Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42-268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round and beat him with a 5.39-260.11 to Force's 5.46-275. In the second round be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43-264.23 and once again met Force in the first round. Again Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60-150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45-264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49-244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid South Nationals where a 5.36-264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round after qualifying #11 with a 5.57-263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44-252.66 setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67-183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55-242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42-275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79-135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54-256.77 qualified #5 and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round with a 5.57-251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47-270 beat Tom's 5.68-211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5 and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76-248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round be beat Gary Ritter but in round two he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47-256.70. But once again McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47-273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66-261.55 and in the first round he improved to a 5.54-265.48 but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49-261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55-259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In the first round he improved to a 5.42-238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80-111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (Sept 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 5.54-265.01 but in the first round he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41-253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Tom finally got onto direct-drive bandwagon in '88, had a few wheelstands. Photo from Indy 1988. Confirmed 261.47 at Brainerd 88. Where was the 264.70 run? | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #9 with a 5.57. He beat low qualifier John Force in the first round and Jim Head in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Tom was at DeSoto Dragway in March for the IHRA Supernationals. In the first round his Firebird broke behind the line giving eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird a solo into the semifinals. He made the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and lasted until round two where he got out of shape and shut off against Ed McCulloch. He also lasted until the second round at the IHRA Texas Nationals. There his 5.55-260.41 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.50-264. The next NHRA stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Hoover qualified #13 with a 5.77 but he lost to John Martin in round one. A week later (May 22), he was running at the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.76 in qualifying #5. In the first round he only needed a 6.02-216.91 to advance when Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Tom ran another 5.76 at 242.61 but lost to Oswald's 5.64-261. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May, and Hoover qualified for the show but lost to Bruce Larson in the first round.

Notes: Started year in the Trans Am, which had best times of 5.374 at 276.49. Best times for the Thunderbird body were 5.369 at 266.74. Keeping only one entry for this team in 1989 with combined times. Art started his '89 season by qualifying his Firebird #15 at Pomona with a 5.51-266.27 for the Winternationals. A first round 5.54-260.94 beat Scott Kalitta's 5.78-218 but he lost to Jim White in the second round. At the second NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals a 5.37 qualified #8 and this time he made it into the semifinals, after getting around Kenny Bernstein who broke a rear end in round two, where he ran Scott Kalitta but smoked the tires and lost. He qualified #7 with a 5.40 at the Gatornationals on March 19. Once again he made it into the semifinals after stopping Mark Oswald in the second round with a 5.45-270. In the semifinal, Art broke on the line against Ed McCulloch. He was in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #2 with a 5.39-268.97 but he lost to John Force in the first round. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid South Nationals. Art used a 5.47-242.65 to qualify #10 but lost to Don Prudhomme in the second round. Art then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #8 in the eight car field with a 5.74-257.57. He faced McCulloch in the first round and he crossed the centerline. The following week he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.56-262.54 qualified #7 but he lost in the first round. He took another first round loss at the NHRA Springnationals where after qualifying #10 with a 5.50-263.75 he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.25-271 with a 5.75-193.88. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.65-256.11 qualified #12 and he beat McCulloch in the first round with a 5.63-260.79. In round two, both he and Kalitta fought for traction and Hendley's 6.95-163.51 came out on top. This matched him up against Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car in the semifinals. Art ran a 5.85-250 that lost to Oswald's 5.60-238. Next stop was at Milan Dragway for IHRA's Northern Nationals. Art qualified #4 there but he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round.

Notes: Photo from 1992 IHRA Winter Nationals.| Paula did not attend the NHRA Winternationals but she showed up at NHRA's second race, the Arizona Nationals, on Feb 23. Her 5.71-264.70 best was only good enough for the second alternate spot. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, Paula qualified on the "bump" with a 5.53-256.11. A first round 5.43-258.39 lost to low qualifier John Force's 5.15-273. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, she ran a 5.94-195.31 to qualify #6 in the eight car field. Unfortunately, the Probe broke on the line against Del Worsham in the first round. The following week (March 22), Paula qualified #13 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.39-266.50. She ran a career best (to this point) 5.37-271.08 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as she lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.20-285.

Notes: Photo from 1991 Nationals. | NHRA held its Northwest Nationals at Seattle in early August. A 5.45-271.65 qualified Murphy in the #8 spot. In the first round he ran a career best of 5.37 at 260.11 but he wasted it with a red light start giving Whit Bazemore the win with a 5.45-263. He skipped running at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.51-271.08 was only good enough for the first alternate. At the NHRA Keystone Nationals, he made the show with a 5.45-268.58 that got him the #15 spot. Another 5.45-264.08 in the first round lost to John Force's 5.34-274. He qualified in the #15 spot again at the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.48-269.94. He improved to a 5.39-270.88 in the first round but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.33-265. Jim ran 5.42-271.08 to qualify #13 at the NHRA Chief Nationals. In the first round his 5.56-221.89 lost to Force's 5.31-276. The NHRA season ended at Pomona for the World Finals. Murphy qualified #14 with a 5.45-274.89 and in the first round he beat Chuck Etchells when both smoked the tires. Jim's 5.94-199.37 beat Chuck's 6.01-246. In round two, Force got to him again. John ran 5.40-275 to beat Murphy's 5.46-263.06.

Notes: Photo from 1991 Nationals At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Whit qualified #15 with a 5.54-228.42. He had Gary Evans serving as crew chief. He lost to Jim White in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. In June he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals where Whit qualified #11 with a 5.48-269.38. He slowed to a 5.61-270.35 in the first round that lost to John Force's 5.45-258. The team did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals but they were at Englishtown in early July for the NHRA Summernationals where a career best of 5.48 at 268.97 qualified them #15. Notes: 86 McKinney chassis. Photo from Bristol, TN 1992. | Jerry was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #11 with a 5.40-271.41. A 5.42-274.72 beat Gary Clapshaw's 5.57-248. He lost to John Force's track record 5.18 at 281 in round two with an off pace 6.12-173.04. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals he ran 5.53-262.92 to qualify #13 but lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he made the field with a 5.51-254.30 for the #15 spot. He picked up to a 5.46-244.89 in the first round that beat Jim Epler. In the second round he lost to Gordon Mineo. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.46-268.81 qualified #14 but in the first round, his off pace 6.69-140.38 lost to Jim Epler. Unfortunately, Jerry's best of 5.58-263.85 failed to qualify (second alternate) at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He did better at Memphis where a 5.75-243.17 qualified #15 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Jerry improved to a 5.67-231.18 in the first round but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.25-273. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals at the end of May. There, he qualified #8 in the eight car field with a 6.31-210.37. He lost a close first round race with low qualifier Del Worsham when his 5.64-267.93 narrowly lost to Del's 5.61-265. Caminito's next appearance was at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.47-269.94. In round one his 5.59-252.03 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.33-255. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he qualified #11 with a 5.61-263.77. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.66-224 with a 5.64-266.03. In round two, his 5.67-244.23 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.41-274. Jerry ran at the IHRA Empire Nationals on July 5 where he qualified #6 in the eight car show with a 6.00-250.13. A 6.02-241.41 beat Norm Wilding's 6.29-235 in the first round while in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to 9.58-89.10 in a loss to Worsham's 5.76-260. The ninth NHRA race of the season was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Caminito qualified #12 for the show with a 5.52-273.63. He lost in round one to Mineo. The next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jerry made the show with a 5.68-256.19 (#13), but in the first round the Cutlass broke, advancing Epler into round two.

He had problems in the first round and shut off to a 9.47 loss to Glenn Mikres' 5.64 in Joe Pisano's car. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Jim ran 5.44-260.49 to qualify #11. He lost to Jim White in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he continued to qualify well, running 5.48-269.86 for the #10 spot in the show. He had problems in the first round and shut down to 6.08-182.59 to lose to K.C. Spurlock's 5.40-277.
