 5.44 from Bailey. It was difficult to tell if Dobson left the ET beam intact or not on the finish line. If so this was Australia's quickest side by side funny car race. If not, it probably would still have been given how close Bailey was to Dobson at the finish line. All in all a fantastic show put on by the funny cars in front of the season's biggest crowd.

Ron qualified #15 at Phoenix with a 5.560/258.99. Jim White got him in round one, 5.25/278 to 5.529/258.84. Ron really stepped up at the Houston Fram Supernationals with a #7 qualifying 5.341/265.87. In round one, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.44/230 to 7.72/107, but broke against Mark Oswald in round two. Ron's next NHRA national event was Seattle, and he was the second alternate at 7.18/195. Ron again qualified nicely at the Winston World Finals in Pomona, ending up #13 with a 5.447/263.31. But Jim White got him again with a 5.30/289 to 6.56/148 win in round one. It was a nice year for the independent campaigner.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. Gary qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, his 5.64/238.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.40/270. He then followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, where he qualified #13 with a 5.57/241.80. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. Memphis was NHRA's next stop for the Mid-South Nationals. Gary's 5.52/253.30 qualified #12 for the show. Unfortunately, Bolger lost to Al Hofmann in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary qualified #15 with a 5.55/246.71. But his problems in the first round, continued as although he ran an improved 5.48/255.82, he lost to eventual winner Mike Dunn's 5.37/261. He stopped off at US 131 for an eight-car show run "Chicago-Style," with all eight cars making two runs with the two Low ET's meeting in the final. Gary smoked the tires in his first race against Hoover and slowed to an 8.81/92.24 loss. In his second race, a 5.68/258.15 (Top Speed) beat Pat Walsh and advanced him into the final against Hoover, who had run a 5.62 best. Hoover smoked the tires in the final, and Bolger got the victory with a 5.62/244.60. He did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 5.53/262.00. Another 5.53 at 261.24 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Jim White's 5.39/273 in the "Hawaiian." Bolger also bypassed the next three NHRA events before appearing at Brainerd for the NorthStar Nationals, where his 5.58/259.59 qualified #9. He finally got past the first-round when his 5.51/264.08 beat Freddie Neely. In the second round, he fouled away a career-best 5.44 at 263.00 against McCulloch, who advanced with a 5.43/264. He went to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, but his best of 5.72/218.87 failed to qualify. He then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, a new best of 5.34 at 259.06 qualified #9. In the opening round, he beat Gordon Mineo's 5.62/236 with a strong 5.38/253.09. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner White in round two. Bolger also qualified for the NHRA Heartland Nationals, where his 5.48/258.99 held on to the #16 spot. He improved by a tenth in the first round, where his 5.38/265.09 lost to White's 5.20/286.
